Chapter 4: COPPER - copper earrings, copper-based minerals, and sample gauge card

This is a gauge card. In this photo it shows the relative measurements for gauge and diameter, but if you have a physical version you can use it on actual jewelry to find out the size.

Copper isn’t a super common metal to use for earrings, but here are some copper earrings I got from a local designer at a farmer’s market!

Enough of that boring stuff, the children yearn for the mines!

Bonus content: Malachite sample!

Additionally, the photo below shows most of my mineral collection. Green is a pretty good indicator of copper content. You can see the malachite {Cu2CO3(OH)2} in the front (the vibrant blue/green mineral shown in the above photo), covellite {CuS} next to/behind it (the mostly black mineral with shiny blue highlights), turquoise {CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O} in the front to the right (the flat pastel blue sample), as well as the large aurichalcite {(Zn,Cu)5(CO3)2(OH)6} sample in the center (the very large stone with blue/green crystals on the top).

There’s also a bunch of mystery rocks that either weren’t labeled when I got them, or are ones that I collected at a local mine. I also have a separate display of UV-reactive samples under both long and short wave, but that’s a topic for a separate post (feel free to talk to me about minerals any time, there are so many cool ones! I just don't want this post to get too long).

I made some earrings from some abalone fragments and also got taught how to make a cabochon with a piece of blue lace agate with a geology club I joined on a lark which I am in love with (it looks like a fog bank in rock form!).

crack fics are a thing for a reason and they obviously work considering how hard i was laughing my ass off at one yesterday and having the fucking time of my life

a crackfic about your blorbos is still a fic about your blorbos and is just as valid and worthy of love n stuff

emotions can be really hard so if you cant seem to get them try doing something just fucking stupid and funny

I'm feeling a very real and pressing need to read a Discworld novel lately. Everything I've read about them is just lovely and seems like the kind of thing tailor-made to excite my rather unique sense of humor. On the flip side, there's just so many of them and I am such a dreadfully slow reader; the whole prospect seems thoroughly overwhelming.

This is not a new problem. The sheer number of books I would enjoy if I ever got around to them is enough to crush a not-unsturdy animal.

Scientists only exist because:

A) they are so not normal about That One Thing In Particular that it consumes their whole life. They are so utterly fascinated by it that learning more bring them genuine joy. To us, science is 30% nerd talk 60% research papers and 10% explosions, and to them its still that but it's worth it because they have the chance of discovering something new about it.

B) they have the dedication, will, and absolute balls to fuck around and find out. They fear no God, nor any mortal man, and there is not a single creature in this whole damn universe that could stop them from reaching out of their enclosure and poking the infinite and fathomless hole in their knowledge with their little gremlin hands until it either yields its secrets or they die. And there is no in-between.

And I just think their neat for that. Go on you funky little dudes, discover the horrors, peer into the past, pick up rocks, get out there!
