Talk of the "4B" movement on here is a great way to see a lot of people declare "oh, they'll probably be saying it's transphobic soon" before dropping unalloyed transphobia. I mean, the top posts are all posts mocking the idea that it's being used by TERFs posted by people whose bios identify themselves as radfems and whose tags say radfems can interact, and making posts just saying things like "leftists will claim it's transphobic to class trans women with men", so we're not exactly dealing with a savvy covert operation here
But that misses the larger point that in this context going on Strike Against Men is pointless. It's all based on the assumption that it's incels driving Trump's victory, but that's a very online assumption to make, because it was evangelicals, and evangelical men only date evangelical women. They won't even notice any movement, because there's no shortage of women who support the misogynistic culture of evangelical America.
This is a thorny thing to talk about since while they're all victims of patriarchal brainwashing, yeah, there are a substantial amount of women in this country who have embraced it, who are against feminism, who think they should be quiverfull housewives with a dozen kids and no notions, and who think that lifestyle should be forced on other women. Conservative women are often oppressed by the restrictions placed on women by conservative culture, but also many of them enforce those restrictions. The idea of a large group of women enthusiastically co-signing their oppression is haunting. So it's unsurprising that for many, the response to that is to ignore it: to retreat back into a worldview of men who support Trump and women who oppose him
The incel is a descriptor of a certain type of angry, isolated young man, but it's a term that's overused until it's presented as the bulk of the right. I regret to inform you most MAGA men are, in fact, getting laid; they do have wives and girlfriends, who are themselves often MAGA. A majority of white women voted for Trump, after all. Of course presenting women as a united front for liberation against a lonely oppressor class would sound more appealing than that reality, but it's also a useless model for accomplishing anything, since it's, well, not reality

The Real Housewives of Melbourne as a Site of 'Feminist Exchange', Featuring Neither Realism Nor Housewives
It is a typical evening. I sit down, and begin to watch the second season of The Real Housewives of Melbourne, eager to see a new iteration of cast members uncover their unreachably exotic lifestyles and dramas over the course of a season. A season recap plays, and, following it, comes what I find to be my most anticipated part of watching a new season: the housewives’ taglines. Gina Liano arrives on screen, with a lion’s mane of hair and a golden floor-length gown. The word ‘GINA’ appears on screen in large, gold letters as Gina herself crosses her heavily fake-tanned arms and declares ‘I deal in fact, not friction.’
Gina openly alludes to the dualism of ‘friction’ and ‘fiction’ that occupy uneasily close spaces in The Real Housewives, recognising the artificiality of its combat. But does ‘fact’ always have to stand in opposition to this ‘friction’? How can ‘fact’ be defined when used from entirely within the constructed setting of The Real Housewives? How does is actuality expressed across a medium of pure fiction? Of course, her tagline also alludes to what became Gina’s ‘brand’ across the first season. She reiterates to other cast members, and the eager audience, her profession as a lawyer, and thus, her inferred proximity to ‘truth’: ‘I’m a lawyer darling, I deal in fact.’(1) The tagline openly confronts the uneasy rules that constitute the narrative universes constructed in reality television. In one line, she references her societal role as a lawyer, her disdain for conflict and ‘friction’, as well as gesturing towards the construction of the narrative that she participates in.
‘I deal in fact, not friction’, The Real Housewives of Melbourne (Season 2, Episode 1), Matchbox Entertainment, January 2014, online video recording, Hayu <https://www.hayu.com/player/episode/29538344255> [accessed 20/07/2023].
Under this context, where do ‘fiction’ and ‘facts’ begin, end and intersect in the realm of reality TV, or, more precisely, in the unusual positionality of the documentary-soap-drama hybrid? Gina’s tagline illuminates these questions rather than answering them directly. More precisely, she references a ‘reality TV’ that has a troubled relation to ‘reality’ itself. What we see here is a co-opting of actuality into fiction, and, to invoke Slavoj Žižek, we see a procedure of offering a product deprived of its substance.(2) It is the cinematic form of cream without fat or coffee without caffeine: it is ‘real housewives’ with no realism nor housewives. Furthermore, nested in this overarching narrative construct, a construct which serves to provide a ‘real’ slice of life, according to The Real Housewives’ executive commentary, are the performances which constitute the identities of the cast member herself.(3) The performances of gender, class and race are mediated through the performance demanded of reality television and documentary forms, then edited and reassembled further beyond recognition in the pursuit of plot and storyline.
I take Žižek’s sentiment of ‘[the obfuscated] line that separates fiction from reality’ and extend it into the realm of woman-centric narrative reality television.(4) In this pursuit, I examine how real-life identities are reconfigured into characters, the ways in which this impacts performances of gender, class and race, and what these processes reveal about the ‘real world’ that they are drawn from. The overarching aim is to trace the boundaries of how reality television deals with what Angela McRobbie describes as an ‘exchange for feminism’; the subversion of ‘progressively’ coded media into a narrative structure that continues to restrain its subjects and reinforce stereotypes.(5) While The Real Housewives of Melbourne ostensibly seeks to empower women through its platforming of their lives, it only platforms the lives of those who already hold privilege, while ironically diminishing and humiliating them and their subordinates. This coincides with a culture-wide co-opting of progressive ideals in their assimilation into neoliberal capitalism, wherein they are substituted for their opposites. Of course, according to Judith Butler, this overarching categorisation and platforming of ‘women’ as a stable category is in itself a process of restriction, as she suggests that ‘the category of “women,” the subject of feminism, is produced and restrained by the very structures of power through which emancipation is sought.’(6) Thus, parallels emerge between the platforming of women in The Real Housewives and their restraint in a variety of ways; the subscription to the category of ‘woman’, the privileging of already privileged lifestyles, and the promoted humiliation of its cast members.
Indeed, the narratives surrounding ‘empowerment’ itself mark a shift towards a neoliberally individualised expression of womanhood; a Foucaultian, commodified neoliberal woman, who is subjected to the subverting core tenets of McRobbie’s ‘feminist exchange’.(7) The ‘empowerment’ enacted by The Real Housewives appears to instead be a process of elevation from an already economically privileged status into one that is also socially privileged: the subject commodifies not just as a rich woman, but is culturally exported as a celebrity too. As an extension to this, Brenda Weber examines elevations to celebrity status as she proposes that celebrity status signifies the combination of image and charisma as currency in an Americanised neoliberal global marketplace of personality.(8) For the power-hungry aspiring Housewife, pure economic wealth does not suffice; she must translate her personality and identity into a commodity from which she may reap social wealth.

Star trek's a story about the triumvirate friendship of kirk, spock, and mccoy. Always has been.
Sad people projecting romance onto kirk and spocks and bones' friendship often need a friend themself, from the sad lonely housewives who invented slash with them in the 1960s or terminally online people today
of course it is about the triumvirate. have i ever denied the existence of this equisite trio's friendship?
and yeah, sure, go ahead and call me a sad, lonely, terminally online person - i am a little bit of all of them - but you cannot fucking tell me that the way the relationship between spock and kirk is written - particularly spock's death scene in twok - is not the way you'd expect from a romantic relationship. there are plenty, plenty of examples of scenes that can very easily be read as romantic when you look at them. the way that nimoy and shatner played them (whether bill likes it or not, lmao) also doesn't help make it appear platonic.
you may not agree with looking at everything through a queer lens (sorry, all four of mine are gay as fuck) or a romance lens even, but none of that will change that people see romance in those kinds of scenes, because the narrative devices applied can be read as such. you know, there's this thing about consuming media, not sure if you've heard of it - interpretation. it makes things more fun and more interesting, because there may be more than one way to look at things. and you know, in this world, sometimes things are not black and white.
#have your own interpretation#let others have theirs#i sure will always see tos spirk as gay as hell thank you#anon#asks

Hello! 🎀
I just read your thoughts on the pretty privilege as well as the tags mentioning the American mindset. I might be off topic a bit but it reminded me of a thought I had a while ago - it often seems that Americans (those I’ve seen online at least) are somewhat striving towards a general and sometimes uniform “prettiness”, whether it be because of the privilege it gives or not. All the heatless or elaborate hairstyles (the attention to hair is the biggest thing here I think) and everyday makeup, jumping on trends (like the stanley cups) way more than we do in Europe. None of this is bad of course but I’ve never seen it on such a big scale outside of the US. Even when browsing European influencers’ accounts they usually seem to just leave their hair as it is and let themselves be themselves instead of part of almost identical group of pretty girls with voluminous curls, long lashes and water bottles in hand.
What are your thoughts on this? Your posts are always interesting to read 😌 (If I’ve ventured too far off the topic of pretty privilege I apologise, the tags emboldened me to share my observation)
Hi!!!🌹🌹
This is a really interesting point. I was thinking about it a lot, because I do remember a certain look at my school when I was a teen (tank top with lace under a grey/black/blue cardigan, dark skinny jeans, Pearl earrings, straight hair in a ponytail. An army of conservative housewives…). But I don’t remember the “people rushing into a store to buy out a cup” mentality, nor do I see it these days.
So maybe I would say I do think there are uniform ideas of pretty here, too, down to “pretty girl uniforms”. That’s a topic I’m really fascinated by, I highly believe that you can DRESS in a way that will make you attractive by proxy because it’s what “attractive people” wear. However, I think this standard can vary depending on where you are — for example the pretty girl uniform at MY school would fall flat completely at another school. Just like fake lashes, fake lips, fake tan and lots of beige and pastels might be the rage in the US, but in Europe the beauty standards are different (as much as social media is trying to erase any non-US look). However, I was searching my mind and realised I simply know too little about influencers to really verify that claim. I think a problem that might contribute to the uniform standards of beauty in and outside of the US is the “aestheticisation” of things. Pilates being an aesthetic, reading or gardening or tomatoes all being an aesthetic that comes with a full on dress code. That’s also probably most prevalent around teenagers who haven’t settled in their identity just yet and thus are more likely to cling to a “package deal” (“I like reading, so I’ll dress like a reader”). But also humans ARE pack animals, so maybe this uniformity in some way also gives us a feeling of security? The need to belong never fully goes away, after all.
But then again, to return to the other point: I definitely agree that the strange aggression the USAmericans have when it comes to those trends seems not to be this prevalent here. The “craze” for something. Cups, eyeshadow palettes, bags… I just don’t see it much over here. So I’m conflicted. I do think the attitudes can be more relaxed, but I do assume that there are still beauty standards — maybe we just don’t notice them as much because we’re more involved in them? In contrast, we see the US influencers and THEIR pretty girl uniform from the outside.
Thank you so much for your ask aHH!! It definitely wasn’t off topic, it was super interesting :’)!! I feel like I got a little sidetracked in the middle there haha but this is really fascinating. I can already tell I’ll be turning it in my head for the next few days. Thank you!!! :D
#I still think our old pretty girl uniform slaps tbh#I always wanted to dress that way but it never looked right on me back then I think#sigh!!!

100, 98, 74!
100: Toko/Byakuya. You have better options for gayness on either end, and it's just such a miserable concept. She can do so much better. It's the same vibe as when flashforward endings put all your faves in miserable heterosexual breeding relationships and make the women housewives. I react to that being shipped over Tokomaru how most people react to NTR.
98: How rare we talking here? I feel like Despaircest doesn't really properly fit "rare", especially since it was mainstream af until the purity cult got harassy over it (becomes apparent when you start diving through old-ass tumblrs for art). Kaede/Tsumugi tends to be underloved for being so heavily made apparent in canon and the underlying toxicity of the reveal.
I guess the rarest favorite would have to go to Towashima. Feels weird to not have the answer here be a crack ship. There's like, what, around ten or so "this is absolutely ship" pieces of art, and not even a ton of non-ship art which is frankly insane. As for fanfiction, well see how much of the tag on AO3 is me. I found no results online for "Towashima" before I first used the name a few blogs ago, so I gotta give myself credit for coining the damn ship name.
74: I have so many unpopular opinions lmao, divided up across various segments of the fandom. V3 is fine (like, it's my least favorite in the series but still better than most media I've seen, which is a fuckton, it's just competing with its own franchise which is an unfair battle), UDG is the best work in the franchise, Towashima is heavily implied to be canon by logic and evidence, the dubs are trash, the tone and atmosphere of DR1 is superior to SDR2, most times people say someone was "wasted" by being killed off are completely failing to understand the point (in most full-of-death stories you know who will die by the fact they don't have an arc or just finished their arc, but that's not how sudden death works irl, the entire point is to portray death as tragic and a gutting hollow void that doesn't give a fuck about you finishing your arc), Komaru isn't remotely "normal" and that's the point + why she was selected to become the Successor, and more.
And of course, the opinion that the entire concept of an anti in the Danganronpa fandom is laughably stupid and absurd, the franchise constantly is doing things they hate, the only reason they're here is because they wanted to fit in with people and be a part of the popular thing and they're no better than any other poser.

(Be prepared to HATE me~)
Unconventional AUs: Sentry Skull x Billy x Matt + ghost AU~
ACTUALLY, you be prepared to hate me.
Skull is a new, rising musician; he's just got his new paycheck. Billy is a professor in quantum chemistry, and the two of them have been together for quite a while now.
They've also been saving for a while to move out of the shared apartment they had been living in— their flatmate, a certain Jason Scott, being a little too annoying with the constant martial arts practice, and not particularly liking the three-persons living conditions— and actually move into something of a proper home.
It's weird when Jason's boyfriend, Zack, approaches them with an offer of a house he had seen on sale a few days back, in a locality familiar to him, where his parents have lived for ages, a seemingly perfect place to move into. It's a nice two floor bungalow, neat lawns, lovely society, everything just about perfect... except the fact that its unbelievably cheap.
Skull is initially reluctant, believing something's a 100% wrong with the place, and that they'd be moving into some serial killer's mansion, with bodies buried in the basement, if they do.
Billy isn't hearing any of that, though, because its the house he's always dreamed of having with Skull.
Skull finally gives in, they buy the house, they move in. Everything's normal, the neighbours are nice, even though they gossip occasionally, behind their backs.
There's a very nice Miss Kwan living next door, and she brings them dinner on their first evening there, along with some nice potted plants which she says are a lovely housewarming gift.
It's nice, really.
The first few months in the house are lovely, even though Skull notices some weird things happening every now and then.
It's weird, how someone keeps flushing the toilet at nights, when both of them are lying together in bed, and there's absolutely nobody else around, or how that one ceiling fan is always so creaky, no matter how many electricians you call over to fix them, or how there's a wailing noise coming from one of the pantries, or the ever so flickering lights. Some days it's good, there's no strange happenings, other days its fucking awful.
It doesn't take Skull long to realise they're being haunted by a ghost.
Well, fuck you Billy, I TOLD YOU THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS HOUSE!! OUR FLATMATE IS APPARENTLY A GHOST NOW.
Billy doesn't believe it, of course. He's gonna find a scientific reason for it all.
Meanwhile, Skull's doing his own research. He talks to Mrs. Taylor, Zack's mom, and then to a few of the other old gossipy housewives and old men and then strikes up a conversation with Miss Kwan too, about what is up with the house.
Turns out, he was right. There was a ghost who was haunting them.
That’s actually why the house was so cheap. It absolutely was considered haunted, and the previous owners had wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible.
So who was the ghost exactly? Billy didn't seem to want to move out at all, so it was maybe better to drive out the ghost itself?
Matthew Cook. He found out about him after looking through tons of articles online, followed by searching for newspaper clippings at the library, and talking to that one very, very, verrryyy old man in the county, a certain Mr. Oliver, who seemed to be the only person alive who could recount the tale o'tragedy as old as time, vividly.
Matthew Cook had been about the same age as Skull and Billy when he had committed suicide. He'd hanged himself from that one particular ceiling fan in the lobby that kept creaking no matter what.
Nobody knew why he did it, but it was all in the papers. This old lady, who had been his landlady, Grace Sterling, had been imprisoned for abetment of suicide, later on, and the house had been sold off, and moved from hands to hands to hands, because the ghost apparently didn't like anybody else living in the house.
Skull wasn't very convinced.
The ghost felt rather... depressed... to him.
Well, Skull considered, the ghost was bound to get lonely, right?
Maybe what he needed was just some comfort? Considering the ghost actually was Matthew cook, of course.
Skull needed confirmation, so calling a psychic— who seemed very young too be in the profession, and wore a pink bandana— to conduct a seance seemed like the best idea. They conveyed to the spirit that it was okay to talk to them, that Skull only wanted to help, that he knew it must've felt lonely for him, after all, and that a few friends could hurt no one, especially when Billy and Skull were here to stay.
It didn't work, of course.
But the very next morning, when Skull drowsily walked into the bathroom, he was shocked out of his gut to find a guy, as old as him, with a thick stubble, messy hair, and wearing a crimson letterman jacket, sitting on the toilet, howling in sadness, even though very faint sounds escaped him.
The jacket read Matthew Cook...
oh boy. Billy wasn't gonna believe this.
Thanks for the ask :3

Hi! I was reading your answers about an author using their own photo even if publishing under a pseudonym, and it occurred to me - what about the author bio? Is the same true here, does the author use their own bio details or a version of them - or can they get really wild here and make stuff up? E.g. Real Name was born in Phoenix, studied Astronomy, and has 4 kids and 59 pets. Is some/all of this true of Fake Name too or can Fake Name be born in Montreal, studied Astrology, and has 1,000 pets?!
I think you'd probably keep it simple and hew pretty close to the truth -- it would be a pain in the ass to sort out what you had said about yourself where later, and I think general practice is to not LIE about things blatantly. Of course, you don't need to divulge personal intel about yourself if you don't want to, and you can pick-and-choose what to put in a bio and what to leave out, so...
For your real name nonfiction book about constellations: Real Name was born in Arizona and spent a childhood staring at the night sky of the open desert trying to find pictures in the stars. That led to a degree in Astronomy and a passion for sharing the secrets of the sky to others, including her brood of kids and pets, some of whom are more interested than others.
For your pseudonymous novel about sexy vampires: Fake Name found her interest in vampiric lore as a teenager reading Twilight fanfiction. After a stint living in a drafty shack in Forks, Washington, she realized that maybe creating vampires of her own was a better bet than searching for fictional ones. She now lives in a probably-haunted house with a wonderful but non-sparkly husband, some kids, too many pets, and -- so far -- no werewolves.
(If it is one of those things where it's an "open secret" that you have a fake name and you are totally not hiding it, you are just doing it for branding/non-confusing-the-audience purposes, you could also just SAY it, something like"Fake Name spends her days writing NYT Bestselling nonfiction for grownups under another name, and her nights watching Real Housewives, drinking chablis, and making questionable online purchases. This is her first romance novel." OR WHATEVER.)
All of this can be true of the same person - we contain multitudes!

Rachel Leviss is an American folk hero, a soldier who did her duty and who was disparaged when it was time to come home. The people who sent her in to do that job did nothing to defend her honor when she did her job exactly as they wanted. Why do people think they pay actor/models to become cast members of Vanderpump Rules? To celebrate the virtue of marriage? To rank holistic clinics in Beverly Hills? Having to leave Vanderpump Rules for infidelity among cast members is like having to leave the Keebler Elf tree because you smell like cookies. I have heard a Real Housewives houswife say the stars of these shows are getting paid to take the abuse on social media—because everything else about being a reality TV star is great! Considering how I have personally witnessed highly educated and healthy people brought to their knees by social media mocking / mobbing, I do not doubt the wounds inflicted on high profile cast members are painful and real. I would, in fact, not be surprised to hear anyone say that the realest thing about reality television is the shame you have to encounter online. That is why the producers should have given her a six-figure bonus and a development deal when it was apparent her choice to Vanderpump was bringing in such a ratings boost. That Rachel left the show to attend a mental health clinic and resorted to social media continuance / legal revenge seems far closer to to the ugliness of reality than Tom Sandoval being in a self-named band. If she loses poise or social stability because she was abandoned by the people who sent her in, can we be surprised if she goes—like John Rambo in First Blood—up against the establishment? Some fans will miss using Rachel / Raquel as a social media piñata, of course, but as the manipulative theatre of "Scandoval" loses traction and we find our "who cares?" footing there may be great embarrassment among those who participated in the shaming of this woman.

Me watching younger and older YJ fans push for less adult storyline and knowing to keep ratings the writers may just do that.
But, fr fr I'm a little sad if that does happen, we finally get adult queer representation that isn't one note and people aren't so here for it. I really hope the next season is more balanced of slow to fast and visually more horroresque. Still it was personally refreshing to see someone with a black queer family and think that could be me in 20 years sans the sleepwalking cult stuff. Then to see a full ensemble of women in that age range struggling to hold their trauma in broken pots is nice. Especially because the show is not a dramedy like Hacks or a limited series like Mrs. America. This show is sits very in between Desperate Housewives and Castle Rock/Penny Dreadful. Which is a great space that needed more interest but those aspects may get shoved to the back of the freezer along with some of the more interesting adult plots. The story does need more room to breath and for other characters to get a starter course in the wilderness. Which may be the right move IF they don't get a full 10 episodes or more, but that doesn't mean it won't suck for a trade off to keep the seasons coming.
I love the 96/97 timeline I really do and get the need for it to take focus as were really in it now. Just would hate for that part of the story to completely wipe out the older storyline or postcrash and it turn into a Riverdale or Stranger Things type of show which it was not marketed as. The writers got me fully on board with more teen (and adult) Van going forward cause her role in the chaos is getting interesting af same for Akilah. But, as I get older, i am 27 now, I naturally am starting to find it harder to relate to the younger counterparts. Which is a little scary, but I think its majorly because that market of tv is saturated in a thats all we get. Everything feels a little like we jump from one show to the next and there is no reprieve or space from teenage angst or the pitfalls of youth. The shows not focused on that arent promoted as well or focus on things personally idgaf about like gold panning. Fountain of youth focused shows should exist and are important i usually advocate for them, but I just hate that studios might make it all the tv we get so that they can make money. With the strike going on we have 0 clue what will come out or be greenlit but with so much cancelled that cover the older age range, queer people, etc. and isn't business background i am a bit like hmm about where the tv market will go. The TV market often bends to the loudest voices and the biggest wallets.
Post strike and fair wages being given, a market that solely appeals to the younger market and those who don't want a deep plot is kinda terrifying. Amp up the action, visuals, and drama but delete the expose and complexities entirely because it will keep viewership is such a luke warm take. And im seeing a lot of that in fan spaces in general but currently online for yellowjackets. A tv formula like thatvfeels very hamster on a wheel to me. I settle for established older women and a wrench of trauma thrown into their lives, especially with queer non cis-men rep, cause there's not much for my age range that's specific to that age range. I don't think I could settle for "wilderness baby" theory 4000 and "Laura lee is alive" theory 700 for a full 3 more seasons with 0 Shauna playing frogger with her minivan.
