while criston cole has an incredibly warped and misogynistic view of rhaenyra, he wasn't wrong about alicent being a good person at heart. unlike in the book, alicent isn't just upset at aemond for killing lucerys due to her fear of rhaenyra's wrath, but she genuinely feels sorrow over her former best friend losing her son. the scene of her lighting a candle for lucerys speaks SO MUCH for who she really is as a person under all the warped thinking and manipulation her father has spoon-fed to her for years
