Anyways it’s really cool that marvel had a character who was suddenly introduced into a new timeline where they didnt previously exist and has to deal with the ramifications of that alongside the loss of their previous mentor figure and friends.

And its really on brand that they barely explored any of that with miles and made up a new white boy with some extra fanfiction style sad ritz to have that storyline instead 🤡

This is a highly personal opinion of mine, so feel free to ignore this if you disagree with it (please), but...

I really do wish that Volo's title of 'Wielder' would ultimately turn out to not be as big of an issue as it may seem on the surface. During my first playthrough of LA, my belief was Wielder is simply an old world term from his Celestican background that is more or less the equivalent of Trainer.

The fact Volo also refers to the protagonist as a Wielder supported this belief in my mind. I loved that, because it felt like he was sharing a piece of his culture in that moment. He actually wasn't so different. Perhaps the Celesticans did see their Pokémon as weapons as well, but can someone not sincerely love their weapon? Can Volo not love his Togekiss as Link does the Master Sword??

Also again, this opinion is highly personal, but... this word, Wielder, that is implied to be from Volo's culture, which is established as being important to him, being framed as primitive and wrong in comparison to the modern Trainer when Volo clearly loves his Togepi, I can't help but feel that has some... unfortunate connotations.

I feel like instead of scrapping the old EU Star Wars should have done an 616/Ultimate Universe like Marvel did. Basically, the way it would work would be they classify the old EU as the equivalent of the 616. While the Disney Canon is the equivalent of the Ultimate Universe. The old EU much like the 616 universe has its own very long lore and continuity and might be considered intimidating to newcomers. The Disney Canon much like the Ultimate Universe is considered more approachable but also takes stuff from their forebears (The Old EU/616 universe) and does their own thing with it. I think it makes sense and both fit their respective categories well.

In the end there's no point in staying - the only prize for winning this competition was clout. You both take up Sol on his offer, Dessa more enthusiastically than you.

It's easy enough to lead the way to the library but you fumble when it's time to find books on weather - you've only used Deema's before.

Sol pats you on the shoulder sympathetically and goes to speak with a librarian while you and Dessa find a table.

'You have a real talent for poking holes in solutions, Dessa,' he says when he returns, a small stack of books in his arms. He doesn't sound the least bit annoyed.

'I have to! Almost everything's written for you coastal folk. I make so many notes in my books I basically wrote them. You coastal folks have it easy.' She giggles behind her hand at Sol's surprise. 'It's true! I don't have the sea to moderate temperature.'

That hadn't occurred to you; you've lived by the sea all your life. You jot that down in your notebook.

'And altitude,' Sol says. 'Air gets thinner and colder the higher you go.'

'And if there's, say, valleys where cold air pools,' Dessa continues.

Sol nods along as he flips through a book. 'Rain shadow, valleys, basins... all things you look out for where you are?'

She nods confirmation.

They carry on while you flip through the book in front of you. It has more detail than you think you'll ever need, but you diligently take notes regardless. Who knows what you might need to know when finding Deema's samples?

An hour passes and the library closes. Your notebook is full of notes to go over... but you think you can also get your mittens finished tonight.

@/SpiderKnightART on Twitter posted an open document where folks could feel free to post pitches/ideas for what they described as “a DC Comics equivalent to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe”. My interest was piqued, so I submitted an idea! I took what most folks think when they hear “Ultimate U”*, ie playing with characters, setting, tone, etc, and made a Plastic Man premise with it, covering the first 10-12 issues.

*Minus, of course, the unsavory bits that are messed up.

So, without further ado, I present: Ultimate Plastic Man!

Thug Patrick “Patch” O’Brian has spent the entirety of his young life being miserable and aimless, hoping to find purpose, especially after he’s orphaned. In his latest prison stint, Eel volunteers for an experiment funded by the Ryder Corporation, searching for immortality in many different ways, a “throw spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks” type of approach. Patch is injected with something called only “The Crawford Chemical”, and then has all his bones broke at once, hoping for a mutative reaction.

Well, it succeeds. The Crawford Chemical works. But works too well, and transforms the young man into a pliable freak. He escapes from Ryder Corp with new powers, but lacking tight grip on reality, Patch goes on the lam. While hiding, he realizes that his body is now capable of elasticity, shape shifting, and even density control, all of which he’ll be able to master the longer he lives… which now seems like it’ll be a looooooong time.

A mysterious new friend, that only talks to him and who may or may not be real, convinces Patch to use these new “gifts” to right his wrongs. He starts with those he’s directly affected, which grows into an expanding list of people asking for favors and help. Throughout this time, Patch becomes a local hero to the small city of Mammoth, Illinois, even taking up the new name Plastic Man.

However Ryder Corp has different plans, and begins to send their failed, now-dying other prisoner experiments after “Plas”, in hopes that securing him will ensure their survival. Among them are freaks like Lady Granite, Doctor Forklift, The Clam, Half-Ape, and Thrilla. With all of these super freaks after our pliable pal, and even the US government putting an close eye on him, will Plastic Man be able to make it? Or will he be made into silly putty?

Ultimate Plastic Man would be a mix, story and tone wise, of the superhero adventure story, slapstick comedies, anti-corporate conspiracy, Don Quixote, My Name Is Earl, and The Toxic Avenger.

This isn’t what I’d do if I got the chance to pitch for Plas in the main DCU, a reboot, a movie or tv series, or even an Earth One story (despite the similarities to UU), this is just what I’d go for with an Ultimate Universe take on Plas.
