i love how dead boy detectives presents such a diverse mix of the campiest, most over-the-top tv characters of all time, and the best representation of actual real-life human beings i think i have ever seen on television

I really love hope is a thing with feathers and I also really LOVE the hope as a sewer rat poem too but I wish it was not explicity written as "well actually" against Dickinson asgvsjnk. The imagery is SO GOOD but this whole vibe of "my metaphor is better than your metaphor" kinda sours it for me
#i dont like the patronizing usage of ''Emily'' like theyre explaining something to a child#admittedly dickinson has been dead for over a century so its probably huge deal to talk about her flippantly in terms of poetry#this is just me personally. how i feel about it#i dont like her being namedropped like that#it has this energy of ''haha lemme school this bitch''#when the poem itself was never supposed to see the light of day. she never consented to it being published. girl was 5 years in the grave#it feels like making fun of somebodys diary#i also dont like how it kinda makes fun of dickinson's imagery of hope as something ''beautiful delicate'' thing#i always interpreted as it is told. a little bird. i pictured a fat fluffy thing like the ones i see outside my window#ive known them to be stubborn and mischivious#when we leave out seeds on the lawn the little ones are always bullied away by the crows and magpies#but they keep trying. theyll attempt to sneak over and peck away before the crows notice them#they ARE optimistic and resilient little things. tougher than they look#so i always found the metaphor apt#sewer rat also fits just as well. but i think it depends on the angle from how youre looking at it#so i dont like this vibe of ''it should be more RAW it should be UGLIER'' cuz even tho i love that style of writing#it just feels like unnecessary one-upping here#especially considering dickinson was severely depressed and tons of her poems reflect it#god forbid she dabble around with the occasional light hearted poem about seeing hope as a silly little bird#asgsjsnk sorry im not trying to make a statement or anything. ill delete this later probably

Sitting on my hands kicking my feet waiting to hear when you watch Skeleton Crew finale :333
I watched it!
It stuck the landing!
It did everything I wanted it to do (except technically one thing, but it was close enough so it counts) and didn't do anything I didn't want it to do!
What a good story! Maybe the Star Wars property that best captures the tone of the original Star Wars! Plus a great '80s kid's adventure!

i think magpie would get along so well with some of y’all’s rooks. please imagine her kicking it in antiva as a regular degular de riva assassin in ur playthroughs. u will find her with a bottle of booze and a deck of cards on the highest available rooftop in treviso should u need her services (no strings attached one night stands and/or someone to play wicked grace with mostly. or assassination. i guess.)

When it's 3 years after the fact and you realize that you accidentally helped a friend name a character Tim Drake.
*facepalm*
To be fair, it's a nickname? But still. When my friend went "hey what should my character Septimus's last name be?"
I said "Drake," because fantasy setting, and it sounds cool, and why not.
It wasn't until later that we got into the whole "Septimus is kind of a mouthful, what would people actually call him?"
And that's when Tim came up as a nickname.
And I put NONE OF THIS ALL TOGETHER until just recently when reading Batfam fics because that's the rabbit hole my current fandom fixation went down via crossover introductions a la dpxdc.
I think I need to go hide in shame now.

you ever become obsessed with your own sentences
He could tell the truth. But he was frozen. Somehow he knew that if he did talk, they would just have found that fascinating, and probably would have started with his throat instead.

Okay so I’m originally from the uk and over there it’s a thing to always greet/wave at/salute magpies and whatever it’s something I’ve done forever and I’ll admit it turned into like a big thing for me and I will absolutely interrupt a conversation to say hello to a magpie and get super distressed if I can’t but whatever it’s fine. The thing is I live in Canada right now and people think I’m weird when I say hello to magpies and don’t believe me that it’s not just me and it’s very annoying me saying hi to birds isn’t hurting you??

Hellooo I am wondering do you have any good book recs or resources for if I want to learn about the progressive era or some of the lesser known presidents (Garfield Arthur McKinley etc?) I love your posts and I’ve been hankering for a while to know more and immerse myself in those time periods that aren’t Revolution Civil War or WW1 onward! :D
Naturally, I'm recommending the Presidential podcast to anyone who wants to learn more about the broader scope of American history. Going through history president by president means that you don't skip over any of the in-between stuff, and since you learn about each of these presidents as people, you get a very personal look at history. Each episode is about forty minutes long, so there's not much time commitment, and most episodes involve interviews with people who wrote books, so you have reading recommendations if you come across a president that you want to learn more about.
For Garfield and Arthur, I can recommend Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. It's not the most scholarly book, but it's a very engagingly-written account of Garfield's life and death and all the history surrounding his story.
For the progressive era, I'm going to suggest The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I haven't actually read this one, but the couple of chapters I read on the Kindle preview were interesting, and Team of Rivals was fantastic, and since you specifically asked about the progressive era, I figure this is a safe enough book to suggest. It's actually about the friendship between Roosevelt and William Howard Taft (who is another fascinating forgotten president) and how their very different personalities brought them together and eventually tore them apart, as well as about how TR used the press to further his agenda, which seems like an interesting angle to take on the era.
(Oh, and this goes in a completely different direction, but for a book set roughly around that same time period, The Food Explorer by Daniel Stone is about the hunt to find new foods for American agriculture, and is full of fascinating history about how this all interacts with the events around the turn of the 20th century.)
Another podcast I can recommend is American History Tellers. I listened to their seven-episode arc about Andrew Jackson, and it's an immersive and engaging dive into American history from about the War of 1812 until Jackson's death in 1845, going pretty deep into an era of history that's usually glossed over.

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
tagged by @sophiedevreaux thank u you're so sweet 💖 now watch out, you're about to gain more knowledge of old british sitcoms than anyone other than me has ever needed or wanted
💛 the good life - the ultimate. the love of my life. the only show. if you want to feel better about everything ever, watch the good life. it's hilarious, it's ingenious, it's the 1970s, the cast are golden, and everyone is so terribly nice.
💛 scott & bailey - one of sally wainwright's great masterpieces, and probably my favourite of her shows these days, featuring truly incredible, wonderfully written milf detectives (meaning janet, gill, and julie. rachel is ... also there) catching murderers.
💛 gilmore girls - who doesn't wish they lived in stars hollow? i just want to eat at luke's every day, go to town meetings, attend all the little events. this show is so clever, so well-written, so comforting, so good. lorelai, emily, and luke my beloveds. let's just pretend season six never happened.
💛 2point4 children - possibly this should have been first bc honestly 2point4 children represents so much of my personality. it's fantastic. it's hilarious. the writing is exemplary. bill porter is a genius, a queen, and The Goal character to portray. if i were a tv trope, i'd be Deadpan Snarking, Long-Suffering Matriarch in an old british sitcom, of which she is the quintessential example. also, this show centres around a married couple named bill and ben. i told you, it's genius.
💛 the thin blue line - ben elton's great masterpiece. i'm not saying the young ones and blackadder aren't good too, bc they are, but the thin blue line is god tier. it's so great, so cleverly written, and so, so funny. i can recite whole scenes, and, yet, they're still so funny every time i rewatch. it's brilliant.
💛 dinnerladies - sometimes when i'm having a conversation about victoria wood people tell me they don't like dinnerladies, and i'm like what the fuck is wrong with you. i can recite most of this show by heart, i've seen it so many times. victoria wood was the most incredible observational comic, and this show is a masterpiece. it's hilarious, it's ingenious. i defy you to find a better, more insightful comic and / or writer than victoria wood. you can't do it. she was the greatest, and this show is the fucking best.
💛 broadchurch - what can i say, i really enjoy the west country, clever mysteries, great writing, lady detectives, raw emotions, and older lesbians (especially when they're as iconic as maggie radcliffe). they really combined a whole lot of my key interests in one brilliant tv programme.
💛 wentworth - the show that brought me back to tumblr after i was absent for years. it's dark, it's brilliant, it's female-driven, there are several sapphic women, and you never know what's coming next. also, bridget westfall is the most incredible character, and a lesbian who gives me so much validation, as well as being so incredibly beautiful i can't get over it (how @ libby tanner) and the love she + franky have for each other is also so incredible and beautiful to see.
feel free to ignore!! tagging @juliewlters, @alisonscotlock, @moxyphinx, @notprincehamlet, @pea-green, @grandselfmythology, @beesarthur

(I left out the stupid joke)
#on brand for me#i liked this story and was able to enjoy it#only afterwards the race-swapping/'colorblind'/racist casting bothered me ...#especially in this story ....... bc it's such a typical thing that esp. white men do to women and poc#to steal our work and take the credit - esp. bc they think we don't deserve it or 'wouldn't know what to do with it' etc.#precisely because we are women and poc and thus 'beneath them' and they feel entitled to it like a resource/raw material#i have personally experienced it MANY TIMES#so in rian johnson's shitty tv series OF COURSE Gavin is a white guy (the actor is Italian/white)#while the murderers and thieves are a white woman a black man and a meek/'cucky' lmao white man ugh#white men stealing our stories again ... blade runner 2049 all over again :/#in another poker face episode there is a bunch of people laughing at security cam footage of someone dumping the dead body of a black man#and it's apparently 'okay' and 'not racist at all' bc they cast a black man as one of the people laughing#that was really fucked up tbh#natasha lyonne why#i still have to watch if because i love you too much :/#(yeah i'm blocking everyone who tries to argue in the notes lmao)#(and missing the point of Gavin being a 'magpie' but not murdering#and ripping off a whole entire song every single word and note from one single specific person ... jesus christ xD)#('magpie' meaning that he took a sound here a rhythm there a word here a thing there etc but he didn't ever rip off a whole entire thing)#(in real life it happens that songwriters accidentally take a melody or other element from an existing song)#(often they settle it by giving songwriting credits to the original - it was unrealistic in this ep that it would ruin the whole deal)#(but maybe a little bit plausible in this specific scenario since the song was supposed to be their one comeback hit)#(and they didn't have anything else remotely as good)#(while f.ex. ed sheeran has accidentally or not copied melodies before but he's got 50.000 other bangers up his sleeve so it's no big deal)#(like he doesn't lose his entire career over it lol - just some lawsuits once in a while heh)
