happy storyteller saturday! what are your favourite pieces of worldbuilding for the prophet story? also, how's my man cain doing? :3c
Hi! Happy STS yeah! Sunday starts with an S too. Hmmm!!! I quite like. How there’s. No certain answers for parts of the world, actually? So like. The gods have been [killed? Imprisoned?] in stone, and nobody is sure why for centuries. Then we find out the Blight did it to them, and insists they’re dead. But at the same time, it puts significant effort into tracking the statues down and smashing them. Why do that for things that are already dead you silly little infection!!! And obviously, we have a prophet born and a hero made within the story, so the gods can’t truly be dead right now, their divinity is still being assigned!!!! So I guess. The soft world building! There are answers. But not for everything. (Mostly because the focus of the story is on the brothers, and neither of them hugely care for these answers).
Speaking of which!!! Cain is fine and dandy :)

when you start reading what you thought was just a low-stakes comedy hunter BL about a guy trying to live a normal life as a retired s-class hunter running a hangover soup restaurant but then they start hitting you with the past trauma and the burden of being a hero and burnout and tragic yaoi and different worldlines and regrets and sacrifices all while trying to prevent the apocalypse

Guysss the lore gets thicker and thicker!!! Sukuna being Wasuke's twin makes so much more sense and hits in the guts even more!!
Wasuke showed what Sukuna could've been if he was not treated as a curse and hated just for existing..It's interesting how they never coexisted together either one being eaten in the womb or in the modern era Wasuke dying just hours before Sukuna was reincarnated...and even being catalyst to the chain of events. The fact that in jjk being a twin means being incomplete in your jujutsu abilities since they're treated as one (like Maki and Mai) but these two never came together yet they somehow kept missing something..one got to live all powerful and feared by all yet had no love in his life and the other lived a normal life which it was filled with love and happiness eventually but succumbed to a deathly disease...
Also Sukuna knows everything about Wasuke from Yuji's memories which adds even more to their bond, he had felt the warmth and love of 'Yuji's grandfather'...he knows Wasuke's last words 'to be surrounded by loved ones when you die' and how beautiful is it that the most feared man curse who had noone for 1000 years died in the hands of a loved one. It was Wasuke's nurturing that shaped Yuji into the person he was who went ahead and tried to see Sukuna as someone more than just a calamity and a curse... It's also beautiful how both Wasuke and Sukuna thought they were dying alone but Yuji was with both of them...they both died with a loved one by their side..🥹🥹 being the grumpy old men they were...
This panel hits so muchhhh harder now!!

caleb, who planned something grand for when he proposes to you but instead decides to pop the question after your nightly walk.
you point to the stars in the sky and say, "that one's just like you. it's the brightest of them all," and god, he's just so in love, and you seem so much brighter than a star could ever be. you lower your head, changing your view from the nightsky to caleb and he's looking at you with so much love and devotion in his gaze.
in a voice, much more quiet and vulnerable than you've ever heard him use, he decides against asking a question, but rather says it like a fact established by the universe itself.
"marry me."
🍎 — fic coming later today!

it differs depending on how you look at it, but to me, Pure Vanilla totally has WAY more world experience than Shadow Milk does. which is wild when Shadow Milk is the embodiment of Knowledge itself but listen. hear me out.
from the moment Shadow Milk existed he was A God. he had to be The Fount of Knowledge. he wasn't allowed to be anything else but the god he was made to be. he preached knowledge, but there's a difference between knowing something and experiencing something.
meanwhile, Pure Vanilla was a shepherd (shepherds are fucking cracked btw, sheep are several hundred pounds of animal and shepherds have to be able manhandle them with ease). on top of that, Pure Vanilla went out into the world and learned magic. he adventured. he fights off hoards of monsters and dragons with his friends and has celebratory drinks with them. he founded an entire kingdom and ruled politically as its king.
Pure Vanilla is more composed and regal than the embodiment of knowledge itself because he has that worldly experience. he had time to grow and learn how to mess up and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.
and the reason Shadow Milk is so fucking insane is because he's extremely repressed. he was never allowed the freedom to be anything but the Fount of Knowledge. and the second he tried to do anything but be that, the witches sealed him away for thousands of years.
all this to say, Shadow Milk can dish it but he can't take it. Who would win: shepherd mage king who works out regularly vs immortal jester god who's been wasting away for millennia.

this is not directed at anything in particular so much as a lament ive made in private several times over the years and am thinking about again now but. i wish that fandom had not conflated the term "zine" with "artbook". because 99% of the "zines" i see are in fact artbooks, chapbooks, or art/writing anthologies. which to me are just so so different as products!!! instead of being fully handmade they are all being professionally bound by an outside company, often come with stickers/keychains/other perks that are 3rd party manufactured, etc... and to be clear i love these and have bought several, but!
they are to me kind of the antithesis of what the word "zine" should actually imply, in the traditional sense. a zine is something you make by hand and then photocopy for the dozen or so people in your circle. a zine can be just a single sheet of paper you folded up into 8 pages and scribbled on with pencil. they can get fancier than this but once you move from using a stapler (or if you're feeling fancy needle & thread) to needing to have things perfect bound & glued by a separate industry then!!!! we have moved up the sliding scale in terms of product, towards art/chapbook and away from zine. that's what those terms meant initially we just have... kept calling them zines anyway i guess, and now i think most younger people don't realize that the origins for "zines" were things you handmade and maybe snuck your school/work's photocopier to help produce for your friends. And they were made by one person, or maybe a small collab of 2-3. Once you start adding more artists/authors, and they're all making separate things (even if on a theme), now we have hit an anthology. you know?
because i would LOOOOVE fandom zines in the traditional sense of the word, just posting photos of short scrappy handmade art/comics and mailing them to mutuals for fun like you would a christmas card. idk. like i've made i think 8-10 personal little zines on all random topics in the past year just for fun and my friends, because they're rewarding and people LOVE getting something like that in the mail. they're little visual shitposts like "rating the 16 crayola crayons i found in my drawer" and "plants i have eaten while taking walks in the desert" and it would be really fun to have fandom equivalents of those too... but fandom these days has moved away from silly rough stuff towards everything being really polished + professional and it takes some of the charm out of it i think

Stanley and Sixer!
Sent to Gravity Falls to live with a great aunt they barely know with no warning, the twins have… slightly different reactions. Stanley is not at all impressed with the idea of kicking it around some backwater town for a summer when they could've been working on the Stan o' War. Stanford is also put-out, but is optimistic about finding fun in documenting interesting things in the woods. Their attitudes pick up even more when they discover a spellbook lost in the woods that teaches them that Gravity Falls is full of weirdness and adventure. They both want to discover the two Authors of the spellbook, though each has a secret favorite author they want to meet in particular.
Stanley: With his brash yet suspicious personality, he finds his fun in looking for monsters in the woods with the hopes of beating them up and making a name for himself--a stance the creatures of Gravity Falls don't appreciate much. He feels a growing distance between himself and Stanford and has no idea what to do with it or how to talk to his twin about it, so he masks it with bravado and charm. He constantly thinks of ways to make himself important and interesting, which often blow up in his face. Thinks he's cooler than he really is.
Stanford, aka Sixer: Once he realized that Gravity Falls is a town full of weirdness, Stanford was thrilled by the thought that it might be a blessing in disguise, a place to finally branch out and make friends who won't run once they see his hands. He really, really wants to make friends with anomalies, like one of the sirens that supposedly live in the lake or the boy who claims to be a psychic. This goal combined with his trusting nature might lead him down dangerous paths. At least he has Stanley to help him! Though lately it feels like Stanley has been less honest and more clingy than usual, and it's starting to grate on him...
While Dipper and Ford are paralleled in the show, I feel like Ford as a child would have an attitude that parallels Canon Mabel's better in terms of inciting the plot. They're both enthusiastic to the point of being Too Much, intense, and often convinced they're right above what others think, and I just feel like him having a quest to find friends takes the place of Mabel's quest for a boyfriend very well. Meanwhile this Stanley has the skeptical but investigative attitude of Canon Dipper, and I could see him being the type to want to prove himself a la Dipper vs Manliness, provoking people he really shouldn't provoke in the name of showing who he can be.
