How the Todorokis call each other (Part 1)
So since I researched for it for my fic here are a bit of the words the Todorokis use to call/talk about themselves and each other in the Japanese manga (occasionally comparing it with the English translation).
Note that I won’t report names that are too general (when one of the children talks of them as his father ('chichi' 父) or his mother ('haha' 母) or when they refers to their family ('kazoku' 家族) and that sometimes, in English, the characters seemed to call someone in a certain way but the same didn’t apply in Japanese.
In order to make things simple I’ll group the characters when a Japanese term is used multiple times, so as to explain what it means only once. In part 2, as well as ending with the list of ways they call each others, I’ll put a summary for each character, so that if you want to know what a specific character use, you can do it more quickly.
Just remember the Todorokis, being a family, tend to use casual speech to talk among them, so they use many words which would be rude if they were to use them with other people but which are perfectly okay between family members. Also in the Japanese family hierarchy, Enji is above his children and wife, Rei is above her children and, in regard to the children, older siblings are above younger siblings.
It's worrth to say I’m not Japanese. The explanations of Japanese terms come from me reading plenty of Japanese dictionaries and grammars but I might have done mistakes or missed something... or missed some way the Todorokis used to refer to each other (as there's actually plenty of quotes). Consider yourself warned and feel welcome to write me if you think I missed something.
HOW DO THEY SAY “I”
Ore (俺/おれ Lit. “Oneself”)
In normal situations all the Todoroki males use ‘ore’.
This term is the most casual form of self-address used by men, which establishes a sense of masculinity. It can be seen as rude, depending on the context, as it’s suitable for conversations among close friends or relatives but not in polite conversation. It emphasizes one’s own status when used with peers and with those who are younger or of lesser status. Among close friends or family, its use conveys familiarity rather than masculinity or superiority. It was used by both genders until the late Edo period and still is in some dialects.
It’s notable how Tōya used ‘ore’ even before Natsuo’s birth so when he was 4 or younger (Natsuo was born after he turned 4). Very likely, despite being so young, he was copying his father’s speech pattern.
Watashi (私/わたし Lit. “One own person”)
If the male Todorokis use ‘ore’, the female Todorokis use ‘watashi’.
Don’t mistake ‘watashi’ for a female only way to say “I”. Only in casual speech, it is typically only used by women because if used by men in casual context it may be perceived as either stiff or feminine however, in formal or polite contexts, this is gender neutral (for example All Might uses it, his catchphrase “I am here” in Japanese is ‘watashi ga kita’ 私が来た lit. “I have arrived”).
That’s also why in chap 306, when speaking with the press, Enji switches to ‘watashi’ so as to sound as polite/formal as possible (before switching to ‘ore’ again when he tells them to watch him) and, in the anime, they also had him use ‘watashi’ in episode 46 when he answered to the phone so as to convey he was being formal/polite.
Boku (僕/ぼく Lit. “Servant”)
Used by males of all ages and very often used by boys (for example Midoriya uses ‘boku’ hence the title ‘Boku no Hero Academia’… but All for One also uses it so it’s not just for boys), ‘boku’ is perceived as humble and therefore polite, but can also carry an undertone of feeling young when used by males of older age. In addition to this it’s also used when casually giving deference.
Why I included ‘boku’ in this list if I said all the Todoroki males use ‘ore’?
Well, we actually have some exceptions in which they used ‘boku’.
Differently from Tōya who used ‘ore’ from a very young age, Shōto as a child of 5, used ‘boku’, likely not having the wish to emulate his father’s speech pattern. Interesting enough we know however that Tōya, as an adult, used ‘boku’ when he made his whole speech to the nation which was transmitted during the final stage of the Paranormal Liberation War Arc as, during it, he changed his normally rude speech pattern for one much more polite and humble.
Lastly, although not really a Todoroki but still related to them in a fashion (he’s probably a cousin from Rei’s side since he’s also an Himura), Geten regularly uses ‘boku’.
Their own name
Normally used by small children it’s however also a very feminine and kind of childish way to refer to oneself.
Fuyumi, before Natsuo’s birth therefore when she was 3 or younger, used not ‘watashi’ but ‘Fuyumi’ to refer to herself.
Kono (この “This”) + their own name or personal pronoun
In chap 55 when Enji tells to Gran Torino he will be enough to beat the Nōmu, Enji uses ‘kono Endeavor’ (このエンデヴァー “This Endeavor”). In English this comes out odd and, considering what was said before, you might think it’s either childish or girlish but in this case, with the addition of ‘kono’ the sentence actually remarks the name in a “no one else but Endeavor can do it” way. In the same way in chap 154, when Enji uses this time ‘kono ore’ to tell Hawks if he really believed he was in troubles, it remarks ‘me’ although this time is in the opposite way as to imply “everyone else but him would be in troubles”.
FATHER (父) AND MOTHER (母)
There are various ways in Japanese to say “father” and “mother” that vary for levels of politeness.
Okā-san (お母さん/おかあさん “Mother”)
The addition of the initial ‘o’ (お) and the ‘–san’ (さん) at the end tell us this is a polite way to refer to her, although, since it’s the most common way to call your mother in Japan, even though technically it’s closer to “mother”, it’s perfectly fine to translate it as “mom”, which is currently the most common way to call your mother in English. Note that ‘okā-san’ can also be used to talk about someone else’s mother or for your mother-in-law. Rei is referred as such by all her children, regardless of their age, and even calls herself as such when talking with a young Tōya. Plus this is also how she calls her mother. In the English manga occasionally you also see her called as “mommy” but in Japanese she’s always called ‘okā-san’ only and not in a less formal way (kā-san, okā-chan, kā-chan, mama) and the choice to occasionally translate ‘okā-san’ as “mommy” is likely because the translator felt it would be more fitting for a young child to use it.
Kā-san (お母さん/おかあさん “Mother”)
Same as before but the lack of the initial ‘o’ makes it slightly less polite/formal. It's how Enji calls Rei when talking with Fuyumi. Natsuo will also call Rei as such when telling Enji not to stay close to her and the others or he'll only heat them up further in chap 421. Interesting enough, it's also how Īda calls his mother, even though the English version goes for a more formal "mother".
Otō-san (お父さん/おとうさん “Father”)
This is the equivalent to ‘okā-san’ for fathers … but it’s not equally popular as ‘okā-san’ in the Todoroki house. Like ‘okā-san’, 'otō-san' would be closer to "father" but it's okay to translate it "dad" and the English translator occasionally decided to translate it as "daddy" when it was a small child using it. Notably, of all of Enji’s children, only Tōya and Fuyumi still use it, while Shōto, as a child of 5, used it but now doesn’t anymore. Also Rei called Enji as such when talking with a young Tōya.
Oyaji (親父/おやじ “Father” or “Old man” lit. “parent father”)
This is a rather nuanced word. Let’s say it’s a more colloquial-sounding way to say “father” which can also used to refer to middle-aged or elderly men. It’s not exactly rude (though some Japanese people consider it as such) but it’s definitely very informal, similar to saying “my old man” in English but (often) without an affection. Again, it's nuanced and depends on the contest. Within one’s own family, teenage and older children, especially males, tend to start using the term to address their fathers at home. In public though, older children will typically call their own fathers ‘otō-san’. Using such word in many cases gives a ‘rough guy’ vibe. Teenager Shōto uses it to talk with or about Enji, regardless he's at home or not, and he’s clearly doing it because he refuse to show him respect, opposite to how he still call Rei ‘Okā-san’ instead than the ‘oyaji’ equivalent, ‘ofukuro’ (お袋). This contrasts sharply with Tōya, who instead regularly uses ‘otō-san’ (though if he does so in a mocking way or as a call back to the past since the past never dies it’s up to speculation) and uses ‘oyaji’ only in a couple of circumstances (chap 301 and 390). In chap 301 he’s clearly trying to keep distance from him as he speaks to himself since he calls him ‘oyaji’ and ‘Todoroki Enji’ instead than his usual ‘otō-san’. In chap 390 he’s being deliberately as rude as possible as he tells him to die. More about it later. It's possible Natsuo would also use 'oyaji' to call Enji, though so far we only saw him either calling him by his Hero name or using 'anta' (あんた) to call him. More about it later.
BIG BROTHER (兄) AND BIG SISTER (姉)
Same as with “father” and “mother” there are various ways in Japanese to say “big brother” and “big sister” that vary for levels of politeness. Note that in theory in a Japanese family the children aren’t all equal but older siblings are hierarchically higher than younger siblings and younger siblings own them respect.
Nē-chan (姉ちゃん)/Nē-san (姉さん)/Onē-chan (お姉ちゃん)
‘Nē’ (姉) is the word used for “big sister”. It can be used alone or after the name of the person in question and the level of politeness changes according to the suffixes and prefixes used. ‘O’ (お “honorable”) gives an extra layer of politeness, '-san' (さん) is your standard polite suffix (when added to a name is generally translated as “Mr.”, “Mrs.”) while –chan (ちゃん) is generally affectionate and expresses closeness and endearment.
Natsuo calls Fuyumi ‘nē-chan’, which is clearly familiar and affectionate, but Shōto calls her ‘nē-san’, therefore sounding more polite and distant. This can reflect the fact that Natsuo grew up closer to Fuyumi and is also closer in age compared to Shōto but might also be a reflection of how they were raised. When Rei told Natsuo to protect his big sister in chap 388, she told him to protect his ‘onē-chan’ (the ‘o’ adds a tone of politeness, but likely Rei always uses it as a way for Rei to remind Natsuo to be polite with his older sister), therefore she might have encouraged him to use a more endearing and close term for his sister, something she might not have done with Shōto merely because he wasn’t allowed to interact with Fuyumi (and the rest of his siblings) when Rei was living with them. In chap 192 Fuyumi calls herself his ‘nē-san’ when talking with Shōto, likely because after Rei left she took up a mother role to him and Shōto might have ended up calling her as such in response. Enji also, when talking with Natsuo, used ‘nē-san’ to talk about Fuyumi and he might have done the same with Shōto so that he ended up doing the same.
Nī (兄)/Nī-chan (兄ちゃん)/Nī-san (兄さん)/Aniki (兄貴)
‘Nī’ (兄) is the word used for “big brother”. The level of politeness changes according to the suffixes and prefixes used, same as ‘Nē’. Now… Tōya is called just ‘Tōya Nī’ by all his siblings and Shōto calls Natsuo ‘Natsu Nī’ as well, no suffixes or prefixes attached. Using just ‘Nī’ it’s very informal and childish but it started likely due to Fuyumi and Tōya being very close in age (11 months of difference) and therefore being allowed to a lower level of formality. Since Shōto was kept apart from his siblings and this lead Rei to stay away from her other children to take care of him as well, Natsuo likely copied Fuyumi’s way to call Tōya and, eventually, Shōto ended up doing the same with both his older brothers despite not being close to them, probably merely because he mimicked the way they talked. Note that when talking to Shōto in chap 34, Enji referred to Tōya as his big brother, he called Tōya his ‘nī-san’. Tōya instead referred to himself as his ‘nī-chan’ twice when talking with Shōto, which could have been mocking but could have also been the way he used to refer to himself with his siblings as a kid. In chap 388 and in chap 244/350 Natsuo and Shōto, when arguing with Tōya drops the childish and familiar ‘nī’, which would be unfitting of the situation, and switch to ‘aniki’ (兄貴). ‘Aniki’ is still a way you can use to call your older brother (‘ani’ is another way to read the kanji for “big brother” (兄) and '-ki' (貴), when added after nouns related to people expresses love and respect) but it’s considered less formal than ‘onī-san’/‘nī-san’, yet not endearing or childish like ‘nī’/‘nī-chan’/‘onī-chan’ as it has a rough note (kind of like ‘oyaji’). It’s notable they don’t use just ‘aniki’ but add a pejorative. Natsuo goes for a ‘KUSO aniki’ (クソ兄貴 “shitty/damn big brother”) while Shōto, who is less close to his big brother, goes for a tamer ‘baka aniki’ (馬鹿兄貴 “stupid older brother”). More about this though, later on.
YOUNGER BROTHERS AND YOUNGER SISTERS
Normally they’re referred just by name, however in Fuyumi and Natsuo’s case they actually have the equivalent of ‘pet names’ of some sort.
Tōya calls Fuyumi ‘Fuyumi-chan’ (冬美ちゃん) and Natsuo ‘Natsu-kun’ (夏くん). As said before ‘-chan’ is generally affectionate and expresses closeness and endearment and, in case it’s attached to the name, is used from older person to younger person. You might want to translate it something like “little Fuyumi” or “dear Fuyumi”. As for Natsuo… ‘-kun’ (君/くん) is usually used for addressing males younger than the speaker. Boys in the same age group can call each other with ‘-kun’ (Midoriya, for example, adds ‘–kun’ to the surname of all his male classmates… while Shōto instead calls them simply by surname). Sometimes male office workers call their younger female colleagues with it. This is not rude but a sign of familiarity. You might want to translate it something like “young Natsu” but just "Natsu" would be fine as well. Interesting enough while Fuyumi calls Natsuo just ‘Natsu’, Rei also calls him ‘Natsu-kun’, Natsuo being the only one among her kids she doesn’t call just with his full name. Shōto is the only one of the younger Todoroki kids who didn't have a suffix attached when called by his older siblings. As said before, being called something different by just your name is not mandatory but it's possible in Shōto's case this is not happening due to him being kept away from them or due to Tōya having been the one who decided the 'pet names' for his younger siblings.
HUSBAND AND WIFE
Again, there are various ways for a husband to call his wife and vice versa.
In Enji’s case though he commonly refers to/calls his wife as just ‘Rei’ and calls her ‘tsuma’ (妻 “wife”) only once, when talking about her and his children in chap 248.
Another common Japanese way to refer to your husband/wife is by calling them "you" (the wife would use ‘anata’ (あなた), the husband would use 'omae' (おまえ)). This often gets translated as "dear" in English manga.
In Rei’s case she usually calls Enji ‘anata’ (あなた), although, for obvious reasons, in the English manga in this case it doesn't get translated as "dear". In Enji's case he occasionally uses 'omae' for her, but since 'Rei' is his default way to call her and 'omae' is his default "you" pronoun for all his family, very likely his 'omae' with her isn't more meaningful than an ordinary "you". More about "you" later on.
Interesting enough in some houses once children are born, the parents start calling each other ‘Otō-san’ and ‘Okā-san’ and when talking with a young Tōya about Enji, Rei called Enji ‘Otō-san’ while Enji, when talking with Fuyumi, calls Rei ‘Kā-san’ but here it was likely done because they were talking with their children about the other parent and not because they are used to call each other in such way.
Interesting enough Nao didn’t use ‘anata’ for her husband but ‘Kotarō-san’.
THE CHILDREN
Enji refers to all his children by first name, while Rei does the same for all her children except Natsuo whom she calls ‘Natsu-kun’.
Both parents, when wanting to talk about their children without saying their name call them either ‘ko’ (子) or ‘kodomo’ (子ども). Both mean child (and can be pluralized) but 'ko’ (子) is a more general term for a child, which is often used in a neutral or formal context (even when the child is actually an adult) while ‘kodomo’ (子ども) is a more specific and inclusive term commonly used to refer to children in a more affectionate or informal way or to emphasize the innocence and vulnerability of children, often used in educational or parenting contexts (and, in the manga, generally used to refer to the Todoroki kids when they were… well, kids). I know I said I wouldn't mention nouns that are too general but, in this case, I’m mentioning all this because, although Enji has no problems in referring to his children as 'ko’ (子) in chap 31, while talking with All Might, Enji referred to Shōto as ‘ko’ (仔) which sounds the same as “child” (子 'ko’) but the kanji he uses is not the usual one for “child” (子) but this one (仔) which means “offspring” and, normally, is used for “young animals/cubs” or “young plants/seedlings”. It’s possible Enji is using it because, when he does, Horikoshi wants us to get the idea Enji is basically talking of how Shōto was breed and raised for the purpose of defeating All Might, as if he were some sort of racehorse, the full sentence being the following:
‘Kore dake oboe toke. ARE ha… izure kisama wo mo koeru HERO ni suru. Sō surubeku… tsukutta ko da’ 「これだけ覚えとけ。アレは…いずれ貴様をも越えるヒーローにする。そうするべく………つくった仔だ」 “Just remember this. That one we’re talking about… I’ll make him a hero that will surpass you someday. In order to do that… I had/trained/created that child.”
THE GRANPARENTS
In chap 31, when talking about his grandparents Shōto called them ‘haha no shinzoku’ (母の親族 “mother’s relatives”).
'Haha' is the word you use with people outside your group to talk about your mother.
'Shinzoku' (親族) is, under Japanese law, a term that refers to people who we are related to by blood or marriage (you can translate it also as "clan") so yes, it might not necessarily means Rei's parents. It's worth to remember the Himura were an important family with a family head who might not have necessarily be Rei's father (it could have been her grandfather or even her father's male heir), though, due to Geten's story and the scene we saw in chap 301 that in the Himura family the "family head" (当主 ‘tōshu’) was Rei's father.
By the way, the Todorokis instead mention often the 'kazoku' (家族 "family") which is the family unit formed by a married couple and their children.
Shōto might refer in such a formal way to his grandparents either because he's not close to them or because he's talking with Midoriya.
In chap 302 when he refers to his grandparents Tōya called them ‘Obā-chan-tachi’ (おばあちゃん達 “grandma and the others”).
The ‘o’ (お “honorable”) in 'obā-chan' gives an extra layer of politeness while '–chan' (ちゃん) is generally affectionate and expresses closeness and endearment. By using '-chan' and singling out his grandmother (who unlikely was the family head) instead than his grandfather Tōya sounds close to her.
It's possible though his grandfather died when he was younger, hence he referred to his grandmother.
For more about the Himura you might want to read my post about the Himura family.
WHO WORKS FOR THE TODOROKIS
In chap 302 Enji says he’ll hire more ‘shiyōnin’ (使用人 “servant/employee”).
In chap 249 Natsuo calls the person who used to cook for them ‘otetsuta’ (お手伝 “helper/maid”).
Enji, in his role as Hero, has also an 'untenshu' (運転手 "driver"), Kurumada Untenmaru, but we don't know how Enji or the other Todorokis call him, just that Kurumada calls Enji 'Endeavor' (and 'No.1' in the OAV) and uses 'anta' (あんた) with him (more about 'anta' later on), while he calls 'jarinko' (ジャリンコ) Shōto, Midoriya and Bakugō.
'Jarinko' (ジャリンコ/じゃりんこ/じゃりん子/砂利子) is an old fashioned word used to call a "student who can't keep up in school" but it's also used to say just "brat".
In theory, more than to the Todoroki family, Kurumada is connected to the Hero world, but since, according to his profile, he knows Enji by a looong time (and is one year older than him) I thought to include him as well.
HEROES AND VILLAINS
In Enji, Tōya and Shōto’s case, in addition to their own name they also have their Hero/Villain monikers, 'Endeavor' (エンデヴァー), 'Dabi' (荼毘 "cremation") and 'Shōto' (ショート yes, same as his name but written in katakana instead than kanji)… plus Enji also is defined by his ranking (‘No.2’ first, ‘No.1’ after). In some circumstances the family uses such names instead than the usual way they call them.
Interesting enough though, when Shōto interns under Enji, Enji calls him with his Hero name (which is still 'Shōto' but written in katakana so you can’t really notice it in the anime but it’s visible in the manga) and of course he called Tōya 'Dabi' until he discovered he was his son. After that moment he always called him just Tōya and I couldn’t find an instance in which he called him ‘Dabi’ again.
In fact, even after waking up in the hospital, Enji wants to say Endeavor is dead since he can’t kill a ‘Tairyō satsujin-sha’ (大量殺人者 “mass murderer”) (aka Tōya) but what he voices is instead he can’t kill his ‘musuko’ (むすこ) which means “son” (息子) and, when he finally fights Tōya, he ends up seeing him as the kid he was... making him unable to make a distinction between Tōya and Dabi. Once he acknowledges that Dabi IS indeed Tōya, he won't be able to go back see him as Dabi or call him as such, differently from others of his family members.
We never see Rei calling Enji 'Endeavor' but we see her calling Tōya 'Dabi' once, when she tells her husband he must fight him (during the rest of the discussion she called him 'Tōya' or 'ano ko' (あの子 “that child”))... as calling him 'Dabi' probably helps her to distance herself from how she's asking Enji to fight their son (Chap 302).
Natsuo called his father 'Endeavor' in chap 249, during the dinner at which Midoriya and Bakugō were invited. This seems to remark his wish not to acknowledge Enji as his father but as a stranger.
Natsuo also refers to his brother as 'Dabi' in chap 302, but more as something that was created more than as his brother, as he's also likely trying to distance himself from the idea Tōya and Dabi are one and the same.
At the same time Shōto called his father 'Endeavor' during the Stain case when asking to other Heroes about him (chap 55) and during his internship (chap 249), in short when he needed to acknowledge him as a Hero.
As for Tōya, of course Shōto called him 'Dabi' before the reveal. After the reveal, in chap 349 Shōto, before fighting Tōya, starts calling his brother just ‘Tōya’ (without the ‘nī’ (兄) which is kind of rude) then decides to switch to ‘Dabi’, either to acknowledge him as a Villain or to keep emotional distance from him. We know also that in the flashback in chap 352 called 'Dabi' his family's sin.
Tōya isn’t really prone to call Enji 'Endeavor' and does so only in few notable situations:
- prior to becoming Dabi, solely when telling Enji to look at him before attacking Shōto as a child (chap 301);
- when facing Enji as Dabi after Enji’s fight with the Nōmu (chap 190);
- when denouncing Enji on tv (Chap 290);
- during the Paranormal Liberation War when he attacked him (chap 292)... although during the battle he alternated calling him 'Endeavor' and 'otō-san';
- when he repeated what Skeptic told him, that Endeavor was at Gunga... but what's meaningful here is that the reading for 'Endeavor' is given as 'otō-san' (chap 374).
This seems to imply Tōya uses 'Endeavor' solely when he's talking to/about/him in his role as a Hero.
On the other side Tōya never calls Shōto with his Hero name… even though, of course, since it matches with his normal name, no one can realize it.
Now... I said the family tries to distance the idea that Tōya IS Dabi by calling him Dabi... but credits when it's due, Tōya himself said that Tōya died and Dabi was born so he too is keeping the two identities parted in a way... albeith he has no problems to refer himself as 'Tōya' and be called as such, both by his family and by Himeko, who switches on calling him from 'Dabi-kun' to 'Tōya-kun', so more than identities, we should probably say he means the person he once was 'died', as he started aiming for different things and behaving differently.
Not quite Todorokis but still related to them, in chap 301 the Himura family head who’s likely Rei’s father, called Enji ‘Endeavor-sama’ (エンデヴァー様) and ‘Top Hero-Sama’ (トップヒーロー様) instead than using his civilian name.
'-sama' (様/さま) is much more formal and polite than just '-san', to the point it’s sometimes translated as “lord”/”lady”.
The fact that the Himura family head is using it underlines how high he thinks of Endeavor, for being such an important Hero.
Enji also gets called 'No.2' and then 'No. 1' after he rises to the position. Shōto in chap 31, calls him 'mannen No. 2 no HERO' (万年No.2のヒーロー "eternal No. 2 Hero"). Then after he becomes No.1 Natsuo refers to him as such in chap 192, Shōto does so in chap 247, and Tōya does so in chap 191 and 231. In chap 191 Tōya also called him ‘No. 1 hero-san’ (No.1ヒーローさん), when telling him goodbye and that they’ll have a chance to talk again... though the politeness here is probably an attempt at sarcasm.
In chap 290 Enji himself defined himself ‘kono kuni no Top Hero’ (この国のトップヒーロー “this country Top Hero”).
Also I’m placing it here, though I doubt Rei is referring to his Hero role but to how Shōto managed to positively react to all he went through (differently from the rest of the family so he's kind of like a role model to them)… still in chap 302 Rei says Shōto is the ‘Todoroki-ke no HERO’ (轟のヒーロー “Todoroki’s family Hero”) but the reading given is ‘Uchi no HERO’ (ウチ のヒーロー “our own family’s hero”).
YOU
Polite Japanese speech requires not the use of “you” but the use of a person’s name. However the Todorokis are a family, they talk to each other in an informal way and so they do use also “you” to talk with each other.
Anata (あなた,貴方, 貴男, 貴女 Lit. “precious toward”)
This is the only second person pronoun comparable to English “you”, yet still not used as often in this universal way by native speakers, as it can be considered having a condescending undertone, especially towards superiors. For expressing “you” in formal contexts, using the person’s name with an honorific is more typical (Hawks tends to use 'Endeavor-san' when talking with Enji and switches to 'anata' only when he doesn't want to repeat 'Endeavor-san'.... and while she uses just 'Endeavor' or 'Hawks', when she has to say "you" the Chairman of the Hero Public Safety Committee uses 'anata' as well). More commonly, ‘anata’ may be used when having no information about the addressed person; also often used as “you” in commercials, when not referring to a particular person. Furthermore, commonly used by women to address their husband or lover, in a way roughly equivalent to the English “dear”. Rei uses always ‘anata’ to talk with Enji but, of course, due to their (poor) relation, we never see it as being translated as “dear” in the English manga.
Omae (おまえ/お前/御前 Lit. “polite front”)
This is the “you” everyone in the Todoroki family uses. Of course it comes with a nuance. If used to talk with people outside the family it’s used by men with more frequency and expresses the speaker’s higher status or age, or a very casual relationship among peers. Often used with ‘ore’ it can be very rude if said to elders. Commonly used by men to address their wife or lover, paralleling the female use of ‘anata’. Of course, since the Todorokis are a family, they use it with each other and it’s not meant to be rude (and yes, occasionally Enji used it with Rei though it’s not as recurring as she uses ‘anata’ so it might not have the same nuance)… and since the male Todorokis are rough, tough males who use ‘ore’ they also use it with people that’s outside the family but in this case it’s actually kind of rude (notable how Geten for example uses it with Dabi during their fight).
Anta (あんた/アンタ)
Contraction of ‘anata’ is also generally not used as it’s considered too direct. Can express contempt, anger or familiarity towards a person. Sometimes it can be felt as more rude than ‘omae’ sometimes it’s the opposite. Generally seen as rude or uneducated when used in formal contexts. ‘Anta’ is often used among girls who want to act leading the guy a little bit forcely and scoldishly. There are a bunch of time in which ‘anta’ is used among the Todoroki family members and they’re all when a character is scolding another. We start with Fuyumi who, when scolding Natsuo in chap 187, calls him ‘anta’ (あんた), we continue with Natsuo who, when arguing/scolding Enji in chap 192 and 302 calls him ‘anta’ (あんた) and we finish with Shōto who, when arguing with Enji in chap 351 about who of them has to face Tōya calls him ‘anta’ (アンタ) to tell him he’s the only one who can face All for One. Yes, Shōto uses katakana which generally are used to underline the word, so it's possible it's done to remark how only Enji can do it but also to underline how Shōto, who's angry, is not using his usual ‘TemeE’ (てめエ) with his father but a tamer word. Interesting enough Tōya, or probably I should say in this case Dabi, uses ‘anta’ too, but not with his family member but with Ujiko in chap 350 both to refer just to him and to him and All for One ‘anta-ra’ (あんたら “you” (plural)). Dabi is an ‘omae’ guy who’s generally not polite but calls Ujiko ‘Ujiko-san’, so the fact for him he uses ‘anta’ and not ‘omae’ is probably meant to feel less rude that if he were to use ‘omae’. Another character connected to the Todoroki family who uses ‘anta’ is, as I've already said, Kurumada with Endeavor.
Temē/TemeE (てめえ/てめエ/手前 Lit. “the one in front of my hand”)
'Temē', a reduction of 'temae', is, according to some, the rudest way to say “you” even more rude than ‘Kisama’ (we’ll talk about it in a while) and it’s used when the speaker is very angry. It’s the sort of thing you might translate with “son of a b*tch” or some other insult along the line. Originally used for a humble first person, it’s an ateji, which means either the readings of the individual kanji do not match the reading of the word, or the meanings of the individual kanji do not match the meaning of the word. Shōto uses ‘temeE’ (てめエ) in chap 34 when arguing with Enji (which makes notable how he’ll only use ‘anta’ much later on when arguing with him in chap 351) and again uses ‘temeE’ (てめエ) in chap 292 when fighting with Tōya and Tōya also uses ‘temeE’ (てめエ) in chap 351 when fighting with Shōto (in their previous fight he used ‘omae’ with him). The fact that the last ‘e’ is written in katakana instead than hiragana is often done to put emphasis on it.
For completeness sake I’ll report two other ways to say ‘you’ which some of the Todorokis use but not, as far as we know, with their family members.
Kimi (君/きみ Lit. “lord” (archaic))
It’s the kanji also used to write '-kun'. Informal to subordinates; can also be affectionate; formerly very polite. Among peers typically used with ‘boku’ (僕) (so, as you can easily guess it’s Midoriya’s “you” when he’s not using someone’s name). Often seen as rude or assuming when used with superiors, elders or strangers. Enji uses it when talking with Midoriya at the sport festival and when he observes how Midoriya too was one of them because he should have suffered for his Quirk, showing him some degree of politeness… but he will eventually switch on using ‘omae’ for him during the Dark Hero arc, which likely his meant to imply they gotten more familiar, not that he's being disrespectful.
Kisama (貴様/きさま Lit. "precious lord")
Historically very formal, but has developed in an ironic sense to show the speaker’s extreme hostility/outrage towards the addressee. It’s basically so rude/aggressive it often gets translated into “bastard/you bastard”. Enji uses it when talking with All Might, sometimes outright saying ‘kisama’, sometimes the furigana say ‘All Might’ but the kanji below say ‘kisama’ just to drive home the way Enji is saying ‘All Might’ is all but polite and all this is very rude as All Might isn’t just ranked above him but he’s older than him and a Hero by longer time so he definitely deserves more respect. Enji also calls ‘kisama-ra’ (it’s a plural form of ‘kisama’) Midoriya and Bakugō when they intern under him. This is actually interesting. He starts with ‘omae-tachi’ (it’s a plural form of ‘omae’) when he says he’ll supervise them, then switches to ‘kisama-ra’ when he tells Bakugō and Midoriya to tell him about themselves, then he moves to ‘kimi’ when he says since Midoriya too suffered for his Quirk he’s one of them… to go back to ‘kisama’ when he address Bakugō only… to switch again to ‘omae-tachi’ when he’s addressing the three of them… to go back to ‘kisama-ra’ when he tells them they’ve to gain experience working under him and uses ‘kisama-ra’ again when he tells Bakugō and Shōto he’ll give them the same assignment and also uses it to tell the three of them won’t impact on his work. Long story short, very likely that ‘kisama’ is solely meant to remark how they’re working under him. He also uses ‘kisama’ when he begins interacting with Hawks (who instead, as said before, uses 'Endeavor–san' and when he has to use “you” with him goes for ‘anata’ despite Hawks being an ‘ore’ guy), only to switch to ‘omae’ later on.

Here's my unpopular opinion nobody asked for but I think about a lot: I don't see Goku and Chichi as a heavily romantic couple and I don't think that's a bad thing. (And my opinion doesn't have to be your thing, either! Ship how you want, follow your bliss) I am once again referring to the manga.
This is not me saying their love isn't valid or their relationship isn't real! Quite the opposite! It's me saying I do not think of their relationship as having a typical dynamic, and I'm charmed by that idea.
Disclaimer: As an aroaspec myself, I'm biased! And I also know plenty of queer people who don't have or want prototypical relationships. This isn't an essay to disprove anybody, it's just me thinking about ship dynamics out loud and why I think of them that way.
Anyway, if that's something that interests you, I've rambled about it under the cut
I've always read Chichi as fairly conservative (not in the US politics way, the normal meaning = (of dress or taste) sober and traditional) and extremely shy and naïve in matters of the heart and body. Goku (in the manga, at least) historically has no interest in sex or romance to the point that he doesn't register a difference between sexes and genders throughout Dragon Ball, while everyone around him is thirsty as hell.
I know it's a hot button issue that Goku claims to not kiss his wife/thinks kissing is Gross, but it's not really out of character for him (in the manga) -- especially if you add the lore that it's very very rare for a Saiyan to be affectionate. imo that gag of Goku thinking it's weird and Vegeta being embarrassed by thinking it's normal is great if you consider that Goku is only being weird by Earth standards. But between two full-blooded Planet Vegeta-born Saiyans, Vegeta "I Kiss My Wife Regularly" The Fourth is the weirdo in that conversation.
(There's also something to be said for the very steady, overarching plot that Goku and Vegeta are heading opposite directions in their growth; Vegeta (Saiyankind's #1 Guy) being increasingly happy and content with his life on Earth and Goku (Earth's #1 Guy) being increasingly restless on Earth and wanting to fight and explore like a traditional saiyan would -- but that's a different essay)
I'm getting off track bUT MY POINT HERE is that it's very reasonable to think that Chichi and Goku, two socially isolated and extremely innocent-minded people, don't have an overtly sexual or sensual relationship. Chichi's prone to upholding temperance and romanticizing ideas, and Goku likes sleeping piles but doesn't like being physically clung to or stifled, so it makes sense to me that they might have a more subdued bond.
It also makes sense to me that kissing on the mouth may just not be Goku's cup of tea (maybe he tried it and didn't like it! He's not alone! Plenty of people don't like the physical sensation of kissing. Doesn't mean they're immature or dumb, it's just not something they like).
If you consider that almost half of married women in Japan "aren't interested" in having sex (due to reasons like fatigue, childbirth/pregnancy risks and issues, and it being 'too much hassle'), and Goku being the way Goku is anyway, it makes sense to me that Goku and Chichi are more of a snuggle up couple than a kiss kiss bang bang couple.
Toriyama was also very vocally self-conscious about writing romance, and I think that reflects very highly in Goku's personality and disinterest. He is noted as saying (to a lot of upset fans, I remember when the interview came out) that Goku sees his family more like friends -- which, again, I really don't see as an issue, knowing Goku and who Goku's always been (in the manga). He's not stupid, he understands his wife is his wife, and his children are children he fathered, but Goku's never been one for traditional roles, and I don't know why so many people were shocked to learn that also applies to his family life (actually I do, it's because Toei bends over backwards to write Goku like a family man when he absolutely isn't, but that is also a separate essay, in which I will complain so much about how they try to dump all of Goku's flaws on Vegeta, who enjoys being a family man so much it gave him a massive identity crisis. There was a whole plot about it, Toei. You were there).
But also: Goku loves his friends, they're the reasons he fights as hard as he does. He's never understood or subscribed to social hierarchies, and I don't think it's shocking to know that extends to his own circle. Plus, the first blood relative he ever met kidnapped his kid, threatened his planet, and then tried to murder him. Goku's family has always lived in his friendships. I don't think it's insulting to say Goku views his wife and kids that way. It's the highest form of love someone can give, in his experience.
It would also really highlight again that he and Vegeta are foils, as it's generally implied (if not by Toriyama himself) that Vegeta and Bulma are a much more sexual/sensual couple -- potentially due to Bulma's long history of embracing herself as a Modern Woman, and Vegeta being raised in an advanced society. They also do not have that same lack of hierarchy, or feelings about friendship, that Goku does. Both of them are isolated in that they don't particularly like Other People, so they have a strong preference for each others' company. It's not a More or Less Valid dynamic, it's just a different dynamic.
ANYWAY! All this to say that, a lot of people feel that Goku not being particularly romantic/physical/sensual is a bad thing or a weird left-field take from Toriyama, but it's not if you've
Read the manga and
Had experience with AroAce/A-Spec people
Had experience with conservative/traditional people
It's really not that weird to assume Goku and Chichi really aren't very sexual/sensual as a couple, imo. They both have a sort of charming naïvety about modern society, they both have a preference for views that run along more innocent routes, and they both seem more interested in play than anything else (Goku with his sense of battle, and Chichi, an extremely talented martial artist herself, seems super fond of playing house as a wife and mother in the way she imagines it has to be -- despite her not having that experience growing up).
They're both, in their own way, indulging in their own fantasies of what life is like, because neither of them really notice or care about what the rest of the world is doing. And they're happy! Chichi's only unhappy when Goku's shenanigans rope Gohan into danger, or when he's been gone too long and the money is drying up, which seems to me like more of her playing house (The Husband Earns the Money, You See (even though her father also did not have a job and just hoarded treasure, and Bulma is living proof that women can be breadwinners)).
tldr: IMO Goku is par the course for a Saiyan, and Chichi's playing house with him. She's held onto an extremely romantic notion about him since she was like, 10 years old, after all, and she's still doki doki real bad for him 30+ years later. I've always imagined their relationship maintains a kind of sweet child-like innocence to it 99% of the time, and sex is a very rare occasion in that very small house.
Plus, low-libido people exist! It's okay to headcanon characters with kids as low-libido. It doesn't have to be a 'marriage is terrible' joke, or an 'i don't love my wife/husband' joke. It can just be a "We're a 'cuddle on the couch after a long day' couple" vibe. That's how I always imagine Goku and Chichi's dynamic and it's super cute to me idk.
They just remind me of kids playing two completely different games on the playground, together, and then holding hands on their way back to class. Couple of little weirdos. I like them a lot.
#i don't think this is discourse i hope it's not discourse#it's just one thems opinion on an mf couple with queer overtones askljdalj#dbtag#this is a post full of love i promise#if it's not for you that's okay this is just me talking about things i like

jj ramble!!
^ tags from @cygnusswan
favorite character:
UWAH I LOVE THEM ALL... even the side characters (except chui and his posse they kinda freak me out tbh)... my favorite love interest is probably fumi because i played his route first or shirota because i relate to him the most ✌️ but they're all nice, and i also want to shout out kisa because i was worried that she'd be a super blank slate with no personality, but she had so much depth and i love her immensely, she's definitely a completely fleshed out character and she's strong in her own right, so i'm really excited to play her route too! to me, her struggle with her gender and her identity is so real. like, even though she's a cis girl, the way she's written feels so??? i dunno. it's relatable to me.
favorite performance:
I'M SOO OBSESSED WITH MARY JANE... sneak peek of my phone background ⬇️
BUT.... the one i keep coming back to is oh rama havenna????? THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD... chichi and rukirora are so important to me okay.... AND THE CUTSCENES WERE SO GOOD IN THAT ONE??? god... when kisa started crying at the end i also started ugly crying. also shout out neji's massive fake honkers in the confessional mv. why were they so big. how did that work. i got scared. his strappless dress was crazy. especially since he was the main focus. (pictured below: two havenna scenes that had me in tears)
and cessia (shishia??? I DON'T REMEMBER HOW IT'S SPELLED) was also good. but i wanna see all the versions before i form a final opinion on it 😭😭😭.... i still think i'm going to like adra as the love interest the best. it feels right to me... ajdnndnd I SOBBED BTW...
BUT ALL OF THE SONG AND DANCE NUMBERS ARE SO GOOD FROM EVERY SHOW... they're all in my driving playlist ✌️ even ms. robin. which is literally such a goofy song to me.
routes:
i did fumi's first (drew a commemorative something here) and i'm playing mitsu's now ✌️✌️ I REALLY LOVE FUMI'S ROUTE THOUGH... the way he definitely fell first and pretty much immediately (i think he has a thing for tachibanas idk man ajsjsns) AND he knew all along that kisa was a girl but protected her identity all year without her even having to ask. AND!! AND!! as soon as kisa told him, he went to calling her a beautiful girl and using feminine terms to describe her... it was so reassuring(???) because he obviously cared about her identity and knew she was uncomfortable with the thought of being outed but also knew that she still identified as a girl despite having to put up a front, so using her proper gender and stuff even in private meant a lot yk??? after a year of hiding your gender identity a really pretty guy asking you to be his girlfriend seems like a w to me. obsessed with how he was confessing since his first weekend event ajdjdjd,,,
surprises/wishes:
WAS NOT EXPECTING THE BEACH EPISODE BUT I DID WELCOME IT WITH OPEN ARMS... all of their swimsuits were so goofy... I LIKE THAT KISA'S OUTFIT CHANGES SLIGHTLY IN THE CUTSCENES??? also. big fan of whatever the rhondonite first years were doing. they slayed.
I ALSO DID NOT EXPECT THE SAUNA... and why was it like. pee yellow... HELLO.. 💀💀
WISHING FOR A DLC WHERE I CAN GET WITH KASAI OR KIITO.... please please... head in my hands.... they're so silly... also would never happen realistically but poly suzu/sou/kisa when....
I GOT THE GAME LIKE TWO WEEKS AGO MAYBE and i have not stopped thinking about it.... i don't think i will check the hours i'll get scared. i'm not an otome girlie though, so i did not expect to like it for that. i got it because i'm a musical theatre kid, certified thespian, and awful bad rhythm gamer it appealled to me... i was actually very skeptical about the "girl at an all boys school" concept but it was really well excecuted imo ajdndn,,, i'm glad that there's varying amounts of romance in the different routes. i've triggered different cutscenes for suzu, mitsuki, and fumi and so i appreciate that it doesn't all feel like forced romance?? i dunno how to describe it.. anyways!! 10/10 i think there is something for everyone here ✌️ (silly guys and gender shenanigans)

'Very demure' trend helps TikToker pay for her transition

'Very demure' trend helps TikToker pay for her transition
US beauty influencer Jools Lebron has been in everyone’s heads for weeks and she’s made so much from a viral TikTok trend that she can now afford to pay for her gender transition.
TikTok star Jools Lebron, who is a trans woman, has been inescapable on TikTok for the past few weeks. Jools Lebron – and according to Out, other trans influencers like Selyna Brillare and Devin Halbal – have been making addictive videos on TikTok giving people real-life tips about “how to be demure”.
Her parody videos in which she explains what it means to be demure have been viewed millions of times.
Jools explains how to be “very demure” and “very mindful” in situations like work, job interviews, boarding a plane, checking into a hotel and more.
The most popular video and the one that appears to have started it all is Jool’s video explaining what is and isn’t demure in the workplace.
“You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure. Very mindful,” Jools explains.
“I don’t come to work with a green-cut crease. I don’t look like a clown when I go to work, I don’t do too much.
“I’m very mindful while I’m at work. You see how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job.
“A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma. Not demure.
“I’m very modest. I’m very mindful. You see my shirt? Only a little chichi out, not my chocho.
“Be mindful of why they hired you. Here’s your reality check, diva. What’s the name you’d like me to make it out to?”

TikTok has changed her life
Jools’ advice, voice and cadence has been trapped in millions of people’s heads for weeks.
Earlier this week she posted a candid update that after more than 100 million views “TikTok has changed my life.”
“Hey pendeja, maybe you should make the videos. Maybe you should make the videos,” Jools said.
“Because one day, I was playing cashier and making videos on my break, and now, I’m flying cross country to host events.
“I’m going to be able to finance the rest of my transition. I finally said it without crying!”
Very demure, very mindful.

just putting down some thoughts for my db s/i, mozzarella (i don't really feel comfortable posting any artwork yet, so i figured i would try to put it in words first !!)
head's up, this is a really long post!
tw // brief mention of sex
backstory ig idk lol:
i don't really have much in the lines of backstory (this is mostly because i haven't finished DB Super yet and i'm not that knowledgeable of how DB's world works lol). but i do like the idea of mozzarella just being a homebody that has a garden and makes a living by selling their fruits n veggies. they met goku at a farmer's market and really hit it off from there !! it was love at first sight with goku ^-^ they are also a shapeshifter and just kind of. exist ! (i looked up shapeshifting on the db wiki and apparently there was a shapeshifting school ? i might incorporate that when i do my full db watch !) one idea that i have is that mozzarella had a previous form but eventually chose to stay permanently in their rat form. it's the form that makes them most comfortable. it took them a while to get used to their current form, but after a while, it became their default form. they aren't opposed to taking other forms for fun ! there is no limits to their shapeshifting ability, but bigger and more complex forms can be very exhausting. still, their shapeshifting isn't 100 perfect either; sometimes, if they aren't focused (which is often), the form they take will sometimes have large rat ears, a long rat tail, or huge whiskers ! typically, mozz will only shapeshift certain parts of their body for convenience's sake. for example, they'll transform their arms into huge bat wings in order to fly around quickly. this doesn't take up more energy to do.
design:
i don't think there's any design variations from my actual sona. mozz will still be relatively average height (shorter than goku but taller than vegeta). they might be a little bit furrier and have a longer tail, but that's about it. oh, and they'll probably fit more into the style of DB/DBZ.
personality:
personality wise will be very consistent with my sona (and myself too). ditzy and easily confused but kind-hearted. does their best to be a good person but worries excessively about how people perceive them. a little weirdo for sure lmfao. the only interesting thing i might have to think about is the idea that saiyans are wired to be attracted to "strong" partners (vegeta said 'women' specifically but i'm just gonna say that gender doesn't matter here shhhhh). i don't know if mozzarella is particularly "strong" or "hot-headed" in the same why bulma and chichi and videl is (or, in videl's case, used to be). i'm leaning towards "no, they aren't;" they're probably pretty passive and typically go with the flow. still, they can be incredibly snarky at times and can come off as a bit of a know-it-all (intentionally or not). i think there is an inner strength there but it doesn't manifest in the same way that it does for the main DB girlies. still, mozzarella will throw hands if needed and does not take shit from anyone LMFAO. bascially "i'm not a fighter but don't test me." even if goku is the strongest in the universe, mozz will be more than ready to beat a mf up to defend him (they fucking HATEEE it when people disrespect goku, it's like their no. 1 pet peeve. they'd probably start crying but will still beat a mf up if needed.)
changes to the canon:
this is gonna be difficult to touch on because i haven't really figured it out in my head yet. the main difficulty is gonna stem from chichi. i love chichi to pieces (all chichi haters will die by my blade), so i don't want her to like. not exist LOL. i also don't want them to have gotten a divorce around the time that goku and mozzarella meet. my solution is that chichi and goku just never got together. basically, the "promise" that goku made to chichi was that they would meet again in the future (not that he would marry her) and that promise was fulfilled when they fought at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. they're just good friends and sparring partners. ofc, there's the question of gohan and goten existing, and i want them to exist !! an idea that i have is that goku and chichi slept together a few times in the past and thus, gohan and goten. i haven't decided why yet (failed relationship that ended amicably ? maybe chichi or goku or both wanted kids and they trusted each other enough to want to have children with each other ? they were just fooling around ?), but regardless, gohan and goten DO exist, and all of the events in DB and DBZ/Kai did happen as they normally would, just less gochi (i still <3 gochi tho). oh, and i imagine goku just has his own separate place and doesn't live with chichi. goten lives with her (gohan is grown and already left), and goku lives nearby so he can help out whenever he can. (mozz thinks he's a really good dad ^o^)
mozzarella's inclusion in the canon:
so my idea is that mozzarella and goku met sometimes during Super. the idea is that goku is a farmer (i think this concept was introduced in super) and uses the money for himself and for chichi and goten (both he and chichi work). considering both he and mozz sell their crops at the farmer's market, my idea is that they met here. basically, mozz was not involved in any of the crazy shit goku got up to prior to Super. after meeting, mozz was quickly introduced to goku's main circle of friends and was quickly swept up into all of the craziness goku got himself into. this includes meeting beerus and whis, golden freiza, universe 6, etc. also, bulma quickly ran mozz up to speed on everything that has ever happened to them pre-Super, so while they were pretty skeptical at first, they quickly believed her (mostly due to bulma's birthday party fiasco).
i'll stop this post here since it's getting pretty long, but the reblog is gonna focus on mozz's relationships with everyone else, including goku !!
#rat thinks#self insert#this was much longer than i intended#but i had so much fun writing this all out#i haven't made an “oc” in eons#so it felt really good to sort of make one#playing with my dollies

Marriage. 113
Chapter 113: Granddaughter Pan
I can’t believe this! I’m just so excited. When we got home, I just couldn’t put Videl down. She’s pregnant! We’re going to be parents! Why couldn’t I tell? Was I so into work that I missed the signs? Before the cell games, and mom was pregnant, dad knew right away. But than dad already knew how mom body was. Since this is Videl, how come I couldn’t tell? Then again, she didn’t show signs like mom. She didn’t eat more. Her ki wasn’t all over the place.
When we got home, I couldn’t stop touching her. we ended on the couch, with her sitting on my lap as I felt just below her bellybutton. I wanted to feel the ki of our growing child. It was faint, but it felt wonderful. I asked her when she found out she was excepting. “Last week. I had unbelievable back headache. So, I went to the doctor, to see what was the cause. While there, did some test, everything but one came back clean.” She then placed her hand over mine. “You could guess which test came back with different results.” We both smiled.
As the days goes by, I did try to make sure I left work right away. I even took some of it actually home, so I could finish there. I made sure the Videl barely put pressure on herself. Remembering how mom was, when pregnant with Goten still played in my head. Mom was doing everything, and didn’t accept help. I didn’t make it easier on her either. Videl is not going through that. I’ll make it my soul duty that she’ll have a stress-free pregnancy. Even though insist she’s perfectly fine, I still made her sit while I did everything around the house. She’s not allowed to do anything while I’m home. I’ll cook, clean, press my own clothes, and make sure she’s ok. I even stopped wearing weighted clothes, and having weights in my bag. I didn’t want to hurt her by mistake.
Every night, I would even feel the little one’s ki, and it makes me so happy. My Videl is perfect. Our growing child is perfect. After about 3 or so months her belly was starting to show. It was such a wonderful sight to wake up to, and go to sleep to. I would hold my Videl super close as I admire both her, and our child. I also came to notice a few other things along the way. For example, how more irresistible Videl had become. Every day I had to fight the urge to keep her in bed with me. Now that was a fun side effect, that I don’t mind. Especially Videl loves the way I wake her up in the morning. An early breakfast is always good on my watch. Since she’s pregnant I also took it upon myself to do all the work in the bedroom, too.
Then came the wonderful day that Videl went in for her ultrasound, and we found out the gender of our baby. It’s going to be a girl. That got me excited. We’re going to have a little Videl. When we came home from the ultrasound, we were surprised that mom and dad was waiting for us. How did they? Videl must have told them about today. I was so worried about her I completely forget to inform my own parents. I was surprised that her dad wasn’t here. He usually always comes to visits on Saturdays.
As I watched mom and Videl gush over the ultrasound pictures, I couldn’t stop feeling a strong sense of joy. When I looked over at dad, he had a huge smile as he too watched mom and Videl. Then Videl surprised us both when she asked dad to feel her belly. Dad face turned red, and stutter if she was sure. He was very hesitant at first. When he finally did touch her, there was a shrine to his eyes, as he smile. “She’s perfect.” This was a nice moment. When Videl moved away, to sit back down, dad look like he was fighting a frown. With the same hand he touch Videl, he ruffled my hair. He wasn’t looking at me, but he sure had a huge smile. When mom and dad were leaving, mom had to struggle with dad. Dad didn’t want to leave yet. It was funny to watch.
…
Since that whole fight with Beerus, Chichi went back to the no training rule, and Goten should only focus on studying. I get that she got scared, but I feel that might be a little too much. It took some time to finally calm her down about it. Also, I wasn’t allowed off planet again. That’s ok. There’s actually a few things I’m looking forward to, that I don’t want to miss out. For a good two months, Chichi watched me work, or joined, depending on her mood. She was just making sure I didn’t sneak in any training. That’s fine, since I get to spend time with her. When she wasn’t with me at the field, she was visiting Gohan. Even though, I’m supposedly working, I keep track of her ki. Then when she’s with our son, and an excepting Videl, I like to sense all their kis. Even the small, faint one that’s growing. That always puts a smile on my face. Our son is going to be a father of his own.
Then one day, Chichi gets a call, saying that Videl was going to get her ultrasound thingy today. Goten was in school, and since I was on break, I went with her. Not like I don’t visit our son, just that she does it more. Especially since she wants me to work the fields. When we got there, Gohan and Videl still wasn’t home. Chichi was bouncing with excitement, and I couldn’t help smile at that. If I remember correctly those ultrasound thingies tell you more about the growing baby. When the couple did should up, they had super big smiles.
So, it’s a girl. I’m going to have a granddaughter. Wow. I don’t know what I’m more excited about. The fact that Gohan is having a daughter, or the fact I’m going to be a grandpa to a girl. I can’t stop smiling at how wonderful this all is. My first son grew up, got married, and now is going to be a daddy to a little girl. I can’t stop feeling proud of him. He doing so well for himself. He’s following his dreams, and even starting a family.
Videl then surprises me, by saying I could feel the baby. I don’t know what to do. I’m just shock that I even get to do so. When I do touch her belly, and sense the little girl’s ki, it’s like a magical moment. It’s almost liked a spark of a lot of little things at once. It’s almost like how Gohan was, when I first sense him. Yet this one is different. It’s like a rainbow of different energy. “She’s perfect.” I even got to feel a faint kick. Awe. The moment Videl backed away, so she can sit back down, I was fighting a frown. That little girl as already claim her grandpa. I wanted to continue feeling her ki, but it’s not my place. My Gohan did a good job. I couldn’t help ruffle his hair.
I didn’t want to leave yet. I wanted to stay close as possible. Just a few more minutes. It took everything for Chichi to get me to walk out the door. On the way home I couldn’t stop looking at my hand. When we finally get home, we see Goten trying to find something to eat. Were we really gone for that long? Chichi tells him to calm down, and that she’ll start dinner. While she does that, I end up playing with Goten. Goten. I started remembering when I found out that Chichi was pregnant with him.
…
We weren’t training today, and Gohan left to go see Krillin. It was just me and Chichi, and that was perfect. She just finished hanging the laundry, when I hugged her from behind. When I did so she started giggling, but I also noticed something different. I took a deep whiff of her neck, and I caught the scent of it. Could this really be happening? I held Chichi tighter, and focused on her ki, trying to sense if there were anything different. There was. It was faint, but it was there. I took another whiff of her, and I definitely could smell it. That one scent I only smelled once, and that was almost 10 years ago. The same scent she had when… when… She was PREGNANT!
Both fear and joy washed over me. But then I remembered last year. She had the same scent, and I waited 2 weeks, but nothing changed. The scent actually went away. Not this time. If she wasn’t pregnant now, she’s going to be when I’m done with her. I picked her up, and carried her to our room. Which caught her by complete surprised. We put our lives on hold for far too long. She’s not the only one who wants another baby.
Every night, for two weeks, I poured my heart and soul into my Chichi. At first, she was more worried about waking Gohan. But after a while those thoughts left as I made her feel good. Plus, to my great delight, she was pregnant. I was both happy and worried. Maybe I was being a little selfish, but I really wanted to give my wife another baby. But I wanted to surprise her, with the news, after the fighting was over. At night, while I held her, I enjoyed feeling that new growing ki. We’re going to have another child. After that day, was when I felt that strange energy. That’s when the panic started to sink in. Did I make a mistake?
…
As we ate dinner, I couldn’t stop looking between Goten and Chichi. They both asked what was wrong, which I reply nothing. After dinner, I did my usual before bed workout, while Goten read on my back. Even after I finished, and it was time for bed, I didn’t want to let Goten out of my grasp yet. I’ll have moments like these, and he would want to get out of my hugs. Not that he doesn’t like spending time with me. It’s just when I really don’t want to let him go, that he starts asking me to let him go. “Don’t worry dad. I love you.” That put a smile to my face, as I watched him give Chichi a good night hug.
When me and Chichi got to bed, I couldn’t help myself, and place a hand over her stomach. I even did a sad sigh. “Goku.” I looked up at Chichi’s worried face. “Is something wrong?” I tell her it’s nothing, and give her a quick kiss. “Goku, tell me the truth.”
I felt trouble how was I supposed to tell her. I pulled her closer, and rest my head in her neck. “I missed it. I missed out on so much. And.” I held her tighter, while one of my hands was still on her belly. I felt the words trapped in my throat, but I tried to say them. “We’re not able to have. More.” She placed a hand over mines, and she said sorry. “It’s not your fault. Two enough. I just wish I was there during the whole thing. Able to feel him grow in you. The whole experience of watching him grow. I missed out on so much.” By now Chichi was hugging me, and I was fighting back my own tears. “Damn Cell. Damn that heart virus. All I wanted was to make sure you three were happy. Even when it meant…” I started kissing her.
I can’t continue thinking about things that can’t change. I have to stop thinking about something I have to find peace with. My Chichi was safe for those 7 years. She had our wonderful boys by her side. She wasn’t alone. “Goku?” I looked at her, and she had tears. Oh no. Did I do something wrong? “That was the first time in years since I’ve seen you fight in person.” Uh? That’s when I thought about it. Last time she was actually near one of my battles was years ago. It was the same day I had officially purposed to her. “This one was also scary, but.” When I looked at her, her frown was replaced with a smile. “It was also exciting to see you fight. I almost forgot how you look when you really fight.”
“Uh? What do you mean?”
“Goku, we spar. But we don’t fight. I’ve only seen glimpse of your other fights on earth. But when I first saw you fight in the tournament, there was just something about you. You were silly, but there was something completely different. Like you zoned out, and all you breathe was pure confidence in your movements. It was exciting to see that. My husband to be went from fun and silly, to someone you don’t want to get in the way of. That whole tournament I saw so many sides of you, that it made me wonder what else was there to find out.” She had the biggest smile when she said that. “Regardless how scared I was, seeing you fight made me fall even more in love with you.”
“Chichi.” I couldn’t stop kissing her. She’s so perfect. “If I get into another fight, would you like to watch?” She looked surprised by that. She then smiles and said yes. “But promise me. You’ll stay out the way, and leave if things really get bad. I know you can take care of yourself, but I don’t want you hurt either.” I promise. I just hope it’s not a big fight, and you’ll be doing it for fun. “I hope so too. Because if it’s a big fight, you’re staying home. Understand.” She nods, and we finally fall asleep.
…
As the days leading up to Videl’s due date, I kept visiting them. Sometimes Hercule would be there. Sometimes Goten would tag along. And the days Goku came it was a hassle to get him to leave. Gohan even jokes how it was also a hassle for Videl to get Hercule leave. Guess the grandpas to be just couldn’t wait till their granddaughter came. But then one day, Gohan called me in a panic. As much as I tried to calm him down, he just wouldn’t. It turns out that Videl’s water broke, and they were in the hospital. Goku was home, and when he over heard that, he made me hang the phone. He picked me up and transmission over to Gohan in seconds. Now we’re face with a panic Gohan, and Goku is also now panicking, trying to calm a panic Gohan. “They won’t even let me be in the room with her!”
When Gohan said that, Goku looked angry. For the first time ever, I saw Goku arguing with a nurse. He was practically demanding her that his son was taken to his wife. He actually scared the poor woman, and she obeyed him, out of fear. Once the two were out of sight, did Goku finally sit next to me. He even held my hand. I kept hearing him mumble how Gohan had every right to be in there with Videl. My poor, wonderful Goku. I held his hand tighter. He still didn’t look anywhere near calm. Before long Hercule had arrived, and when he saw Goku, he backed away. He then asked if everything was ok. “Yeah. Gohan is with Videl.” When he said that he finally showed signs of calming down. That’s when Hercule finally sat down, next to Goku.
Hours felt like days. And both grandpas looks ready to start a fight. Then, when I nurse walked up to us, the same one that Goku scared, she had a huge smile as she told us to follow her. As we followed, I didn’t know who was excited more between the three of us. The one holding a bag of I don’t know what, maybe toys. The one holding his fist to his chest, thinking it’ll calm his racing heart. Or me, the one almost bouncing as we got closer. But the moment the nurse opened the door, time just froze for everyone. It was the most beautiful sight. Seeing our Gohan hugging Videl, while she held to a little baby.
When they finally looked up at us, they had the proudest smiles. When we were over with them, I couldn’t help admire the cute little girl. It just took my birth away. “What name did you give her?” Was Goku stuttering? So cute.
The proud parents looked at us and said. “Pan.” Pan. Such a cute name. “Do you want to hold her?” Me and Hercule said yes at the same time. Goku was just smiling. When Hercule tried to get a hold of Pan, one look from me made him back away. She hasn’t been in this world for more than an few minutes, and she’s already making her grandparents fight over her. As I hold the small little bundle, I can’t help to admire how cute she is. Me and Goku poked her cute chubby cheeks, and she smiled. It just melted my heart. She’s so adorable. All this time she still haven’t opened her eyes. I wonder why.
I soon gave Goku a chance to carry our new granddaughter, and he looked so natural doing so. As he held her, he had such a sweet smile. Before long, it was Hercule’s turn. The loud mouth did know when to be quiet. It was cute to watch. Then when Pan was back in the hands of her parents, is when she finally opened her eyes. At that moment you could she’s was going to be such a daddy’s girl.
It was such a cute moment. That’s when it hits me. I forgot the camera. That made me so sad. It would have been nice to capture this moment. That’s when I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I looked to Goku, he held the family camera. This is so perfect. I made sure to take a lot of pictures of the happy new parents. I even got a nurse to take a picture of all of us. When the nurse left, is when Goku started to laugh. I wonder what was so funny. When I followed where he was looking at, I saw just outside the window was Piccolo. “I think uncle Piccolo wants to meet Pan, too.” Gohan looked surprised for a moment, before he realized what Goku said. So silly.
I still find it funny how Piccolo went from my worse nightmare, to being thankful he saved my son, to being part of the family. It actually felt nice. Pan is going to love uncle Piccolo just like the rest of the kids. Now I’m starting to feel bad for the guy. Watching him hold Pan was a real treat. And the fact that he stood for a picture was just perfect. Can’t wait till Goten gets out of school, and come meet his new niece.
…
I have a niece. She’s so cute, and small. When I got to hold her, she was smiling at me. I want to keep her. She’s so cute and perfect. I don’t ever want to let go. She’s mine. And since she’s a sayian that means she’ll be able to play with me and Trunks when she gets a little older. We’re going to have so much fun. I’m going to be the best uncle ever. She has my big brother as her daddy, so she’ll always be safe. She also has my daddy as her grandpa, so she’s going to be super safe. She also has me, and I’ll never let anything bad happen to her. She also has mommy, Videl, and uncle Piccolo. She’s super protected with all of us. No bad guy will ever be able to hurt her. Best part, she’s going to be spoiled. Just look at her cute face. Who could ever say no to it?
When it’s time to go, I don’t want to let go. There’s a new baby in the family, and I don’t want to leave yet. I want to stay with her. Why do I have to go to stupid school? Why can’t I spend the night? Mom says that Videl and Gohan needs to rest, and so does Pan. Don’t worry Pan. Your uncle Goten will come visit every chance he gets. I give her one more hug, before I give her back to Videl. My niece Pan is a little cutie.
I’m so lucky. My family keeps growing. I have a mom and dad, a big brother. Big brother got married, which then gave me a big sister. Then they had a baby, and I became an uncle. I also have my uncles Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, and Yamcha. And I got my aunties Bulma, and 18. My best friends Trunks and Marron are like my cousins. I have a big family.
But there is one thing I do find sad. Trunks has a real uncle, who’s still alive. Daddy’s real brother is dead, and was a meanie. Sometimes I wonder, but then I stop. I can’t be greedy. I finally got my dad. There’s nothing more I need. With that, on the ride home, I just watch dad. When we get home, I can’t help but stay close. I even ask if I could sleep in their room tonight. Which makes me happy that they said yes.
Gohan a daddy now. And I got our daddy all to myself. Funny how little changes reminds me how grateful I should be. The rest of the night I’m snuggling dad. This feeling is so wonderful.
…
The moment we got to the hospital, the nurse and doctors wouldn’t let me stay with my wife. Why can’t I be with her, as she gives birth to our daughter? I’m reminded of the time when mom was giving birth to Goten. I’m scared. I’m panicking. In my panic I call mom. When she shows up seconds later with dad, I feel a little better. Dad is trying to calm me down. I tell him how they won’t let me be with Videl. He gets angry, and for the first time I see him do something I only seen Vegeta and Bulma do. He’s demanding the nurse to take me to Videl. Dad had even gone super sayian in his moment of rage. Mom told me how dad wasn’t allowed with her, when she was giving birth to me. Mom told me how much dad regrets not fighting to be by her side. Mom told me how she almost died giving birth to me. What is Videl? NO! I don’t want to lose her! Thankfully the scared nurse takes me to Videl.
I hold onto Videl’s hand, as the doctor encourages her to push. It feels like forever seeing my Videl go through the pain. I’m so worried, but I try to be brave for her. Then when she gives one more push, everything goes quiet. The only sound I hear is a baby’s cries. Then the world around me continues again. I watch the nurse and doctors clean, weigh, measure, and then wrap my baby daughter in a pink blanket. It was so amazing to watch. The moment she was in Videl’s hands, she stopped crying. My little girl already knows her mommy. I couldn’t help smile at that. Seeing her I felt a strong sense of pride.
Then doctors ask us what name are we going to give her. What name are we going to give her? “Pan.” When Videl said that my heart just melted. That sounded like a lovely name for our little girl. Pan even smiled at that. Pan is so perfect. The staff leaves, and gave us a moment. I just hug my little family. I feel on top of the world right now. My perfect wife, and our perfect little Pan.
The moments our parents came in, I felt my chest swell with pride. It was funny to see mom and my father-in-law fight over who gets to hold Pan first. Not even an hour old and she already got her grandparents fighting for her. Seeing my parents’ bond with my Pan feels so special. And when dad got to hold Pan, I felt a tug at my heart. Dad looks so happy. If he were alive when Goten was born, he’ll probably have the same smile he has for Pan. Or maybe different. Either way. Seeing the way dad looked at Pan, as he held her, made me happy.
After Hercule had his turn, and hands Pan back to us, is when Pan finally open her eyes. When she does, I’m the first thing she sees. When our eyes meet the world around me just disappears. At that moment I felt like my heart was whole. I felt like everything was right with the world. I would do anything for my little Pan.
The rest of the day was really eventful. Watching Mr. Piccolo hold Pan was cute. Goten didn’t want to let her go. Pan has a family that loves her very much. Especially, that she capture them all with her cuteness. It was a struggle to get our baby back. Goten wasn’t the only one who didn’t want to let Pan go. Before my parents, and Goten, left they gave us one more hug. Dad even poke Pan’s cheeks one more time. Pan had a big smile when he did that. Pan really did capture everyone’s heart today.

No, Re-Destro Is Not Destro’s Literal Son
and
Yes, I Will Die On This Hill
I have a number of small, persistent quibbles with some of the widespread misapprehensions I see included in BNHA fanfic, quoted as fact in meta posts, even cited on the wiki. Quirk cancellation restraints, what the 20% quirklessness data point means in practice, when Kurogiri comes into existence relative to the time of the Shimura Family Massacre, things like that. My biggest one, though, is as the title suggests: the idea that Yotsubashi Rikiya is Yotsubashi Chikara’s son.
I don’t entirely know where this confusion comes from. As far as I can tell, the early scanlations didn’t get it wrong—one rendered the line in Chapter 218 about Destro having a child he didn’t know about as being children, plural, but otherwise, they were all accurate enough. It seems people just assumed that the child mentioned in 218 must be Re-Destro, who was, after all, right there on the panel. Even though the scanlations never said it, even though the official translation never said it, even though ample evidence in the manga disproves it, the idea still got around that Rikiya is Chikara’s son.
I have and will maintain that this is obviously wrong if you stop to think about it for even a moment, but unfortunately, most people don’t. The error can be found on less well-tended parts of the fandom wiki[1]; it’s in tumblr meta posts about the villains; it’s in fanfic.
And now, god help me, it is on the official anime website, too.
“Stillness-in-green, maybe you should consider that you might just be wro—”
I will face BONES and walk backwards into hell.
But if you want, you can come with me, and I’ll explain on the way. Hit the jump.
Dialogue + Narration
There are two places where the relationship between Chikara and Rikiya is explicitly addressed—the lead-in to the dinner scene in Chapter 218 and the fight between Clone!Shigaraki and RD in Chapter 232. If you include the Ultra Analysis databook, the number goes up to four: once each in Re-Destro and Destro Classic’s character blurbs.
Let’s take a look at each of those places, shall we?
The relevant Japanese text here is in the first narration box: 子ども, kodomo.
Kodomo is not gendered. It literally just means child. The key kanji is 子, ko. Like most kanji, it has a lot of potential readings, and you can add other kanji to it to modify it. Add 息 and you get musuko, son. Pronounce 子 as shi instead of ko, and you get a term that is frequently, though not exclusively, used to refer to boys. Add 女 to that reading and you get joshi, woman/girl. 子 is in a lot of words, many of them gendered! Used for kodomo as Hori does here, though, it does nothing to indicate a gender one way or the other.
Also too, it does nothing to indicate that Rikiya is the child in question; it simply states that there was such a child, somewhere in the world. Now, the natural assumption for anyone who knows how the graphic novel medium works and who understands basic literary analysis would be that the significant character we just met is, in fact, the child in question—except that everything else we learn about Destro and the original Meta Liberation Army here makes it entirely impossible.
I’ll do a full breakdown on why that is in the next section. In the meantime, here’s the next reference:
Here, we’re looking at the phrase the Viz translation renders as, “His blood runs through these veins.” The literal Japanese there is, Desutoro no matsuei chi o tsugu mono! In a literal translation, chi o tsugu mono means, “one who inherits the blood,” or, more loosely, “blood successor.” It’s matsuei—末裔—that’s the key word here.
Japanese has several words to express the concept of “descendant.” Matsuei is one word; the data book uses shison. So what’s the difference? Well, I’ll talk about shison in a moment, but I had an inkling of it just from looking at the kanji in matsuei—“end” and “descendant” respectively, leaving me with an impression of something like a final descendant or the terminus of the bloodline. Further research confirmed it: shison can refer to any lineal blood tie, but matsuei refers to a bloodline’s final inheritor, the person at the end of a long line of many, or even countless, generations. It’s the difference between being able to point to a grandparent and the kind of painstaking genealogical research that lets you[2] point to a famous royal from eight hundred years ago—matsuei is a word that very much assumes the existence of those countless generations.
So not only does Rikiya’s line there not imply that he’s Chikara’s son, but his specific word choice also tells us that he cannot be Chikara’s son. That’s, uh. Pretty conclusive, I would say.
Lastly, though, there’s also the data book. This is, perhaps, the actual closest you’re going to get to a manga equivalent of those character blurbs on the anime website, at least until such time as Hori deigns to give the MLA types character profile pages. (I live ever in hope.)
There are two relevant bits of text, one in Re-Destro’s entry, and the other in Destro Classic’s. The first describes how Re-Destro organizes the MLA as Desutoro no chi o tsugu mono: the same phrase he uses for himself in the manga, minus the matsuei. @codenamesazanka (the one who told me about the databook references among other citations, bless) rendered it as “Destro’s blood successor”; I have also seen it given as “the successor of Destro’s bloodline.” Note again, the lack of reference to a father/son bond.
Chikara’s entry uses that other descendant word I mentioned before, 子孫, shison. Notice that the term uses that ko kanji from kodomo before? As it does in joshi, 子 here reads shi. The other kanji, 孫, means grandchild. Thus, literally, grandchild-child—or, in the vernacular, simply descendant.
And then we have the anime website.
So, for comparison’s sake, the anime website uses 息子—the same combination of kanji that I said earlier gives you musuko, son. Heck, it even uses 父, chichi, for Destro—father. It’s as explicit as it’s possible to be, and I just don’t know why or how the anime website could fuck that up so bad when absolutely nothing in the manga describes the two Yotsubashis that way, and, indeed, one specific word choice actually rules out the possibility.
So, that’s all the manga says directly. It’s not the only evidence there is, though. In fact, the next piece makes it even more clear how colossally and impossibly wrong a father/son connection for Destro and his modern successor is.
Timeline
The long and short of this section is, “Since Harima Oji was Sako Atsuhiro’s great-great-grandfather, there is no possible way that Destro—who pre-dated Harima—can be Re-Destro’s father.” If you read that sentence and nodded your complete understanding and agreement, feel free to skip ahead to the last section. If you’d like the full explanation it takes to reach that sentence’s conclusion, though, read on.
So, aside from the word matsuei, the timeline is the most telling piece of evidence to my eye. I address it secondly rather than firstly because it’s less direct than the explicit narration; it relies on drawing conclusions based on things we’ve been told elsewhere rather than on the immediately relevant text. Oh, Mr. Compress’s relationship to Harima is explicit enough, but on what am I basing my claim that Destro predates him?
Regarding that, there’s no explicit year relative to My Hero Academia’s current events given for when Destro and the original Meta Liberation Army were active; the same is true for Harima Oji’s escapades. However, we are given some broad-strokes information, relative not to current events, but rather to the history of heroism as a legal institution in Japan.
We know that there was a widespread, lengthy period of chaos following the rise of quirks—called meta-abilities in those early years. At some point, however, people began to search for a way for meta-humans to live in peace with non-metas. The compromise that was reached was the foundation of professional heroism in Japan—while the use of meta-abilities would be legal in private settings, it was only by becoming licensed by the state as “heroes” that people could use their quirks in public.[3]
The legislation curtailing the use of meta-abilities—and the appropriation of a dead woman’s language to popularize a law establishing exactly the opposite of what she used that language to call for—is what catalyzed the rise of the original MLA. Thus, we can position Destro as being alive and active around the same time that heroism as a legal institution was being formed. Since we further know that he committed suicide in prison, we can assume that his child was conceived at some point prior to his capture. Ergo, Destro’s child, were they alive today, would be as old as Japanese professional heroism itself.
Next, consider Harima Oji, the Peerless Thief, a criminal who targeted the riches of “sham heroes.” We’re specifically told that he was active in the days in which the current system was settling into place—e.g. he only became active once the Hero System was established enough to have produced corrupt heroes. We’re told he preached reformation—he wasn’t just some pre-existing criminal who saw a shiny new target in heroes; he had specific grievances which he wanted addressed by the system, and which the system was not addressing.
The earliest Harima could possibly be active, then, is concurrent with Destro—Harima fighting against the corrupt people who had found their way into the new heroic institution, and Destro fighting against using the institution of heroism to oppress non-heroes. What I think is more likely, though, is that Harima came after Destro—Harima needed to have had time to realize what kinds of fakes had been drawn to this shiny new career path, maybe even to spend some time trying to change things the legal way.
I don’t suspect they were separated by very long—I would imagine Destro was easily within Harima’s living memory, and might well have influenced why he chose the path of protest that he did—but I do think they were separate.
Moving forward, then, Mr. Compress is four generations distant from his famous ancestor. Thus, even if you assume that Harima is of the same generation as Chikara, that’s what you’re looking at for Chikara’s child: someone who, were they alive today, would be old enough to be the great-grandparent of a thirty-two-year-old man.
Re-Destro’s probably a few years older than Mr. C, sure,[4] but that man doesn’t have Ujiko’s slow-aging quirk. Unless you want to start pulling theories about cryogenic stasis the story for some reason never saw fit to mention out of thin air, Re-Destro is in no way old enough to fit the bill.
This is backed up by one other piece of the timeline as well, and one more place we can look at language:
The small child at the center of the image is Rikiya, so young that he’s in schoolboy shorts for a meeting otherwise so formal that he’s been made to wear a tie. He’s, what, six to nine here, tops? And the adults speaking to him say that they’ve been in hiding for generations—代々, daidai, the kanji for generation followed by a kanji that just means, “See that kanji written right before me? Yeah, just read that one again.”
The original MLA was active for only a handful of years, and, per Chapter 218, they didn’t dissolve until Destro was captured. Thus, we can assume they have been in hiding since then, but not before then. With that in mind, this is another line that renders a father/son relationship impossible.
Remember, Chikara already had a child in the world circa his capture. If Rikiya were Chikara’s son, then Destro’s capture and his army’s subsequent dissolution could not have happened any farther back than nine months plus however old Rikiya was in this exact moment of his youth. Rikiya, who we see here as a child of less than ten.
Ten years in hiding doesn’t make one generation; it damn sure doesn’t make multiple ones.
Now, you could make theories about cryogenic statis that would explain this ludicrous discrepancy, sure. You could also theorize about e.g. artificial insemination,[5] or time stop quirks, or any number of other possibilities in the vast panoply the HeroAca world offers. The point is, though, that you don’t need to. There was, in the manga, no discrepancy that needed to be explained. It is only fanon misinterpretation and a glaring disinterest in the series’ villains from official sources that have presented this issue.
I’m praying that it’s all just a misunderstanding on the part of whoever maintains the website, and that the anime itself will render the relevant bits of dialogue correctly. Given the extreme cuts and alterations that My Villain Academia has been subjected to thus far, though, I’m sure you can appreciate my being concerned.
…So that’s the meat of it. The idea that Rikiya is Chikara’s son is wrong simply on the basis of what’s said in the text, and it’s doubly wrong on the basis of the timeline. There is, though, one other thing I think points towards Re-Destro being exactly the descendant he says he is, not a son playing down the connection out of humility or something. This one is a lot more headcanon-y, though, so I saved it for last.
MLA Social Dynamics
It’s quite simple. We have, in the MLA, a group of people that venerates Destro’s bloodline to an obviously unhealthy degree, putting up portraits of him wherever they can get away with it, tagging his successor with a “Re-” as if to invoke reincarnation or miraculous return, entirely willing to throw their lives away for what they think was his cause, and others’ lives if those others say anything too scathing about the words Destro wrote, quite as if they treat Destro’s memoir as some sort of holy writ.
They venerate Destro that much, and you’re trying to tell me that they wouldn’t just call a spade a spade and acknowledge RD as the son of their great leader? Come on.
Since long before I turned up the matsuei factoid in researching this piece, since long before Mr. Compress gave us such a helpful generational comparison, I’ve held the opinion that, given a group that holds their leaders in such high esteem, with such particular regard for bloodline, the only reason Rikiya does just call himself a descendant, rather than citing the specific term for what he is, is that the specific term is distant enough that it actually does sound more impressive to just say “descendant,” rather than something like, “great-great-great-grandson.” That kind of thing just begs the question, “What took you guys so long?” or, “You and how many other people, buddy?”
Mr. Compress may have the panache to carry off a line like that, but Rikiya’s a different story. If he had something so amazing up his sleeve as, “I am the son of the great Destro,” I have to think he’d just say it proudly, not fall back on the impressionistic vaguery of something like chi o tsugu mono. Even if I had no other evidence to work with, I’d think the same—all the evidence you need is right there in the character writing of who Rikiya and the MLA are and how they talk about the man whose dreams Re-Destro was raised to carry.
A closing note: I will allow that Rikiya is being overdramatic when he uses matsuei and its connotation of countless generations. There are a few other things we can use to trace the history of heroism—Ujiko’s age, and the 18-years-or-less periods that One For All was held by its pre-All Might bearers—and running those numbers leads me to believe that it is, in fact, entirely possible to count the number of generations between Rikiya and Chikara, and the number, while higher than one, is probably not all that high. Certainly matsuei is being more dramatic about it than is entirely warranted, hence the poetic flourish of the official translation’s, “His blood runs through these veins!” The theatricality only makes me fonder of him, however.

FOOTNOTES
[1] It was changed and reverted on Re-Destro’s page at least twice before it finally stuck in January of this year. Chikara’s page took until July to be corrected, and it’s still wrong on various other subpages.
[2] Or your kids, if you have those. Only the last generation in the bloodline is the matsuei, but that’s a moving goalpost as long as the bloodline is still propagating.
[3] This summary of events combines what we know from both My Hero Academia proper and the Vigilantes spin-off, which I recommend to anyone who’s at all interested in finer-grained worldbuilding on Hero Society Japan than the main series makes time for.
[4] I personally headcanon him as 42.
[5] To which point I would refer back to the word kodomo, and note that that word choice indicates that Destro had a child in the world. Not a sperm sample kept in a freezer somewhere, waiting for the right would-be mother: an actual child. Some quick research on my part says that the farthest that term stretches is in using it to refer to yet-unborn children, fetuses still in the womb. Seeing as Japan doesn’t even allow inmates conjugal visits in real life, much less in a setting where villains are so dehumanized that Tartarus is an acceptable punishment for them, the line about Destro “having a child out in the world” takes us right back to a date of conception no later than Destro’s final night of freedom.

MANGA REC LIST
I’ve been meaning to update this for a while, and I finally got around to it!
if you’re looking for some new manga to read, here’s my rec list below:
----
These are all varying levels of good- some are AMAZING and some are just a fun read.
For the most part I tried not to include REALLY popular series (like yeah: One Punch Man and Detective Conan and One Piece and whatever are good! but also you’ve probably already read them!)
Also, the categories are just for the sake of organization- take them with a grain of salt. Most of the series are comedy, even those not in the comedy section.
Bonus: here’s a post with more detailed descriptions for 10 of these series, including an example page from each.
and you can also check my manga recs tag I guess

Strange/stupid headcanon: Goku never actually grew out of touching people to identify gender.
Now, hear me out. He knows he's not actually allowed to do that. Both Chichi and Bulma talked to him and told him why that's wrong, but that doesn't mean he ever really learned how to identify genders otherwise.
SO, my thought process is that Goku has groped everyone in very subtle ways: during battle. No one would really question physical contact during so long as he wasn't obvious about it (like he never lingered). And that is the only reason Goku knows everyone's gender.
However, Piccolo was a fun one cause he doesn't have genetalia. So, Goku just used the same pronouns everyone around him uses because there's no other way to check (but you best believe he had an embarrassing conversation with Piccolo about it at some point).

I was there was a GL version of the Untamed with 40+ episodes but predominantly female dramas don’t do that well unless the leads are well known (I would love to see two popular actresses be in a GL Wuxia or xianxia drama as the leads).
SAME I WANT THAT SO BADLY
below the cut is just. mm. musings and some novels i’ve found, although still looking for more.
i would absolutely love a gl wuxia or xianxia drama. my hope is sort of that since bl is getting some surge in adaptations, and there’s some tentative bigger gl* coming out this year, if they do well then they might be made more often as it will be seen as less of a risk maybe? since teams will have seen how well it does/what to expect. so ahh. i hope...
*(also this is just my optimism talking, but i sort of love the shaw eleven lang For All the Badass women, and the fact i very much ship the 2 main heroines - they have a guy they both like but also i just love how they interact. its sort of the opposite situation as My Roommate is a Detective or Detective L with a trio core, the women have chemistry together and just happen to have a 3rd party they’re romantic with. this is just me watching the first handful of eps tho but, definitely a tiny draw for me. also it really does not pull punches about women kicking ass, which was refreshing after Eternal Love that so often took the women out of fights. And Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain is an ensemble cast, with a m/w main couple, but both of them have intense bi energy and flirt with their respective same gender friends before their own romance together kicks off, which felt really nice to see so casually in a drama? i watched about half of that.)
which, not even just in cdramas but 2 female leads in general in shows isn’t as particularly common... or else we’d have more stuff like killing eve, and i can’t think of any female led period stuff except maybe kind of black sails - or gentleman jack or harlots which i plan to check out but haven’t. i can think of a lot of 2 male lead shows, and a fair number of ensemble cast shows, but not that many with 2 female leads which. mm i’d like more of.
i am also. constantly on the lookout for female lead cdramas. i just made the list of potential gl dramas but, tbh even just 2 female main leads could be nice (like dear missy). i can think of some good ensemble cast stuff but not many with 2 female leads.
even in cnovels, when i look for translations i’ve found FGEP (Female General and Eldest Princess) and JWQS (Clear and Muddy Loss of Love). but not many others.
Although I just did a search now and found Didn’t Know the General was Female being translated and completed by chichi. The Witch Nichang being translated by leirion. Princess Spare my life, and Eastward Flow. So I’m excited to see there’s more being actively translated now compared to the last time I checked!
I’ve been looking for sci fi gl novels and mystery ones (kind of in the vein of Silent Reading by Priest?) but when i look into larger rec lists on like cnovel sites with rankings its hard for me to figure out which ones are my kinda thing without reading a few chapters and. last time i did that i clicked a modern romance fluff one about college students which is 100% not my thing so i gave up looking that way for a while.
I am very much always open to hear about and gl drama recommendations or novel recommendations! If anyone has them please!
In that post I did I mentioned the ones I knew about. Also like - Pearl Next Door which aired recently, which while its not my kind of thing exactly i Loved how true to life it felt and grounded the characters were and the actors all did <3. And Legend of Yunqian which is short but <3
#replies#ask#anonymous#gl#gl dramas#gl cnovels#ok well. ive heard in the donghua community a lot of love for the fgep novel#and possible rumors it might get a donghua adaptation which#would be really nice i think#it already has a manhua#and i know ive found an audo drama although im not sure if it was fanmade#but theres definitely some vocal interest in some of these gl novels getting adapted#and i think if a few make it big like the untamed#that might push more willingness for teams to try to actually make those stories#although also like. thai dramas and taiwan are already making some#also a shout out to twdrama Bromance which is not a bl or a gl#but baron chen is in it and it handles gender in a very interesting way#its a take on the girl dressed as man except she's lived as a man her whole life#and its sort of like her wanting to identify as a woman? but also not minding continuing to identify as a man#but im only 20 eps in so im not sure how the journey is going yet#but its a nuanced show despite being so kindheartedly light. taiwan has some great dramas#also the cdrama Bureau of Transformer#which features 2 bi leads and one is nonbinary#and it was refreshing i guess seeing a lead i could relate to that way

My very own Dragon Ball Original Character, Accordion has his own design at last! Hooray!
As I was drawing him out, I wanted to incorporate some noticable Namekian features while at the same time, retain his appearance "demon like". Profile below!
Name: Accordion
Gender: Male.
Age: Unknown. Estimation: Older than Ma Junior/Piccolo, Younger than Goku in human age.
Species: "Demon" Namekian.
Occupation: Former soldier and subordinate to King Piccolo/Piccolo Daimaō. Currently, subordinate to Ma Junior/Piccolo.
Alignment: Formerly Lawful Evil, Currently Neutral Good.
Personality:
Before: Aloof, cares very little to nothing about other lives, ruthless, sadistic, blood thirsty, loyal to his Master/Sire.
After: Serves as a big brother figure to his current master/younger brother, protective over him, still unsociable most of the time, quiet, genuine hearted and independent thinker.
Family:
Katas: Grandfather (Deceased)
Kami: Good half of Sire separated (Now part of Ma Junior/Piccolo)
Piccolo Daimaō: Sire, Former Master (Deceased)
Other "Demon" Namekians: Older brothers (Deceased)
Piano: Younger brother (Deceased)
Tambourine: Younger brother (Deceased)
Cymbal: Younger brother (Deceased)
Drum: Younger Brother (Deceased)
Ma Junior/Piccolo: Reincarnation of Sire/Younger brother
Son Goku: Former enemy, Current Father in-law.
Chichi: Mother in-law
Son Gohan Jr: Brother in-law
Son Goten: Brother in-law
Clarinet/Son Rinet: Niece
Son Goshen: Nephew
Son Fuji: Niece
Yamcha: Mate
Wanta: Daughter
Backstory:
He was one of King Piccolo/Piccolo Daimaō’s stronger yet not much known minion/spawn. Born shortly before Piano when King Piccolo/Daimaō was freed from his long imprisonment, his main duty was to safeguard the elderly villain. He assisted his rejuvenated, youthful Sire/Master when they conquered the world, overthrowing the King of the World.
As Accordion fought alongside his master and witness him die in the hands of a young Son Goku, King Piccolo at his last moments, telepathically gave him the duty to watch over, take care of his newest spawn and survive to see his wish realized. Accordion was assumed to have perished along with the Daimaō but in reality, he laid low to oversee his deceased Master's heir's survival and training him to accomplish their Sire's wish: killing Goku. But after witnessing Piccolo change over the years from the first fight with Goku up to observing the initially perceived demon turned Namekian undergoing character development through his bond with Son Gohan, Accordion himself felt that there was more to his own life and the world than what he was told early on in his life. He soon got over his evil heart and ways as well as developing his own individual character and humanity while still serving his current master/younger brother. From there, he came to know Yamcha who had his relationship with Bulma/Bloomer ended. They help comfort each other and assist one another to move on and in doing so, tiny sparks fly between them...
Yes, I created this OC because one: I feel there is not enough love for Namekians or interest about King Piccolo/Piccolo Daimaō and his minions. Two: I want to ship Yamcha with a character since the poor dude’s obviously been treated as a sad joke by both canon and the fandom. In all seriousness, I don’t understand why Yamcha is considered the least favourite DB character, he was really cool in DB and half of DBZ. I honestly like Yamcha and I do believe that he deserved better than what shit rep the canon storyline gave him. Hence, Accordion being created to remedy that and I really wanted to make some gay love~ Accordion would love Yamcha for who he is, regardless his flaws and imperfections. After all, nobody's perfect, am I right?
P.S.: I'm shipping both Gohan and Piccolo together (HanP/Piccohan) since HanV/Vihan is definitely not my jam. That ship is definitely my NOTP in Dragon Ball. Don't come bashing me for this. If you don't like, just ignore, ok? Nuff said.
Accordion, Clarinet/Son Rinet, Son Goshen, Son Fuji and Wanta are mine while the rest of the mentioned characters belong to their respective owners.
UPDATE
I also ship him with Dabura since I don't mind Yamcha with Tien.

a/n: First of all thank you for everyone who is still reading my story regularly. I'm going to make a little time jump here now because I want to push the story a bit and there is another reason, but you will see it in the next updates. If you feel like I have forgotten something and you want to find out more about past events, feel free to ask #atw questions. Especially now after this update, I will go into detail with your question about the events that arose in the time jump.
One year later…
I can hardly believe that I write everything down here. How do I start? Dear Diary? The last time I wrote everything down was when I was 16 years old. But I don't want to forget the last year and write down something about it to have a review. So what happened ... Where should I start?
Yuta had grown in hid new role and is now used to being a father. Chichi is now 21 months old and she is getting prettier every day. Yuta was lucky because his daughter was so calm and loving. He had a really easy time with her. His ex-girlfriend and Chichi's mother, Shiori, had never come back. Yuta had been trying to find her for a while, but it was like she was gone. He also had contact with the Osaka police. But then one day he saw her again in a commercial and he couldn't believe how heartless Shiori was. But Yuta has gotten pretty protective about his daughter. He always cooked for her, kept an eye on her. I always thought Jaehyun was too protective at Miga, but Yuta was a step more extreme.
Yuta and Chichi were visiting Jaehyun. You were on the road with Miga and Jaehyun was taking care of Sunoh. Chichi and Sunoh had on this day a playdate. On the upper floor of your house, there was a room full of toys. Jaehyun and Yuta chatted while Sunoh and Chichi played. They interacted with each other more and more, even if they couldn't do much with each other at that age. Jaehyun had a bowl of grapes with him because Sunoh has loved them lately. Chichi then became curious, because if Sunoh had liked it so much, she would have to taste it too. But she was a little too greedy and choked on the grape. Yuta started to get in panic as he sees that Chichi couldn't breathe and her face went red. Jaehyun already knew how to react in such a situation, it was not the first time that a child choked in his presence. He took Chichi, put her over his leg and patted her back. A few seconds later the little girl coughs out the grape and it falls to the ground. "Everything is all right again?" Jaehyun smiled and looked into Chichi's face, who looked around in surprise. She nodded and Yuta took her straight away. "Is everything really good? Does something hurt you?" He hugged his daughter very tightly, but she was only perplexed. "I think I'm going to the hospital with her." Yuta put Chichi down again and held her hand. "She's healthy. She just choked a little bit." Jaehyun rolled his eyes and laughed. "But what if something slipped into her windpipe? What if the grape broke something in her?" Yuta panicked and put his things together. "Everything is okay, if not she would show you." Jaehyun crossed his arms and watched his friend panic. "But she's so small. I'm going now to the hospital." And it took less than two minutes for Yuta to be out of the house.
Johnny loved being a father and he reminded me of the time when Jaehyun had his first child. He was also protective of his daughter Jaina. He hardly took his eyes off her, but he also enjoyed spending time with Jaehyun and Yuta when they met with their children. They have now become their own daddy clique and have spent a lot of time together. But Johnny dreamed of a big family and he didn't want to waste time. It wasn't long before Johanna was pregnant again and she is currently in the 6th month.
"No party this time?" Jaehyun laughed and took a sip of his red wine. Johnny and Johanna came to you for dinner that evening. A few days ago, they get to know the gender of their child and they wanted to tell you two it today. "No, it was too stressful for us," said Johnny. "Yes, and my nausea hasn't stopped, and I need to rest." Johann stroked her big stomach and sighed. "It's unbelievable how every pregnancy is different, isn't it? I mean, you think the body is going through the same thing anyway, but there are always other symptoms." You smile and Johanna could only agree with you. "So tell us, will it be a boy or a girl?" Jaehyun looked impatiently at his friend. You've been curious all day and thinking about what it will be. "It's a boy!" Johnny raised his hands cheering in the air. "Ahh that's perfect. Then you also have a girl and a boy." You are incredibly happy for them. Johnny and Johanna looked at each other and grinned. They were clearly overjoyed.
Soobin regularly helped us with the children. When Jaehyun and I had to go away or go on a date, she was always ready. I'm really happy to have her as a babysitter. Miga was very excited about her and Sunoh accepted her...sometimes. But I noticed that she was concentrating on something else besides the children. She must have fallen in love with Jaehyun. When he was here, her behavior was completely different, she wore more make-up and dressed more elegantly, also a little bit sexy. I wasn't sure if it was a harmless crush from a 17-year-old girl or if I should be worried.
"Hello Mr. Jung." She smiled broadly and played with a strand of her hair. "Hi, Soobin. My wife is still upstairs and getting ready. Then we go." Jaehyun smiled gently and then turned back to Miga, who was sitting on his lap. Soobin put her things on the kitchen counter and watched Jaehyun play with his daughter. "Daddy again!" Miga squeaked with joy and Jaehyun nodded. "Where are you Miga, I'll catch you soon." Jaehyun wanted to grab his daughter, so she got his shirt up so that his bare torso was free and then hid down under his shirt. "Oh no! Where's my daughter? She was just there!" Jaehyun was super good at this game and Miga loved it. Then she raised his shirt again and grinned at her father. "Here I am Daddy!" This game repeated itself over and over again. Soobin was paralyzed. She couldn't help but stare at Jaehyun's naked torso all the time. And you see it when you go down the stairs with Sunoh. Soobin didn't even notice you but just stared at your husband's abs. And you knew it’s just a 17-year-old girl, but it kind of bothered you. Maybe because she was such a good babysitter and yet had an intimate look in your life. "Hello Soobin", you greeted her kindly and she was immediately startled. "Ms. Jung! Hello!" She lowered her head and turned away from you.
Sunoh was already 2 years old. It was incredible how time flies. Since Jaehyun was at home, he had a better connection with his father. Jaehyun took a lot of time for his son because he knew that he had missed a lot of him. Still, Sunoh had become extremely clingy. He only wants to be with me at the moment. It took a while for other people to interact with him. Even if I leave him every time, even if it is only 10 minutes to get something quickly, he started a drama and cried every time. By now Sunoh can say a few words, even 1-2 sentences. Miga also had more fun with him now because she could interact with her little brother much more. Jaehyun and I were especially proud when he took his first steps.
Miga was sitting on a small children's table and draw something. Jaehyun and you sit on the floor with Sunoh and play with him. He could stand alone for a while and he was getting better at it. "Come on, let's see if he can walk a little." Jaehyun smiled and took Sunoh. He immediately started to cry because he wanted to go back to his mother. You slide a little bit away from him and open your arms. "Come on Sunoh." You smile and he looked at you with his dark brown eyes as he sucked his fingers. Jaehyun set it up and slowly let him go. Sunoh was so fixated on you that he didn't even notice that he was standing alone. "Come to Mummy!" You smile and then it happened that you didn't think was possible. You just only wanted to try it, but he took a step forward, then another, the third already wiggled his legs and the fourth you catch your son. "Did you see that?" You hug Sunoh and look at Jaehyun. He put his phone aside and grinned. "Everything is recorded!" He slips closer to you and kisses Sunoh's head. "I'm so proud of you." He then stroked his son's back and then kissed you.
Miga is now 5 years old. She is so tall now, and she grew more and more in her role as a big sister. I’m so incredibly proud of her. But she is still very fixated on her father, I think that will never stop. The two have their own connection. But Miga was pretty successful in the entertainment industry. She starred in a few commercials and recently she had a role in a drama. There she plays the daughter of a single father. I just want Miga to do as much as she wants, but she really enjoyed acting. She was always looking forward to shooting days and everyone was amazed by her. Nevertheless, I still make sure that she doesn't do too much and still has a childhood. But when we first saw Miga in a drama, we were incredibly proud of her.
"Look, that's me." Miga points to the television and jumps up and down on the couch. "Yes, we can see that. But we also want to watch the show." Jaehyun took her and snuggled up to her. When you watched the drama you were so surprised that your daughter could act so well. She was really convincing. "Wow, Miga you did really great." You give your daughter a big kiss on the cheek. She giggled and blushed. "Was that fun for you?", asked Jaehyun and was quite perplexed because of her great talent. Miga started hopping on the couch again and nodded. "YESSSS!" She hopped on and spread kisses on Jaehyun. It looks like your daughter will probably become an actress.
Jaehyun had taken a step back after releasing his solo album. Johnny and Yuta also followed and that made things even easier for him. But Jaehyun was not completely out of the industry. He still moderated a music show on a regular basis, he was still a model and he participated in “The Return of the Superman” again. But he now had a lot more time for his children. He enjoyed this time and Miga and Sunoh grew more and more to him. I was also happy to have him around me, the times of his solo career were tough because he was almost never at home. But since Jaehyun was back, the house has been revitalized. Everything became more homely and familiar.
You were out the evening and come home after dinner. You can hear the TV running, but also noise in the kitchen. Then you hear little feet patting. You follow the steps and they guide you into the living room. It ran Frozen at the TV and Jaehyun was lying on the couch with Sunoh in his arms and two men were sleeping. But then you see how brown eyes with long eyelashes looked at you. "Miga, what are you doing?" You lean over and see how she just stuffed a fat cookie in her mouth. "Hey daddy, wake up." You shake Jaehyun and he sleepily opens his eyes. "What happened?" He looked around and you had to laugh. "Our daughter found the candy drawer." You sigh and lift Sunoh up. "Oh no, I fell asleep." Jaehyun scratched his head and looked at his children. It has not always been easy to take care of them and they use a lot of energy.
And for me ... a lot has happened, but somehow not. I started with training again. Jaehyun and I build in our house a small fitness room. I also found good friends in the neighborhood. They were all super kind and received me well. I tried also to get pregnant all year round. But it didn't work. As much as we tried, the tests were always negative. For a while, I was really sad about it, almost depressed. I focused too much on getting pregnant. My last low was when Johanna said that she was pregnant again. I couldn't stop crying that day. I found it unfair and I wanted nothing more than to have a child as well. But the pressure I put on it also put a little strain on the relationship with Jaehyun. Our sex life only focused on making a child. It became very platonic and functional. We also lost our desire for sex and I knew that this was not normal. We never were like that. Apparently, the time was not right for another child and I decided to take the pressure off myself and the relationship. At first, I thought about starting to work again, but my job was not really family-friendly. I decided to start studying. I always wanted to study law and I studied for the entrance exam all summer. And I was accepted. I have been studying in Seoul for over two months and I really enjoy it. I can watch some of the lectures at home and the seminars were mostly in the morning, where Jaehyun was always with the children anyway. It felt good to do something else again. I like to be a mother, of course, but studying is also incredibly good for me.
"Hey what are you doing?" Jaehyun came to you and stroked your shoulders. You close your laptop and smile. "Just something for the university." You lean your head back as his hands brushed all over your body. "I am so proud of you that you do it." Jaehyun put his lips on your neck and sucked on it. You close your eyes and enjoy his touch. Your sex life was platonic, but since you started studying, the pressure was gone and your sex became uninhibited and free as before. "Come over." Jaehyun picked you up and threw you into the sheets. He pulled up his shirt and leaned over you. No, your sex life was definitely no longer boring!!!

Any Son and/or Briefs family headcanons? Spicy hot takes? Truths Toriyama and Toyotaro themselves can not handle? Straight up lies?
GODDAMN SORRY this took a while cause i suck at putting thoughts together. i apologize for my obvious briefs bias i have more hcs for them than the son family despite loving them both :pensive: anyway heres some random stuff
briefs hcs:
all of the briefs are pros at non-verbal communication. i hc that saiyans have their own language (and also in my own Mind Canon they still have their fuckin tails) and a lot of it is done through tail movement/body posture/grunts/etc. etc so theyve all sort of picked that up. even bulma, who doesnt have a tail, is pretty good at getting across what she means without actually speaking. they still do speak normally but it comes in handy sometimes considering that both trunks and vegeta are prone to running out of speaking energy or getting very frustrated with words, so having another way to communicate works very well for them
vegeta is fffffffffffffffffffurry. without getting too deep into my own General Saiyan hcs (thats why i made a whole ass four subspecies!!) i think that the entirety of planet vegeta tended to be very hot aside from the part where the castle was, where the temperature would drop. meaning that saiyans working in the palace would grow thicker fur around certain parts of their body, and in the royal saiyans theyd be Especially fluffy. he kept it down on earth, but he has thick patches of fur around the bottom parts of his arms and legs. kind of like snowy boots and gloves! he also has fur that grows in on his neck like a lions mane.
future trunks is an actions sponge, vegeta is a words sponge. vegeta will pick up words VERY quickly regardless if he fully understands the meaning of it or not (completely inspired by 'THATS RIGHT BOYS... MONDO COOL' in z) and future trunks will unintentionally mimic the actions of people - around people he looks up to he might take a few small mannerisms from but this extends to copying the disposition of anyone; he's just very adaptive. this is the most obvious (and funniest) when he's around vegeta bc it really shows like. yeah damn that sure is vegeta's son
vegeta & bulla have an intimidating bastard smirk naturally. their natural smiles are pretty frightening and they have to put effort into a 'normal' one. this also extends to current trunks, his default smile is the Vegeta Bastard Smirk but he learned to have a normal smile quicker than his father and sister. future trunks has a slightly unnerving natural smile (the fact that his pupils are always drawn so fucking small makes me hc that he just has a very intimidating look of 'cat thats about to pounce on an unfortunate trapped mouse' whenever he smiles) but he learned to look normal even quicker than current trunks since he's around humans a Lot and is sort of their uh, Hope. don't want to look scary to the people who depend on you!
bulma has some fighting knowledge and mildly good ki control. vegeta taught her it as a just in case so that she'd be able to defend herself against Bigger threats if he wasn't there and also so she could raise her own ki to alert someone to her if she had to.
vegeta is extremely clean and can not stand to have things disorganized for more than like... an hour before he has to tidy everything up. every time he goes down to the lab and bulma is passed out in a pile of bolts and circuit boards it kills him inside just a little bit
future trunks has little concept of power control. since his timeline was always in danger it wasn't really an important thing for him to learn. the amount of mugs he's accidentally crushed is impressive
vegeta tends to not sound like he's asking questions when he is. he doesn't add the proper infliction to the end of his questions and just sounds flat most of the time. it's confusing to people who dont know him well.
im not even gonna lie, im a BIG fan of the chill demon panchy headcanon so i love the idea that the briefs have a Lil bit of demon in them but just dont know it ghjnkm
[banging my fists on the 'hcs that not even got could take away from me' table] future trunks has OCD
vegeta doesn't really get labels but he's bisexual & "debatably a man", bulma is bisexal & bigender transfem (sometimes shes Wamen and other times its like "gender? no"), bulla is a nonbinary lesbian, current trunks is a bisexual trans man & future bulma forgot to explain the concept of gender and sexuality to future trunks so he's a little confused on that front and his gender & sexuality are "i have literally never thought abt these concepts in my life but i think men are nice. i refuse to think about gender though" (i actually have two main hcs for future trunks which are either gay trans man or more-feminine-presenting nonbinary bisexual)
son hcs:
goku is Not as fluffy as vegeta at all, but he does have fur on certain parts of his body. namely on the back of his elbows + ankles, down his back connecting to his tail, and on his shoulders. its inherented from gine!
gohan is learning saiyan language from vegeta! vegeta acts grumpy about it but he's glad to have someone to teach. when gohan learned that most of the history had been lost he basically wished shenron for a big ol book on saiyan culture and gave it to vegeta just as an act of kindness and vegeta was like [in an angry voice but very touched] "Ok. Sit down. You're learning." by extension gohan is also teaching the rest of his family!
i will take ox king being actually non-human to my grave so like, chichi has horns and a very short ox tail! gohan and goten both have horns, but they're hidden by hair. goten's horns are bigger than gohans.
goten also has a more ox-like tail, with a little puff of fur at the end. generally, gohan looks more saiyan-like and goten looks more ox/human-like.
although he keeps up his cheery demeanor very well, goku is still haunted pretty badly by like... everything that’s happened in his life. he still has frequent nightmares about cell & buu specifically.
gohan will freak out at worse, zone out at best, if he's even tapped on the neck. it reminds him of the whole 'getting his neck snapped on namek' so that area is pretty off limits to everyone
goten gets along really well with android 17. they both have a love for nature and 17s kind of like his chill uncle, so whenever he gets too stressed out or just needs a break you can find him face down on the ground outside of 17's place on monster island.
goku is really really good at remembering completely random shit. bulma uses this to her advantage whenever she's working and has him memorize random technology stuff. a week later goku can not remember what he had for breakfast that morning but as soon as bulma asks "hey do you remember what i told you last week" hes like "oh yeah sure i have no idea what it means but [blurts out three hours worth of technical garble]"
oh boy is this a headcanon that has a lot more depth to it than just a bullet on a tumblr post, but gohan has DID!
goku, like vegeta, doesnt get labels either, and does not even Try, ask him about any of it and hes like "i dont get the gender thing but i think lots of people look nice :)" gohan is gay and like vegeta, "debatably a man", goten + chichi are both bi nonbinary, & pan is a lesbian trans woman.
both:
bulla and pan are both into music! i think theyd mess around making their own stuff w/ launchpads
i have a general hc of ki mixing or shielding, essentially, if youre close enough to someone people wont be able to tell apart your ki and you can also 'shield' someone with your ki for a small amount of time. if vegeta has his energy low, his and bulma's energy are the same. same thing with goku and chichi! goten and trunks are near impossible to tell apart, and same thing with gohan and videl.
though goten and trunks are both protective over their younger siblings, gotenks is that protectiveness times a thousand. look at bulla or pan wrong for 2 seconds and you're going to have an angry gotenks in your face asking if you have any last words. i like to think that trunks and goten fused casually a lot, especially around the time where bulla and pan were young, so its basically goten and trunks own attachment to them PLUS gotenks' attachment to them as his own person combined.
i like to pretend end of z did not happen the way it did so uub, using nimbus, travels back and forth a lot. goku isn’t the only one who teaches him how to fight as goten, gohan and trunks all think of him like a little brother and love training with him!
fuck you letters to toriyama/toyotaro hot takes:
cell, as cool of a villian as he is, definitely should have had a creepier final form. or multiple- just something that really drives in the fact that he's made up of other's dna & fuckin ABSORBS people. also his first two forms should have had a different absorbtion method other than the tail thing (not the drinking thing thats fine) it just feels. Weird. not good
it would have been far more interesting to keep the bitter attitude towards vegeta that future trunks had imo... in super trunks was going through a Lot granted but the fact tht he wasnt more confrontational to vegeta being a dick to him seemed kind of off considering his attitude in z i just.. think it would be interesting and far better if they had more of a back and forth 'family but lowkey hate each other' relationship
i dont want to rant about super so heres some super condensed takes, goku black arc specific because thats 90% of what ive seen of super:
mai is a fucking freak ass weirdo, why did they not just make another character to pair with trunks
trunks not flipping the fuck out at his timeline being erased feels... out of character. also trunks deserved the win against zamasu
future bulma did NOT need to die
trunks should have just stayed in the current timeline
please fucking let trunks and goten grow up. we SAW a version of trunks who looked 14 (history of trunks....) and the versions of goten & trunks we have r/n in super do not look 13/14 respectively what in the goddamn hell is going on in the character design department
super definitely should have taken place later down the line
supers version of bulma and videl look awful. why are they That stick like.
vegeta needs to kill frieza. just once.
fu has enough potential to be a very interesting mainline character and i am so sad he's not
i would actively enjoy a sdbh anime with more budget that isnt just a promo anime and has a plot that makes sense... i think db should have more wild spinoffs
xenoverse deserved a better story that went FULL in on the 'what if' type of timelines- like they did in raging blast which is a FUCKING GREAT GAME
straight up lies:
dragon ball z is a good series
#yes db is my hyperfix. that doesnt mean its good <3 but its mine now and i make whatever i want canon#long post#fleetinginterest

AU, servant having to deal with parenthood (Be it getting knocked up, pregnancy, child birth or raising a baby.)
send me an AU and i’ll tell you 5 of my headcanons for it
Waaaaaaay too many muses to do five for each... So five random ones
Mordred is very jealous of the child of Saber/Tiroria/Chichi-ue/etc. as they are pretty much taking her spot and it leads to a lot of rivalry with ‘Big Dumbass Mordred’. They aren’t sure if Moe-chan is a brother or a sister so they settled on dumbass as prompted by the parents
The children inherit the Spirit Graphs to a lesser extent of the parents, meaning they can use their Noble Phantasms. Except for Saber and Shirou’s child. That one ended up with an odd form of Unlimited Blade Works and a lot of Noble Phantasms because of it
Oddly, Tamamo was present at every birth giving them encouragement, even at her own child’s. Cat is oddly supporting during them, Caster is pretty good at it and Bitch got punched every time; sometimes by the newborn baby
Merlin had to spend a whole two weeks in hiding when their child ended up a Saber Face. Either Merlin. Furthermore, no one is actually sure what the child’s gender is as they cannot assume male
95% of Chaldea is pretty sure Kiara gave birth to the second coming of Goetia as her womb still has and had an infinite number of demon pillars within it, resulting in the child having roughly several hundred nameless pillars contained within itself. It is the true closest thing Chaldea has to the Anti-Christ, even more than Merlin or their children

Hello, everyone~ I saw the post from @afilitaria on @theshatteredrose‘s blog about what their translator did to a piece of Marco’s dialogue~ TBH I headcanon them as husbands too and they’re my dads. Anyways, I decided to run that bit through Google Translate myself, but it gave me something very different. ("Yaleare. Please follow me as you are, my regret is sorry, you guys." Yeah, uh...) Then I remembered that the online dictionary I use sometimes, jisho.org, does text reading assistance as well. Let me put this under a Read More... I already accidentally gave a friend of mine a large spoiler for the game, so I’m trying to be really careful with my spoilers now...!
This is Marco’s dialogue:
「ヤレヤレ。うちの連れはこの通り、デカくてね、本当にすまないね、君たち」
Let’s break this down piece by piece… I used jisho.org for the breakdown. Um, though I don’t speak Japanese fluently by any means… So don’t take my word as gospel. https://jisho.org/search/「ヤレヤレ。うちの連れはこの通り、デカくてね、本当にすまないね、君たち」 if you want to follow along.
やれやれ Something like “Oh dear!” or “Good grief!” This wasn’t recognized when written in katakana, so I searched it up in hiragana.
うち(の) In this case, it is being used as a personal pronoun. Marco usually uses “boku” though… As a personal pronoun, it is used to refer to people close to you; it can be used to refer casually to one’s (workplace) company, or to refer to one’s household. However, it can also be used to refer specifically to one’s spouse… A bit more context is needed to know what Marco intends here, because “uchi no” is simply the possessive form of “uchi”.
Wa-pedia says:
“Used mostly by women [as a personal, singular pronoun]. A neutral version also refers to "us" (family, company, etc.) as opposed to "them" or "you".”
Wikipedia says:
“Means "one's own". Often used in western dialects especially the Kansai dialect. Generally written in kana. Plural form uchi-ra is used by both genders. Singular form is also used by both sexes when talking about the household, e.g., "uchi no neko" ("my/our cat"), "uchi no chichi-oya" ("my father"); also used in less formal business speech to mean "our company", e.g., "uchi wa sandai no rekkāsha ga aru" ("we (our company) have three tow-trucks").”
連れ(は) “Companion”. This would imply that “uchi” is being used as a personal pronoun, not to refer to Oliver as his husband. (“uchi no ure”=”my companion, a member of my household/company”) However, Marco and Oliver, to the best of my memory, do not introduce themselves as members of a guild. So the “company/workplace” context doesn’t make much sense here. Which means that most likely, Marco is including Oliver in his “household”. (Now, this could be because they’re married, or because they’re traveling companions. Or they could be related, but I find that highly unlikely… I also don’t know how Ren and Tlachtga, Lili and Solor, etc. refer to themselves in Japanese: “uchi” or “(pronoun)-tachi”?) There are, of course, probably other uses for “uchi” but a preliminary search brought up those two usages as the most common. But I’m not fluent in Japanese by any means, so feel free to correct me… “Uchi no ure wa…” is the topic.
(この)通り
Seems to refer to one’s path or way of going. “...kono toori…” means “this way/path,” roughly.
デカくて (でかい?)
Seems to be a form of “dekai” from what I can tell. “Dekai” means “huge; big; gargantuan” and seems to be informal? (Colloquialism) “Dekakute” is literally “huge and…” but doesn’t seem to mean that here. None of the options for “dekai” made sense in katakana, so I searched “dekai” in hiragana.
本当に
“Really” or “truly”.
すまない An apology.
君たち
“Your group.” (You-tachi)
Wa-pedia says: “Used by men to talk to younger women or children, or to intimate people.”
Wikipedia says: “The kanji means "lord" (archaic) and is also used to write -kun. Informal to subordinates; can also be affectionate; formerly very polite. Among peers typically used with 僕 boku. Often seen as rude or assuming when used with superiors, elders or strangers.” Makes sense since Marco most often refers to himself with “boku”.
On the subject of “boku,” Wikipedia says: “Used by males of all ages; very often used by boys. Perceived as humble, but can also carry an undertone of "feeling young" when used by males of older age. Also used when casually giving deference; "servant" uses the same kanji (僕 shimobe). Can also be used as a second-person pronoun toward male children (English equivalent – "kid" or "squirt").” Wa-pedia says: “Common for younger men (sometimes women). Sounds more refined than "ore".”
Given his use of “boku” and “kimi”, and the way he immediately apologizes and uses “ne” a lot, Marco seems friendly and casual yet polite.
~~~
Given all of this… My very precursory translation would be something like:
“Oh dear! My partner here was clearing a pretty wide path! Really, we’re so sorry, you guys!”
Partner here...could be a traveling companion or a husband~ Either way, it’s quite obvious that Marco and Oliver are close! But if you are reading this and found something that I’ve grossly misinterpreted... Please don’t hesitate to tell me! Like I said, I’m not fluent in Japanese at all...
