Včera mi byla po asi dvou letech přítelkyní připomenuta existence kočky plochočelé. Jsou to opravdu kuriózní miciny, není toho o nich mnoho známo, do roku 1995 se dokonce věřilo, že vyhynuly, ale naštěstí jsou stále mezi námi!

Plochočelky (a nebo jim ještě říkám plackočky, v angličtině se totiž jmenují flat-headed cat) žijí na ostrovech Borneo a Sumatra a taky na Malajském poloostrově. Je možné, že i jinde, ale to už se neví. Neví se ani, kolik jich může vlastně být. Živí se rybami, k jejichž lovu mají dokonce i speciálně uzpůsobený chrup a mezi prsty na packách plovací blánu. Tu kromě plochočelek mají taky jejich příbuzné kočky rybářské. Ale pozor, plackočky se neživí jen rybami, ale taky obojživelníky a rády si pochutnají na sladkých bramborách.

Podle mě jsou to tak trochu ošklivé příšerky a na některých fotografiích mi hodně připomínají outloně, na jiných vydry obrovské (pokud nevíte, jak vypadají, dobře pro vás). To nic nemění na tom, že jsou velice kůl!

Two pleasantly weird-looking cats, both living around water in Southeast Asia and preying mostly on fish. (My favourite sentence of flat-headed cat's wikipedia page: "They have been observed to wash objects, raccoon-style.") The fishing cat shows the standard Prionailurus spots, while the flat-headed cat is the only non-spotted member of the genus. (It's still agouti, not solid colored - in domestic cat terms, this pattern would be called ticked tabby.)

Happy Flat (Headed) Fuck Friday!

In a nature group I'm a part of, we were talking about wildcats and I mentioned that the weirder members of the family are my faves. I posted a photo in the chat of this flat-headed cat who's expression looked somewhere between 'no thoughts, head empty' and existential crisis, and we all had a good laugh! So, that was the inspiration for this haha

Last day of February i bring you an absolute banger of a cat. Please google it, look at it's superbness!! I am big fan of big ears, but even I gotta admit that the Flat-headed cat has the cutest little ears.

The flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps) is native to Borneo, Sumatra and the Thai-Malay peninsula. It is categorised as endangered, because of habitat loss.
