My Archive of Our Own Wrap-up

I wanted to put together a thank you to all the fanfic writers who have gotten me through this year.

This wrap-up is me going through my history month by month to see which fics I’d visited the most (because you can be damn sure I read through them over several days, again and again).

So this is a celebration of the wide variety of fics I’ve read and/or bookmarked and/or subscribed to. Thank you to every writer on this list for keeping me entertained.

To every fanfic writer I've had the pleasure of reading the words of, and there are so many more of you than just this list of people, I want to thank you so very much of trusting your creativity to us readers. You are my rock, my joy, my comfort, and so many other supporting adjectives that I just want to give you all hugs and money for the holidays.

My first fic of 2024: dismantle the sun by StarryCleric

Summary:

Beau shudders and holds Caleb's hand, which he squeezes back tentatively. She can feel how it shakes in her grip. She does her best to steady him, despite the fact that she wants to shake apart herself and completely fall to pieces. “I am going to hazard a guess here,” Caleb says softly, “that we may have been drugged.” --- Tonight was supposed to be a fun night off. Unfortunately for Beau and Caleb, the universe has other plans.

He slipped his own hand beneath the table and found Victor’s. Hidden from sight, their fingers began to flirt and play. A secret conversation all their own that needed no words. Yuuri was aware that at some point—a moment in time he couldn’t quite place—Victor had become his boyfriend. There wasn’t a single instant when it happened. It was a slow awareness, as if Victor had silently been asking the question for months now, and Yuuri had been giving him the answer a little more with each passing day.

Summary:

Summary:

She’s hot. She’s not usually hot. Blankets can be kicked off, but not this time. She’s also sore. She’s not usually sore, either. Muscles can be tender after battle, but not this time. Vex prys one bleary eye open, attempting to take in her surroundings. It’s her bed: check. Her room: check. Her blanket: check. A warm body next to her: check? A heavy arm draped over her belly: check?! Both eyes open now (literally and figuratively), she slowly rotates her head on the pillow to look at the foreign body next to her, smiling when she sees a floof of light-colored hair tucked carefully next to her shoulder. Critical Role (The Mighty Nein), rated T. Completed 2022-04-06.

Of all the ways Essek thought he might find himself staring down mortality, his magic making a cancer of his lonely heart never even entered his consideration. But then, his calculus has never been able to account for the Mighty Nein. There is a remedy for his illness, of course. There is always a way to unwind magic, but there is always a price. The cost of Essek’s life, now that he’s contracted Hanahaki’s disease, can be paid two ways—one is higher than Essek can bear and the other, well. The other can only be paid by someone else. And if Essek could ask that, then he wouldn’t be sick at all, would he?

Baldur's Gate, rated M. Last Updated 2024-02-16.

Echo has lived her life tucked away in the forests of Tethir, learning magic through the pulse of nature and the songs of creation. She's good with magic, but not people, which isn't really a problem until she's scooped up by mind flayers and has to get along with six strangers lest they all share a tentacle-y doom. And she manages to get along with most of them -- but then there's Gale of Waterdeep. Despite a terrible first impression, she finds he is actually much kinder than all the mansplaining would suggest. This is a series of relationship scenes about my weird little mushroom hermit, a wizard who shows compassion and arrogance really can coexist, and how academic rivalry is like first base for wizards. Spoilers up to Act 2 for main plot and Gale's romance.

Last chapter of this fic is up! Hope you guys had as much fun as I did. I'm gonna try something different this time and put the taglist under the cut, here are the first lines:

The first part of the trip through hyperspace was quiet, which Hera had expected. It was an hour or two before they dropped out at the Sereeda Waypoint, and Hera quickly began the calculations to make their secondary jump.

“Hera,” Kanan said quietly. It wasn’t the first time he’d spoken—Hera had explained exactly what Ezra had gotten himself into this time, and they’d talked about that a little—but it still surprised her. “We should talk.”

Oh. Well, that’s new. Hera sent a quick glance at him, trying to read what she could see of his face. His mouth was set, his jaw tight in the way that meant he was upset about something. Less than promising.

But they did need to talk, and if Kanan was finally initiating things, that was hopefully a good thing. “Okay,” she said. “Let me make the jump to Yarma before the Mining Guild shows up, and then we’ll talk.”

Wake up girlies new Steve Miller Au fic just dropped!

The Outer Rim was home to many planets that had the same story. To an outsider’s eyes, they were all just backwater planets that were now given the honor of the Empire’s presence. But to the residents, it was an occupation, one they fought back against to varying degrees.

Lothal was one such planet. As was B’bel, a beautiful—if rather rainy—planet that the Empire had occupied for years now. Other than the cabarets and nightclubs that were popular among the Imperial troops, the main source of income on the planet was factory work. Which was where, on most days, Jyn found herself.

Part of the cell worked in the factories with her, making trackers for the Imperials, while the others ran a cabaret known as Lo’ie’s Follies. Jyn worked with those in the factory, and while she wasn’t incredibly close to them yet, she liked working with them. Jon, the gruff B’belan overseer, kept an eye on her, and was the one who’d introduced her to the rest of the cell.

Of course, she wasn’t known as Jyn, there. She went by Lyra Dume on this planet—she knew it was silly to use names that could be traced back to her. But she found herself unable to resist holding her family close to her.

So This Was A Little More Angsty Than I Recalled...

We’re probably both going to be bruised black and blue by the time this is over, Ezra thinks, blocking a hard swing and throwing it right back. The sun was setting when they started, and it’s nearly dark now.

Sabine’s eyes glow too gold for comfort in the dusky night. Just like he has every day for the last month, he bites his tongue and holds back his questions.

Hera and Zeb won’t tell him about whatever happened to Sabine on Malachor, Kanan and Okadiah are as lost as Ezra is, and if Ahsoka knows anything, she’s not telling. When Ezra brought it up to Mom and Dad, they just told him to be there for Sabine.

He’s been trying.

Sabine has not been cooperating.

So after a month of being there with no success, Ezra gave up and decided that it was time for some non-optional friendship bonding time, but even his best efforts at finding a so-bad-it’s-good holofilm like they used to watch together, even after making some really good movie snacks, all for her, she sulked and complained the whole time, being so—so—infuriating that before he knew it, they were yelling in each others’ faces about tropes.

Ezra stopped yelling, stopped the film, took her by the arm, dragged her outside into the Atollon landscape, and said that they were going to beat the crap out of each other.

(For Mandalorians, sparring is training, recreation, and even courtship. He figured… maybe it would work as therapy, too?)

He doesn’t feel bad about throwing the first punch, because she hit back twice as hard. Ezra thinks his lip is split from a hard hit to the front of his helmet, and Sabine’s knuckles are scraped raw and bloody. They circle each other, slower now than when they started. Her hair has blown out of her braid and sticks to her face in the heat.

It’s a little bit pretty, but now definitely isn’t the right time to think about that.

Sabine rolls one shoulder—he thinks it’s where he landed a decent punch.

“Had enough, tin can?” she demands, but the tension has started to drain from her body and she sounds a little closer to playful than he thought she could ever be again.

“Not if you’ve still got that attitude, wizard girl.”

“You’re gonna regret that,” Sabine warns. She settles into a stance, rocking a little, coiled like a spring.

“Probably,” Ezra agrees.

She draws a breath, and Ezra must have blinked or something, because in the space of an instant, she’s flown at him. He can barely see her in the dark and even the night vision in his helmet doesn’t help.

But he has a split second of advantage. In pure chance, she overextends, and he slams into her, sending them both tumbling through the Atollon dust.

She’s up on her feet again right away—or at least she would be, but Ezra snags her wrist, and drags her back down, flipping over so she’s neatly pinned beneath him.

All he needs is a knife to hold to her throat and it would be a near-perfect replica of the scene in the holofilm that started their stupid fight in the first place.

Sabine doesn’t say anything. She just lies on her back in the dust, looking up at him with the eyes that always seemed to see through his mask, but now they don’t look like they’re seeing anything. He hopes she’s processing her emotions and not disassociating.

Ezra is about to move off of her when something catches his eye, and he brushes some of her hair away from her face. It clings—not with sweat, but with blood. There’s a cut on her cheek.

“Did I hurt you?” he breathes, not sure what he’s even saying, and he draws away.

Flying up, her hand seizes his wrist, gripping painfully tight, even as her sharpening gaze fixes right where his eyes would be.

Ezra swallows dryly. The look she gives him is making him feel a thousand things that he doesn’t really want to sort out, now or ever.

“Sabine?” he asks. “What…”

He trails off. Her thumb slides to the little space between his glove and his sleeve, pulling the cloth back. Never looking away from his face, she pulls his arm up and softly kisses the pulse of his wrist.

“You’re dangerous, Ezra,” she smiles, breath on his skin.

Then, like the Spectre she is, Sabine is gone.

Speaking of Okadiah, I find it sad that hardly no one talks about him. I mean I know why, half the reason is because they don’t know he exists because they don’t like Rebels while the other half likes Rebels but never reads A New Dawn because they don’t even know it exists. It’s sad because Okadiah is a great character. His time was short but he impacted Kanan in a big way.

This line from the book always gets me:

Parents taught too, but without all the judging. Good parents anyway. And on that score, Okadiah had probably been more of father like than any of the other patrons Kanan had found in his travels.

Okadiah shows Kanan what is would have been like to have a father of his own and Kanan carried those skills when he took in Ezra. And did what Okadiah did and never judged Ezra, never pushed him, never tried to control Ezra’s attitude like the Council had with Anakin. And the idea that Okadiah taught Kanan all that without knowing a single scrap of Kanan’s history other then knowing he was a man in a lot of pain and shouldn’t be alone, is magnificent.

Okadiah was a great character. His death was so heartbreaking in the book. Even with his dying breath, he was looking out for Kanan, trying to convince Hera that Kanan was worth keeping around. Not wanting Kanan to be alone...

11. Who or what do you find yourself writing about most?

I really, really love character driven stuff and I think a lot of my writing, especially with fic, comes down to me wanting to understand a character more. I think I write a lot of things that could be considered mostly backstory and a lot of somewhat introspective stuff. In terms of who I write the most about, Kanan and Hera have to take the top spot, though Scott and Hope from the Ant-Man movies have recently found a sentimental spot in my heart if my AO3 page is any suggestion. Oh, and Jacen! I love that boy. 

13. First fandom you ever wrote for?

Rebels! At the very least, it’s the first one I remember writing for and the first fandom I actually posted fic for. I’m pretty sure when I was much younger and just getting into creative writing I wrote what was technically fanfic for a few other things, but I can’t seem to remember what they were now, nor do I know where those stories are now. Probably in a notebook buried somewhere.

18. Wildest fic you’ve ever written?

I really like a prompt that is actually a dare, so there’s a few that I would never have written if a friend hadn’t challenged me to. Maybe the Hermes/Hedwig one? There’s nothing actually wild in it, but the fact that I was writing basically sad never-quite-got-it-together doomed romance but for owls was new. Alternately the crack fics about Scabior and Greyback having to rough it in Muggle Florida. (I spent...several years in HP fic-writing circles so I just have a wide variety of material for that fandom).

30. Tooth-rotting fluff or merciless angst?

Tooth-rotting fluff. I try to write angst, and I read a fair amount of it, but I am so bad at letting characters really let go and be openly miserable because I myself am bad at this. Also, sometimes? You just want characters who’ve experienced honestly a lot of heartbreak to be happy.

A dead work in progress from one of my favorite author's WIP graveyard, it's just so interesting. It's a really nice one shot with an interesting premise.

Basically Kallus finds tiny Ezra and kinda trips into adopting him. So much changes, while so much stays the same. It's also told from Kallus's perspective, and the way Blue explores our favorite Agent's thought process? Phenomenal. Everything feels in character, and like this could conceivably happen this way.

Twelve thousand words of Star Wars women being amazing, and the Empire having so many bad days because the 327th ran out of condoms.

It's really well done, amazingly written, just ten out of ten.

Also, Tarkin gets pushed out an airlock. It's not a spoiler if it's literally one of the tags.

The Steve Miller/Spymaster AU by kanerallels

In which Kanan takes a different path after A New Dawn, one that's full of spycraft, slowburn romance, classic rock references, and waffles.

Also, he keeps adopting people. Because he's Kanan, what else is he going to do?

Starring: Kanan "Where are my adoption papers" Jarrus, Hera "How long can I avoid thinking about the fact I'm in love with this man" Syndulla, Janus "Just kiss her already" Kasimir, Okadiah "Uncle Iroh" Garson, and more!

Literally binged this fic in one day, and then immediately binge reread it.

The Legend of Liob by Killbothtwins

The 212th's attempt to take the piss out of a natborn war photographer somehow ends up saving the Republic.

Or, Liob is a very real soldier thank you for asking. He's totally responsible for kicking that droid's head off, and for saving a whole platoon of shinies, and for singlehandedly destroying a whole star destroyer. We'd promote him again, but we're running out of ranks.

A beautifully written fic about Finn's defection inspiring a Stormtrooper revolution.

I just— you know those fics, the ones that are so good you reread them over and over again? This is one of them.

It has redemption arcs, poly-romance, and is ultimately a story of love conquering hate. Love of family, love of friends, love of self, all are explored in this fic.

Dominoes by meridianpony

Time travel fics are like crack to me.

Domino squad is sent back in time from the moments of their deaths to Kamino, before they have their final exam.

This fic, so damn good.

The Dominoes are just trying to save their brothers, all their brothers, from the littlest tubies to the oldest ARCs. There's plenty of action, politics, and emotions.

This fic does an amazing job exploring the brotherhood within the GAR. It does these amazing, subtle things with clone culture and armor. It gives Droidbait, Cutup, and Hevy a chance to grow and develop. Please, read it, it's so good.

Sith Lord Swell by AMournfulHowlInTheNight

Time travel crack.

Luke and his students learn why you don't mess around with Sith artifacts when they find themselves back in time pre-Clone Wars. Naturally, the best course of action is to pretend to be a Sith Lord and his army of faithful apprentices.

Ben Solo decides after watching his Uncle parade around in a dramatic cape and a creepy mask that the Dark Side is kinda lame. Also, who the hell decided a lightsaber needed saber crossguards? He's gonna lose his hand to this thing!

Luminous by HopeofDawn

Ben Kenobi's not quite allowed to rest. When Luke succeeds where he failed, Ben expects to fade into the Force, to finally be one with all those he lost.

Instead Force Ghost Ben Kenobi winds up on Kamino several years in the past. He proceeds to become the vode's guardian angel.

A great fic, slow to update so you may have to reread between chapters, but with a fic like this that's not an issue. It's more of a benefit.

Vod'e An by Triscribe

Clones travel back in time after their deaths. It happens over time, but everyone shows up where and when they are needed. The Jedi were family too, in that dark future that shall-not-be, and family fights for family.

A great series, one that I was lucky enough to come across as it was updating. All nine parts are well written, and I cannot recommend this enough. If you love clone/jedi found family feels, then read this fic.

Living in Borrowed Time by smug_albatross

Ahsoka and Rex die, and then they wake up.

It's the Battle of Christophsis, and Rex has to actively keep himself from shooting his General. It's the Battle of Christophsis, and Ahsoka has to keep herself from flinching everytime she sees Anakin's face.

Ahsoka and Rex's friendship in this fic is so good. I love this fic. Another one that's slow to update, but it's worth it.

An AU where Rex is Force Sensitive.

I just, I love how this is done in this fic. Force Sensitive clone fics are my jam. Obi-Wan takes him on as a Padawan, and eventually Palpatine suffers. What more could you want?

I'm breaking an unspoken rule of this here fic rec list, and recommending a fic that's probably abandoned.

During the Zilobeast incident Chancellor Palpatine finds himself suffering from an acute case of death. Yeah, turns out releasing a giant unkillable death machine can have fatal consequences.

Fox, in an advanced state of sleep deprivation and also potentially suffering a caffeine overdose, digs up an old Republic Law that says in times of war killing the sitting Chancellor earns you their position.

Fox finds his new boss to be far more agreeable, and also somehow less scaly.

Great crack, if the author ever updates this one again I'll sacrifice my seventh born child to them (I already promised my first through sixth born to other people).

Double Agent Vader by Fialleril

You know, when someone tells you to get a hobby, they mean something like playing an instrument, learning to knit.

Shouto chooses to interpret it as "make a foot fetish porn chat bot and scam your father out of a lot of money".

The Weirwood Queen by RedWolf (redwolf17)

My favorite A Song of Ice and Fire fanfiction of all time.

Somehow the prompt "what if Sansa actually did push Joffrey of the wall of the keep" turned into a Wolf Shifter Sansa fanfic with a lot of actual historical research.

The Stark sisters bond and grow together. The Martells aren't just racist caricatures like you see in so many fanfics. Elia's got (metaphorical) fangs. There are multiple POV characters, all of which have their own beliefs/cultural bias/information or lack thereof.

It's a beautiful piece of writing. Plus, there's a whole original song for it, "The Honest Hand", which is phenominal and I think at a certain point the author includes a soundcloud link.

Also, the solution to the issue in the Weeping Bay is amazing.

Empty Graves by Unpretty

In which Martha Kent is a mother with a shotgun, and Time Traveling assassins need to learn to back off.

Y'all, this is without a doubt my favorite characterization of Jonathan and Martha Kent. I don't typically read fanfiction based on DC characters, I enjoy it even less. This? I reread every two months on average. It's a comfort fic, not because of any particularly comforting content, but because it's just that great with the characters.

Entirely a Matter of Chance by Darkmagyk and No2Ticonderoga

A Percy Jackson post canon fic with a twist. That twist being, what if canon occurred in 19th century England?

I love this fic. Stayed up till 3:42 a.m. reading the first and second installments. It's great.

I especially love the first fic (which is actually a prequel to the second), the one that follows Percy's navy career. He's trying to earn enough status via promotions and wealth via prize money that Annabeth's father, the Earl of Mercia, will allow him to marry her. (The poor fool doesn't realize Fredrick was drafting their wedding invitations the minute the Titan War ended)

Personal Thoughts:

I really like this one. Time travel is my favorite trope. It’s well written, it draws you in, and the author has done an excellent job of mashing up Legends and Canon in fun and unique ways.

It has everything: Force Sensitive Omega, Tired Space Dad Din Djarin accidentally becoming a main character, Ezra and Anakin as chaotic besties, no Jedi bashing, and much more that would be spoilers.

The author tries to update twice a month. It’s really good. Also this is the only one I’m including the summary for because I’m lazy.

Force Sensitive Sabine travels back in time to the Clone Wars, accidentally bonds with a Force Entity that I’m 99% sure is the Brother, becomes Obi-Wan’s Padawan, and keeps accidentally-on-purpose bringing people back to the past.

Also Quinlan Vos is there.

It’s Sabezra if that’s a turn off for anyone.

The 501st gets trapped in a time loop on Umbara. Delightful crack full of Krell murder and fire.

The Desert Storm by Blue_Sunshine

This is the Star Wars time travel fic. It’s so good. 4 years after the fall of the Republic Obi-Wan gets caught in a sandstorm, and when it passes he’s back in time when Anakin’s just a three year old clinging to his mom’s skirt.

Naturally, Obi-Wan frees the Skywalkers, changes his name to Ben Naasade, takes his younger self as a Padawan, and gives Mace Windu so many headaches.

Featuring: Jedi Shmi Skywalker, Pong Krell getting his shit wrecked, Legends stuff, Jedi Shmi Skywalker, Mandalorians being awesome, Alderaan being awesome, Jedi Shmi Skywalker, Obitine, the Sith being evil and creepy, and most importantly, Jedi Knight Shmi Skywalker
