Wanted to share some more art I just haven't uploaded from last year! Really enjoyed doing these feline studies, dozens of hours of unseen research went into each on top of the many hours it took to draw 😵

This oncilla – a reclusive wild cat roughly the size of a domestic cat, but with bigger eyes and teeth – is fleeing into the undergrowth, having been released after six months of rehabilitation in a wildlife refuge. It was rescued from smugglers in Colombia.

The previous opponent of the kodkod, the southern tiger cat was separated as a species from the oncilla: this is the northern tiger cat or tigrillo. (Leopardus species have such amazing names.) They are indeed very similar-looking, but they live in different areas and they don't interbreed.

i think what bothers me about a lot of "girl power" narratives is that they function on the implicit idea on the idea that women can become worthy of respect. and i happen to think that really caring about women means believing they already are worthy of respect. that historical seamstresses and soccer moms and forgotten sisters and sweet polite little girls and someone's weird grandma matter just as much as the warriors and politicians, even if they, personally, never accomplish anything "cool."

In Costa Rica, the oncilla preys heavily upon the Talamancan deermouse, which in turn feasts on oak seeds. Because of this close relationship, the cat can keep populations in check, preventing overgrazing, says José Daniel Ramírez-Fernández, a biologist and coordinator of the Oncilla Project.
