Amid anger and protest over the Trump administration’s plan to deport millions of immigrants, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to monitor and locate “negative” social media discussion about the agency and its top officials, according to contract documents reviewed by The Intercept. Citing an increase in threats to ICE agents and leadership, the agency is soliciting pitches from private companies to monitor threats across the internet — with a special focus on social media. People who simply criticize ICE online could pulled into the dragnet.

If this scanning uncovers anything the agency deems suspicious, ICE is asking its contractors to drill down into the background of social media users. That includes: “Previous social media activity which would indicate any additional threats to ICE; 2). Information which would indicate the individual(s) and/or the organization(s) making threats have a proclivity for violence; and 3). Information indicating a potential for carrying out a threat (such as postings depicting weapons, acts of violence, refences to acts of violence, to include empathy or affiliation with a group which has violent tendencies; references to violent acts; affections with violent acts; eluding [sic] to violent acts.”

Once flagged, the system will further scour a target’s internet history and attempt to reveal their real-world position and offline identity. In addition to compiling personal information — such as the Social Security numbers and addresses of those whose posts are flagged — the contractor will also provide ICE with a “photograph, partial legal name, partial date of birth, possible city, possible work affiliations, possible school or university affiliation, and any identified possible family members or associates.” The document also requests “Facial Recognition capabilities that could take a photograph of a subject and search the internet to find all relevant information associated with the subject.” The contract contains specific directions for targets found in other countries, implying the program would scan the domestic speech of American citizens.

The posting indicates that ICE isn’t merely looking to detect direct threats of violence, but also online criticism of the agency. As part of its mission to protect ICE with “proactive threat monitoring,” the winning contractor will not simply flag threatening remarks but “Provide monitoring and analysis of behavioral and social media sentiment (i.e. positive, neutral, and negative).” This includes regular updates on the “total number of negative references to ICE found in social media” from week to week. Such sentiment analysis — typically accomplished via machine-learning techniques — could place under law enforcement scrutiny speech that is constitutionally protected. Simply stated, a post that is critical or even hostile to ICE isn’t against the law.

REVIEW: The Magnus Archives (part one?)

I've just started it, to be honest, and I wanted to give my early reaction.

Summary (mainly from the Rusty Quill site): The Magnus Archives (TMA) is a horror fiction anthology podcast. The story revolves around Jonathan Sims, the new head archivist at the Magnus Institute, an "organisation dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird", who's reviewing old supernatural statements from the archives so he can bring it up to date.

I've seen many people talking about it online so I decided to listen to it while I was out for a walk. First of all, I love the idea of fiction podcasts. I'm always in my room because my favorite activities, which is reading, playing videogames and drawing, are the kind of stuff that I won't do outisde naturally (it's always cold and raining where I'm from). So yeah, fiction podcasts are really cool and horror fiction podcasts kinda fit the raining and cold vibes.

I really like the vibes of Magnus Archives. The voice is really clear (english isn't my first language so this is really important to me), the music is unsettling but not in a way that makes it unbearable to listen to (you know horror musics that are basically chalks on board ugh I hate it), and I quite liked the sounds that makes the audio really sounds like it's from an old archives. However, I do think I will read transcriptions now because, as a "english isn't my first language" person, I feel like it's a lot for me after one or two episodes. This kinda sucks because it kinda defeats the purpose of fiction podcasts but it has honestly nothing to do with the actual podcast, just with my comprehension skills.

Since it's an anthology, the stories are changing between each episodes (but I think there's a bigger picture to it). I've listened to the first two, and they were both really cool (but I'm weak to horror anthology, it's one of my favorite thing ever), I especially liked the endings when the main character talks about the research they made on the statements.

The genre, that I call "corporate paranormal" which is basically having agencies/institutes to deal with paranormal stuff, is one of my favorite subgenres of horror (think Lockwood&Co!) so TMA kinda fits my vibe. I'm also a huge fan of Lovecraft and I think TMA could classify as lovecraftian horror.

If anyone contacts you about a job paid in USDT it's not a typo, that's a crypto coin. They're planning on 'paying' you in crypto then oh dear you need to pay them real money to get your balance out, which turns out to be... fake.

There's no actual coin in the wallet.

The jobs are usually review bombing restaurants or something skeezy. But it sounds like easy money — $100 for 60 minutes work!

Rule of thumb: If it's too good to be true — it isn't, no matter how desperate you are.

TWO Fake emails.

Meetacp.co.uk appears genuine if generic, and you can look them up on Companies House

Companies House is the UK government's public list of all companies that have registered as a legal company. It supplies their registered address, officers and financial reports, so investors can check that they're y'know, real.

However, the email is from meetacpgroup.co.uk — A quick check of meetacpgroup.co.uk shows… no website. The domain is registered so that email can be sent and received, but there's no site.

After that, the rest is basically an irrelephant, but:

Nobody is listing their address as the entire city of Leeds. Real businesses have addresses. Because they don't need to hide.

We received your details from *mumble*. Really? You can't tell me where you got my info? Is that because you don't want me to go "Wait, I don't use that site!"?

Business correspondence usually has more than a first name

There's no branding or legal boilerplate on the original email either — It all came as plain text.

There's a part about appointments filling up quick to make you stop and call right away stop thinking don't check just call!

No serious job offers tarts with "Call us". They'll either arrange a time over email or refer you to a web page with a date picker.

Review: This is one of the most pointed-to Classics of the Horror genre I've ever seen and it's taken me many, many years to approach Hitchcock's Psycho. By now (64 years since release) everyone and their grandmother's mother has probably heard of, know the story, experienced adaptations or seen this film at least once or in clip form somewhere online. I've only seen some of the ending and the shower sequence in storyboard classes prior to seeing this so majority of the film was fresh to me. Many beats from this film (the final reveal, the shower sequence, the stairway kill) have been shown to many a film/animation student ad nauseum for good reason. This film's cinematography is great, the suspense holds you all the way through and Norman Bates played by Anthony Perkins is marvelously acted, if anything I'd watch the film at least once to see his performance and how unsettling his character is. It's a bit longer of a movie at 1h 48min so if you like a longer film that's slower paced to build suspense this is for you! Overall I give Psycho (1960): Watch at least once 🎥 -Warnings for Folks- Mental Health: Villain portrayed with possible DID, Trauma involving Mother LGBTQ: Use of the term Transvestite near end of film and a dated definition of such from a psychologist character. Feminism: Female Characters with some agency and smarts, especially while on the run. Some older women mentioned in the film can feel like a powerful force but overall there is a constant male gaze (in some instances literally through a peep hole) on our female protagonist which plays into the themes, suspense and uneasiness.

Application of Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act to TikTok

Issued January 20, 2025.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Policy. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (the "Act") (Pub. L. 118-50, div. H) regulates "foreign adversary controlled applications," specifically those operated by TikTok and any other subsidiary of its China-based parent company, ByteDance Ltd., on national security grounds.

Section 2(a) of the Act prohibits entities from distributing, maintaining, or updating certain defined foreign adversary controlled applications within the territory of the United States by providing (A) services for such distribution, maintenance, or updates by means of an online mobile application store or other marketplace; or (B) internet hosting services to enable the distribution, maintenance, or updating of such applications. Section 2(g) of the Act defines "Foreign Adversary Controlled Application" to include websites, desktop applications, mobile applications, and augmented or immersive reality applications operated directly or indirectly by ByteDance Ltd. or TikTok. Under section 2(a) of the Act, the prohibitions of the Act with respect to these entities became effective on January 19, 2025.

I have the unique constitutional responsibility for the national security of the United States, the conduct of foreign policy, and other vital executive functions. To fulfill those responsibilities, I intend to consult with my advisors, including the heads of relevant departments and agencies on the national securiy concerns posed by TikTok, and to pursue a resolution that protects national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans. My Administration must also review sensitive intelligence related to those concerns and evaluate the sufficiency of mitigation measures TikTok has taken to date.

The unfortunate timing of section 2(a) of the Act -- one day before I took office as the 47th President of the United States -- interferes with my ability to assess the national security and foreign policy implications of the Act's prohibitions before they take effect. This timing also interferes with my ability to negotiate a resolution to avoid an abrupt shutdown of the TikTok platform while addressing national security concerns. Accordingly, I am instructing the Attorney General not to take any action to enforce the Act for a period of 75 days from today to allow my Administration an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward in an orderly way that protects national security while avoiding an abrupt shutdown of a communications platform used by millions of Americans.

Sec. 2. Action (a) I hereby order the Attorney General not to take any action on behalf of the United States to enforce the Act for 75 days from the date of this order, to permit my Administration an opportunity to determine the appropriate course of action with respect to TikTok. During this period, the Department of Justice shall take no action to enforce the Act or impose any penalties against any entity for any noncompliance with the Act, including for distributing, maintaining, or updating (or enabling the distribution, maintenance, or updating) of any foreign adversary controlled application as defined in the Act. In light of this direction, even after the expiration of the above-specified period, the Department of Justice shall not take any action to enforce the Act or impose any penalties against any entity for any conduct that occurred during the above-specified period or any period prior to the issuance of this order, including the period of time from January 19, 2025, to the signing of this order.

(b) The Attorney General shall take all appropriate action to issue written guidance to implement the provisions of subsection (a).

(c) I further order the Attorney General to issue a letter to each provider stating that there has been no violation of the statute and that there is no liability for any conduct that occurred during the above-specified period, as well as for any conduct from the effective date of the Act until the issuance of this Executive Order.

(d) Because of the national security interests at stake and because section 2(d) of the Act vests authority for investigations and enforcement of the Act only in the Attorney General, attempted enforcement by the States or by private parties represents an encroachment on the powers of the Executive. The Attorney General shall exercise all available authority to preserve and defend the Executive's exclusive authority to enforce the Act.

Sec. 3. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

(i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

“This will go a long way to ensuring we can have the best and the brightest filling our law enforcement ranks,” Florida’s Republican attorney general, Ashley Moody, said in April last year as DeSantis announced one-time $5,000 bonuses for new recruits.

However, among the almost 600 officers who moved to Florida and received the bonus – or were recruited in state – are a sizable number who either arrived with a range of complaints against them, or have since accrued criminal charges, the online media outlet Daily Dot has discovered.

They include a former trainee deputy with the Escambia county sheriff’s office charged with murdering her husband; an officer with the Miramar police department fired for domestic battery and kidnapping; and a former member of the New York police department (NYPD) who was hired by the Palm Beach police department having once been accused of an improper sexual proposition.

That officer, named by the Daily Dot as Daniel Meblin, was also part of a $160,000 settlement by the NYPD for violence at a 2020 protest against the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd in which officers were accused of beating Black males without provocation.

A Palm Beach police spokesperson told the Daily Dot that Meblin – who had complaints against him including abuse of authority and sexually propositioning a teenager – had disclosed his background during the hiring process, according to the NYPD watchdog 50-a.org.

He has been an “exemplary” officer since he was hired in October 2022, the same month he left the NYPD, the spokesperson said, while denying a request to allow Meblin to be interviewed.

The Daily Dot compiled its report from state records it obtained from the Florida department of economic opportunity through a Freedom of Information Act request. The undated document lists payments of more than $8.8m split between 1,310 newly hired officers, with most receiving $6,693.44 from the signing-on and additional bonuses.

In a press release earlier this month, DeSantis announced the program had since grown to more than 2,000 officers, with a parallel rise in cost to more than $13.5m.

“To date, 595 law enforcement recruits from 49 states and US territories have relocated to Florida, including more than 215 recruits from California, Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania,” the statement said.

For its report, the Daily Dot matched information from the 50-a and NYPD databases, as well as published media reports, to officers’ names listed by the state.

It says it uncovered “an exodus” of officers to Florida law enforcement agencies from the NYPD in the wake of a backlash against the department for its brutal handling of racial justice protests in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

Among them were at least two dozen officers whose names matched those on the NYPD’s civilian complaint review board database, including some who, according to those complaints, “unlawfully pepper sprayed, assaulted, and pointed their firearms at suspects, as well as used chokeholds and offensive language regarding race and ethnicity”.

A civil rights lawsuit filed in 2018 against former NYPD sergeant Haitham Hussameldin alleged the officer used physical violence against a teenager on her way to school. Hussameldin, now employed by Florida’s Manapalan police department, accrued six formal complaints, including “multiple allegations of abuse of authority and overuse of physical force” in New York, the Daily Dot said. All the complaints were withdrawn or unsubstantiated.

Another former New York officer now employed in Florida was involved in two deaths, one of which led to a $100,000 civil settlement, the Daily Dot reported. And in October 2022, the Apopka police department hired as an officer Justin Burgos, 19, the son of a retired NYPD deputy inspector, who a year earlier was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving and obstruction of governmental administration for driving his car into protesters in Manhattan calling for the firing of an officer accused of beating a Black suspect.
