One Piece Theories: JoyBoy’s Treasure on Laugh Tale

                                                             - The Void Century Theories, Part 2

This is the second part of my Void Century Theories Series. 

Joy Boy’s Promise to Princess Poseidon regarding Noah and the Treasure on Laugh Tale

Created during the Void Century, Noah is a giant ship that was a part of a failed attempt to move into the human world – although its exact mission is unknown (and would only be revealed the day it is raised). Joy Boy made a promise to the princess of Fish-Man island, Poseidon, to use her powers to raise the ship to the surface. However, for unknown reasons, Joy Boy was unable to fulfill his side of the agreement. In regret, he left an apology etched onto a poneglyph. Since then, the Fish-Men have kept Noah until “the day that must come” (Ch. 636). Later on, we get a flashback in which the sea kings discussing the reincarnation of their “king” (AKA Poseidon, and now Shirahoshi) and how there would between her and meeting with another sovereign who is to be born in a distant sea (Ch. 968).

During the Fish-Man Island arc, the Sea Kings remark that the time for Noah’s mission was almost here (Ch. 647).

Speculation: If we were to believe Clover’s hypothesis, then this has some serious implications for the timeline. He believes that the Poneglyphs were sought out as a way to conserve history after the Great Kingdom realized they were losing. This means that, by the time that Joy Boy left his apology, the Great Kingdom was already losing. If Joy Boy was in fact a member of the Great Kingdom, as many theorize, it would explain why he was unable to follow through with his plan to raise Noah.

We also know that, at some point, Joy Boy left some type of treasure on the island Laugh Tale. In Chapter 967, Oden says this about what they found:

“We had learned about everything in the world. We learned about the Void Century. We learned about the meaning of the D. name. We learned about the Ancient Weapons. I, at least, learned that Wano had connected with the world in the past. But do you want to know what Gol D. Roger, King of the Pirates, did when the treasure he sought was placed in front of his very eyes? He laughed. We laughed as well, to the point where tears started pouring out of our eyes.”

So, from this, we know that whatever Joy Boy left gave explanations for:

·         The Void Century

·         The Ancient Weapons

·         The meaning of the D. Name

Therefore, we can conclude that, as we all thought, that they are all connected. They are all intertwined with the Great Kingdom and Joy Boy.

Another interesting point, is the fact that whatever they discovered, caused them to laugh. Roger even says,

“Joy Boy, I… I really wish I had been born in the same era as you. You left behind such an unbelievable treasure… !! What a funny story!!”

He specifically mentions a “funny story”, which leads me to believe that there is probably a Poneglyph left on the island. I doubt that it is the only thing that he left behind, but I think it is safe to say that we can expect to find one.

We knew from the Marineford arc that Roger was aware of the true meaning of the ‘D.’ name, but now we know that he got that information from Joy Boy’s treasure. Information that he would eventually give to Whitebeard, telling him “it’s a story from long ago…”.

When Whitebeard confirms the One Piece existence during Marineford, he says this,

“Sengoku… your World Government is afraid… afraid of the coming war that will engulf the world!! I wasn’t interested, but when someone finds that treasure… the world will be shaken to its core…!! Someone will find it. That day will certainly come…One piece… it exists!!!”

Honestly, this could mean absolutely anything and doesn’t really do much in terms of specifics, but what it does give, is some credence to what Clover said regarding the Great Kingdom. He said that all the answers lie in the history of what happened during the Void Century. Considering we now know that what Joy Boy left was an explanation of exactly that, and that Whitebeard says that the truth is going to be “shaken to its core”, lines up with what Clover believed. It is interesting that Whitebeard says that a war will commence after someone finds the One Piece. For there to be a war, it either needs to be over a powerful object (which could be the ancient weapons) or due to anger. However, considering the Roger Pirates laughed when they found the treasure, I don’t believe that’s it.  

Also, what Oden concluded from what he learned on Laugh Tale, is that the Wano Country should have their borders open to the world before the day Joy Boy returns (in 20 years). This brings up something I’ve heard a lot of people talking about. Everyone in the One Piece universe keeps speaking of Joy Boy as if he’s suddenly going to rise from the dead. So, either:

·         A) He really is going to come back to life. (I’m looking at you, Im-sama’s freezer room)

·         B) He is going to reincarnate.

·         C) Joy Boy is a title.

Honestly, out of all of these, the one that feels the most like Oda, is option C. Especially when you take into consideration the “Will of D.” which I will discuss later, I feel that it has the most potential. For starters, I really don’t see Oda bringing someone back to life. We already have a main character. Bringing a character with as much hype as Joy Boy with only 5 years left of a series (which accounts for, like, 2 arcs) isn’t a move I can see Oda making. However, I will say, that Im-Sama’s funky freezer room did look like a crypt [but more on that later].

Addendum: In the post-credits secret ending (which was written by Oda), Roger berates one of his crewmembers for having made an eternal pose for Laugh Tale. He grabs it and tosses it into the ocean. After that, he claims “We were too early…”.

Updated: 9/13/2021. In one of the more recent chapters, after Kaido kicks Luffy off of his giant skull, the Emperor says, 

Which heavily supports - if not confirms - the theory of Joyboy being a title.

Finishing this chapter had me in actual tears. This is such a special part of the the series to finally get to and it's amazing.

“Laugh Tale”

I’ve actually heard it before, that the name “Raftel” comes from “laugh tale”, but didn’t think too much of it. Now, however, it’s obvious that there’s more to it. Is Oda messing with us? Just what is so funny?

Also, about Joy Boy. Now we know for sure that he’s a very important character, probably far more so than we thought when we first heard of him on Fishman Island. Raftel’s “treasure” was his, right? If it was, is it actually a treasure more in sentimental than money value? That would explain part of Roger’s reaction.

Another thing is that he says Raftel has been abandoned for the last 800 years, which means that people last set a foot there (before Roger’s crew) as Void Century ended. Gets me more and more convinced that it is also the place where the ancient civilization that the World Government feared was located.

Things just keep getting more and more interesting, but I’m afraid we’ll have to wait for any answers for a long time. Next we’ll see quick flashbacks of Oden’s return to Wano and his down fall, then back to the present timeline. Hopefully we’ll actually get to see something interesting too instead of just boring and mindles fights.
