BTS Summer Fic Recs
Tumblr media
Here are some summer fanfic recommendations if you need something to read on the beach, by the pool, or just in your room while you're trying to escape the heat! If you enjoy any of these stories, please don't forget to let the author know by reblogging and leaving feedback. Most of these stories contain smut or other mature themes so MINORS DNI!
kim namjoon
solace by @m-yg93 (13.5k) fluff/smut
[roommates to lovers]
summary: Namjoon thought getting used to a new roommate would take time and adaptation but you fit yourself into his apartment with ease. He swears he only landed in your bed to keep you safe in his arms when you get spooked by the storm. Surely he can blame the eventual lack of clothing on the summer’s heat stroke.
kim seokjin
all you’re giving me is friction by @hot-soop (28.3k) angst/smut/fluff
[surfer!seokjin x lifeguard!f.reader, lovers to enemies (lite) to lovers]
summary: You’ve graduated! Congratulations - you’ve got one thing checked off your parents ten year plan! Now all that’s left to do is start your dreary office job, drag yourself up the ladder to CEO, marry your (as yet unknown) dream guy, and carve out some time to pop out a few kids before your ovaries shrivel up… Except all of that sounds horrendous, and you’d much rather spend the next three months at Hoseok’s beach house with your closest friends - relaxing, partying, and sleeping late while you still can. And it would be your last perfect summer break, if it weren’t for the most irritating man on the planet (and his chickens) living next door.
min yoongi
the landlord by @ppersonna (4.3k) smut/light crack/pwp
[landlord!yoongi]
summary: your air conditioner breaks right at the height of a recordbreaking heat wave.  good thing your hot landlord, yoongi, knows how to attend to any needs you may have.
watermelon sugar by @yoonjinkooked (23k) smut/romcom
[strangers to lovers, vacation au]
summary: Travelling alone to your dream destination had sounded like a good idea at the time. And you don’t regret doing it, of course not - you’re in Greece! The food! The sun! The smell of the sea! The white walls and blue chairs, the hills, the warm days and colder nights. A little company wouldn’t hurt, though. That’s how you end up talking to Min Yoongi, your next door neighbour with whom you practically share a balcony. He’s quiet, he barely leaves his room but when you reach out, he doesn’t push you away. That’s how your Greek adventure begins.
jung hoseok
strawberry sundae by @youtifulhobi (6k) fluff
[lifeguard!hoseok x olympian swimmer!reader, meet cute]
summary: A few years after you begin dating Jung Hoseok, the two of you reminisce about how you met when he was a lifeguard and saved you from drowning, when in reality you had just fell off your strawberry floatie and he just wanted to talk to you.
a taste of paradise by @theharrowing (8k) light angst/smut
[strangers to lovers, chance encounters]
summary: A handsome stranger helps take your mind off of all of the drama that awaits you back home. It is bittersweet, isn’t it, how a chance encounter that makes you feel so good can also just leave you craving more.
park jimin
i need you tonight by @minisugakoobies (1.5k) smut/slight angst?
[pool boy!jimin]
summary: You’re tired of watching your evil stepmom waste your father’s money. So you steal one of her toys.
you dtf? by @sailoryooons (10.2k) smut/pwp
[strangers to one-night stand]
summary:  You’ve never had a one night stand. Jimin has had countless. You’re trying to experience new things. Jimin loves doing the same old shit. So when you meet the man going around the club inviting people to touch his ripped abs, you think perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to try new things. It’s Labor Day weekend at the shore - what can go wrong?
into the wilderness by @gukyi (27k) angst/fluff/comedy
[friends to lovers, camp counsellor au, unrequited love]
summary: alright, so last summer’s camp was… disastrous. from the murky green showers to the wasps nests, it was all-around a bad time. but none of those things could be quite as catastrophic as the end-of-camp counselor campfire, when you told park jimin that you were in love with him. and if telling him was terrible, then seeing him again this summer, one year after your fruitless confession, just might be the death of you.
kim taehyung
summer feelings by @jjkeverlast (558) fluff/crack
[childhood best friends to lovers]
summary: taehyung catches you off guard during your first trip to the beach.
himbo hours by @gimmethatagustd (7k) pwp/smut/humor
[himbo!taehyung x reader, strangers to lovers]
summary: Trouble always seems to follow Taehyung. An innocent night of finding new friends to share his alcohol, drugs, and boxy smiles quickly turns into a mess when he accidentally punches you, a poor, unsuspecting clubgoer, right in the face. Whoops!
trip by @daechwitatamic (22k) fluff
[friends to lovers, camping au]
summary: Your gigantic crush on Kim Taehyung is so bad that you drop whatever you’re holding every time he speaks to you. Your dirty liar of a best friend SWORE to you he wouldn’t be on this camping trip, but he is. Luckily, the trip gives Taehyung the chance to see you in a new light, admittedly with some help from his best friend (and definitely hired spy) Park Jimin.
jeon jungkook
in which sour and salt could be so sweet when jungkook’s existence reminds you that there is still good in the world. by @onlyswan (3.1k) fluff/a pinch of angst/suggestive
[established relationship]
baecation by @1kook (5.9k) smut
[richboy!jungkook, vacation au]
summary: “Lose the top, or lose the right to present yourself in any low back gown for the next three months.” He truly knew the way to your heart.
heartless by @here2bbtstrash (7.4k) pwp/smut

no longer strangers by @soft4gguk (9.4k) fluff/smut

at the end of the day by @starshapedkookie (13.3k) fluff/smut/a little angst
[ex-baseball player!jungkook, high school friends to lovers, beach/vacation au]
summary: You and Jungkook have been best friends for 8 years, going through absolute hell and back together. After senior year of high school, you and Jungkook began a tradition of taking annual vacations together during the summer months. This summer is no different, with you and Jungkook celebrating graduating college just a couple months prior. You're set to move to NYC after the summer, with you and Jungkook soaking in the sun and as many moments as you can together. You'd think nothing could ever tear your friendship apart with him, but when you've sat on the beach for too many days in a row watching him surf, you can't help but wonder - when did your best friend get so hot?
lemon sherbet by @extravaguk (15k) fluff/smut/angst
[tattoo artist!&piercing artist!jungkook x popular!reader, ex high school classmates, kinda frenemies to lovers, summer au]

[skaterboy!jungkook x reader, himbo energy]

ex on the beach by @beahae (mini-series, 18.2k) fluff/light angst/smut
[exes to lovers]
summary: You and Jungkook broke up. But it would be very silly of you to let the fancy beach vacation you both won go to waste, right?
stars behind waves by @taegularities (22.7k) angst/fluff/smut
[estranged childhood best friends to lovers, beach/vacation au]
summary: With a decade’s distance between Jungkook and you, your paths cross on the same island you deemed your second home years ago. And you realise once again – the ocean can never compare to the twinkle in his starry eyes.

[enemies to lovers, camp counsellor au]
summary: when your camp leader forces you and jeongguk as partners in a team building activity. with frustrations and anger flaring during your journey down the river, how will all this pent-up emotion get released?
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my list! I read some of these stories while on vacation this year, and some have stayed with me for a while since I read them last summer. If anyone has more summery recommendations, I'd love to hear them, so don't be afraid to put them in the comments or send me an ask <3

GOING FOR THE GOLD | TEASER
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS. 10,305 individual athletes participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games. 10,305 frustrated athletes trapped inside the bubble they called the Olympic Village with no means of leaving the grounds or releasing their pent up stress. Amongst the almost indestructible cardboard beds that were rumored to prevent athlete contact and the condom supply they supposedly cannot use, the message the Olympic organizers tried to send were mixed. Many athletes saw this as a challenge, one athlete being Team Korea’s one and only, John Suh. The famed swimmer was ready and willing to take on this challenge but he couldn’t do it alone. He needed a partner for it and you—best friend, fellow teammate, and competitive swimmer—were the perfect match.
GENRE. Olympics!AU, Swimming!AU, Teammates!AU, Friends-to-Lovers!AU, comedy, fluff, smut (minors: do not interact!)
PAIRING. Olympic Swimmer!Johnny x (f) Olympic Swimmer!reader
WARNINGS. food and beverage consumption, language, sexual tension, religious imagery, various sexual themes (praise kink, mirror kink, exhibition kink, oral sex: female and male receiving, mention of sex toys, penetration, unprotected sex, soft dom!Johnny, sub!reader); more warnings may be added as story is still being written!

“They said the cardboard beds wouldn’t last,” Johnny brought up nonchalantly in the Olympic Dining Hall. He had found you quickly after he called you twenty minutes prior. The friend that had accompanied you to lunch, fellow swimmer Park Sooyoung, had left your side once she saw Johnny approach. She merely laughed when you called her a traitor.
The man sat next to you as you scarfed down your food, thoroughly enjoying your first meal of the day. He paid no mind to how much you ate, having grown up at your side. You had trained under the same coach since you were teens and he had seen you in almost any and every state known to man.
Johnny had always found you quite attractive due to your looks and your passionate heart but never acted on it because he respected you. You were one of his best friends and although his heart skipped a beat whenever you walked in the room or dived so beautifully into the water, Johnny held himself back for the sake of your comfort.
But this? This was getting too hard to deal with. Five days in the Village. Five days without a proper release that he yearned for.
Asking a friend and person he was extremely attracted to for a favor—several favors—wouldn’t hurt. It could be a great time to shoot his shot.
“And?” you asked in between bites. Stealing a glance at him, you saw a mischievous glimmer in his eyes. There was something else taking over his handsome face but  you just couldn’t put your hands on it.
Leaning closer to his companion, the tall man brought his lips to your ear. Lowly, he asked, “Wanna test them and find out?”
Not expecting the question, you choked on your food. “Johnny!”
Heart racing a mile a minute, the feeling you were experiencing was close to one you felt right when you jumped out of the pool. Breath stolen and heart thrashing against your chest. Yes, you were used to his constant flirting over the years but Johnny had never been as explicit as this, well not since the day of your arrival. Your heart was still recovering from the stunt he pulled while filming the haul.
That moment, along with many others, was a hint of mutual attraction.
There were times you felt his eyes lingering on your face or body, causing you to heat up under his gaze. And sure, you admired him when he wasn’t looking: adoring the way water droplets grazed the broad slopes of his shoulders, the curves of his arms, and the hard lines of his abs. There were a variety of good looking men on the swim team yet your eyes kept wandering back to Johnny. On the off chance of him catching your stare, Johnny would send you a smirk that would make your knees weak and body quiver with want. It was the exact smirk he was giving you at that moment and you were so close to breaking. The secret crush you harbored on him did not assist you either.
“What?” he leaned back on his chair, arms draping against the back of your own. “Not interested? ‘Cause I am.”
To hide your flustered state, you tugged on your friend’s ear. Johnny always loved getting you riled up; in fact, he found it quite entertaining and for that, he needed to be punished. He yelped at the sudden pain inflicted on him, body tugged down towards you.
“You can’t just say that out here!” you glared before forcefully letting Johnny free.
The swimmer laughed at the clear embarrassment on his friend’s face. “Why not? You know everyone else here is thinking about it, too.”
“No, they’re not.”
You were not going to give into Johnny’s evil and flirtatious clutches. You evaded his lesser advances on and off camera so far. You could do it here in the Games. In the Village they can’t leave. Totally. Absolutely. You were an Olympian. You could withstand the temptation. Not that Johnny Suh was tempting in the slightest. Not at all.
“10,000 plus athletes locked in the village with nowhere to go. All pent up with frustrations beyond end. Supplied with endless condoms that we supposedly can’t use and beds that could possibly break,” he stated, the playful grin on his lips growing with each word. Eyes piercing into yours, he raised a brow. “Isn’t that a challenge?”
His long fingers brushed against the back of your neck, tickling your skin. A shiver ran down your spine and you were sure the goosebumps littering your skin did not come from the cold air blasting from the air conditioner. Your breath hitched as Johnny’s touch rubbed against your nape. “And I know you love the challenge, don’t you?”
Sinking your teeth into your bottom lip, you shut your eyes. You were not going to give in to him. Even though your body screamed to do so, you couldn’t. There were more important things than satisfying your wants—your seemingly desperate wants. You needed to focus. You needed to win and if not giving into the flirting helped you achieve your dream of becoming an Olympic medalist even though you craved a man’s touch, so be it.
“Trust me, resisting you wouldn’t be a challenge at all.”

Change The Game – Intrinsic Motivation
Young female athletes have been urged to be themselves by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes after women told of abuse over their body image (BBC Sport, 2019; Hattenstone, 2019).
Numerous athletes, like Winter Olympian Aimee Fuller said she had been sent "horrific" messages on social media, while swimming champion Rebecca Adlington was "called a whale" (BBC Sport, 2013 & 2019). It comes after American gymnast Katelyn Ohashi told how her comeback from injury was blighted by comments on social media. "I was told I didn't look like a gymnast. I was told I looked like I'd swallowed an elephant, or looked like a pig," she said. "You have to think, 'I am who I am and I like who I am,'"(Whitehead, 2019).
All these negative comments are extremely hurtful and can damage anyone’s mental health and motivation to participate in Sport (BBC Sport, 2012). It has been suggested by Wankel (1993) that enjoyment is a key component for understanding and explaining motivation and experiences of sport and exercise participants.
Katelyn Ohashi knows that you do not need Olympic Gold medals to be a successful gymnast (Vallerand, 1983). She has recently achieved a perfect score of ten, six times and is doing it all her own way, for the love of her sport. Here’s a look at Intrinsic motivation at its best.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07h617v
The Need Achievement Theory (Atkinson, 1974 & McClelland, 1961) is an interactional view that considers both personal and situational factors as important predictors of behaviours (Weinberg & Gould, 2011). In conjunction with this is the Competence Motivation Theory (Weiss & Chaumeton, 1992; Harter, 1988), used to explain that people are motivated to feel valued and competent (Weinberg & Gould, 2011). To illustrate both theories, if a football player has high self-esteem, feels proficient and enjoys where they play, then their happiness, pride and satisfaction will increase the amount of effort they put into each session. Conversely, if they have low self-esteem, believe their efforts are not worthy and feel incompetent and no longer enjoy where they play, then their motivation will be negatively affected (Weinberg & Gould, 2011).
The Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 1991 and Vallerand & Losier, 1999) critically evaluates both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in sport and importantly discusses how self-motivation can have similar impact to intrinsic motivation (Vlachopoulos, Karageorghis & Terry, 2000). When an athlete is intrinsically motivated, they engage in activities that are for personal pleasure and with a full sense of personal control (Gallucci, 2008).

⭐could you give us a director's cut of your process behind the technical parts of King of my Heart?? I find all the in depth stuff about their training so interesting and when I reread them I always wonder if you've got existing knowledge or if you're just really good at research⭐
Cassidy’s shoulders and abs burned as she finished her first 300. She relaxed her quads and her pull buoy nearly hit her in the nose as it bobbed to the surface. Her legs felt loose and useless as she treaded water, exhausted from the swim. Her paddles made a loud smack as she slapped them down on the side of the pool, reaching for her water bottle, her fingers shaking and feeling useless as she tried to hold the bottle to her lips. She watched the clock out of the corner of her eye. Ben was sitting on the side of the pool, staring up at the ceiling. Lucky bastard, Cassidy thought, realizing he had a high rest set. She had 5 seconds left. Goggles on. Go.
Her first real breaststroke of the day. One long pull, one solid kick. She broke the surface and forgot how tired she was. This was her favorite part. Bringing all her muscles together as one. Pull-whip-push-straight, pull-whip-push-straight, she repeated the mantra over and over as she lifted her head and shoulders, sucked in a deep breath through the water pouring off her cheeks, pushed her face under again, and whipped her feet through the water, propelling herself forward with every motion. In between, on the straights, she made sure to extend her body fully. Her biceps flush against her ears, her ankles pressed together and her toes pointed, just for a split second before she started the next stroke. Always close the parachute. Those were the words she used when teaching little kids how to swim breaststroke. Her eyes never moved from the black line below her. Her hips stayed square to the bottom of the pool. This was the one thing in her life she could always execute perfectly.
The 50 ended too fast and she switched to backstroke for her choice 50 so she could breathe. Her chest heaved quickly with each pass of her arms over her ears, thumb out, twist, pinky in, her abs protested as she lifted her hips to the surface. But at least it wasn’t butterfly. Anyone who chose butterfly was psychotic and should be committed to an asylum, Cassidy fully believed that. Her backstroke 50 seemed to drag on forever and she defiantly bucket turned at the wall, flipping backwards and pushing off the wall on her stomach. Underwater pullout and then, pull-whip-push-straight…
Director’s Cut:
Most of this comes from years of swimming competitively from elementary school through high school. I specialized in breaststroke. However, I did watch videos to see how Olympic swimmers swim, specifically Rebecca Soni breaking the world record in 2012. I also looked up Olympic level workouts bc I only know workouts up to high school level. And I researched what Olympians eat while training. Other than facts like when the trials are and what times they’d have to make, I didn’t need to look up much!

klaroline au: caroline's a barista and turns out the cute guy who has been flirting with her at the coffee shop for the last six months is?????????? an olympian swimmer???????? WITH AMAZING ABS??????????
The Olympics was Bonnie’s thing, but Caroline was a supportive roommate and popped the popcorn while Bonnie cheered on the swimming finalists. She had just finished dressing their bowls - butter for her, chocolate sauce for Bonnie - when she heard, “Ummmm, Care? Remember that British guy who’s always flirting with you at the cafe?”
Sighing dreamily, Caroline heads back to the living room, sagging against the doorway. “Klaus Mikaelson, arrogant ass with dimples to kill. He started leaving me napkins with drawings, so I guess his art student shtick is real.” She had doubted it for a while, just another line from some hipster trying to woo any barista into their bed. But he was cute, almost earnest when it came to lingering over his coffee order, wishing he had longer than a few minutes to spare on his way to the studio. When she handed over his coffee last time, he set down a napkin covered in a sketch of her work visor, frizzy curls poking out from her ponytail. It was…endearing, surprisingly so given how much she hated when guys hit on her at work. “Why do you ask?”
“Isn’t that him?” Bonnie’s arm was raised, a finger pointed at their TV.
Caroline frowned, launching herself onto the couch and setting the popcorn safely on the table. Sure enough, Klaus Mikaelson was at the Olympics, in a Speedo, with a thousand abs. “I- Uh- What?”
Thinking back to that last visit, Caroline remembered him mentioning an overseas trip. He really wanted to ask her out, but the plans were unavoidable, see, and asked for her number instead. They’ve been texting occasionally over the last month, but not once did the word “Olympian” come up. “He mentioned that he swims, I guess, but never in the context of international competition.”
And so she found herself hooting and hollering along with Bonnie as he raced, screaming when he splashed the water in victory, laughing at his hair when he pulled off the cap.
Ten minutes later, Caroline was still reeling from her cafe flirt winning an Olympic final when her phone started buzzing on the table. Glancing at the screen, she blinked when Klaus’s name flashed. She frantically reached for the phone to answer, “Hello?”
“Caroline,” he laughed, sounding out of breath and happier than she’d ever heard. “I’m having the best night of my life, and I was wondering if I could take you out when I get back to town?”
Her mouth hung open, and it took a long moment for her to find words. “Did you just win a freaking gold medal?”
“That depends,” he laughed again. “Can I finally buy you that coffee?”
Prompts are open for mini-drabble requests!

anyway the bodybuilder look that so many ppl model their fahc art after is an incredibly unhealthy thing, like they literally starve themselves to look like that and have that little body fat, like if you look at, say, olympians they don’t look like that, even the ones with very little body fat (like the swimmers). like even. look at blaine when he isn’t flexing his abs. he’s got body fat! he’s soft around the middle when he’s not actively flexing! that’s the kind of body type yall are thinking you’re drawing and can’t even handle the fact that a real-life person like what you’re salivating over has any kind of body fat!

Olympian’s Mind-Blowing Waterless Swim Workout Goes Viral
[ad_1]
Tumblr media
No workout equipment at home? Russian swimmer Yuliya Efimova has a monster workout that only requires a kitchen counter and abs of steel.
The controversial three-time Olympic medalist uploaded a video of her “swim” drills out of the pool earlier this month and reminded followers to stay home. The video was viewed more than 11 million times after it was shared on Twitter this week.

Dermatologist's Tips on Exercise and Longevity To Thrive
Tumblr media
Dermatologist offers her personal insights
A regular, weekly exercise routine has been proven to increase longevity and prevent many of the most common health problems.
I’ve been writing about it for years and am a big proponent of exercise for health and vitality. But, how do you stay motivated to get your exercise on a daily basis and how much exercise do you need to do?
How do you stay motivated to exercise every week?
By seeing people who exercise and who look and feel great. My husband, who reads the Wall Street Journal every morning, just sent me a link to a very motivating local woman featured in the WSJ – and we don’t live anywhere near New York. Click here to see the article and photo. I hope to be her at 89!
The article discusses 89 year-old Gail Roper, who lives in Healdsburg (our part of the world), and she is diligent about her exercise. She swims three times a week and more. She is a former U.S. Olympian and has been a Masters swimmer for years. She also finds ways to turn daily housework into fitness exercises such as doing lunges when she vacuums or bicep curls with a cold iron before ironing! It’s creative multitasking and gets the exercises into her day. And – the photo of her in the WSJ shows her energy, happiness and vitality. For me, Gail is a role model. If I resemble Gail in any way when I am 89, I’ll be thrilled.
What diseases does exercise help to prevent and reverse?
The benefits of exercise have been shown to help fight and slow some of the most common health problems::
Heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure and stroke.
Diabetes and obesity. Exercise helps you better maintain a healthy blood sugar and energy level.
Arthritis and back pain (both of which I have battled and I know from personal experience that exercise is essential).
Asthma
Dementia, Alzheimers and Parkinson’s
Cancer (which matters a lot to me thanks to inheriting the BRCA breast and ovarian cancer gene and being a cancer survivor myself).
Exercise has even been shown to reverse cellular aging – Yes, turn back your cellular clock.
Why does exercise keep you healthy?
Exercise changes your body’s physiology:
helping to fight inflammation that promotes cancer, cardiovascular disease and many of the other common health problems;
boosting your immune system; and
lowering your risk of obesity (also linked to health problems and increased risk of cancer).
It probably does so much more that is yet to be discovered. I know that I look and feel so much more alive and energetic after a good workout. The photo of Gail supports this – I want to look as vital as Gail does if I am lucky enough to make it to 89.
How much exercise do you need to stay healthy?
I’ve followed the medical and scientific literature about exercise for years and distilled it to practical terms. My goal is 150 minutes a week of moderate cardio plus strengthening and flexibility workouts too. I aim for 3 weekly 50 minute sessions of moderate cardio. This means:
150 minutes a week (2 hours and 30 minutes total) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity
Measured by being able to talk, but not sing! CDC gives examples as:
walking briskly at 3 miles per hour or faster,
water aerobics,
bicycling slower than 10 miles per hour,
doubles tennis,
ballroom dancing,
general gardening.
-OR-
75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) of vigorous intensity aerobic activity
Measured by being unable to say more than a few words without catching your breath! CDC gives examples as:
jogging or race walking,
swimming laps,
singles tennis,
aerobic dancing,
bicycling 10 miles per hour or faster,
jumping rope,
heavy gardening like digging or hoeing,
hiking uphill or with a heavy backpack.
-OR-
A combination of these performed in at least 10-minute sessions throughout the week. It’s very doable!
The best anti-aging fitness routine.
In addition to cardio exercise, you also want to do:
Strength training to help prevent the age-related loss of muscle mass. You need strength to get you through the normal activities of daily living, such as getting in and out of the bathtub, up stairs, etc. Resistance training also helps keep bones stronger and helps to support your joints. Options include weight training, pushups and squats, yoga, or even heavy gardening.
Flexibility exercises are also important to maintain range of motion for your joints.
Stability exercises are also important to help maintain balance and prevent falls.
Flexibility, strength and stability workouts are why yoga is such a multitasking exercise – you get a three-fer in a yoga class. I’m a fan!
Let Gail be our motivation – at 89 she rock the vitality. It’s spring, capture your natural yearning to go outside for a walk. Sign up for yoga or some weight training at your local gym. Do some stretches with your workouts. Let spring keep us moving.
And, when you are outdoors, be sure to use good sun protection. Wear a hat and sun protective clothing and a good zinc oxide sunscreen.
Click here for my dermatologist’s sun protection tips and solutions.
Note in the photo that Gail is also wearing a full body swimsuit, just like I do when I swim. Yes, I get strange looks in the pool, but my skin will last a lifetime, and I get a better work out thanks to the drag from the suit in the water.

Klance Fic Recs, AU Settings I
Okay so I might end up making multiple parts for AU settings. This one contains mostly occupational/hobby/setting AU stuff. So unless an AU fic prominently featured a certain element, it’ll go on another list. So there are some College AUs, 2 Soulmate AUs, and maybe a few others.
SPORTS
Olympians house on fire by ilgaksu When Lance McClain is eighteen, he qualifies for the Olympics.
When he's nineteen, he meets Keith.
Correlation does not mean cause, until it totally does.
your love is bright as ever by aknightley (gymnast!Keith, swimmer!Lance) A brief interlude in the future of the Olympic AU, Christmas with Keith and Lance and their cats.
"This always looks easier in those made for television movies," Keith tells Blue, who rolls over and out of his lap, chasing her own bits of tinsel.
In It To Win It by Lucy_Claire One of two things was happening right now, either Lance was having a heart attack on of the biggest day of his life, or he had just laid eyes on his Soulmate. _______
Competitive swimmer Lance McClain feels his Timer counting down right when he's about to jump in the water and finish up his race. He's faced with two choices in this moment: Continue the race and miss meeting his Soulmate at their fateful time or abandon his life's work for someone he never met.Lance makes his choice and has to suffer the consequence of never getting back what he missed out on. Or does he?
Swimmers Ocean Eyes by spacezuko Lance himself doesn't even believe in his own abilities. He is drowning in his own pool of desire to be everything that he claims he is. Everything that he wants to be. Keith wonders if he’s broken Lance because he doesn't say a word, his eyes filled with something opaque that Keith can't quite pinpoint the meaning of. Lance’s eyes are a deep blue. Not the typical morning sky blue, but the kind of ocean blue one wants to drown in.
With legs like these by Queerswimming In which Lance finds out that there's a pool in the castle and challenges Keith to a race.
Lance did NOT think this through. Because not a single thing in this universe could’ve prepare him for the sight of Keith in nothing but a red pair of swimming trunks.
Keith has one arm bend behind his head and stretches it with the other. His back arches beautifully, presenting Lance a perfect view of his well-defined torso. At least the last thing Lance sees right before he dies are those ripped abs.
Football Mistakes were made by Lynn1998 Lance can't stand the captain of the football team…so why is he having sex with him? Part 1 of skinny band nerd takes it up the ass from the beefcake football captain series
Ice Skating/Hockey On Thin Ice (WIP) by Minadora Once upon a time, two Canadian nerds decided to start a figure skating au about their two space sons and their wonderful misfit friends. Ten pages of headcanons later we finally put electronic pen to electronic paper and created this monstrosity.
This multi-chapter fic chronicles the lives of a hockey player named Keith who gets forcibly enlisted into figure skating lessons by his brother, Shiro, to "work on his footwork". There he meets a pompous - yet talented - figure skater named Lance and gets swept away by both the sport and the skater.Enjoy the ride because it's only just started.
Kiss My Ice (WIP) by delictor Lance hasn't skated in a year since the accident that cost him the Olympics. Keith can't skate for shit but that doesn't stop him from catching Lance's attention, even when he can't so much as stand up after falling on the ice.
'When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.'
“Soon as we're off this ice you're dead.” Keith's threat is an empty one and he knows Lance can tell by the way he laughs at it. “Serious question though, do you not know who I am?” Lance questions. “Should I?” “No, I guess not.” Lance shrugs. “I'm gonna twirl you, okay?” “No, no don't—wait!” Keith cries out as he's suddenly viewing the entire arena and his legs go rigid before colliding into Lance's chest, his chest rising and falling with laughter, hands gripping Keith's upper arms gently. “Put me back on land.” “Technically, we are on land.” “We're on frozen water, get me off it.”
Quidditch (Non Hogwarts AU) The Marks We Make (WIP) by wittyy_name Lance McClain constantly dreams of the day he'll finally meet his mysterious soulmate. They don't say much, if anything at all, but they leave him with gorgeous paintings temporarily tattooing his skin. It's not exactly the situation he hoped for, but when he feels the connection between them, he can't bring himself to resent them. As much as he wishes his soulmate would just talk to him, he's resigned himself to being patient. In the meantime, he has a loving family and good friends to help him get by.
Keith Kogane dreads the day he'll finally meet his obnoxious soulmate. He's just an art student who's struggling to find his place in the world. There's so much he hasn't been able to control in his life, and the thought of having a soulmate, just another thing in his life which he also has no control over yet can't do anything about, is a little terrifying. So he ignores the words that occasionally appear on his skin. He has other things to focus on: like being a new student at a big university where his childhood friend and step-brother go.
Surfers (mostly surfer!Lance) Should I Stand Up on Fear (And Tell You How I Feel?) by Lulatic “So, it’s really a good thing that Lance got distracted before he dragged you out there with him,” Hunk chuckled. “I guess flirting became more important than your guys’ rivalry.’
Keith blushed again, looking away with a huff. “Yeah, whatever. He’ll probably be distracted long enough that I can go back to the Castle before he decides I need some surfing lessons.”
Pidge laughed, that kind of cheeky giggle that made Keith and Hunk look over at them with wide eyes. Pidge raised a single eyebrow at Keith, grinning mischievously. “Oh, but you won’t be going back to the Castle any time soon, now will you? Not when Lance is out there, soaking wet, wearing nothing but a pair of swimming trunks.”
Pride Tide by lemoninagin He’d stared up, watched the differing patches of sunlight play the most stunning array of colored patterns across Keith’s pale face as he grinned mischievously over him. Time slowed, his own breathing became laboured and caught in his throat.
“You can teach me, right?” Keith had asked in a shyer voice than usual, brushing the tangled mess of his windswept hair away from his eyes and cocking his head towards the boards.
Save his smile by Queerswimming Keith wants to protect Lance's smile and finds his answer at the beach. Starring an awkward Keith, Surfer Lance and Hunk playing a giant ice berg.
Lance caresses the wood gently. His eyes turn soft as he speaks. “My big brother taught me how to build a board.” He laughs softly. “I always messed it up though. I wasn't patient enough to do it right." He taps on the wood and looks at Keith with a sad smile that knocks the breath out of Keith lungs.
“Who would have thought that I would build a surf board in space though.”
He laughs at that but Keith can tell that Lance is faking it. He always can.
Roller Derby Like Devo by surveycorpsjean As rival jammers, they're rough, skating around the rink, giving bruises, bloody noses, broken ribs and snapped fingers-
But when the cops show up, Keith grabs his hand and yanks Lance into the storm drain.
And thats how they start dating.
Streetracing Purple Lamborghini by warschach “I need you to focus on this race. No more hate flirting with Keith as much as I enjoy it. I like winning more.”
He scoffed, “I don’t flirt.”
“Then stop saying you’re going to teach him how to ride.”
“I was talking about driving. Duh,” Lance countered with an attitude mastered purely by Valley girls and entitled customers.
“Yea, Lance it doesn’t come off like that at all. It sounds like you’re gonna fuck him.”
“I’m not.”
ARTISTS (also including Musicians and Modeling)
Photographer Pretty Boy by MilkTeaMiku (photographer!Keith) A pretty Spanish boy shoves a bouquet of flowers under his nose and tells him to stop and smell the roses, so Keith does.
Roommates by manamune (photographer!Lance, artist!Keith) (13:24) Lance: Thank you!! Love you, Keith!!!
(13:55) Keith: I’m screenshotting that for the next time you deny it.
Sight for Sore Eyes by writewild Photographer!Lance's deadline for the magazine he works on the side for is coming up really soon, and has to search last-minute photo opportunities soon. One boy catches his eye.
Riptide by songsofthespring (photographer!keith, surfer!Lance) Keith fumbles with the camera around his neck and lines up a shot. The boy coasting down a wave, one hand kissing the water. Keith zooms in as far as his lens will allow him. Droplets frame the boy’s brown skin and cling to his hair and chest. His eyes, little pinpricks of light from this distance, are nevertheless still recognizably as bright as the ocean itself. It looks like he could be dancing when he rides a wave; every part of his lanky frame seems to merge with the board and the ocean beneath him.
He’s beautiful.
Foreign Scenes  by bwyn Lance has been dreaming of travelling since the first time he heard stories from his family as a child. Now, having finally the time and money to do it, he goes on a trip to Europe to see some of the most culturally rich cities on the continent. Except he keeps bumping into the same guy over and over again, in random cities, doing stupid shit, and ultimately dragging Lance into his trouble, too.
Basically an AU in which Lance and Keith become impromptu travel buddies and get into trouble.
Artist 7 Days to Fall For You by saiikavon (artist!Keith, ballerina!Lance)
Keith is an art student who mostly keeps to himself, taking note of the beauty in life but keeping his distance from it. This includes the beautiful dancer he sees across the street from his apartment...until a week-long art project pushes him to change that.
(For Klance Secret Santa 2016)
And Now You’re Mine (WIP) by Samyx914 (some artist!Keith) “No, really. I’ve been thinking about that movie since I got up and that’s the only copy they have and I want it.”
“But, I was faster.”
“But, I want to watch it.” The stranger laughs.
“Well, you could always come home with me to watch it.” He says with a wink.
“Okay.” The stranger’s eyes widen. What the fuck, Keith? No. You don’t go home with strangers… Anymore.
In which Keith wants to watch a movie, so he goes to find it at Walmart. When there's only one copy left and someone else picks it up first, his only option is to go home with a stranger. Keith didn't count on this stranger being so easy to fall for.
Visions by becca2793 "It’s funny, because as a tattoo artist he makes art that lasts pretty much forever – as far as the person who has it is concerned – but a street artist…their art lasts maybe a couple of days."
Keith comes in for a tattoo; Lance immediately falls in love. With his art. His love for Keith comes later.
Take the Easel Way Out by svensationalist Oh no, he’s hot, Lance thinks while he’s dying.
(Pidge elbows Lance sharply a little while later. “You’re not dying, dumbass,” they whisper. “Pay attention, the pose started.”)
***
Written for klanceweek day 1, “Red/Blue”. Art class AU where Lance can’t focus because one of the new life drawing models is too attractive.
Cute as Fcuk by anonymouschupacabra Even though he had never seen the hot guy before in the year that he'd been going to college, it was like the dam had broken, because Lance saw him everywhere. From the sculpture rooms, to the library, to the cafeteria, the guy was everywhere Lance was, and it only made it that much harder to ignore the hot buzzing he felt inside every time he saw him.
Dancers 7 Days to Fall For You by saiikavon (ballerina!Lance) see above ^
i bet you look good on the dance floor by xShieru "So like in 'Step Up'?" Allura shrugs. "Now that you put it like that - yes. I guess it's just like in 'Step Up'." The smile that she sends Shiro's way - followed by a shy wave, eugh - is sickening to say the least, and Lance still doesn't believe in dance camps
.-
Lance McClain's dancing career begins and ends with Keith.
Keith just wants to find out what Lance's deal is.
you raise me up by rhapsodyinpink “What, you don’t think I look like Patrick Swayze?”
Keith snickers. “Absolutely not. You are Jennifer Grey in this situation.”
“That’s a fair point. Nobody puts me in a corner,” replies Lance, nodding seriously, before his expression turns mischievous.
“So then...are you saying you want to call me Baby?”
Keith flushes red, but stands his ground as he leans in closer. “Are you saying you want me to?”
Shut Up and Dance With Me (WIP) by wittyy_name Lance and his friends have been regulars at the Altea Dance Studio for years. Not just for classes, but to hang out, practice, and spend time with good people who love dancing. Every year, they audition to be one of the few representing Altea at the regional dance competition. Lance always auditions solo, but this year he misses out on auditions and blows his chance to participate. And so does his self-proclaimed rival, Keith.
Luckily, Shiro comes up with a brilliant plan: convince Lance and Keith to audition as a duo.
With a little convincing, and a lot of effort, these two might just be able to pull it off and go to regionals... or they might crash and burn.
Musicians That Would Be Alright by icedsonder And call it spur of the moment, his exacerbated pining over past few months, or even his own alcohol impaired judgment, but Keith let his inhibitions take a backseat as he took a step forward and pressed his forehead against Lance’s to sing his next lines.
"I know I'll fall in love with you, baby"
Musically Insane by myparadisepalace It had only taken Lance three days after becoming the blue paladin to realize there were no instruments in the castle. And even if there were, Lance figured they’d be too obscure and strange for him to be able to play.
PROFESSIONS (i.e. cops, doctors, EMTs, waiters)
Soldiers/Assassins/Spies Counting in Code by DLanaDHZ There was no one better in the field. The Voltron Force was efficient and deadly, and they took no new recruits. They were hand-picked, and though they didn't always get along, they were family. Under the stress of a mission, the team counted each other as a way to calm down and focus. But Keith couldn't count, because counting meant he knew where everyone was, and right now all he had was a pair of bloody dog tags in place of his partner.
blink if you want me by xShieru He wakes up to Pidge’s face hovering above him. “You gotta stop running into him like this.” “Dude, he fucking shot me.” “I know. We saw.”
-
A hitmen AU wherein two thirsty assholes fall for each other and then jeopardize their respective missions because of it.
Retail/Food (waiters/cashiers/clerks) Melt With You by dumpsterdiva If you ask Keith what summer means to him, he’ll say shitty weather, a bag of quarters, sticky blue raspberry kisses, and not-quite-midnight sandwiches.
Summer job AU at the pier feat. Keith as a shaved ice slave and Lance as an aquarium camp counselor.
You Dropped a Bomb by quartetship Lance loved his job.
OR: The Klance LUSH au
Tollbooth Operator Drive Me Crazy by battleshidge Keith stared blankly at the tollbooth operator for a moment before trying to stifle a groan. Somehow, he always managed to get the booth with the flirtatious attendant, a lanky brown-haired man with clear blue eyes and a confident grin. It didn’t matter that he changed what lane he went through—at least three times a week on his way home from work, Keith was forced to suffer through the horrendous flirts that this man tossed his way.
Taxi Driver Finish What You Started by battleshidge “You were right,” Keith breathed, looking up at Lance with a fire in his eyes. “I did start this,” he lifted his chin, pressing a soft kiss to Lance’s jaw. And another. And another. Lance thought it was torture—sweet, sweet torture. And then that challenge sparked in Keith’s eyes again as he asked, tone low and resonant, “Are you going to finish it?”
Pizza Delivery You Stole a Pizza My Heart by KaSaPe Keith just wanted a pizza. The cute delivery boy with the weird grin and stupid flirting (?) had other plans.
Or: Keith just doesn't get Lance's flirting. At all.
Lifeguards six foot dive (WIP) by shizuoh "I'm bisexual," Lance says.
Keith furrows his eyebrows. "Good... for you?"
"I'd like to buy you a drink," he starts, and grins, "and then get sexual."
Keith shoves him into the water.
(or: lance and his family go to california for a two-month vacation. cue hot lifeguard keith gyeong-kogane.)
Lessons by amycoolz and SylviaW1991 Keith has been nothing but a thorn in Lance's side since the mullet-haired ass first walked into the classroom. But when he decides to get himself shoved into the deep end and, wow, can't even swim, Lance has to save his pretty self and then Pidge volunteers him to teach Keith how to swim. Great. Just great.
Nurse Racing Heartbeats and Hospital Bedsheets by screwtodayimsleeping (nurse!Keith) Me: Hunk Me: Buddy Me: emergency!!!! HunkyBae: what’s up, lance? Are they not letting you out of the hospital yet? Me: HUNK Me: the male nurse that took my blood was probably the sexiest person i’ve ever seen Me: and im literally wearing two sheets as an outfit
BUSINESSES (e.g. Coffeeshop, flower shop, animal shelter)
Office eyes wide to you with wonder by aknightley Keith doesn't dislike his job, but he definitely dislikes Lance. Probably. Maybe.
"Coran thinks you'll bang at the Christmas party but I think that's giving you guys way too much credit," Pidge says thoughtfully. "Hunk is a romantic. He thinks Lance is gonna ask you out any day now. I think he's got a week or so before he owes me like a hundred bucks."
"Pidge, what the fuck?" Keith says, flustered. He nudges them again with his foot, this time slightly harder. They scowl at him, swatting him away. "Why would you bet on me and Lance?" Part 1 of Office AU
Flower Shop i’ll gift you the stars by Kyoshu_Koi Flowers and stars. At least they were giving him things he liked.
Cactus by PinkHitman When Keith moves from the desert in the middle of ass backwards nowhere, to plop in the middle of the big city, he doesn't expect to instantly grow fond of the tall, endearing, jerk across the street. But it's hard not to see roses when said person works in a flower shop.
Arcade got game by warschach Lance hates his job until the one day he doesn't.
Bakery you’re so sweet; will you be mine?  by jojotext A new bakery pops up right across the street from Lance's bakery. . . . In which Lance is an idiot, Keith is an asshole, and Pidge is the next Dr. Phil.
Coffeeshop nothing’s quite as sweet by dimpleforyourthoughts and thebrotherswinchester Keith is a barista who hates his job. Lance works at the cat shelter across the street.
SOCIAL MEDIA (Tumblr AU, bloggers, Youtubers, gamers)
Youtubers you had me at merlot by DJAlien “Oh my God,” Lance says as he covers his face. Keith’s tinny voice blares from his laptop speakers: “What do you call a fake noodle? An impasta.” See, this joke might have been funny if someone charismatic and charming had said it, but Keith’s flat voice and even flatter expression effectively kidnaps, tortures, and then decapitates any chance of it being remotely humorous.
--
Keith accidentally starts a YouTube channel. Lance, of course, refuses to be left out. It goes about as well as you'd expect. (Ft. copious amounts of wine and a truly shameless number of references to MyDrunkKitchen, DailyGrace, and general pop culture)
The Boyfriend Tag by theoddpacolypse Keith and Lance are famous YouTubers, along with the rest of their friends, and though they consider each other "rivals" in some ways, they are actually incredibly close. So close that they are actually dating in secret and constantly dropping hints to their fans, whom desperately want them together. Part 1 of What Happens on Youtube series
Gamers Next Level (WIP) by battleshidge “Dammit, Blue, don’t die on us yet! We only just started!”
Red’s voice snapped in his ears, and Lance cursed under his breath. He tried to backpedal quickly, but being flat on his back with the enemy looming above made for certain movement limitations. On top of that, he was already injured, and he could see the red patch spreading across his thigh. He could really use some of Hunk’s portable healing pods, that was for sure. And that, Lance observed, was a very nasty looking knife that was about to plunge straight through his chest.
Well, shit.
Effect: +100% Love, -100% Logic (WIP) by manamune In the real world, Lance is barely making it by in his senior year. He's failing most of his classes and is only one more fuck up away from being kicked off the swim team.
In the virtual reality game Voltron, Lance lives an entirely different life as the internationally-known Blue, an archer with impeccable aim. He's filthy rich, has a trillion friends, and is a part of the most feared guild in the game. There's just one problem: he's madly in love one of his guildmates, Red.
Things begin to go downhill when a kid who acts suspiciously similar to Red transfers to Lance's school.
Bloggers a recipe for two by battleshidge He wondered, briefly, what the look on Lance’s face would be if he actually did say yes.
It’s Mutual (Follow Back Already) by JessicaMDawn At twenty-four, Keith decides to figure out what this 'tumblr' thing is. It's confusing at first, but Keith learns to have fun with it with help from a few new friends. AKA Keith's adventures on tumblr.

Michael Phelps did an ab workout with his 2-year-old son boomer
Michael Phelps did an ab workout with his 2-year-old son boomer
According to The Baltimore Sun, Phelps used to swim about 80,000 meters every week before retiring, and Livestrongreported that the swimmer would complete a 30 minute stretching routine and a 45 minutes warm-up swim before race days.
As an Olympian, world record holder, and what some might say the greatest swimmer of all time, Michael Phelps is no stranger to intense workouts.

Michael Phelps on his Shark Week showdown, his love of the ocean, and why he hasn't slowed down since retirement
It almost sounds like a stunt dreamed up on a playground: What would happen if the fastest swimmer in the world raced a great white shark?
That's exactly the goal with Great Gold vs. Great White, the upcoming Discovery Channel Shark Week special in which Michael Phelps is set to take on one of the deadliest predators in the ocean.
Yes, really.
But the question remains: Why would the greatest U.S. Olympian in history put his reputation on the line against, y'know, an actual fish—let alone one with hundreds of teeth? Men's Fitness sat down with Phelps to find out. Here's his take.
Men's Fitness: Is there any possible preparation you could do before the race?
Michael Phelps: You just watch that animal. It's basically like swimming next to a school bus in the water. I think that kind of got me more intrigued to see what other sharks I can swim with. When I had the opportunity to be on a Shark Week show, it was an absolute no-brainer, and an instant yes from me, just because it was something on my bucket list to do. It was an amazing opportunity for me to learn more about sharks, which I'm already infatuated with.
It was the experience: Coming face-to-face with a 13' hammerhead, or being in a cage and watching multiple great whites just fly around me, and not attack the cage. They would kind of bite at the cage, just what they normally do. I basically had an eight-foot great white almost come nose-to-nose with me in the cage. That was an opportunity and an experience that I never thought I'd have. It was pretty gnarly, and pretty unbelievable, just to see.
You posted on Instagram that you've always wanted to dive with sharks. When did this become an interest of yours?
I mean, this has probably been 15 or 16 years where I've really wanted to do this. I've always been a massive fan of Shark Week, and watched every year. This is something that's always around a major meet for me, so it's something that helps me relax a little bit. Now, being able to experience them in their own habitat actually makes me even hungrier to want to see more. I've only been able to see about 5-10 different species, and we have more than 500 species of sharks in the water, all over the world. I'm kind of just scratching the surface.
Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to see more and free- or scuba dive with a white. If you're in 30'-40' of water, you can actually just lay on the bottom, and take the element out of the surprise attack from a great white, because they always love coming from underneath of you to come straight up. That's why we have all these amazing breach photos that we see all over the world. There are a lot of things I still want to do with sharks. Hopefully, some of the things that I've learned, we can pass along to other people, and help them preserve the wildlife that we have all over the world. There are too many people that are out there killing sharks, and that's something that needs to stop.

The race will take place around the one-year anniversary of your last competitive race. What have you been doing the past year to stay in shape? Have you taken it easy, or ramped it up in some instances?
During the first couple months, I kind of took off. I raced at about 195, 200 (lbs) at the Olympic games—that was my fighting weight. I'm anywhere between 210 and 215. I was kind of lazy the first couple months and wanted to just enjoy retirement, and live life a little bit. Recently, I've started to realize that health and wellness are very large parts of my life, and it helps me be more productive. For me, it is eating a little better, a little different than I was in the past. I'm not burning as many calories as I did in the pool.
I'm still working out, anywhere between five and six days a week. I've been lifting a little bit more, because when I was swimming I never lifted much for my arms. It was all legs. I was a very leg-driven swimmer, and now I have the chance to do some more, whether it's a bench press, or more with free weights, and stuff that I never had the chance to do.
I saw a workout that [Dwayne] "The Rock" [Johnson] did to get ready for Hercules. Honestly, I did it, and it kicked my ass. It destroyed me—absolutely destroyed me, but it was something that was good, in a way, just because it challenged me to be different, outside of the pool. I've always spent my time in the water, and now I have the opportunity to do different things. I'm in the process, now, of building my own gym, and looking for a space to rent, and kind of have my own escape, almost, really, like what The Rock does. He's able to escape from life for a little bit and get some time in the gym, as we all see. I have an ideal weight that I'd like to hit. If I can stay around 210, but just be a little bit leaner than I am now, that's what I'm really trying to do. Also, I'm just trying to manage time. I have so much going on outside of the pool, and outside of my business life. It's making sure to take time, when I need it, to get a workout in that'll make me more productive, and will make me a better dad, will make me a better husband. Just basically, it's a balancing act, and I think we all go through that.
youtube
What would having that gym for yourself mean to you?
It's basically a private little place that, when I do go to the gym and I want to work out, I can. I'd rather go in and get my work done that I need to, and kind of not, potentially, be bothered in between a set of squats, or somebody wants to take a photo. I don't mind taking photos, but when I'm there, I want to lift, and I want to get my job done. I do have goals for myself. That's how I've been able to reach the success that I've had, and, for me, I would like to get around 210 and stay around 210, but I don't want to be as lean as I was last year. I mean, I was at 4.5% body fat last year, and that's so low.
That, for me, is not a healthy spot, not where I'd like to be. I'd like to be shredded. I'd like to have some abs, and have some definition. We have a goal, and it'll obviously take some time. Just getting in the habit of getting up early, before Boomer gets up, and try to get a workout in. It makes it tough, at times, when you're traveling so much. If I have a goal that's big enough, that'll motivate me, that's what'll help me get out of bed. I think that's what I have, right now.

You've clearly been watching your food more than when you were racing. Is there anything that you've indulged in, post-career?
No, not really. After 2012, I went from 185lbs to 235, with really doing nothing. I, basically, just got out of shape and didn't really care. Then, that led me to not being in a very happy place, and leading me to a dark place. I know what that feels like, and it's something I never want to happen again. It's that challenge and that motivation to always keep me going, on certain things. It's just fun. For me, life is a lot more fun and enjoyable now, than, really, it ever has been. I think part of that is me coming back, and finishing my career in 2016 in Rio, like I did.
Describe what your meals consist of nowadays.
I don't eat much red meat, just because I know it's hard for a body to break it down. I still eat a lot of fish and chicken. My snack days, I think that's probably the biggest and hardest thing is I want to snack, snack, snack. For me, it's all back to my goals. I'm about to eat a chicken Caesar salad. Nothing too exciting, but it's what I want. I eat a lot of salads now, eat a lot of chicken, eat a lot of fish. I had a great meal last night. My mom sent us some Baltimore crabs that we enjoyed last night. It was amazing. We had some crab, some shrimp, some French fries, and it kind of brought me back to my childhood back in Baltimore. Just kind of a nice, summer day. It was amazing that that was something I still enjoy. I still love a hamburger from time to time, but it's not something that I'm eating five days a week.
I always think about it this way: Your body is a high-performance car, and we want to put the best fuel into that car that you possibly can. There are times I want to eat a couple Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, but I know that if I do that there could be consequences with it. I do have a sweet tooth, and I am trying to stay on working out as much as I can. We just did a spin class yesterday. Oh my gosh, I was in so much pain afterwards, and I've never sweat that much in my life. It's cool doing things differently now than I ever did when I was training. I don't want to do the same routine that I did for 15-20 years. I want to try different things to see what really excites me. I think that's something that my trainer tried to do over the last couple years of my career, because I got bored. I want this to be enjoyable. I want to have fun doing what I'm doing, and not feel like it's a job.
What was the spin class like for you?
The place was called CycleBar, and it's a place here in Scottsdale, AZ. We took a teacher-run hill class where we'd try and keep certain RPMs. There were 20 people in the room, and it was fun. It was myself, my wife, Nicole, my training partner, Allison Schmitt, and a buddy of mine, Grant, who's been visiting from Australia for a couple of months. We were basically just trying to compete to see who could get the highest score, and, out of the 10 people, we were top four. I guess the competitiveness is still there, when we're fighting to beat each other. It's always good to have friends like that, that we can compete with, especially to push one another. That's something that I've had for so long, and something that I need, at times. It's always good to have a good support team, and a good group of friends to help you out.
Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White airs on July 23 at 8 p.m. on The Discovery Channel.
