Hi there. I haven’t seen anyone make a full translation of the 50-minute The Making of SMT III: Nocturne documentary, so I did all the translations myself out of pure love for the game. I’m also a big fan of eirikr’s blog! Here’s the link and please share it if you’d like to:
youtube
This is incredible work! There have been attempts in the past that have stalled for one reason or another, but this is the first full translation that I’m aware of. Happy to spread the word.

Maboroshi
Movies watched in 2024
Maboroshi (2023, Japan)
Director & Writer: Mari Okada
Mini-review:
I was really curious about this movie, since Mari Okada has written and/or directed some pretty amazing stories, and the promotional materials and trailers looked very interesting. However, I can't say I liked it as much as I expected. I did love how ambitious the film is in terms of concept and themes, and the animation definitely lives up to the Mappa standard. In particular, the final act includes some truly stunning visuals. Unfortunately, I just couldn't connect with these characters, and I didn't find any of them likeable or interesting. Therefore, this movie doesn't even come close to the emotional wallop delivered by the ending of Okada's previous directorial work, the beautiful Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. So yeah, Maboroshi is well-made, but rather disappointing.

top watches for september
from this month:
will ospreay vs naomichi marufuji, noah naomichi marufuji debut 25th anniversary show 09/17 — not only my favorite match of the month but my most anticipated one as well! i think it's always interesting to see ospreay be taken out of his usual pace and perform with more breathing room between spots (even if his snappier sequences are what drew me in initially). there are a lot of quiet moments in this match, mixed with that devoted eagerness that ospreay had while he was a junior. it's also a match that is able to tap into something very special thanks to the emotional padding behind it that i think ospreay's other big match from this month (vs yota tsuji) is unable to match
syuri vs mayu iwatani, stardom 5star grand prix day 14 09/03 — syuri is my favorite joshi to watch currently! she wrestles such a loud, hard-hitting style that still feels fresh in the technical scene and she has great in-ring chemistry with mayu here. mayu's reversal of the syu-sekai though... gah! a relatively short match and one of my favorites from the entire gp
bryan danielson vs ricky starks, no disqualification strap match, aew all out 09/03 — the singular non-puro match on this list, which should already give you an idea of how truly great it is. ricky has been a highlight on collision pretty much since it began airing, and the natural charisma that shined through there is ever-present in his recent matches. bloody, brutal, and better than the follow-up texas death rematch in terms of cohesion
zack sabre jr. vs ryohei oiwa, njpw road to destruction 09/08 — i was ecstatic to have boltin oleg in a high-profile match! ...and then it didn't happen. but worry not! oiwa stole the show. it definitely didn't feel as one-sided as it would've if it was oiwa pre-excursion pitted against zack. excited to see more from him
takayuki ueki vs baliyan akki, baka gaijin + friends vol. 8 09/20 — the mad doctor takes on akki, returning superstar of the show, after mecha mummy fails to drill a hole through harashima and is subsequently defeated. it's as silly as it sounds
back catalogue:
shinsuke nakamura vs the great muta, noah the new year 2023 — positively overwhelming presentation in terms of the entrances. misting as a metaphor for relatedness rather than corruption. unstoppable force meets immovable object, up until the object embraces the force. a sentimental finish that stuck with me
katsuyori shibata vs kazuchika okada, njpw sakura genesis 2017 — a holistically tactile bout full of sweaty contact and undying resolve. okada finds himself in the rare predicament of not being the fan favorite! practically impossible to look away during this one
pheromones (danshoku dieno & yuki iino) & shunma katsumata vs akito, kazuki hirata & yuya koroku, ddt sweet dreams! 2023 tour in shinjuku ~ fire! ~ — a typical pheromones match in that it contains loads of their trademark spots (synchronized striptease routines, dramatic jockstrap reveals, "accidental" ass to mouth action) however! this time shunma is there to act as their pup (which he is very much into). a must-watch for fans of public kink in wrestling
atsushi onita vs hayabusa, no ropes barbed wire current mine explosion time bomb deathmatch, fmw 6th anniversary show 1995 — hayabusa comes off as a trapped animal within onita’s environment, only delaying the inevitable with each move. feels and looks like a horror movie, with the counter droning on in the first half and the smoke wafting through the cage of barbed wire in the second. explosions galore!
shotaro ashino vs koji doi, wrestle-1 grand prix 2018 finals — this was my first exposure to ashino and let me tell you... he's so good. his entrance is fuel by metallica, he's cocky, he goes hard in the ring. i'm genuinely shocked he's not a bigger name internationally. nothing too extravagant aside from a few high-impact spots but worth a watch
#at first i wanted to make this into a substack series but it doesn't really warrant that. i tried to keep my thoughts short#monthly match recs

Welcome to the Favorite Classmate Tournament!
This is gonna be a big one. Due to the number of classmates and the fact i couldn't evenly distribute it in a number of pairs and sides that made sense for the brackets (maybe there's a way and I'm just bad at math), every side initially includes 3 pairs and 1 trio each, and finals will be a poll between 3 contenders and y'all will have to live with that, I did my best.
As always, pairs/trios and their order in the bracket were randomly generated.
Complete list of polls under the cut, they'll be linked as soon as they're posted. Polls will be open for a week. May your fave win!

Eiji Okada in Woman in the Dunes (Hiroshi Teshigahara, 1964)
Cast: Eiji Okada, Kyoko Kishida, Koji Mitsui, Hiroko Ito. Screenplay: Kogo Abe, based on his novel. Cinematography: Hiroshi Segawa. Production design: Totetsu Hirakawa, Masao Yamazaki. Film editing: Fusako Shuzui. Music: Toru Takemitsu.
In the absurdist thriller Woman in the Dunes an entomologist (Eiji Okada, gathering specimens in the sand dunes along the seashore, misses his bus and asks the locals for shelter for the night. He is lodged with a widow (Kyoko Kishida) who lives alone in a shack at the bottom of a pit, but in the morning he discovers that he is trapped, unable to climb from the pit, and forced to stay with her and shovel sand that the villagers collect during the day and exchange for provisions. As the days pass, he tries various ways to escape, but in the end, even though he is given the means to leave, he accepts his lot and remains. There have been efforts to determine what the film "means," as if the whole compelling drama were simply a vehicle for some sort of message. But Hiroshi Teshigahara's film is what it is: a compelling story overlaid with eroticism. Because of the strangeness and even improbability of its setting, it seems to suggest more than it states. It works largely because of the performances of Okada and Kishida, who give their characters a compelling tension, an oscillation between tenderness and violence. The key scene takes place when, after having settled into the routine of their life together, the man pleads with the villagers to let him leave the pit for an hour each day, just to look at the sea. The villagers agree, but with a terrible condition: Wearing hideous masks, they gather at the edge of the pit to watch the man and the woman copulate. In his desperation, the man pleads with the woman to comply, and when she refuses he attempts to rape her. Teshigahara's direction, Hiroshi Segawa's cinematography, and Toru Takemitsu's music add to the horror of the scene, just as they make the entire film extraordinarily memorable, if not some kind of statement about the human condition.

Haruki Okada (born December 7, 1959) is a Japanese biologist, historical essayist, and necromancer descended from a prominent line of Japanese necromancers.
The Okada necromancer line dates back to Japan’s Edo period. The necromancer gene is hereditarily passed down to the first-born male offspring.
Okada is a Laureate Professor of Biology at Kyoto University and a Professor Emeritus at Osaka University. He has authored over thirty books on topics ranging from history, biology, and war.
Necromancy
Okada has been operating as a necromancer since 1965. He learned necromancy from his father, Koji Okada, though outclassed him by the age of twelve. Okada holds resentment towards his father, believing he failed their ancestors by taking a laissez-faire approach to necromancy.
Okada would continue to defy his father by rejecting what he deemed as his “small-minded” boundaries placed on their craft. Through the felling of self-proclaimed enemies, Okada has harnessed immortality and become immune to the energies of decay. Though unconfirmed, it is highly likely that Okada was responsible for his father’s death in 1997.
His greatest aim as a necromancer is to obtain higher power and connect himself to the wellsprings of the universe, essentially becoming a god. He views his abilities as something that gives him ultimate dominion over the dead as opposed to being in communion with them.
Personal Life
An intensely private person, he is uninterested in sharing his personal life with those outside his small inner circle. He has no interest in modern art or music. He characterizes himself as a “workaholic” and prefers to occupy his time with academic or necromantic pursuits.
Okada married whisky heiress and activist Grace St Agnes in 1986; the two had met while in college at The University of Melbourne. The couple has one son: Junji Okada, born in April 1988, who inherited the necromancer gene. Okada was an abusive father and neglectful husband, and in 2001, he and St Agnes separated.

Taki Kōji: 'Provoke 3' (1969)
“Today, at this very moment, language is losing its material basis. in other words, its reality and floating in space. We as photographers must capture with our own eyes fragments of reality that can no longer be grasped through existing language, and must actively put forth materials that address language and ideas. This is why we have been so bold as to give Provoke the subtitle Provocative Materials for Thought.“ — Kōji

The experimental project Circulation: Date, Place, Events saw Takuma Nakahira document everything that surrounded him over the course of a day, and exhibit the results for the duration of a week, starting from that same day. This made for a constantly evolving presentation during the 7th La Biennale Paris in 1971. In addition to the images of the surrounding streets, which proliferated day by day, the exhibition was bolstered by photos of friends, television images, copies of newswire reports, and drying underwear. Two days before the end of the biennale, Takuma Nakahira and his friends tore down the images, leaving them on the floor and encouraging visitors to take them.
Born in 1938, Takuma Nakahira was a key member of Japan’s radical photography circles, developing his own image-based practice, while also working as a critic. Beginning his career as a photographer in the mid-60s, Takuma Nakahira would go on to publish the magazine Provoke with colleagues Yutaka Takanashi, Takahiko Okada, and Koji Taki from 1968 to 1969.

forbidden door was pretty great
luckily time zones work out pretty well for me as far as aew stuff goes. i see ppl posting about getting tired near the end of basically every ppv, and i’m sure the ppl in the building get super drained, but out here i get to spend a nice chill afternoon watching some wrestling, so that’s nice
mjf v tanahashi was pretty much what i expected it to be. unfortunately tana can’t really, like, GO go anymore, but mjf’s a good opponent for a guy like that so it ended up being decent
i wasn’t really paying attention to kojima v punk. koji’s my guy but punk is kinda wack
the 4-way was a TON of fun! the whole 3-grappleboys-and-1-lazyboy dynamic was SUPER fun, especially since despite wrestling similar styles, garcia zsj and shibata each have distinct characters and vibes. shibata and zsj constantly going at each other was sick, all the different multiman spots were great & i loved the finish
sanada v jungle boy wasn’t quite the show stealer i was hoping it would be, but it was still enjoyable. obviously the jb heel turn has been super telegraphed but i’m glad it happened and i’m excited for it
the 10-man tag was PERFECT. claudio cowarding out of the faceoff with eddie at the beginning was great. hangman/shooter and ishii/takeshita were some super unique character matchups and i really enjoyed them. commentary at some point said takeshita was the mvp for his team and that was so true, he was all over the place and did so much shit it was crazy. EDDIE AND MOX FACING OFF AND GOING BACK AND FORTH WAS SOOOOOO!!!! AAAAAAA!!! I FELT THAT SHIT IN MY GUT!!!! and then the match devolved into chaos and it was absolutely amazing. all the different sequences and character interactions and just all of it was so perfect!! also i already didn’t expect elite/eddie/ishii to win, and out of everyone on that team ishii was the last guy i expected to get the pin, so them winning and him getting the pin was very cool
unfortunately after the 10-man i was on here and on twitter looking at gifs and discussion of it, so i pretty much missed all of toni v willow. i’ll have to watch it when i watch the show again
omega v ospreay was pretty much what i expected. super long drawn-out epic with lots of blood and big crazy moments, and i enjoyed it a lot! probably won’t watch it again for quite a while because, unlike something like hangman v danielson 1 which was super long but i felt just breezed by, this match felt very dense. apparently the official match time was somewhere around 40ish minutes? and it definitely felt that long
i missed most of the 6-man tag for pretty much the same reasons i missed toni/willow, so i guess i’ll have to watch that too
okada v danielson was a bit disappointing unfortunately. it wasn’t bad, it just didn’t live up to their standards. obviously the hype for the match was astronomical so i wanna clarify that even divorced from the ridiculous hype i still thought it wasn’t as good as i hoped it would be. first off, obviously the crowd was drained. they tried really hard to get up for the match but it didn’t quite work out. secondly, even if this had a hot crowd, i think i would rather watch this match happen in njpw with a japanese crowd. i think an okada/danielson match lends itself better to the way a japanese crowd reacts than an american (or in this case canadian) crowd does. but finally, even taking the crowd out of the equation, i think the ending of the match wasn’t nearly as exciting as i think these 2 are capable of. okada is known for having the super slow-paced buildup lead to a red-hot ending sequence, and this match didn’t really have that. though apparently danielson injured his arm in the match? so him hanging his arm limply at his side for the last third of the match or whatever apparently wasn’t just selling, and that’s probably why the match never shifted into that final gear. unfortunate, but that’s the nature of wrestling i guess
all in all, a couple disappointments but the good stuff made up for it because it was SOOOOOOO GOOD
