Can you put some thoughts on buggy and his crew relationship? I noticed people think of them as uncaring about their captain, what do you think? Why would they follow him? Talking about the ogs not the worshippers

absolutely i can!

…though i’m afraid there’s not much to say. mohji and cabaji, our two named officers on the crew, are simple opponents for our heroes to beat in orange town, and that’s about as seriously as the story ever takes a buggy pirate crewman. unlike buggy, who zigzags between being a joke and being a character with real depth, these guys are pretty consistently jokes.

that said, taking a serious look at them, i think buggy found a crew that’s a lot like him, for good and ill.

they’re fully bought in on the romanticism of the captain-crew bond, and of bonds of friendship forged over a meal at sea. just look at their brief appearance at the start of the impel down arc: they bought an eternal pose that points to impel down! the whole crew is on their knees in tears thinking of buggy and ace awaiting execution… they want to do something about it! there must be something they can do!!

but oof, those sea kings sure are… real big…

and when alvida flatly tells them they’ll never make it, that even if they could, impel down is impregnable, and in any case she’s not going to let them use the big top to do it… they back down. still tearful, but now it’s “we’ll never forget you!” “see you in the next life!” tears. they know their limits, and beating alvida, to say nothing of whatever else awaits them, is beyond those.

and those limits never really change as the series goes on! so they give in and give up earlier and earlier, each time an obstacle appears in their path.

this crew values strength, but they don’t have much interest in doing the work to increase their strength, either as individuals or as a crew. they’d rather ride on a stronger person’s coattails, and call that person “captain.” buggy’s ‘growth’ as a pirate is a bit of a mirror image to that, actually—he’s getting stronger and stronger subordinates (or “subordinates,” as the case may be), but not really getting stronger himself.

buggy’s crew follows him eagerly and loyally, but that camaraderie doesn’t really extend to one other when worse comes to worst. they watch with fear, but no protests, when buggy targets one of their own for destruction—knowing that one wrong word could put them in that same position. is it so surprising that they’d turn that attitude on buggy himself, when former warlords come calling?

so yeah, i can understand where the ‘uncaring’ perspective comes from. they’re quick to give up (and to be fair, buggy would often also like to give up, but people around him keep misunderstanding his intentions), and that includes giving up on buggy when things get tough.

but what else are they supposed to do, get stronger? that’s literally the greatest swordsman on the planet, how is cabaji supposed to get on his level? ridiculous. at least if he keeps his head down he gets to be middle management at cross guild.

Polar bears have 42 teeth, and Bepo knows it! (That was a piece about Law, Bepo, Penguin and Shachi on Swallow Island).

I didn't write so much this year, but maybe always some variation of 'canon divergence'. I do have a 'national geographic hearts' or equivalent tag.

I'll take this as comment threads. That way it excludes my replies. It seems that I updated a one shot collection: Bepo's Drabble and One Shot Collection, and that has 15 chapters and 16 comment threads, but none on the drabble I posted (all the other chapters were posted 2019).

Heart PIrates Week, 2023 has 9 chapters (they're drabbles/ficlets. Don't get your hopes up :D!) and so 15 comment threads.

Taxi, which is actually a 2018-2019 story, but I re-uploaded a missing chapter last year, has 14 comment threads, and I actually uploaded that missing chapter due to some lovely comments I received this year.

For one shots, Bioluminescent Hearts is the top with 9 comment threads.

- His name is italian for puppet, but he pronounces it incorrectly and insists it’s the correct way to say his name if anyone else points it out and says he’s wrong.

- He’s not from Italy, obviously. Goes to show. But Ash imagines he knows a bit of italian. (“Not enough Italian to say his name right.” - Katie.)

- Fantoccio has a pet shark named Sharkspeare! Mentioned in the song at the line “‘Cause Sharkspeare’s looking mean!”

- Fantoccio has to make all his own props, set pieces, clothes, etc in the theatre.

- Would never smoke, and would hate being around it/people who’re doing it actively.

- Fantoccio was made by Ash as a fan OC for the game, and this (as far as I’m aware) is what got them hired onto the game, cause Katie loved their ideas so much.

A laugh tale

Let's talk One Piece for a bit.

There's this long running meme in the community that the One Piece is gonna be something like: "The treasure is the friendships you made along the way." and Oda coming out and confirming that the One Piece is a physical thing.

Why do people make fun of that though? That IS the entire point of the story.

When Luffy was asked by Rayleigh why he wanted to be pirate king and he said "The pirate king is the most free person in the world." That was just some bullshit he made up to justify his decision.

Don't believe me?

What criteria would you recruit someone for any goal? Their capability in achieving that goal, right? How does Luffy recruit his teammates? Is it Power? Intellect? Navigation? More numbers? No. He only has one criteria: he has to like them.

When you see Luffy's childhood, you learn his greatest fear: being alone. He doesn't like being lonely, and clings to Ace and Sabo because of it. He forms a bond with them because he grew up lonely, and lives a happy life with them on his island. What makes Luffy decide he wants to be pirate king? Is it wealth, or power, or even the freedom he claimed it is? No. Why did he really decide to leave in order to become pirate king?

Because Ace left him in order to become pirate king.

Why did Luffy say he wanted freedom?

Because Sabo left him in order to gain freedom.

Luffy likes his journey because he made a family of his crew.

Here's the thing:

Each of his crew has their own separate goal, and when they finish it they will no longer have a reason to stay.

At the end of Luffy's journey, each of his friends will leave him.

Zoro has beaten Mihawk and become the greatest swordsman.

Sanji has found all blue.

Nami has made a map of the world.

Usopp has become a brave warrior.

Chopper has cured all incurable diseases.

Robin has discovered all the secrets she wished.

Brook has met Laboon.

Franky has seen the Sunny's journey to the end.

Jimbei has made Luffy pirate king.

At the end of his journey, Luffy stands alone. The title "Pirate King" on his name. The One Piece in his hand. All the freedom he could ask for.

Laughing hysterically.

The journey gave him everything he wanted. The destination took it all away.

Not sure why so many people are getting nostalgic over Claire's at the moment but if you'd like to hear my personal Claire's ear piercing story here it is.

I'm 40 years old so I grew up in peak '90s mall culture. Claire's was a standard stop on any mall visit along with The Rave, Auntie Anne's, and the sketchy arcade. Despite the ubiquity of Claire's and its cheap ear piercing, I never got my ears pierced until I was... probably 15 or maybe 14. I don't know how I escaped it for so long; most of my girl friends had their ears pierced either as an infant or at least before they were tweens. I suspect it was a combination of me being a little nonbinary baby who didn't want to wear earrings in both ears but couldn't articulate why, so I never asked for them; the fact that my mom was thrifty and never offered; and my grandmother's penchant for clip-on earrings, since she'd also never gotten her ears pierced. I think when she was growing up in the 1920s it was seen as slutty? Anyway IF I was required to wear earrings for a fancy occasion there were plenty of grandma's sitting around the place.

But when I was 14 or 15, I was at the mall with my father. I don't remember why we were at the mall together. We rarely did anything together, and even now are not especially close. I vaguely remember my childhood best friend being there too. We must have been waiting for someone or something (maybe a movie at the attached theater?) and had some time to kill.

I think my dad must have offered to buy us some earrings we were examining at one of the kiosks, because I remember having to explain to him that I didn't have pierced ears. My dad famously misremembered things about me, like thinking I'd had braces when it was my older brother, not me, who needed them. He was shocked. He must have assumed I'd gotten them pierced at some point, but I told him no, it never happened. He offered to pay for the piercing at Claire's right then and there.

I don't know if I can explain how it felt, that offer. I was largely ambivalent about piercings. I knew, as most '90s kids did, that there was a Gay Ear that some guys wore earrings in, but no one seemed to agree which one it was. I have a visceral memory, down to knowing exactly which seat I was in, when a kid in the elementary school lunchroom got a cheap clip on pirate earring stuck on his earlobe and was mercilessly taunted for it being on the Gay Ear. I both wanted piercings so I could figure out which of my ears, if any, were gay. I simultaneously didn't want anyone putting holes in me. I craved visibility and invisibility in equal measure. I wanted to do something with my dad, since we never did things together. I didn't want to spend my own money on ear piercing, which my father spoke of like some inevitable event. I wanted to talk to my best friend about all this alone even though I knew she would not understand.

I ended up getting my ears pierced at Claire's that day. The 18 year old cashier who was manning the piercing gun made one puncture slightly off center compared to the other. I picked out a pair of cubic zirconia studs, which I thought weren't as girly as the others. After the piercings healed I started wearing earrings pretty much every day and amassed a huge collection of them. I did that up until I came out a few years ago.

I don't wear earrings often anymore but when I do it's usually just one dangly transguy-esque piece or a single hoop. I put it in the same ear that the kid in the lunchroom did. I haven't thought about my father in relation to my piercings for a very long time, until recently, when the Claire's memes reminded me. I think there's probably a lot of pop psychology mud to dig through there if someone cared to. I don't.

My father and I talk a couple times a year now, usually brokered by my mom. He has pierced ears, by the way, three in each ear. I don't remember when that happened. I'd like to think it was around the time my parents got divorced. I'd like to think it was circa 1997. I'd like to think it happened the way I know it didn't, in a way that even our combined shit memories couldn't conjure: that we both got gunned at the Claire's at the mall, ears red and puffy, before getting a cinnamon sugar pretzel to split. It didn't happen that way, but god I wish it had.

"Captain?"

"Wang Pangzi, my best First mate, what brings you here this fine evening?" The evening wasn't particularly fine, though the storm that has buffetted their sails all morning had finally passed over them. Wang Pangzi was of course not just the best, but also Captein Hei Xiazi's only first mate, though Pangzi wasn't about to point that out. The captain might get ideas, and appoint a Second First Mate or something equally daft.

Captain Hei Xiazi lowered the spy-glass from his one good eye, and faced Pangzi. Pangzi knew this was just the captain being polite, because with one eye he really only needed... hang on.

The Blind Captain was feared across the seven seas, though the name wasn't quite correct. He still had one good eye, having lost the other in some way. Depending on who told the story he'd lost that eye to a giant be-tentacled sea monster (according to the captain himself). Ship rumours had it he'd lost the eye when he won his famous sea battle, his one ship the Flower of the Sea versus one ship or possibly one whole fleet of the East India Trading company. The ladies in their various ports swore he'd lost the eye in a duel for his true love (though this lover's identity was unknown). Wang Pangzi personally suspected the Captain may have been born with a bad eye, because he never seemed to have had any other name than 'Hei Xiazi'. That's what Pangzi had thought up until some moments ago.

"Captain, wasn't your bad eye your left?" The question escaped him before he could think better of it. In the blood-red light of the post-storm sun Captain Xiazi blinked twice in confusion (with his left, apparently functional??, eye). Then he grinned his most worrying grin: the one that spelled bad news, the one that made ships surrender as soon as they saw the feared Blind Captain. The one that had graced his face that morning, as he'd sailed them into that blasted storm, because the Captain had pronounced the weather 'not hardly that bad, Pang-ye, don't fret so much'.

"Aye, so it is!" His captain answers, like Pangzi has asked if it's sunset. Then Hei Xiazi takes off his hat, rearranges his eye patch from his right eye (also functional??) to his left, puts his hat back on, and turns back to watching the sea. "What did you need me for?"

If his captain wishes to act like nothing happened, then who is Pangzi to argue? He'd like to keep his skin in one piece, thanks. "Err, I came to relieve you Captain- Cook says assumin' no more storms surprise her dinner'll be ready soon."

"Great!" The captain pronounced, and passed his spy glass to Pangzi, and with it the shift. Pangzi quickly snuck a look through the glass, but all seemed perfectly ordinary. "All this sea-staring makes a man hungry, huh?"

Pangzi couldn't help but wonder if that sea-staring might not be less hungry work without the eye-patch, but he's not fool enough to voice that to his captain.

Reading "One Piece" for the first time: Part 9 Having wrap up in the village after the fight with the Eugenicist Fish Man was good. Kudos man! I was enjoying the lovable quintet sailing off after the mayhem, it's always better than whatever methamphetamine charged crayon lunacy our author has concocted. Here we have essentially a Dungeons and Dragons party in town, and that makes for some great character moments. The Idiot wants to see where his hero was executed, The Himbo wishes to buy some more gear from the merchants, the Cartographer with a Brain Cell is getting some pretty outfits and materials (happy to see her in a good mood, to be honest), Meme in Progress is adorable and finding eggs on sale, good on him; and the Giga Chad finds a fish which he ropes the Meme in Progress into bringing home. See, these interactions feel natural and- Oh FUCK ME, the Cringe Master "Dracule Mihawk" is reintroduced being vague and edgy and "oh so cool" in the way that only my mate I (and I think everyone else) had when I was 14 thinks is awesome. Fuck this guy, he's like a jumpscare every time I think I'm enjoying this. Anyway, all that bimbling about town is neat, it doesn't quite feel like spinning wheels until the next purple-tinted kaleidascope of stupidity comes along (though it really is); and our Himbo even meets a woman who looks like Uryu from "Bleach". They bond a bit, threaten to make "Bleach" interesting by having this deep-fried dumbass show up in it (alas, no such luck), and part ways after picking up some cursed swords by passing a Charisma check and the DM just going "fuck it". Gotta be honest, I did not expect the "kick off nonsense" to be the return of the Murder Clown and the Club Lady I had completely forgotten about. Where did she find a Magic Fruit? Are they sold in street stalls? Do you ask the author nicely to get one? Was it buried in the club she carries? Not sure how to feel about the "she's hot now" fat joke, but do like that the joke to her is "I'm just as hot as I always was and the only thing missing is my freckles", that was okay. Anyway, I could watch 20 chapters of just Meme in Progress and Giga Chad trying to carry a fish in a hurry, and it was generally pretty funny having everybody rally to come and save The Idiot from being executed by a vengeful Murder Clown ... That was a sentence I had to write. Only OH NO! The 3 way pirate orgy is interrupted by the arrival of an actually pretty cool character I would have loved when I was 14: "Smoker", who smokes a pair of blunts at all times and turns into mist which (no joke) was a character I concocted when I was 13. He and Girl Uryu rush to action, there's panic and mayhem, but then we get... Look, I know that the Idiot is going to escape, I know that he's the main character, but you decided upon a literal act of fucking God to write your way out of this corner, man? You're, well I'm not going to say "better" than this, but certainly wilder. Couldn't you have had, I don't know, Meme in Progress saw the support beams away like a Looney Toon? The Himbo cut a blade with his blade? Cartographer with a Brain Cell bribe some frogs men to brick in the clown? Those were just 3 random ideas I came up with typing this, and they are all better and more sensical than "lightning strike hits the guillotine" (which is my new "Iron Maiden" album); which is really ruining an otherwise dope segment where various pirate groups converge in absolute fucking chaos and we get Captain Cheech and Chong trying to stop them with his raw edge. I like that silly brawl, that madness of varying motivations and grudges, it's a pity about the lightning. ... Another sentence I had to write. This series will be the death of me.
