Batman #354 (1982)
It is a TRAGEDY that this is the only real Hugo ~outfit~ we got in all of Gerry Conway's run. During most of this run he was either A. in the batsuit or B. pretending to be a ghost so he was in the outfit he "died" in (shirtless) or just completely naked for honestly no fucking reason other than he's just Like That. And I'm obviously not complaining about any of that, but Hugo was always such an outfit haver going all the way back to his first appearance. This man was always wearing the most deranged things. His hideous wardrobe is one of my absolute favorite things about him and I'm genuinely shocked how consistent the writing and the art was about that up until after Prey, when everyone at DC seemingly forgot all about it over night and started putting him in the most boring outfits known to mankind. Even worse when they started putting him in labcoats and calling it a day. The only time Hugo ever wore a labcoat during all of Pre-Crisis was when he was disguised as Dr. Todhunter. Labcoats were clearly never his style. Anyway, imagine an alternative timeline where Hugo would've had a bigger role in Conway's run and we would've gotten like 5 insane Hugo outfits illustrated by Don Newton. Perhaps even,,,,, a skimpy little maid outfit,,,,, with cat ears,,,,, please,,?
#hugo strange#one of my favorite pictures of hugo#this is literally the only time during conway's run we truly see him be 'off'#(i'm not sure if that's the right word for it)#but i mean that he's just kinda chilling in this one#just watching the show#always wondered who was driving that car#probably one of his robots#he wasn't using henchmen anymore at this point#you know i really like that the car is actually a car that i can imagine hugo having#it's very much his style#really appreciate the attention to detail here#because i was just thinking about jerry's car in batman shadow of the bat 37#and i'm sorry but he would NOT have a bright red car

I agree with you about the ridiculous book titles but I don't think the ones you mention are so great. Like what's so good about themš
hiii šš» I apologize for this long answer. This is so serious for me lol I could talk about it for hours.
I think Giovanni's Room is a perfect title. As I said, it's short and evocative, and I think it's also mysterious but not that mysterious. You don't know what's up with the room in question but you can gather, for example, that this guy Giovanni is Italian, otherwise the name would be John or something, so for sure his Italian identity will be relevant. You have to assume thereās intention behind something as significant as a main characterās name. Also, and more importantly, there's no last name attached to Giovanni so it suggests intimacyābeing on a first name basis. It lets you know that whoever tells the story is close to Giovanni; for sure close enough to have been inside his room. Name and last name creates a sense of distance and formality, or it suggests the person is 'important' or special; preternatural like Dorian Gray, famous like that woman Evelyn Hugo (probably, I haven't read it). But just āØGiovanni⨠... you can tell it's going to be a first person account of the events by someone who knows Giovanni very intimately. But obviously Iāve already read it and my interpretation is biased. Nothing about the title guarantees it'll be a first person account. This is just what I mean by evocative; it makes me theorize and read into it...
Now, just Giovanni, like Emma or Carrie or Rebecca, wouldn't work becauseāand this you find out once you read the novel but the title is already telling youāthe room is the main character; it's the metaphor. But I wanted to mention those single name titles just to say I don't like them lol. I get them but I think they don't really work nowadays. A recent example I can think of is Eileen. Crickets, right? Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh. It's a good novel though.
And I also don't like "[Name] [Last Name]" titles very much:Ā - Anna KareninaĀ - Jane EyreĀ - David CopperfieldĀ - Oliver TwistĀ
As I said, full names give a sense of distance (imo!), BUT those I mentioned make sense because the novels span the lifetime of the character. Of course the title of a person's life should be their name, and at least it's not something like The Unbelievable Life of David Copperfield, which would be so silly. I think full name titles had their time too. Just Evelyn Hugo would be crickets but it doesn't mean its original title is any better lolĀ
Giovanni's Room is perfect because I think "[Name]ās [Noun]" is a good title formula: - Charlotteās Web - Enderās Game - Sophieās Choice
Adding an adjective to any of these would truly fuck them up. Imagine if it was Giovanni's Mysterious Room⦠flop! It was already mysterious. Or Giovanni's Peculiar Room, also a flop and an awful sounding adjective.Ā
You have to be very particular about the adjective to make "[Name]ās [Adjective] [Noun]" work.
Howl's Moving Castle is a perfect example of a good one because it could have been something like Howl's Magical Castle, right? But that sounds basic. The chosen adjective, Moving, couldn't be more perfect.
The other title I mentioned in my post is The Bell Jar. Just picture a bell jar; something so delicate that can trap or protect or display or contain. You can already tell the metaphor game is going to be strong.Ā Also, its formula is my favorite ever: "The [Noun]": - The Trial - The Metamorphosis - The Waves - The TunnelĀ - The Goldfinch
This formula is serious business for me. I think it's perfect. Short and so sure of itself. They demand to be taken seriously. I see them and I feel reassured that the author is confident and clear about their work.Ā
"The [Adjective] [Noun]" is good too but it really has to need that adjective:Ā - The Virgin SuicidesĀ - The Savage Detectives
I love "[Adjective] [Noun]" ā Short yet compelling. Just two words so you can have them tattooed on the back of you ankles or something: - White TeethĀ - Wuthering Heights - Sharp Objects - Invisible Monsters (Chuck Palahnuikās titles are always a hit with me. Short and straightforward; they come across as very cool and crude, Fight Club, Choke, Snuff, and then he delivers cool and crude. The 3 titles below are by authors with a similar vibe to Palahnuik, and look at those titles⦠chef's kiss) - Exquisite CorpseĀ - American Psycho - Mysterious Skin
I also love "[Noun] and [Noun]" ā To contrast, to compare, to complement each other, whatever it is it's always a hit. The alliteration in both Jane Austen's titles is more poetic than whatever long wordy title you can think of: - Pride and PrejudiceĀ - Sense and Sensibility - War and PeaceĀ - Sons and Lovers - Crime and PunishmentĀ
ā Now, the ones I consider flops no matter what. The long ācreativeā ones that come across as eager and insecure and make me roll my eyes.
Anything that tries to sound like The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Also these wretched formulas:
"The [Adjective] [Noun] of [Fuckass Name + Last Name]": - The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - The First Fifteen Lives of Harry AugustĀ - The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender (Two adjectives! Get out of here!)
"A [Noun] of [Noun] and [Noun]": - A Song of Ice and Fire - A Court of Thorns and Roses - A Book of Spirits and Thieves
"The [Personās Job/Occupation] [Relative]" ā The relative is usually a wife or a daughter: - The Surgeon's Daughter - The Time Traveler's WifeĀ - The Zookeeper's Wife - The Shopkeeper's Daughter
"All The + [Some Bullshit]": - All the Bright PlacesĀ - All the Light We Cannot See - All the Dangerous Things - All the Colors of the Dark
"Where the + [Some Bullshit]": - Where the Crawdads Sing - Where the Red Fern Grows - Where the Dead Sit Talking
"This Is How + [Some Bullshit]": - This Is How You Lose the Time War - This Is How It Always Is - This is How You Lose Her
"We Are All + [Some Bullshit]": - We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - We Are All the Same in the Dark - We Are All Birds of Uganda - We Are All Made of Molecules
I also don't vibe with titles that instruct you to do something: - Go Tell the Bees That I Am GoneĀ - Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (good novel though!) - Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters - Go Tell It on the Mountain (adding one by the author of my beloved Giovanni's Room so you know I'm serious about this lol)
š To finish my rant on a more positive note, there are always exceptions, and I do like some poetic titles: - Tender Is the Night
One of my favorites and I haven't read it, I just like how it sounds. That would be "[Adjective] is the [Noun]". I don't know if there are more like this. I like that it's taken from a poem but it's not too wordy.Ā
And the following are all by John Steinbeck. His title game was insane! And they are all references, which shows it can be done with grace and measure: - East of Eden ā biblical reference - The Grapes of Wrath ā lyrics from hymn which references a bible passage - In Dubious Battle ā from Paradise Lost - Of Mice and Men ā this one could go in the [Noun] and [Noun] category but the preposition adds a little something imo, and it's also taken from a poem by Robert Burns.
Anyway, I hope this wasn't a bore! š

Hugo and Vivian
So I finished the bangboo event yesterday for the main story and completed all the quests today, so now it's time to talk about what was the most interesting to me about it.
It was Hugo and Vivian.

They finally showed up!
Hugo's bangboo is named Robin, and he also speaks the human language instead of speaking bangboo as well!

That's nice to know. Makes me laugh that Hugo has a bangboo named Robin, since he's part of a band of thieves, reminds me of Robin Hood, pretty sure it's intentional.
Also why do I call Vivian, Vivian? Because it seems to be her name if said name is written all over her parasol. I'm not even kidding.

Welcome Vivian, that's the fanciest parasol I've seen in a while. Really pretty.
Hugo is apparently a collector. Though he seems to prefer objects of historical and sentimental value more than actual perceived value in money.

I wonder what's the reason behind it, but still, cool.
Also Vivian seems to be hoping for Phaethon to show up or something?

My poor girl is given the title "Strange Young Lady", she's not strange she's adorable, a real little gothic doll. <3 Well, she is slightly taller than Belle but that's probably her shoes giving her an extra inch more than anything else.

Still, she's so precious. I love her your honor. I also see she has some streaks of white/silver in her hair, nice.
I must wonder what she and Hugo have for relationship, are they just friends, business partners, teammates only, like brother and sister or father and daughter like, or boss and employee, master and servant??? I just cannot see them as being a romantic couple.
But also apparently Hugo is the first person in the story to actually pull one on Lycaon, being able to steal what he wanted before Lycaon could intervene, pretty cool. Sending a letter to tell them about the future thieft, only to steal it before the finale, that was awesome. We probably helped with that by accident but still I find it funny that Lycaon didn't think about it before that it could be stolen before the winner was even decided. But he doesn't seem to surprised by it but still. Good one from Hugo.
Hugo is a thief but he also still seems nice and not a bad person, according to Astra.

I guess we'll see in a future patch and hopefully after the Obol Squad and Pulchra's events.
I am skipping everyone else just to get Hugo and Vivian, so no Ellen, no Evelyn, no Qingyi, no Anby, no Trigger and no Pulchra, just Hugo and Vivian. I need those 2 badly. If Pulchra is A rank, I will probably be able to get her on the normal channel. But I need to stay strong for Hugo and Vivian, these 2 alone can keep me going for a while.
Also I'm gonna change my avatar for Vivian's picture in 2 minutes. ^^ I just really love her so very much. <3
Hugo can finally complete my holy trinity of himself, Harumasa and Billy, my 3 favorite characters in the game. Seth and Miyabi both tie for second place. Vivian might join my holy trinity to make it a quartet. XD

I absolutely despise Enjolras (Les Mis)
Honestly heās so annoying and the only he ever talks abt is revolution and France and literally all his dumb revolution does is get his friends killed. Itās also hos fault javert dies because if he hadnāt had him tied up he never would have met valjean again. Plus heās always yelling at Marius when Marius is the only sane one who gets anywhere near the barricade and the whole revolution thing and the only reason he gets shot in the first place is bc Enjolras forced him into his whole France cult. And on the topic of France, Hugo said it was his girlfriend or some shit. Idfk, the guy is absolutely ridiculous and Iām glad he dies bc I donāt think I could handle it if he stayed alive or was a major character. At least I can enjoy the book and/or musical whenever heās not there. Also some ppl picture him with long hair?!? Heās a man??! Idk why the gay ppl have to ruin characters by screwing around and messing up their appearances and make them look gay (not that he was tolerable in the first place but still). Really what should have happened is everyone should have left him at the barricade on his own so he could get shot and die and all the good characters would live. Another thing is heās so rude and disrespectful to gavroche! The poor kid went along with his ridiculous revolution and he wouldnāt even let him have a gun to protect himself. Plus he was discriminating against gavroche for being younger which isnāt even his fault?!?! Maybe if Enjolras gave gavroche a gun he would have had something else to do than collect bullets and he wouldnāt have died. And Enjolras didnāt have the right to complain in the first place because he was rich so if you think abt it he was just bossing around children and the poor because heās a privileged asshole of a control freak. Also is it just me or does he look like a knock off of the one blonde guy from liberty kids? Anyways itās pissing me off just thinking abt him so Iāll end this here.Ā
Ā (This is a joke, I love enj, heās my favorite, happy april fools day lol)

Hey there lovelies! Wow, two recaps in one night! That's overkill! (JK I'm so behind, lol). I know we're deep into the holidays now, and some of the big ones have passed us by. I hope you've gotten a chance for some down time. I know this time of year can be tough for various reasons, and especially this year given the political climate around the world. Please hear me when I say, you are so very loved. Whether you had a good holiday, or a rough one. Whether you were swamped and busy, or got a break finally and got some rest. You are SO very very loved, no matter what you accomplished today, or this month, or this year. I am seeing so many new folks poking their heads out in the fando-- which is absolutely lovely to see-- and if you're just joining us for the first time, or have been in the fandom since Day One of S1 or anywhere in between-- you too are loved. We are Crew For Life, as Samba says, for a reason. This show brought so many of us together because of it's love, and it's light, and it's fond family. We all care about you so much crew, please remember that. It's time for me to sneak off to bed, and hopefully I'll see you soon lovelies, going to be posting the David Christmas specials in the next edition.
Sending love your way <3

Veilguard Appreciation Week 2025 - Day 5
I think this is my favorite entry so far, it's been a lot of fun to write. Not to mention it feels like stretching my muscles before Bellara Appreciation Week. (coming soon to a spooky forest near you).
There are some minor spoilers for Bellara's personal quest, but it's just a mention in passing and mostly from the earlier parts.
Today's prompts for the @veilguard-appreciation-week:
Arlathan Forest | Wisdom | "Sorry! Just breaking things!"
The weather was absolutely beautiful. Just warm enough for a comfortable walk through the forest, the sun rising high in the clear sky, a soft breeze ruffling the golden-red leaves and the birds sang in the distance. Truly a picture of perfect bliss if one didnāt look too closely, of course. As Hugo discovered with each visit, Arlathan had a knack for seeming completely normal while being anything but that. He still couldnāt get used to the people-shaped trees on the trail. The suspiciously limb shaped protrusions peeking out of trunks, rocks falling from empty sky, fade anomalies exploding if one stumbled too close. And the unending hum of wildlife everywhere. The sensation of someone or something always watching.
City-raised Hugo was used to background noise, but not of this type. Despite Bellaraās assurances and Davrinās teasing he still didnāt feel comfortable in nature. Especially alone. But Bellara was gone from the Lighthouse when he reached her workshop during his morning rounds and heād rather brave the forest than regret not checking up on her. She seemed perpetually worried these days. Hugo didnāt blame her for it at all. He was rather sure heād take it much worse if a sibling he thought dead would suddenly pop up right in front of his face. And if said sibling would also be somewhat bound or cooperating with an ancient being⦠it would probably end up in a knife fight. That Bellara wanted to help her brother instead of condemning him was admirable all on its own.Ā
Much to Hugoās relief he managed to reach the Veil Jumper safehouse without falling through any Fade Tears, getting eaten or turning into a tree. Quite a success for as far as he was concerned. He made it down the crumbling stairs, skipping two or three steps at a time and entered the vault. Right as the doors closed behind him, the ground rumbled ominously, a few tiny rocks and a couple of roots dropping from the ceiling. Hugo hung on to the door, blinking slowly trying to readjust his eyes to the dim light.Ā
As the details of the room became distinguishable he moved further inside following the sound of metallic clinks and clanks, and exasperated huffs. He could already see Bellara hunched over a shining golden relic when she shifted something on it and the whole vault shook violently. Bellara crouched down covering her head from falling debris and Hugo had to save himself from becoming a pancake by a desperate roll forward escaping a massive rock released from right above his head. A dumb, wide grin split his face when Bellara spotted him.Ā
āYou sweep me off my feet today, Bel!āĀ
āOh! Oh, Rook. Are you alright?āĀ She jumped up to help him up and tried to dust off his armor. āI am so sorry! I didnāt see you! But you know. Itās just me! Breaking things, you know?āĀ
āDonāt worry about it. Itās on me anyway, should have been prepared for the roof falling on meā Hugo joked with a big smile refusing to leave for even a moment. Bellara smiled too, a bit shy, a bit concerned. She walked back over to the relic and carefully placed a battery back inside.
For a while they remained in silence, Hugo leaning on a table slightly to the side, Bellara tinkering with the calmed artifact and making notes in her notebook. Hugo couldnāt help but notice the teal leather cover with a little dragon symbol pressed into it. Neve must have been spoiling her again.Ā
āSooo⦠how are you here?ā Bellara finally risked asking, her eyes firmly fixed on whatever she was trying to repair in the relic.
āCouldnāt find you in the Lighthouse. Made an educated guess to come to Arlathanā Hugo shrugged crossing his arms āThen I found Irelin in the Jumpersā camp and she told me you came to the safehouseāĀ
āOhhh. This makes sense.ā Bellara smirked to herself as the stubborn part finally relented and fell into placeĀ āDo you need any help?ā She looked up finally, playing with the rim of her gloves.Ā
āNot really. Just wanted to see how youāre doing.ā Hugo scratched the back of his neck. He didnāt really have a good reason to come over. Didnāt think of a convincing half-truth either. āSee if maybe I could be of any assistance actually? You know hurl some insults at ancient artifacts, maybe get into a brawl with a spiritā he laughed waving his hands around as if preparing for a strike. Bellara giggled and it was honestly the best thing he heard the whole day.Ā
āI donāt think you could win a fist fight with a spirit.āĀ
āI could try cheating!ā he offered and Bellara just shook her head going back to work. Soon she started explaining what she was doing. It was an unending stream of exclamations and phrases that Hugo struggled to follow. Heās fairly sure he knows maybe one in five words she used. But he nodded along and tried asking questions. It felt⦠right to be this way. He should make a point to come with her more often, he realized.Ā
āYou know, I think Iām actually doneā Bellara beamed wiping her hands into a towel hung around her belt. She looked rather proud ā and since the artifact hadnāt caused the cave to collapse, Hugo was inclined to agree.
When they finally got out of the safe house the sun was already hanging low on the horizon. More importantly Bellara looked a lot less sad than she did before. And that was the best Hugo could have hoped for.Ā

Part Seven of A Safe Place for Us Series
My entire masterlist and blog are for readers 18+ MDNI. I do not consent to my work being used in AI, recommended on TikTok, borrowed or plagiarized.
Summary: Decisions about where to live are made and Dieter starts the ādaddyā jokes. Sort of. The pair discuss states of health.
Warnings: Domestic conversations, various dirty talk (utter filth - Iām only 20% sorry), talk of children, talk of health conditions and disparities, feelings, unprotected p in v, aftercare
Word Count: about 2.1k
Notes: The daddy and momma thing wonāt be that much of a thing. I tried it, it was funny but wonāt be a recurring joke. I promise though I do think if Dieter did stick to it, he would be insufferable š© The horror.
Main Masterlist/ Dieter Bravo Masterlist/ AO3 Link
A small bodega serves coffee, bagels, sandwiches and assording baked goods based on the day of the week. Itās near a top floor condo that Dieter and Aisha are looking at today. Itās two days after finding out the life changing news, the expectant parents are still looking at different places on Aishaās insistence. She made sure that the OBGYN she saw sent her tests and information to her home doctor, though she was considering moving here. The writer is curious about living in New York most of the time and being in Los Angeles when needed. She enjoys the thought of just taking the subway to a broadway show or the museum. Dieter is already talking about a house outside of the city, something he hasnāt mentioned before. The realtor is as confused as Aisha is but they both look through some listings until Dieter says it was the one he dreamed about. The home in question is a brick with a white roof and a yellow mailbox out front.
āItās cute but itās not in the city.ā Thatās Aishaās response but Bravo convinces her to sleep on it and that they can talk about it tomorrow. The small meal consisting and sandwiches, water, tea and two pieces of chocolate cake makes her want this condo more.
Even when they get back to the hotel and attempt to relax, she still thinks about the high ceilings that would be excellent for natural light, working on some drafts and maybe watching Dee paint. That night, despite knowing that sheās only two or three months along at best, Dieter insists on laying his head on her belly. Itās in a series of moments that he never thought would come to pass. Humming ātwinkle twinkle little star,ā he hears laughter that heās become accustomed to hearing much more often.
āI liked the place near the little bodega. You could paint there and I can watch while I write. Plus I donāt know about maintaining a yard Dee.ā Aishaās fingertips massage his scalp while he lets a a short purr inturrpting his song. āWeāll go see this brick house though, it might be too much room.ā
āNot too much room if we decide to have more children. Plus there will need to be room for Cookie.ā He looks up and she knows heās referring to his goat but he treats the pet like any dog or cat. Giggling, Aisha nods until she fully processes what heās said, āmore children.ā It was written in the contract they both signed. Sheād never pictured herself with more than one. It led to her next question,
āDieter how many children do you want to have? You know Iām-ā Bravo slides up the bed, shirtless and in his favorite Hugo Boss boxer briefs.
āI know, and itās your fault. Now Iām a father and think about giving our current bun other future buns to play with.ā The scruff of his patchy beard tickles her neck and then cheek as he peppers her neck and chest with kisses. āNow I get to call you sexy mama.ā
āDieter youāre so goofy.ā Aishaās hands runs along Dieterās soft sides, feeling his warm skin. āI donāt hate you calling me mama though. Iām not sure if Iāll get used to calling you daddy. It feels like a weird fanfic prompt.ā She releases a moan as Dieter moves between her legs and grinds his hips into hers.
āLet me hear it. Say, āgive it to me daddy.ā Just for me.ā He grins while he watchesās her eyebrows furrow from lifting her hips off the bed. His next line is cooed into her ear, āTell me that you want daddy to fuck you sexy mama. Feel how wet your for me with my baby inside of you.ā Dieter reaches down to slip out of his boxers and then raises the hem of Aishaās nightgown. He catches her scent and when he runs the head of his cock along her folds, sheās already soaked. āIāll keep the mother of my child wet, stuffed and happy. Itās what daddyās supposed to do, arenāt I?ā Aishaās response isnāt with words, she reached down and guides the head of Dieterās cock to her entrance and slides him in.
āYouāre right Dee. That is daddyās job. Give me daddyās thick dick so mama can milk it since I want my walls painted.ā Bravo doesnāt move his hips yet, he lets Aisha keep griding upward.
āFuck babyā¦so damn good. Definitely at least one more kid after this one. I wonāt be able to stay out of this pussy.ā He interlocks his hands with hers and gives slow shallow thrusts. Thereās no call times, no early appointments, just the two of them in their hotel room enjoying each otherās bodies. Thereās no rush at all. āYou only want the one or you open to more Aisha?ā He presses his chest to hers, not set on forcing her into the mattress yet. Her eyes flutter and she looks up at him. Dieterās watching her like he always does whenever they have sex, though recently there had been more slow sessions like this. Making love - that much Aisha is sure of.
āIām open to having another one, but letās see how this one goes. Iām not even past the first trimester. W-Wait, there Deeā¦again!ā She widens her legs to allow him deeper, heād found that extra sensitive spot within her fleshy canal and was hitting it with each slow stroke. She knew he wouldnāt go any faster, not right now. Bravo smirks a hits again twice before purposefully changing the angle to miss it and hear her hiss. He kisses her lips and ensure to hit it again to have her whine into his mouth.
āThatās fair Ai, and I think despite it being outside the city, youāll like those house. Weāll have room to grow into it.ā The smirk remains on his face as he waiting her out, he wants her to ask him to speed up, be rougher. Itās a game he may have started a few weeks ago. Dieter notes that Aisha is trying to release his hands and putting her feet flat into the matress to have him go deeper with his cock.
āYou enjoy making me ask. Itās mean, but fine. I want it harder Dee. Youāre supposed to be keeping mama satisfied arenāt you daddy?ā The giggle is from this wordplay he started, it isnāt bad just weird as he releases her hands and wraps the around the back of his neck.
āOf course sexy mama. Your wish is my command.ā Dieter winks as he takes a handful each of her ample hips beginning to piston into her, now with his goal of dipping her into the mattress. Her previous soft moans were replaced by deep groans and his grunts. They both climaxed quickly from their slow buildup and after washing up afterward laid in bed naked, facing each other under the blankets.
āThink we can put a pause on the mama and daddy thing? I gotta get used to that. It was weird.ā Aisha admits and Dieter agrees. She snuggles up next to him and he wraps his arms around her.
āI didnāt think youād play into it so hard.ā
āIām just glad you werenāt too serious about it.ā
āYou know what I am serious about though?ā Aisha looks up as Dieter draws some circles into her back. She tilts her head and hums waiting for an answer.
āBecause youāre worried about how this pregnancy can go and Iām worried about you, no matter where we live, weāre having a certified midwife checking in on you in addition to your follow up appointments. Itās non-negotiable.ā Itās a stipulation that Dieter had mentioned before as well. It isnāt that Aisha didnāt appreciate it, she did immensely. That he cared about her being healthy along with the baby, but to be watched in her own home. Well soon to be their home, it would be a bit much for her.
āTheyāll come for visits right? It wonāt be like a live in nurse, someone watching me 24/7 is too much Dee.ā Aisha attempts to get up and out of the bed to wash up but Dieter quickly rises with her and sits on the bed next to her.
āYou know itās not just because I have the money to do so right? Itās not a flex or something Aisha. Weāre both older, and even though I know you have a clean bill of health and so do I, so many things can go wrong. Itās dangerous.ā Aisha stands and walks to the bathroom and begins to wash up with Bravo nearly on her heels. āAre you listening to me?ā
āI hear you dammit!ā Her yell has her looking at Dieter surprised, both at him and herself. She didnāt expect to get so worked up over it. More than anyone, Aisha knows due to her research and appointments how dangerous pregnancy can be for any woman, let alone, a black woman and her first pregnancy is at age 35. Itās what she was cautioned against even though the only unhealthy thing about her was her weight. No other lifestyle risk factors. She finishes washing and cleans her hands before leaning against the counter, she canāt look at Dieterās face in the mirror, he looks hurt.
āI didnāt mean to yell Dee. I know that despite everything, my age and race puts me in the high risk category. I justā¦.ā She pulls him close and lays her head on his chest. āJust want to enjoy the pregnancy. It might be my only one, we donāt know. So just stay in the moment with me okay? I know thereās things we need to watch out for and I do love that youāre being this protective of me.ā She kisses his chest before rubbing his back, more to soothed herself than him while he cups the back of her head. āPlease letās just enjoy it.ā
āOkay. Iāll still worry though. I want to have you and the kid you know?ā Dieter kisses her forehead and they lay back down in bed to sleep for the night. Aisha is awake long after Dieterās called asleep still holding her, heād brought up fears that she was hoping sheād buried. Theyāre still creeping in the edge of her mind when the drive out to the brick house Dieter had found.
Itās large, six bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms with a large room downstairs with plenty of light that Aisha says would make a good mini-atelier for Dieter to paint in. She found herself an office next to the master bedroom which is the size of her current apartment. Dieter describes making it a comfy place for her to sleep and nest. He read about nesting online and figured it might be fun for Aisha to try in a few months. She laughs and shakes her head but between the beautiful yard with landscaping and a small garden she can try and not kill plants in and it being in a gated community with the neighbors spread out but not too far away. She agrees to buy the house, with Dieter putting both their names on it.
Driving back into the city and eating at a small outdoor cafe, Aisha asks something else thatās been on her mind, after Dieter settles next to her at the small table. He brought a shawl despite her already wearing a thick red sweater with her navy skirt and red converses. She wanted to wear them while she still could. Dieter is comfy in one of his rainbow sweaters, purple lakers shirts and jeans. He kisses her cheek while theyāre handed menus. āUm, how should we tell our families the news? Thereās a lot.ā Bravo laughs and so does Aisha knowing itās going to be an entire mess to sort after being seen out in the open like this.
āWeāll tell them together and one piece at a time.ā Is Dieterās answer after they order the soup of the day: French Onion with extra cheese and plenty of bread to dip.
Their joy makes for a beautiful picture that pops up all over social media and the news. The headline: Oscar Winner Dieter Bravo and his longtime friend writer Aisha Smith seen out and about in New York? Are the rumors true? Have they crossed the line between friends?
It seems neither of them has to break the initial news to their families, the world did that. Dieter and Aisha only had to answer the specifics of to what extend had their relationship changed, which they agree would be done when they were comfortable with doing so.

I love The Song of Achilles so much. Itās a rich retelling of the Iliad that makes the characters feel more human and less mythical. Iāve read both the Iliad and the Odyssey for college classes, but both felt detached and distant. Still interesting nonetheless, but I never connected with the mythical characters. Madeline Millerās novel on the other hand makes me feel for Achilles and Patroclus. Achilles is a classic Greek hero, but he has feelings and deeply loves Patroclus. Patroclus tells the story through his eyes, slightly rose-tinted but still so full of passion. He adores Achilles and Briseis, and thatās powerful. Readers donāt always get that from myths thousands of years old.
This book breaks me every time I read it. I know how the story ends and that it will forever be a tragedy, but itāll always sting and I keep coming back. Achilles is so flawed, morally gray. Thatās why I like him. Heās capable of killing people left and right without remorse, but heās also capable of loving fiercely. Patroclus is more relatable since heās written to feel like the odd one out, the scrawny outcast like in many modern YA tales. He's flawed too.
Itās also very important to tell LGBT+ stories. Some of my favorite books are in that category. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Picture of Dorian Gray (to name a classic), and many others are very impactful to me. These stories are rich, diverse, and ignite insight towards marginalized groups. We need books like these and thatās why I chose to reread The Song of Achilles in June, in Pride Month.
Also what are some books with ace/aro protagonists?
#the song of achilles#tsoa#pride#happy pride š#books#booklr#i want ace books because Iām ace#Iām technically aroace too because I rarely find romantic attraction except for fictional characters?

One thing about me is I will always respect a good villain gang when I see one and THIS gang! The gang of Merlin Academy running the shots! No exception. Rent. Was. Due! Disney, from here on out, if your teen villains do not look like these baddies who are serving seductive, poisonous cunt, Respectfully, Ion want it.
So letās run down the line. Letās take attendance.
Dara Renee said she looks cute as Ulyana, NOT HOT! OKAY GREEN! Look at her smile! First her daughter, now her sister, Ursulaās family has me in a chokehold and they are never letting me go (and I donāt want them to hehe). This look gives very much Ursula from Once Upon a Time vibes and I love it! So much! I wanna be part of her gang! Like, Ulyana, baby girl, what are you insecure of? I donāt care about Ursula anymore. I got Uma and I got Ulyana, I donāt want Ursula. Iām trying to keep it pg-rated, butā¦I would let her top me. I want her tentacles all over me, Iām so sorryā¦Iām not.
Hades has left the Underworld and he is looking sharp! I love leather. I love spikes. I love the whole punk persona! I have a punk persona! So I love the fact that me and Hades, one of my favorite villainsā¦Are the same. Exactly the same. I am going to find a studded leather jacket and choker so we can match. We also got similar taste in music, like Hades, letās be friends. Letās start a band. We can call ourselves āFire!ā
Queen Maleficent, Mistress of Darkness may be lurking in the back, but Iām seeing her. Now her horns look a little weird right now but Iām gonna wait for the official posters and pictures with better quality before I start to give my full judgement. But likeā¦yāall, sheās Maleficent, when have we ever had a Maleficent who doesnāt serve with looks, darkness, and attitude? Like, girl, come for Ulyana! Pull Hades! I expect you to use magic! I demand at least ONE Dragon transformation! DEMAND it!
Ulyana is the Captain here, jot that down, but Hook is still serving so letās have a conversation. Looks are clearly a strength in the Hooks family, so what do the girls look like? The men are handsome, so letās have the girls do some Justice please. His fit almost exactly replicated the cartoon and I love that. The only problem I have isā¦whereās the hat? The iconic red hat with the big feather? Disney, he better have that hat. Donāt be playing with me.
Morgieā¦heās giving kinda Carlos and Gil vibes. That is indeed a compliment. Now is his outfit as extravagantļæ¼ as the others? No. Is it still good and is he still killing the game? Absolutely. These VKs stay with the drip. Who else is looking good in a scarf? I donāt see anyone else wearing one! Now his mother is said to be the Morgana Le Fay in Sofia the First soā¦Is our dear Princess in the Descendants Universe lol? Is my girl enrolled in Auradon Prep? Is she with Hugo? Iām sorry, I just find this so funny, where is Enchancia on the Auradon map? Watch Morgie reference this in the movie, I just, I canāt!
One thing about villains is they will always be looking good and I will always be wanting to find a way to thrift their clothing. I canāt wait to see these looks with better qualities

to take your mind of the foreboding WH movie adaptation disaster: Are there actually some non-English gothic titles you would like to recommend?
ohhhhh, what a good ask!
now, i'm actually not that well-versed in the gothic genre as i'd like to be, and if anyone has more recs they're welcome to add them to my list. but still, let's begin with:
gaston leroux, le fantƓme de l'opƩra (+ andrew lloyd webber's musical - which is hugely popular, as it should be! - and i'd also recommend the 1925 silent movie with lon chaney. it's probably the most faithful film adaptation of poto... too bad for that ending tho. there's also a prequel/retelling book by susan kay called phantom, which is very good - but not flawless - except i heavily dislike christine's characterization in this one; you can always read until the counterpoint section and call it a day)
victor hugo, notre dame de paris + the musical adaptation by riccardo cocciante. it's in french, but i also enthusiastically rec the italian version - you can find both of them on yt!
so, besides these two super famous classics, there's the poem the demon by mikhail yuryevich lermontov. you can find an opera rendition of it by anton rubinstein.
speaking of opera, béla bartók's bluebeard's castle - aka a gorgeous adaptation of the fairy tale by the same name. this version is particularly excellent, and there are also a lot of good album recordings on spotify. musically-wise, tho, it's maybe not easily accessible to people who aren't already familiar with opera...?
charles gounod's faust (again, an opera!) and various non-english versions of the story, like goethe's. by goethe there's also the poem der erlkƶnig. here a beautiful musical rendition by franz schubert.
panna a netvor aka "the maiden and the monster", my favorite beauty&thebeast movie adaptation. it's a 1978 czechoslovak film, you can find it here on yt with eng subs. and idk if i would say it's gothic but there's also the jean cocteau 1946 film + another french one filmed in 2014 starring lƩa seydoux and vincent cassel.
fyodor dostoevesky, the double
carlos ruiz zafon, the shadow of the wind (which i enjoyed, but i wasn't personally crazy about, though)
it's not gothic - it's magical realism, actually - but fans of the genre would possibly like gabriel garcia marquez's one hundred years of solitude for its themes
again, not gothic (i've seen it labeled as "dark academia" but. for some people anything is ~dark academia, including dostoevesky and the picture of dorian gray, for some unfathomable reason), but i'd rec vita nostra + its sequel, assassin of reality, by ukrainian authors marina and sergey dyachenko. there's an english translation and an italian one for my mutualiani, plus a third and final book coming out in, maybe, 2025.
the cabinet of dr. caligari + the man who laughs starring conrad veidt (š³š) - the latter is an adaptation of the victor hugo's novel by the same name
for other movie recs, the original nosferatu + dario argento's suspiria (which has also a more recent remake by luca guadagnino of challengers fame)
fosca by igino ugo tarchetti. didn't read the novel, but i watched the musical adaptation by stephen sondheim, passion, here (and that's in english). again, idt if it's gothic or even gothic-adjacent but fosca's character has been compared and contrasted as a female version of the phantom of the opera by musical theatre fans, so. here it is.
now, for things i didn't personally watch/read so i can't vouch for them, but they seem all well-written/made nonetheless and belong to my unending list(s) of books to read/films to watch:
vampire hunter d. (anime)
john ajvide lindqvist, let the right one in (novel + movie adaptation)
marina enriquez, our share of the night + things we lost in fire (novel + short stories collection)
(mind you that these recs conflate a lot with the horror department. but i still think they could be interesting for gothic fans)
two book series that are written by english authors but i think they deserve more attention:
mervyn peake, gormenghast
jonathan l. howard, johannes cabal (which contains huge references to faust, dracula, and works by poe and lovecraft. the protagonist has also become one of my favorite characters of all time, i've fallen in love with him at first... page, i guess lol)
and that's it! again, if anyone has any other good rec, please feel free to add them!

Some of unpopular TTS opinions I have are:
1. I don't think Varian is that much of a fanāfavorite? I've seen fandoms where there was more focus on a character than with him, TTS fandom seems to love Rapunzel, Eugene and Cass more than him by just comparing likes or upvotes. There seems to be more content with him, but I explain it by how they give him interesting setāup in the show and not much screen times, so fans really wanted those ideas realized. In Vat7K Hugo seems to be more popular than Varian.
2. I loved Season 3 and I love it the most even if Season 1 is close. I don't really like season 1 and 2 filler but story episodes are favorites, in season 3 I love filler and half of story episodes. In Season 2 when I got to Great Tree episode I realised there was too much filler for me sadly, but I don't hate on Hookfoot and his episode when he met a mermaid was adorable, and the mermaid tears scene at the end was beautiful.
3. Now very controversial, but I dislike Cassandra because of some of her fans, any time I see hate on my favorite character I check the profile picture and it is always Cassandra (if there is any). She doesn't interest me as much as Varian and Rapunzel, and many people in the fandom (I personally encountered four, but there is probably more) think that if her character isn't close to me and I can't get her I must be young, while I am in midā20, tastes on characters are just subjective, or everyone would've always liked the same ones. Of course, being not interested in Cass means I watched episodes with her less times than her fans, and would make my takes on her appear less nuanced, like they like to say.
4. I am neutral on king Frederic and think he is very redeemable, but writers didn't have time for him so they went with memoryāerasing plot. I dislike how he is villified in the fandom (not counting fanfic, but general discussion).
1. I personally think varian is a fan favorite because itās popular for people to watch the show just for him, canāt blame them tho because varian is soo cute! And your right, they definitely should have given varian more screen time, and the lack of screen time is a pretty big reason for Vat7k, Iām to in the Vat7k lore yet because I havenāt gotten around to reading all of it but I tend to see fanart of Hugo and varian a lot
2. Season 3 is underrated like, being able to see the growth of all of the characters was a chefs KISS! I personally do love all the seasons of tangled and itās hard for me to rank but my favorite season is season two because I donāt really mind filler, and thank you for standing up for hookfoot and his mermaid ep because that ep was so cute š
3. Iām a Cassandra Stan because I just like her a lot but I see what youāre talking about, kinda. But no one has to like her and I think itās fine if people donāt,because sometimes I have characters that I just donāt like and donāt wanna be hated for not liking them.. *cough Marinette in MLB* - *cough willow in TTS*
4. So for me king Fredrick really pmo during season one but honestly just because I wasnāt really a fan of rapunzels parents for whatever reason but his reason for wanting to keep rapunzel safe was valid, and yeah he did go the wrong way about him but he should be spared from massive hate because at the end of the day he was just a concerned farther who was traumatized. *yes a concerned farther who made some big very annoying mistakes but a concerned farther none the less* and ty for bringing up the memory erasing plot cause that was SOO ANNOYING OMG.
#thanks for submitting!#i need sleep#tts#rapunzles tangled adventure#tangled#tangled the series#rapunzels tangled adventure#tts cassandra#cassandra#tts varian#cassunzel#tangled varian#disney tangled#cassandra tangled#rapunzel#rta

I think I may have confused myself, but how many times does Daemon get married in your story? š
First off, thank you for the question.
No worries I more than likely havenāt made it clear. And that's on me more than anything. Mostly because Iāve never talked about Geda.
Daemon does marry 5 times in my story: 1) Rhea Royce. She dies as she does in the show. 2) Igreyn Belmore (my OC). She dies from childbed fever. 3) Laena Velaryon. She dies as she does in the show. 4) Rhaenyra Targaryen. I havenāt revealed how she passes in my story. 5) Geda Vance of Wayfarerās Rest (my OC). She outlives Daemon.
Geda appears way towards the end of my story.
I can go into a little bit about her under the cut.
Her face claim is Gaia Mondadori. She just gives off the mixture of Igreyn and young Rhaenyra for me.
I have no clue where her name came from. Idk if I was going off of Gyda, Geta, Gada. Not a clue. It's lost to me. But Geda fits her and so it's who she is. I chose Vance of Wayfarer's Rest for two reasons: 1) their history connected to the Targaryens and as well to the Blacks in the book. 2) I was going to have Igreyn be a Vance but changed it when I saw the sigil to House Belmore and thought it was an unnamed house. So Igreyn is a Belmore by chance.
Geda was created because I knew Rhaenyra would die in my story. And Daemon had some years left to live. So I gave him a fifth bride. She was at first just a prop for Daemon but she quickly became so much more. She had a voice and was going to be heard.
Geda is the daughter of Hugo Vance of Wayfarer's Rest. She was born in the year 127 AC. She has one sibling. A much older brother named Kevyn (118 AC) who is heir. Geda doesn't come into my story until Aegon III ascends the throne. She was at the coronation with her father and brother.
I won't go into detail on Rhaenyra's death. But she does sit the throne and is Queen. After her death Daemon was a widower. In my story he is not one who is the type to be alone. He always has to have someone near him.
I haven't fully fleshed her out mostly because she is like a character that would appear in the appendix of a story. But I will say she is kind and understanding. However, she also has a strength to her character that she does not take others guff so easily. She will fire back at others if possible. If not she will find Daemon and let him know how a person behaved. She sometimes borderlines on ābrat behaviorā. She knows who she is married to, the Rogue Prince, rider of Caraxes, and knows what he is capable of. Even in old age.
She may be devoted to Daemon but she also isn't a āsilly little girlā that he can maneuver around for his pleasure. While she lets Daemon make a lot of the decisions, she also knows that he enjoys a little push back. A little push and pull. Almost how Daemon was with Rhaenyra when she was around that age. But at the age Daemon is when he marries Geda, it's more of an indulgent that he wants to dabble in and Geda easily rises to the challenge.
As a mother Geda is as fierce as any dragon would be protecting its clutch. She loves each of them dearly. Though she does have a favorite (Rhaerra). She doesn't spoil them but she doesn't discipline them either. She figures they're Targaryens and they can do as they please.
When Geda enters the picture, all of Daemon's children are either away from him or just āoverā him. Baela is living on Driftmark. Rhaena is engaged to Garmund Hightower and soon to live in Oldtown. Rhagerys is on Dragonstone and then would live in the Vale a few years later. Aegon strongly dislikes his father on how he handled his mother's death. And Viserys has always been indifferent to the man. So, Daemon was alone and he had that need to have someone in his life. Who, in a way, revolved their life around him. Enter Geda.
Daemon has some personal growth in my story but not enough to fully change his ways. Geda is 14 when she marries Daemon. He is 60. Daemon honestly could have married anyone, within reason. But why pick someone who is set in their ways? When he could have someone be molded to his ways?
Daemon did not know how long he would live but he knew he wanted someone there to take care of him as he aged. Geda graciously stepped into the role of a wife and caretaker mixed into one. Almost a parallel to Alicent and Viserys. But unlike those two, Daemon never did make Geda feel less than or used. And to Geda, Daemon could do no wrong. In her eyes he raised and set the sun. Just what Daemon wanted. The back and forth they develop as the marriage progresses is jut an added bonus.
The marriage was not so much scandalous but it was met by his children with strong side eyes. Along with exasperated sighs. Especially when Daemon and Geda started having children.
That is all I have of Geda as of now. I do really like her, it's just she plays such a minor role that I don't talk about her much. But I should. Because she is quite the character. Particularly as she grows into her own and settles into her marriage with Daemon.
#Thank you again for the ask#My HotD OMC#My HotD OMC Basics#OC: Geda Vance#OC: Igreyn Belmore#HotD#.............Daemon and Geda's relationship sounds like it's a dom/sub one#I'm not opposed to it but idk where that came from

Since you did a modern/au fashion on Velargirls, I wanted to ask you if you could do the historical (like actual timeline) version of it, you said you collect pics of clothes, both historical and modern that you can imagine them wearing. I know Jace often wears Sunfyreās palette, Joff wears mostly red and black Targ colors and Luce is in Velaryon colors. But perhaps their signature styles or some pics of what you imagine them wearing would be nice like you did it with the modern!au version! If you'd rather not do this one, that's completely alr! I just wanted some pictures of their clothing to imagine the dresses they would wear when I read the books.
Disclaimer: GOT/HOTD is a pseudo medieval setting, so not everything about the fashion I choose is 100% accurate to the Western European medieval era.
I took a lot of cues from the official GOT costumes book, where the designer talks about how she was inspired by clothing from places like Japan. I also like Bernadette Bannerās video explaining how in GOT (or the earlier seasons at least), costuming tried to be historically accurate according to the rules of its own universe, not ours.
HOTD has different costume designers than GOT. I have a very amateur interest in historical fashion, but it seems to me that GOT was a bit more exploratory with its fashion (like Cerseiās kimono dresses) while HOTD generally tries to stick closer to more Western European medieval styles (with exceptions, like Aemondās Hugo Boss coat). So I have a headcanon that in the 170 years between HOTD and GOT, more and more Essosi fashions come to Westeros, which leads to the changes that we see between the two shows.
In my series, these fashion trends are sped up quicker than in canon. One of Jaceās goals is to be a cultural icon at court, so her fashion choices (which are heavily influenced by Rhaena, who spent her childhood in Pentos) spread among the other highborn ladies.
Jaceās wedding gown is based off Margaeryās purple wedding gown, with some differences, e.g. gold color scheme.

Jaceās wraparound dress that she wears to the feast announcing the pregnancy is based on Cerseiās early season dresses.

Other outfits that give me Jace vibes:

Luce is tricky because most days at Dragonstone and Driftmark, sheās stomping around in really plain dresses that she can get messy. But at public events and in KL, she has to dress according to her station. Maybe some of her gowns are secretly pants underneath.

(Danyās Qarth dress is by far my favorite reference photo for Luceās outfits when I get art of her.)
Joff, to nobodyās surprise, is the most Targ-coded in regards to her wardrobe. I tend to reference Rhaenyraās outfits for Joffās. Joff is definitely hoping to inherit Rhaenyraās clothes one day.

Do you have recommendations for future fics starring the current cast's children? Preferably ones where the kids have become superheroes themselves, but not required.
Sure, I've got a few! I dunno how much focus is required to qualify, but I'll do my best!
a story retold by @hanaasbananas
āNo, no no, darling,ā he shushed Emma, ādonāt cry, your maman needs her sleep.ā Rocking Emma slowly until she settled again, he continued āWhat if i tell you a story, hm? Shall I tell you all about how I met your mamanāyouād like that, wouldnāt you?ā or: 4 times Adrien told his children how he met their mother, and 1 time someone else told it instead.

Cheating Cat by @11jj11
When Emma and Isaac Dupain-Cheng realize that Adrien is Chat Noir, that can only mean one thing... that he's cheating on Marinette with Ladybug, and they're the only ones that know!
This is really cute, with Emma and Isaac being worried about Adrien supposedly cheating on Marinette and wanting to talk to Ladybug to stop her from dating Chat Noir. Thatās not all thatās going on here, though - Isaacās actually adopted, but he and Adrien are still related, which puts an interesting twist on the tale. Thereās a reason heās especially sympathetic to the fact that Adrien being Chat Noir means he would have had to fight his own fatherā¦

Turtle-y Awesome! by chatonne-rousse
Hugo Dupain-ChengĀ lovesĀ turtles, and by extension, he loves Carapace, his favorite superhero of them all. He doesn't know yet that his idol is also his Uncle Nino, and Nino hasn't yet seen the Carapace shrine that is Hugo's bedroom. But the little man is turning five and has just two wishes - a Carapace-themed party with friends and family, and the latest, greatest Carapace play set. This is a story of best friends, laughter, good kids and even better parents, and a whole lot of turtles.

Into the Unknown by NUMBER1ANGIRL
Marinette Dupain-Cheng has been Ladybug for 12 years now. Sheās been fighting Hawkmoth by herself in this time, without the partner she was promised. When Hawkmoth is defeated, she starts fighting a new villain, and the strange ache of something she wasnāt aware was missing.

Growing Fangs by @rosie-b
Louisa Dupain-Cheng has always liked to keep secrets. When she finds out that her parents are the heroes of Paris while spying on them as they transform for a patrol one night, she decides to keep this new finding all to herself. But as the years go by, will she change her mind?
---
This last one's incomplete, but it's got quite a lot of focus on the future kids.
Primary Sources (And Other Historical Epiphanies) by Hoover_the_fish
Mary BeaurĆ©al hates history, so she's not too jazzed for the history reports and group presentations that Caline Bustier assigns for her class. However, the people in her life have an odd connection to an era her teacher refers to only as, "Ladybug and Chat Noir," a connection that none of them seem to want to remember. "For some reason, there arenāt a whole lot of newspaper articles, but thereās an old blog online that might be worth checking out. As far as I know all the pictures, interviews, the articles that still exist- they all ended up there at some point or another." "Do you know what it's called?" "I believe she named it the Ladyblog."

Romance, Fantasy, Sci-Fi Book Recs
A list for @ho3hologram and anyone else. I have NOT included the books I recc'ed you earlier in picture form Holo.
I've read 699 books since 2012, so here are the ones I've rated 4* and up - maybe a few 3* (the way I rated changed multiple times over the years). Fair warning, what I like might not be what you like, so read the synopsis, read other reviews, and decide for yourself; and if you think my recs are dogshit, keep it to yourself.
I also love delving into middle schooler books, like some TV shows they are better, IMO. They have more substance because they're trying to show and teach kids.
My Goodreads account is HERE if anyone wants to shift through my 3* and below books or my TBR.
The Books of Bayern - Shannon Hale (Middle Grade, Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance) In distant lands of magic and wonder, four young women will rise to save their kingdoms and their loved ones against the dark forces that threaten to tear them all apart.
I have a big fat nerd crush on Christopher Moore's writing. He has a Vampire series (A Love Story), a Demon series (Pine Cove), Coyote Blue (Urban Fantasy, Mythology, Romance/Love) as a 5* rating from me. One of my absolute favorites from him that I try to re-read every couple of years is Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. It's funny, it has romance and fantasy.
The Wicked Years - Gregory Maguire (Adult, Fantasy, Romance) The novels follow the Wicked Witch of the West, her friends, relatives, and enemies, through several decades as they witness some of Oz's most turbulent times. (Wicked of course influenced the Broadway play AND the movie, but there are 3 books following Wicked that are also A+, and a Book 0 of when Elphi was a child that I JUST saw when putting this together.)
Alice in Deadland - Mainak Dhar (Young Adult, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Zombies) Civilization as we know it ended more than fifteen years ago, leaving as it's legacy barren wastelands called the Deadland and a new terror for the humans who survived- hordes of undead Biters.
The Android's Dream - John Scalzi (Adult, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Space Opera) A human diplomat kills his alien counterpart. Earth is on the verge of war with a vastly superior alien race. A lone man races against time and a host of enemies to find the one object that can save our planet and our people from alien enslavement...
Agnes and the Hitman - Jennifer Crusie (Romance, Mystery) Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett and you've got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love⦠(this book is almost 20 years old, good luck finding it, but I do love it)
I have a hard-on for everything Kay Simone has written that I've read. (Gay romance m/m, there's 1 android book) (Only Available on Kindle)
The Claidi Journals - Tanith Lee (Young Adult, High Fantasy, Romance, Adventure) All her life, Claidi has endured hardship in the House, where she must obey a spoiled princess. Then a golden stranger arrives, living proof of a world beyond the House walls. Claidi risks all to free the charming prisoner and accompanies him across the Waste. (From 2001. I do not rec the 4th book, I really only liked the first 3)
NOLA Nights - Thea de Salle (Adult, Romance, Erotica, BDSM) Hotel chain mogul Sol DuMont is about to learn that some of lifeās biggest surprises come in deceptively small packagesānamely a petite heiress named Rain whoās hell-bent on upsetting her familyās expectations
Ravenswood series - Talia Hibbert (Adult, Romance) In this small English town, feisty, outcast heroines are swept off their feet by the strong, sweet men who love them. (honestly, ANYTHING by Talia gets a rec from me)
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Tylor Jenkins Reid (Adult, Romance, Historical Fiction, LGBT) Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Weezie and Bebe Mysteries - Mary Kay Andrews (Adult, Romance, Mystery) Eloise āWeezieā Foley, a recently divorced antique dealer, and BeBe Loudermilk, a triple-divorced restaurant owner, in Savannah, Georgia
Lizzy & Diesel - Janet Evanovich (Adult, Mystery, Modern Fantasy, Romance, Paranormal) Lizzy is an Unmentionable, with a special talent for finding things that Diesel needs. The Stones of Power have re-surfaced and Diesel needs to get to them before Wulf does. The Seven Stones of Power reflect each of the Seven Deadly Sins. (There's only 3 books and I think there's supposed to be 1 for each stone, the 3rd book came out in 2015 so idk if this series is getting finished lmao, but it's a fun read!)
Simonverse - Becky Albertalli (Young Adult, Romance, LGBT) (tbh I only read The Upside of Unrequited and Leah on the Offbeat) Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited loveāsheās lived through it twenty-six times. She crushes hard and crushes often, but always in secret. Because no matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly canāt stomach the idea of rejection. So sheās careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.
The River of No Return - Bee Ridgeway (Adult, Romance, Fantasy, Time Travel, Historical) Two hundred years after he was about to die on a Napoleonic battlefield, Lord Nicholas Falcott wakes up in twenty-first-century London. The Guild, a secretive fraternity of time travelers, informs him that there is no return. But Nick yearns for the beautiful Julia Percy, who remains in 1815. As fate and the fraying fabric of time draw Nick and Julia together once again, the lovers must match wits and gamble their hearts against the rules of time itself.
The Black Veins - Ashia Monet (Young Adult, LGBT, Urban Fantasy) Sixteen-year-old Blythe is one of seven magicians powerful enough to cause worldwide panic with a snap of their fingers. But Blythe spends her days pouring latte art at her familyās coffee shop, so why should she care about having apocalyptic abilities? (So this was supposed to be a series and it ends - I think? on a cliffhanger? Or it leaves it leading into obviously the 2nd one, but this came out in 2019...and there's no sequel, yet)
These Witches Don't Burn - Isabel Sterling (Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy, LGBT, Witches) Hannahās a witch, but not the kind youāre thinking of. Sheās the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If sheās ever caught using it in front of a Reg ( non-witch), she could lose it. For good.
Brimstone - Cherie Priest (Adult, Historical, Paranormal, Fantasy, Horror) In the trenches of Europe during the Great War, Tomas Cordero operated a weapon more devastating than any gun: a flame projector that doused the enemy in liquid fire. Having left the battlefield a shattered man, he comes home to find yet more tragedy for in his absence, his wife has died of the flu. Haunted by memories of the woman he loved and the atrocities he perpetrated, Tomas dreams of fire and finds himself setting match to flame when awake. . . .
Howl's Moving Castle - Diana Wynn Jones (Middle Grade, Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Magic) (tbh I only read book 1 and 3, I DNF'ed 2 bc I didn't like how it described one of the fat characters) The book is similar but very different from the movie. House of Many Ways (book 3): Charmain Baker is in over her head. Looking after Great-Uncle William's tiny cottage while he's ill should have been easy. But Great-Uncle William is better known as the Royal Wizard Norland, and his house bends space and time.
Song of the Dryad - Natalia Leigh (Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Fae) Seventeen-year-old Charlotte Barclay is still haunted by an encounter she had eight years agoāa run-in with a fairy beast that had eyes like witchlight and a taste for flesh. Charlotte has avoided the Greenwood ever since, pretending fairies donāt exist and choosing instead to focus her energies on graduating from high school and perfecting her audition piece for the Bellini Institute.
The Savior's Champion - Jenna Moreci (Young Adult, High Fantasy, Romance) Tobias Kaya doesn't care about The Savior. He doesn't care that She's the Ruler of the realm or that She purified the land, and he certainly doesn't care that She's of age to be married. But when competing for Her hand proves to be his last chance to save his family, heās forced to make The Savior his priority.
Spoiler Alert - Olivia Dade (Adult, Romance) Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. The world may know him as Aeneas, star of the biggest show on television, but fanfiction readers call him something else: Book!AeneasWouldNever. Marcus gets out his frustrations with the show through anonymous stories about the internetās favorite couple, Aeneas and Lavinia.
The Nightmare-Verse - L.L. McKinney (Young Adult, Urban Fantasy, Romance) In L. L. McKinneyās urban fantasy series reimagining Alice in Wonderland, an Atlanta teenager struggling with real-world issues also combats monstrous creatures in Wonderland with a combination of magic weapons and martial arts skills. And living such a complicated double life could cause Alice to lose her headā¦literally.
The Merciful Crow - Margaret Owen (Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Magic) Follow a young chieftain from a lowly caste of mercy-killers who strikes a bargain with the crown prince to preserve the future of her clan.
Ash Princess Trilogy - Laura Sebastian (Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance) Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia's family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess--a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner. For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She's endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.
Legends and Lattes - Travis Baldree (Adult, Fantasy, Cozy, LGBT, Romance) When an injury throws a young, battle-hungry orc off her chosen path, she may find that what we need isn't always what we seek.
Shades of Magic - Victoria E. Schwab (Young Adult, Fantasy, Magic, Historical Fiction) Kell is one of the last Antari--magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons: Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black. Officially, he's an ambassador; unofficially, he's a smuggler. After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.
Constellation - Claudia Gray (Young Adult, Sci-Fi, Romance, Space Fantasy, Dystopia) (This is the series I was talking about that I didn't remember!) Noemi and Abel are enemies in an interstellar war, forced by chance to work together as they embark on a daring journey through the stars. Their efforts would end the fighting for good, but they're not without sacrifice. The stakes are even higher than either of them first realized, and the more time they spend together, the more they're forced to question everything they'd been taught was true.
Southlands - Rachel Hartman (Young Adult, Fantasy, Dragons, Romance) Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high. Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murderedāin a suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.
Between Earth and Sky - Rebecca Roanhorse (Adult, Fantasy, LGBT, Indigenous) In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and is set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a manās mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.
Ok these are the first 29, bc we're only allowed to add 30 links. I will reblog and add more tomorrow, because it's a little after 1am now and I'm sleepy.
