Not really, but ... ok I will admit that I often headcanon that it is part of it. (The other part being: he choses to do the evil thing.) On the other hand (which I still possess, unlike some), his lack of empathy and stuff is a direct consequence of his earlier choices, so...
It's complicated.
But yes, he definitely lacks empathy. And goes into dissociative states. And is evil.
Neither of those is 100% of him.
Nienna, about Melkor: It's not that he's evil. He lacks empathy and he goes into a disassociative state and commits atrocities.
Everyone else: ㆆ_ㆆ
#yes I know in [widely defined at least] canon he actually is 100% evil#also if it's not in hobbit LotR or Silm it's not strictly canon#even if Tolkien repeated in in his letters way too many times#I just respectfully disagree with his opinion (about the book he wrote)#it's one of the parts of mostly-canon which I just yeet out because they don't work for me#none of the normal Valar is 100% good#ok maybe Varda#but I think most aren't#so why would he be 100% evil#I could rant for long about how I cannot see Valar as fully angelic with how they behave in the book#they're a little bit more human-like... they're a weird mix#it's complicated#psychoanalyzing idiot1 again#anyway:#silm#melkor#morgoth#nienna#the silmarillion#legendarium tag#tolkien legendarium#reblogs#incorrect silmarillion quotes#rambling in tags#silm headcanons#silm hc

Exchange Rules and FAQs
Please familiarize yourself with exchange rules before participating. The goal of this exchange is to be fun and to foster enthusiasm for M- and E-rated works in Silmarillion fandom. Questions can be directed to the mod email account, [email protected], to the exchange’s Tumblr askbox, or as a comment on Dreamwidth.
2024 Schedule:
Nominations: Sept. 30-Oct 7, 2024
Signups: Oct. 8-15, 2024
Works due: Nov. 22, 2024
Works revealed: Nov. 29, 2024
Creators revealed: Dec. 6, 2024
Eligibility:
You must be 18+ to participate in this exchange. One signup per person.
This exchange is hosted on AO3. You must have an AO3 account to participate. If you don’t currently have an account and would like one, the mod has a limited number of account invitations available; please contact them to request one.
Expectations:
You will make and receive a work of fanfiction or fanart focused on one or more Silmarillion characters, with a Mature or Explicit rating. For fanfiction, the minimum wordcount is 1,000 words. For fanart, works should be at minimum clean linework on unlined paper.
Nominations:
Nominations will run for one week, beginning Sept. 30.
Exchange tagset is located here. When nominations are open, you will see a button at the top right of your screen that says "Nominate." Clicking on this will take you to the nomination form. You can nominate up to 10 relationships via the form.
Why nominate?
Nominating helps you ensure the ships you want to create for are present in the tag set, particularly if they are not already canonical tags for The Silmarillion on AO3 (e.g. your rarest rarepairs, Character/OC ships etc). You can nominate up to 10 ships. Nominating helps potential participants get excited about the exchange and get ideas for what they might like to request/offer, which is important in a fandom with so many potential combinations of characters.
Do I have to nominate?
No. Before you submit your nominations, feel free to take a look at the tagset to see if your ships have already been nominated. If so, your work here is done, unless you feel like nominating other ships you don’t yet see in the tagset. If you’re a major multishipper you can even coordinate with your friends to make sure all your rare ships are included in the tagset.
What about threesomes/moresomes?
Threesomes/moresomes are eligible to be nominated.
What about ships with original characters?
Original characters are eligible to be nominated as part of a ship. (Ex. Maedhros/Original Male Character)
What about individual characters?
If you are interested in characters by themselves, this will be an opt-in you can include on your sign up.
What if I forgot to include a ship?
Ask someone to add it to their nominations, or email/send an ask to the mod and they will accomodate you as long as we are not too far into signups.
Signups:
The signup form will be located on the sidebar here. More specific instructions to come when signups open.
Keep in mind you MUST include some details of what you'd like your gift to contain, either in the Details section or in an optional linked "Dear Creator" letter that is complete and unlocked by the time signups close. These can be general likes, specific prompts, or a combination.
DNWs: if you have DNWs, these MUST be listed in the Details section. For the purposes of this exchange, please be specific in your DNWs - "DNW kink" is too vague. "DNW breathplay" or "DNW watersports" (for example) are easier for your creator to understand and work around.
Treats:
Requests will be visible throughout the exchange. If you are interested in writing or drawing treats/extra gifts, you can go ahead and post your work to the collection, check the "this work is a gift" box, and designate your recipient. You do not need to be signed up for the exchange to create treats.
Defaults/Pinch Hits:
Sometimes life happens and you are unable to complete your assignment. That's ok! If you know you will need to default, please do so as soon as possible to give us time to find an alternate creator to take on your assignment. If you default, you are not necessarily guaranteed a gift.
Calls for pinch hits will be posted on the exchange Tumblr and DW. If you are interested in being a pitch hitter, please let the mod know.

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @zannolin. Not tagging anyone but never let that stop you from doing something.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
98 (100 by early next week. the wonders of posting two short stories a week)
2. What's your total A03 word count?
274,925 (over 100,000 from works posted this year. Again, the wonders of posting two little things every week)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The exhaustive list (but only what I've posted to public places), in no particular order
The Transformers
Brave Police (Mostly just a beta reader on that one, though)
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Star Trek/Enterprise
The Expanse
Inheritance Cycle
Torchwood
Rowland Sinclair Series (by Sulari Gentill - yes, I will encourage you to read/listen to the series! Also, the smallest fandom for which I write, ie. I created the tags and it's basically mine to control. Gosh, I should really finish my current WIP so the characters don't feel abandoned.)
Redwall (technically, the only things I've posted in a podfic of someone else's story)
Sherlock Holms
Temeraire
Detroit: Become Human
Beyonders (Another WIP I should finish so I can once again say I own more than 10% of the fandom)
Rings of Power (I'll separate it from the works that Tolkien was actually involved in)
Lord of the Rings/The Silmarillion (the source of the 2 stories per week)
-I sure hope that's everything-
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
In order of greatest to least
It Started With A Fever (Detroit: Become Human)
Interruptions (Transformers)
Checking Samples In Real Time (Detroit: Become Human)
Dawson's Christiana (Temeraire)
Scavenging More Than Parts (Transformers)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I respond to every comment. Why? Because I like it when authors respond to my comments and I want readers to know that I see and appreciate that they not only took time to read my story but also to say something kind about it.
Admittedly, I am sometimes very late to responding when I'm busy or the comment left me very flustered (because how do I adequately convey how wonderful the reader made me feel?)
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably, It Started With A Fever. It's a sickfic and the sick character isn't better by the end but there is a plan for diagnostic testing and treatment. So, more open ending than angsty.
Actually, I looked back and realized that Spy in the DMD (Transformers) is angsty because readers don't know what will happen to the characters at the end (live? die? etc). Yeah, so that's probably my angstiest ending.
Though now that I'm thinking about it, Negligence (Silmarillion) is also a but angsty and certainly more likely to actually get people to have feeling over the characters and want a good ending than Spy in the DMD.
Okay, okay, I'll stop thinking about it and just move on (but Dawson's Christiana is--)
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Home (Inheritance). Ok also a little angsty, but the entire purpose is saving a character who died in canon and at the end he finally gets to go home with his best friend, even if he isn't totally healed from everything.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope. Most I've had is someone taking the time to comment about how they disagree with the premise of a story/how I interpreted why the directors/designers of a TV show did what they did.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Awkward smut? Like, I've only written it a little so it's probably still pretty clunky for people to read.
But in all seriousness, I write enthusiastically consensual slash and het smut. Basically, I want everyone to be happy and have a good time while I use them as writing guinea pigs. I'm sure that the more I write, the more I'll branch out into trying various things.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have not written a crossover (beyond crossovers between various series/universes in the Transformers franchise. Does that count? Like, it's canonically established that that's a thing that can happen).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope (when your writing is only so-so, you fly under a lot of radars)
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope again (see above)
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I am a co-author on two stories (Transformers and Brave Police). For both of those, I was mostly just a beta reader but I did end up writing 2 chapters for the Transformers story when the author wanted a different POV (most of the story was first person and then I did more of an omnipresent third person).
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Across all fandoms? That's actually very hard. I'm not a huge ship person, like, let everyone be with whoever they want to be with. BUT, if we're going based on ships I've written and that I enjoy writing, Celebrían x [loving and devoted person, usually Elrond] is pretty high up there (Silmarillion). It's good soup.
But also, Carn x consequences of his actions and pinning for Roran is near and dear to my heart (Inheritance).
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The sequel to It Started With A Fever. I would love to explore how my medical and scientific training could fit with android diagnostics/medicine, and you know I love me some good angst and hurt/comfort with a happy ending. However, I just don't really see it happening because of how much work it will require and the fact that I'm not even reading fics in that fandom now and have my writing time filled to bursting with LOTR/Silm stuff.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm reasonably good with grammar? Like, I passed all my English courses and writing classes? I write what I want to read so at least one (1) person enjoys it.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I spend too much time working out exactly how I want to say something and end up not actually writing very much. I'm not very confidence with figurative language, so my writing tends to be quite straightforward and literal (which isn't bad, but I WANT to use more figurative language). Editing, my nemesis.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I'm not opposed to it and I've seen it done very well with non-sense languages from Transformers. If someone does it, I prefer that the narration indicates at least the general idea/mood of what was said so that I don't have to translate it. Also, it feels clunky when the author just writes the direct translation after what is said (if it's important enough that you want the readers to know exactly what is said, why are you using a different language in the first place?).
So, that's my two cents.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Publicly? Transformers.
But way back in the distant years of my youth, before I knew what fanfiction was, I did a lot of fanfiction and story planning for Redwall.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
I am very proud of It Started With A Fever. I put a lot of time into writing the story and even worked with a wonderful beta reader. In the end, I think it really improved my capacity as an author.
On the other hand, I love Home because I SAVED CARN!!! My sweet, pathetic little spellcaster who gave it his best and had a death that was at both times thematically appropriate and sadder the longer I thought about it. *gently hugs him so he doesn't break before passing him back to Katrina and Roran*

top five books!
Sam. You're asking someone with an MSc literature — someone who turned down a PhD in literature, not because she didn't want to do it, but because her mental health was shattered — about her top five books. Do you realise what you've done? You've enabled me, Sam.
I struggle choosing favourite books even on the best of days, so for the purpose of this I hope you don't mind if I expand it to also include literary series. In no particular order:
The Trials of Apollo, by Rick Riordan. I wrote one of the first 15,000 word research theses on this series. It hasn't been published, but it got me an overall Distinction in my MSc and I would gladly have done my PhD solely on this series. There is so much to talk about — the conversations about trauma, the triumph over childhood abuse (gaslighting), the realisation that sometimes you can't leave your family and have to find ways of living with it. And Apollo. I relate to Apollo, who starts out as The Worst children's novel protagonist, because I too grew up as a spoiled brat and had to work through years of trauma to become a decent human being (something I'm still working on, but that's another story). This series is so well written, so engaging, and touches on so many important issues. And I have a lot of feelings about it.
Smith of Wootton Major, by J. R. R. Tolkien. "But, Kalh," you might say, "why not The Lord of the Rings? Or The Hobbit? Or The Silmarillion? You know, the stuff you've published peer-reviewed research about?" No. Listen. Listen. The Legendarium is amazing and great and fantastic, but SoWM is where it's at. It's Tolkien's writing at its best. It's the epitome of a fairytale. It's short, tells half the story through symbolism and metaphors, and is absolutely gorgeous. It fully and completely embodies his theory of fairy stories, and years of literary research and writing. And it shows.
Howl's Moving Castle, by Diana Wynne Jones. I would have gone with the Chrestomanci series (also by her), but this novel has a decidedly special place in my heart. It was adapted as Studio Ghibli film, and I can absolutely see why. Reading it feels like looking at one of Marie Brožová's illustrations (example below). There's so many seemingly unimportant details that leap out of the background at various points, it's all fantastical, and it feels like a world where everything is possible. We all know Tolkien is renowned for his world-building, but god damn, Jones' is up there. You can tell she loved writing, because HMC practically glows with that love. It's magic incarnate and I'm so sad my copy of it is at my parents' place three flights away, because now I really want to re-read it.
(Source)
Deeplight, by Frances Hardinge. Ok, so I think I have pretty much every children's book Hardinge has ever written, because her world-building, her characters, and her prose is just that good. That said, Deeplight was the first novel by her I read. I was half-way through my MSc and was tired of Ballard, and Beckett, and Smith, and Spiotta, and I had picked this one up some weeks earlier because the cover intrigued me (yes, I judge books by their covers — it's how I've come across over half the books on this list). It's 442 pages long. I read it in one sitting. I still remember the absolute rollercoaster of rage and joy and grief and deep terror I felt reading it. I don't know if it would stand up to a re-reading, but I know that as a one-time read, it's fantastic.
Under the Whispering Doorway, by T. J. Klune. I was going to talk about Ross Montgomery, whose books I like more than Klune's, but UtWD has a special place in my heart due to the circumstances under which I read it. Last winter was rough (to the point where I considered moving six feet down). I had my parents' numbers blocked, refused to visit them alone, and spent the holiday with @foolsbangle (tagging you bc I don't know that I've ever actually expressed how much spending Christmas with you and your family meant to me). I had barely touched a book in several months, and was struggling through a one-year course on the History of Ideas. When I went to An's, I brought some books with me, in the hope that I'd be able to read again. One of these was UtWD. I retrieved it while An was drawing, snuggled up against them, and opened the book. After a while, I became aware An had started reading over my shoulder, and that — the fact that we were both reading the same book at the same time — kept me going. One of my last nights there, we stayed up until 7AM, snuggled up like that to finish the book. UtWD itself is alright. It has fun queer representation and some delightful character, but I've read better prose. Reading it with An like that, however, made it very special to me.
Other honorary mentions that were serious contenders for this list:
The Chime Seekers, by Ross Montgomery
The Midnight Guardians, by Ross Montgomery
The Snow Song, by Sally Gardener
This Is How You Lose the Time War, by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Six Crimson Cranes, by Elizabeth Lim
Men Without Women, by Haruki Murakami
Footprints: In Search of Future Fossils, by David Farrier
The Land of the Green Man, by Carolyne Larrington
Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
You may be surprised that the Four Swords manga isn't on this list. This isn't because it's not one of my current favourites, but rather that the list only contains books and series I feel satisfied having read and analysed, without engaging in their respective fan communities. Think of it like the difference between walking through a museum and going to the playground. The above books are artefacts in a museum of literature, exhibited under spotlight, and I walk through the shadows to the curiosities I'm interested in examining. I look at their age and composition, discover their individual contexts, and peruse the research associated with each artefact.
The FS manga is a playground. It's somewhere where I get down on my knees and dig in the dirt, climb the monkey bars, and sit down with others to play with the dolls and action figurines scattered about. It's bright, sunlit, and colourful. It's paint splattered on walls and colourful handprints on thick paper that mum will make you sign in wobbly letters when it's dried. It's a creative endeavour that inspires joy and laughter, rather than the solemn contemplation of artefacts.
#kalh answers#oh boy this got long#but it was so satisfying to write#please imagine that we're sitting in the corner of a warm pub - one drink in - while i rant about all of the above#and go off on all sorts of tangents#thank you for this ask sam

#tolkien#silmarillion#silm#celegorm#tyelkormo#orome#vana#yes this means tyelko is taking the dog in the divorce#the moon appears and he's like immediately “ayo that's Tilion”#curufin voice: how are you recognising a maiar who is currently the fucking moon#tyelko voice: funny that you'd mention fucking the moon#do you see my vision#no one makes him weird enough. this man speaks dog and bird and fistfights people over dragonfly linguistics#of course he's mental gymnasticing his way to convincing himself that he's definitely not disappointing his father#(a common feanorian pastime)#just imagining the Doriath beef here btw#“why's thingol so special huh” “I mean he did marry a Maia” “he's not special do you know how many times I had to get an impromptu divorce”#“what” “yeah cause I'd accidentally marry a Maia. or like Oromë once or twice”#“OROME??” “ok maybe three times” adding OP's tags because i'm crying with laughter this is exactly the kind of celegorm cringefail weirdness that i need mwah
Celegorm but everything about him is 10x funnier because he's a chronic ainur fucker and just doesn't tell anyone about it. He looks inwards and decides marriage is between elves so deciding to roll around with maiar of the hunt is absolutely valid and not marriage. Who's ever heard of an elf marrying a Maia?
Elven polyamory may be illegal but it doesn't count if he's just ferrying kisses between Oromë and Vána- they're not elves. No, it's not hypocritical, what are you talking about. Just don't tell his father. What? No, not because of the whole polyamory thing, Feanor's just got a thing about Valar. Yes Celegorm is sure that's the only reason he doesn't want to tell his dad.

what is that quest that pulls me onwards
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/itFa2b1
by blueleafsky
"So," Findekáno said brightly, gesturing with his long branch. "We simply need to plan the perfect heist."
His audience, consisting of his wife, two of his cousins, several squirrels, a flock of sparrows, and one mildly confused skunk, stared at him.
"I have a better idea," said Artanis.
"A heist is the logical –" Findekáno began heatedly.
"No, no, I agree with you. I simply think we should adjust the timing, and our allies."
"What allies," Maitimo said gloomily.
"Exactly. We should seek out Uncle Elwë and ask for information and possibly provisions and assistance."
"Getting help is a good idea. I think he would probably receive us, since we have news from Valinor and our families don't appear capable of going out of sight of the coastline."

Ok so everyone know about the meme that every popular artist has their NSFW art side account. And in my mind it makes sense. NSFW shit is usually weird position and nude character involving more than one character so of course drawing lot of that can improve your art... So I kinda wanna try that.. like the NSFW side account thing to help me with my drawing skills. Because why not? Anything to improve my skills. But then I remember I am a most-of-the-time-sex-repulsed asexual. I might have a problem with that idea...

Ayaka and thoma being best friend
I think its already well established for the one that doesnt ship ayaka with thoma that like... they are both fruity, but what about the fact that thoma is pratically Ayaka's maid and that Ayaka is pretty lonely? Well let's combine the two together! Thoma has become over the time Ayaka's confident and closest friend.
headcanons under the cut :3
i dont think there is a precise moment that Ayaka and Thoma became best friends.. or even friends.
Like the Kamisato family "adopted" Thoma when he was still young and Ayaka was still a kid too.
So they pretty much grow old together. At first it was a really distant relationship. The one of a child learning to be a noble and the one of a childe learning to be a servant.
But then Ayato started to make sure that Thoma still had fun
he is still a kid/teen after all
Then they started to talk a litle bit more... and more importantly play together...
the other maids and servants where always speaking about how cute they were together and how well mannered Thoma was around Ayaka
in fact the well manneredness came from a place of not wanting to hurt Ayaka. He had no trouble to see her strentgh and that she could take Thoma's full force.
but Ayato was scary when his sister was hurt
playing over the time started to change into training.
technically being a servant Thoma didn't have the "right" to train at the same level as the Kamisato heirs.
but again Ayato played his card and made sure that Thoma was well educated and trained
Thoma was grateful and he did his best to learn as much as possible
he even started to get ambitious. and thats how he became a housekeeper as well as a fixer
NOW BACK TO HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH AYAKA
(sorry for the outburst i am just very excited about this part)
OK so over the years Ayaka realised how lonely she was with no friends and just her duty and limited power in her hands
Thoma comforted her many times when the pressure was too much or that the solitude was unbearable.
she helped him too, making sure homesickeness was healed by importing mondstat specialities or bringing him wherever he wanted to go in inazuma
but they didn't really called themselves friends.
that made people speculating things... two young persons being so close to each other and not calling themselves friends? must be romantic feelings involved.
but then Ayaka met the traveler
she realised what friendship meant and that Thoma and her were friends.
She started to be more honest with Thoma and talking about things she only thought in the past...
like gossips she heard.. or secrets she found in the archives of the kamisato's
Thoma fueled the rumors she provided with things he heard on the street or with the other housekeepers
At some point they started talking about love. But not between them

Chiluc hc part 4? :)
(I had an writer block for the past 2 month I am trying to beat it into submission)
_______________
I have this idea of Diluc going to Snezhnaya to beat some fatui everytime a mild inconvenience happen in his life or in Mondstadt in general
Adelaide is sick? That's the fatui's fault
The grape harvest wasn't that good? Elzer is ready to see Diluc leave to kick some fatui's ass
Flora didn't sell enough flower? Must be the fatui
Bennett has been missing for 5 days? Those damn fatui!
The stray cats in the city had not been fed enough?! Diluc is already in the snow fighting some fatui.
Needless to say. Diluc is more often that not in Snezhnaya
And the fatui's after the 3rd wave this MONTH are starting to not have enough men to fight him.
So they turn to the Tsaritsa
She has someone in mind to take care of this strange man screaming vengeance in the Snezhnayien tempest.
(she knows damn well it's diluc because of dottore talking to her about him)
She has a harbinger that has the fighting spirit of one hundred men and the battle capabilities of fifty generals.
So she send him the moment she hear about the stranger coming back
Childe was thrilled to have a fight that left him breathless and heartful.
He never won. But somehow, the stranger left every time after winning.
He didn't fight or killed anymore fatui.
Once the harbinger was down and ready to use foul Legacy, Diluc would pull a trick that made Childe impossible to move long enough for the red haired man to leave the battle ground
Only to come back weeks after
Since the first fight, Childe could reach out to those red locks only in his dream.
Until he could. For real.
Those red hair falling all around them. Creating a curtain of intimacy in the little bedroom of an inn lost between two icy mountains.
It is funny when Childe remembers it.
That night. Something had shifted during combat. The blow against him were hitting harder than usual. He knew something was askew
But how could he stop himself?
Finally his opponent that won all the previous fights was hitting like never before.
How could Childe not fight back as hard and as ferocious as dying lion?
So Childe fought back like the dying lion he wasn't.

What you said in the tags about being indifferent to the Silmarillion hit home with me. It took me literally years to manage to finish it. I felt I had to, eventually, so I kept trying. Starting, giving up, restarting, giving up again and trying to pick up where I left off, and so on. I haven't picked it up since, even though I've read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy many, many times each.
Ahh yeah as someone who read the Silmarillion a while back and never got really invested in it, I feel that too. <3 Every time I think of the Silmarillion, I think of what Tolkien himself said about it:
I am doubtful myself about (the Silmarillion.) Part of the attraction of the L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist. To go there is to destroy the magic, unless new unattainable vistas are again revealed.
I wish I could be as excited about the Silmarillion as so many other fans I see online are, because I love how much they love it, I love the art they make, and I love how interesting they make the characters seem! But I think that quote from Tolkien is exactly why the Silmarillion falls flat for me-- Lord of the Rings does a beautiful job of Implying the history of this epic fantasy world through fragments of stories that the characters only half-remember; through subtle details, or through things like a character’s traditions or names. Reading the books feels like playing an ARG where you’re piecing together the world’s history alongside the characters. So something gets lost when the history/mythology is flatly over-explained like a textbook. XD .(That’s just how I feel though haha.)
And I could go on a bunch of different tangents but I also just personally don’t like a lot of Tolkien’s explanations? It’s sorta like “wow,,,,,..... I liked this better when you Didn’t explain it and just dropped a couple ambiguous hints and let me reconstruct it myself” skdjfsdkfsf. Lord of the Rings makes you ask so many questions about the history of Middle Earth, but I personally found a lot of the Silmarillion’s answers to those questions underwhelming, occasionally even in ways I thought weakened the story of Lotr.
I also feel like it’s important that the Silmarillion is an unfinished collection of stories Tolkien was never completely happy with and that often wildly contradict each other, not the Definitive Lore Bible Textbook(tm) people often insist it is. I don’t like to play the game of “Tolkien’s intent is the only thing that matters,” but if people want to play that game I feel confident that there are reasons Tolkien thought the Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales/etc/etc weren’t ready to be published? Which is is why I kinda think it's weird that everyone talks about them like they represent his Real Definitive Final Intent.
The biggest reason the Silmarillion never grabbed me, though, was probably just the absence of hobbits XD. Ok I’m joking but I’m not. I think the central appeal of Lord of the Rings/the Hobbit for me, personally, is the contrast between a sweeping post-apocalyptic fantasy epic and a group of simple ordinary little best friends. Without the hobbits, there’s nothing to contrast all the Swords and Sorcery, nothing to anchor the world to something warm and intimate and human.
But again, I do see why people like it-- for a lot of people, the Silmarillion Does have that “archaeology/ARG” type feel. For a lot of people, the Silmarillion doesn’t flatten Middle Earth, it just opens up new areas for them to explore. For a lot of people, the unfinished and fragmented nature of the Silmarillion gives them that feeling of “distant towers gleaming in a sunlit mist” and makes them excited to expand on the story even more on their own and to find the humanity in the historical-epic-fantasy-characters. Not for me tho XD. But yeah I'm reassured to hear I'm not alone in....Not Caring about the Silmarillion asdkdf.
#overthinkinglotr#but yeah!#i have mixed feelings on it#I could go on a million tangents#despite the fact that again#i do not have any personal investment in the silmarillion one way or the other really XD#I've drawn a bunch of the characters as cats!#and again I think a lot of the fanart is fun#it reminds me a bit of the hobbit film trilogy fandom#only in that like........#i think the fandom stuff is more interesting than the thing itself#haha

not to get involved with the Discourse, but I am a huge Tolkien fan and have read a lot of the other books and documents besides just the main books--
while racism in the Legendarium is a thing that exists (and it shouldn't be swept aside!) I also want to note that:
(1) Tolkien is ambiguous about a lot of descriptors for characters in the First Age/Second Age beyond notable features (i.e. [spoilers for the Silmarillion] Nerdanel has red hair, Fingon has gold ribbons in his braids, Maedhros loses his hand) and there is a good portion of the Silmarillion fandom that views the characters as POC (check out the #mepoc tag for examples) (shameless plug for @arwenindomiel and @absynthe--minded as well)
(2) Tolkien actually described the different clans/families of hobbits and noted the differences in appearance.
The Harfoots were browner of skin, smaller, and shorter, and they were beardless and bootless; their hands and feet were neat and nimble; and they preferred highlands and hillsides. The Stoors were broader, heavier in build; their feet and hands were larger; and they preferred flat lands and riversides. The Fallohides were fairer of skin and also of hair, and they were taller and slimmer than the others; they were lovers of trees and of woodlands. [The Fellowship of the Ring, Concerning Hobbits]
(3) Tolkien's inspiration for Gondor was Asia Minor and Egypt. The inspiration for Númenor was Atlantis, but specifically the Plato's recounting of the story.
(4) There are humans in Lord of the Rings, the Haradrim and Easterlings, that are described using language that implies they are from the Middle East/Asia/Africa. It is well-discussed in many scholarly circles that this is an extremely racist portrayal, and discussions of race in the Legendarium should acknowledge this racism, but I think it's a necessary point to bring up in the context of the greater debate/controversy/discussion about race in Lord of the Rings and Rings of Power.
tl;dr-- there has always been room for elves and men and hobbits and dwarves to be Not White, it's just never been shown on screen until now
[I was thalassakimou, I changed URLs-- hi hello, polla filakia]
It's ok, thank you for sending information my way! As I wrote in one of my replies there are was room for diversity with the humans and the elves (I didn't include the hobbits because the discussion wasn't about them ) and the existence of this diversity in general is not a negative thing!
Only for different cultures of Dwarves I haven't seen a reference from Tolkien. And that's why the discussion was mostly about Disa.
For the hobbits I also don't mind it if the author himself had this described in his words. I should just note that "browner of skin" can be interpreted many ways, including both what Americans call "POC", as well South and Eastern Europeans. Because in the UK and North Europe in general, they call one "dark" for having a standard Mediterranean tan 😂 And Greeks themselves say "I blackened" when they tan, and so few of us have extreme tans. Not anything to do with the general lotr discussion, I just wanted to make a point of different countries viewing "dark" differently, and North countries have made "White" a very exclusive club than even if your skin is light they will exclude you for being 1% more darker than them.
Granted, the multiple anon messages and comments made it seem like a bigger issue than I personally see it. At the end of the day it's a show, not an evil grand scheme to rob people of their rights 😂 The only reason I'm explaining so much is to avoid being misunderstood and because I like writing walls of text

Fic writer review, thank you to @enigma-the-mysterious for the tag!!!
How many works do you have on AO3?
17 apparently
What’s your total AO3 word count?
34,868
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
7 (I'm counting all Tolkien-related fandoms as one bc my fics in terms of Tolkien fandoms have a lot of overlap and often don't really fit neatly as either Silm or LOTR specifically so I'm just saying those are one); LOTR/Silmarillion/LOTR stuff, which is honestly like my oldest fandom really, certainly oldest one I still consider myself to be in, BBC Musketeers, Robin of Sherwood (the 1984-1986 tv show), Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar series (what I've done with that so far is centered on Herald Alberich from Exile's Honor and Exile's Valor to be specific), Star Trek AOS, BBC Merlin, and Terry Pratchett's Discworld.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A 25th of May (Fandom is Discworld, and I still don't know how that one is my highest by kudos, it's not even good and it's not for the biggest fandom I've written for by any means)
Bloodstains (BBC Musketeers)
Heart of Ice (BBC Musketeers)
First Impressions (BBC Musketeers)
Flames of Fear (Heralds of Valdemar)
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I do my best to, although admittedly sometimes I don't do that immediately and then I forget and then I feel too awkward to reply when I remember again a million years later. Anyway, I do it because I love interacting with other fans and talking about my fics and stuff!
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don't really know. It kind of depends on whether you feel like meta knowledge that the characters will in the future be alright makes the ending less angsty or not? Because like A 25th of May and The Darkness of Moria arguably have pretty depressing endings if you take it at face value with where I leave the characters in the story, but anyone who reads them is going to have the meta knowledge that things will get better for the characters, eventually, and no one's gonna die who isn't dead already, and all that, since Darkness of Moria is pre-canon and 25th is pre-canon to all of City Watch books aside from Night Watch.
But on the other hand if you say that if the reader has meta knowledge of the character's survival/that things will get better for them negates the angst, then those aren't too bad. I would say that in that case, Forest of Death, Bloodstains, and But There Is Silence At My Side are my angstiest endings (idk in what order, I'm bad at picking specific ones anyway) since the first two of those deal with The Whole Savoy Thing in Musketeers, which... nothing that happens in canon makes it less painful or more ok that it happened, and in those fics I purposefully chose not to give the characters involved really any kind of emotional closure, since the angle I took in my fics was one where I felt those issues I brought up weren't really resolved at all in any way until the stuff came up in the actual tv show. And But There Is Silence At My Side deals with grief immediately after the death of several close friends of the main characters of the fic, and since the fic was very brief and set during like, the space of an afternoon and an evening, like just over a handful of hours, it wasn't long enough time to handle the way grief becomes tolerable over time, but instead leaves the characters still in the early stages of mourning.
Do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I mean, I come up with ideas I'd love to write, and I've even started writing a few, but I've never gotten any to a point where I'd begin posting them. Idk about particularly crazy, though both my Musketeers of Valdemar crossover AU and my The Warlock and the Hooded Man are crossovers between a decently popular fairly recent BBC show, and an older more obscure fantasy thing.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not really, not that I'd recall anyway and I don't feel like checking.
Do you write smut? if so what kind?
Nah, it's not my thing
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
If I have, no one's told me about it. I doubt it tho, my fics aren't popular enough
Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. I've considered translating a few of my own to Finnish for fun, but it seems kinda pointless bc no one would read them in Finnish, so I've never gotten around to.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. I'd like to try, but knowing the way I generally work (or rather, don't work) on fics, I don't think it'd be fair to whoever I tried doing it with if I did.
What’s your all time favorite ship?
Idk I'm not a huge shipper, really, so like. I sorta like a few but I don't really have favourites and I'm not super passionate about any particular ship.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Like, all of my ones I've started that I haven't touched in months. I'd like to finish them, but who am I kidding. I guess I'm obligated to point out Blood, Shadow, Silver in particular since I posted like three chapters of that before stopping writing it and haven't gotten around to continuing it. I'd like to think I'll come back to it one day, but who am I kidding?
What are your writing strengths?
What fucking strengths? You think I have any?
What are your writing weaknesses?
Like, everything. What in particular depends on the day.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I don't know I've never really done that on a big scale? Idk don't really have an opinion
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
I'm gonna take that to mean "first fandom I wrote for using the account I use now" because any other way to take that question I won't reply to. So, within those lines, unsurprisingly, LOTR.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
That's a good question. I sorta like most my fics from the last couple of years, but idk if there's any that I really-really like? The Darkness of Moria is one that comes to mind, and it's not necessarily my favorite personally of what I've written but thinking about it makes me feel good because it seems to be @talvenhenki's fave of my stuff.
Tagging uhhh idk @oncefutureemrys and anyone else who wants to do this because idk who to tag!

21 questions tag
rules:: answer 21 questions and then tag 21 people to do the same that you’d like to know better
(i don’t know 21 people in tumblr, and sure as hell i dont whant to look like a weirdo if i tag people who i never talk with, so, i will tag the ones i know, then 2 i like they blog. sorry ;_; )
i got tagged by @brian-maybe-not, thanks you soo much!
i was never tagged by someone in what, 4-5 years in tumblr, (i dont post that much of things, and i’m akward when i try to make friends in internet, so it was ‘normal’ to be a ‘ghost in tumblr’) but you did, and i will never stop thanks you enough! love you!
nicknames::
so, of nicknames I have had many, even if they have not remained: - in elementary school they called me Jaws, because I intimidated the school boys (I was very 'masculine' when I was little, and sometimes they mistaken me for a boy because I fought with them) -some friends called me shaon, because ‘it sound good with your personality!' (I never understood what they meant by this) -some are names that have taken the place of my real name, that sometimes people could not say well, like Carina, Marina, Helina, etc .. one, however, remained since my childhood, given by my parents, Costy.
(at the beginning I didn't like it, but as the years went by, I got used to it)
zodiac sign:: the zodiac sign of pisces :)
height:: I’m 5′0-1 (ish)......i’m short
hogwarts house:: I think I would be among the Gryffindors, because despite my being socially anxious, I am enough brave and loyal, and I like helping people (even if my hard-working nature can make one think of hufflepuff)
last thing i googled:: ......goggle traduction..... this is self explanatory
fav musicians:: hum ... so, my favorite band is Queen, (I need to explain why?) since I was little, my mother made me hear their classics, being a big fan too :) and is difficult to explain what I like about them ... their music is spectacular, and gives you an incomparable feeling of love (at least for me) their style, each of them artists with their different and unique personalities, they manage to put it together and create legendary music, together they formed a harmony, like the notes form a music. together they formed a family that few people have the privilege of knowing its warmth and love. (I could go on for hours, so let's talk about something else) I like the Beatles, as I said before, it was my mother who introduced them to me, and their music is iconic, wonderful, and every time I hear them on the radio it's hard not to start singing with them. for the more recent bands, I like Panic at the Disco, with interesting and very beautiful music, and incredible music videos (I like the art deign). then I like Linkin Park, even if sometimes their music is a little depressive, it's incredible and the feeling they give is beautiful. then, as individual artists, I like Ed Sheeran for his incredible music that it's impossible not to sing them. then there is Melanie Martinez, with her iconic WTF (as always, i love the artistic side) video, with music full of amazing messages and feelings (a bit sad, but still beautiful) I could go on for centuries to list which musics artists I like, but I don't want to make peole bored, so it's all for now
fav books:: then, my favorite books ... the lord of the rings, the hobbit and the silmarillion, then there is the saga of Eragorn (although the last book is not as beautiful as the others), Harry potter, and Narnia ( classic) as less classic books: the Medicus, Graceling, the tree of life, the saga of Inkheart, terese requin, la mort c'est mon metirer, my name is nobody, Sette volte gatto.
song stuck in your head:: there are many music or pieces of text of the music that remain in my head, and ultimately they are Queen ... damn. now i have 'somebody to love' and 'i whant to break free' in my head, and who knows what I'll have tomorrow ....
following:: 152
followers:: 175! wow, I never thought I'd go that far, and I thank you with all my heart for having the patience to follow me until now! I adore you (even if I don't know you ^^') after I finish the exams, I will open a small request space, and you can ask me any kind of drawing (no sexual ones. I'm not very comfortable with them)
do you get asks:: no. even if I'm open to talking. talk to me :)
amount of sleep:: hum .... after hours of art work, I can usually fall asleep around 1/2 at night, and I wake up at 4 am. at that moment I'm like a zombie and I try to go back to sleep, but I can't do that much any more, so, I'm in a kind of sleep-wake. at 6-7 in the morning, I have enough conscience, but not wanting to get out of bed, I take the phone and scroll tumblr or youtube. at 8 am I’m out of bed (this during the holidays, because when I'm under university, I wake up at 5 and get up at that time to study) i’m quite a morning person
lucky number:: 5 or 6, like the numbers of the people of my family :)
what are you wearing:: a black and white striped tank top and denim shorts with tights
dream job:: work in the production of animation, video games or cinema as art and design style :) or work with writers to get a decent movie script. or as an actress, even though I am nervous and akward, I have always enjoyed acting (and apparently I was also good, since my mother make me joined many times the theater)
I would like to inspire people, and make them feel with my works, make them happy and amazed :)
dream trip:: hum .... I don't have a precise destination, I'd like to go around the world and see the historical wonders of man and nature. I'd like to do it with someone, maybe a loved one with i would love to share the wonders of the earth. I am a hopeless romantic
instruments:: no. I tried different instruments, like piano and guitar, but I am denied playing them ... but I can sing, if this can be counted as an instrument
languages:: I know Italian because I am Italian, lol. but jokes aside, I speak fluent French and some English, (although I am fluent in writing in English, but not so much in writing French) then I would like to speak Spanish or German, I still have time :)
favorite songs::auch, I have a billion favorite music:
- Caravan Palace: Lone Digger. I'm crazy about the style of music similar to the 20s and 30s -Gorillaz: feel good inc. I love the singer's voice and the guitar of the central piece -Linkin Park: iridescent. I'm sorry, sad as it is, and one of my favorites -Katy Perry: Roar: the tiger and my sign in the Chinese zodiac, and my favorite animal (explains itself) -Eminem: Venom. that song is one of the coolest things in the world -Roberto Benigni: how much I loved you. I can not put this beautiful Italian song. it makes me full of love and it breaks my heart every time I listen - Melanie Martinez: baby i'm mad. christ, this song is fantastic. -Deiver Us from the - prince of Egypt -. omg, this music is spectacular. -QUEEN: Somebody to love, Killer Queen, I was born to love you, who wants to live forever, etc ... DO I NEED TO SAY WHY I LIKE? NO? WELL!
random fact:: hum ....
I have a love-hate relationship with my bicycle, because I had all my accidents on the road with it. (I was hit by a car twice, and crashed on a wall because the brakes didn't work)
I end up at the hospital so many times that I needed another pair of hands to count it. (I'm clumsy)
and lastly, although I am clumsy in the civilized world, I adore survival in the forests, and fight sword against sword with my cousin.
aesthetic:: ok ..... i don't have a precise style, maybe casual? with some 70s touches. maybe even a little hipster or nerd
ok ...... i will just tag some people I love and follow, ok?
@bowieandqueen11 , @avaloncelsus , @akhmenawkward , @innueendo , @ghostie-stories , @brian-maybe-not
(they are few people, but I like talking to them and follow they blog, so forgive me if you never talked to me, I'm just a poor girl)

BTS Members as the Sons of Feanor
OH MY GOSH WHAT THE HECK
so @thelonelybrilliance just showed up late to the Silmarillion and new to BTS and she decided to break my brain by tagging me and @abadpoetwithdreams asking us if we could match up the 7 members of BTS with the 7 sons of Feanor. May she never ask such a question again because I have spent about 6 hours total writing this rant essay that is somewhere of abouts 3500 words. I don’t have the self-control to stop myself from things like this, I love Tolkien and BTS too much
anyway here is a very long and rambling post that was partially composed in my head in the shower and is now just stream of consciousness
(Disclaimer: The members of BTS are beautiful souls and this post is in no way saying that they are as murderous as my problematic faves the sons of Feanor)
ok so the only thing I know for ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN is that Namjoon is Maedhros. if you know anything at all about BTS and the Feanorians, the reasons are obvious:
1. Namjoon is the tallest, and Maedhros is literally called Maedhros the Tall.
2. Maedhros has a lot of names but he was called Maitimo by his mom which means “beautiful” or “well-shaped one” and such an appellation is perfect for Namjoon (ok let’s be real the name could fit every single member of BTS but whatever)
3. (and most important!) never was there a more harried elf trying to keep his brothers in line and alive and not cut to pieces by some justifiably insulted cousin or Sindarin. Maedhros is the mom, the dad, the king, the leader, the eldest bro. “Guys, can we NOT be rude to the sons of Finarfin, can we NOT start a war among the Noldor when we still have Morgoth just across the way” I’m pretty sure he would also lose his passport multiple times if Middle-earth had such things, because his brothers are hard enough to keep track of. while Namjoon may not be the eldest in years, everything else matches up too perfectly. He is the leader of BTS, the spokesman, the one who encourages the other members to step up and speak, helps them with their English (even when he judges them for their dumb mistakes lol), is literally SO DONE with his bros all the time but loves them so freaking much. He is the planner, the peace-maker, yet also has fire in his veins and has seen a lot of darkness and suffering and survived to become even stronger. So too with Namjoon
(caveat: if BTS were Feanorians, and Namjoon captured by Morgoth himself, there is no freaking way they wouldn’t have done SOMETHING to rescue their fearless leader. Jin and Jungkook would storm Thangorodrim fists swinging, followed by Jimin and J-Hope, fierce like you’ve never seen them, and Taehyung would Luthien Tinuviel Morgoth centuries early, or Yoongi would simply glare at Morgoth till he shrank down into a puddle of trembling goo. Don’t laugh at me you know I’m right)
moving on
I have maybe two choices for Maglor? One is Jin, but that might partially be because everyone always talks about how Namjoon and Jin are the mom and dad or dad and mom of BTS. and Maglor is always paired in my head with Maedhros as the other parental figure of the Feanorian bros, though that might be because of how he and Maedhros look after Elrond and Elros. Of course, I love Jin’s singing and I will never ever ever be over “Epiphany”, so I am way cool with making Jin Maglor as far as the music thing goes
All this said, I am not sure if this is the best fit overall. Jin is the King of Chaos in BTS, and I wouldn’t name Maglor as such...also I think I might have another Feanorian for Jin, but I’ll get to that later (spoilers, it’s...Curufin??!) (oh no, I just realized I might have one other argument for Jin being Maglor: “I use other people to make myself happy. I make myself smile by making others smile.” Like, that could be a good quote for Maglor potentially, if you want to relate it to his music, or his care for Elrond and Elros……..but I’m still thinking Curufin for Jin. Stay tuned)
So anyway my other option for Maglor would be...oh heck no I have two other options. No wait THREE. What the HECK. ok let me figure this out. The options are J-Hope, Yoongi, and Jimin. I’m not even sure why yet so let’s find out. (sidenote: if Maedhros did not exist Namjoon the song-writer would be Maglor, as the greatest poet and bard)
1. J-Hope as Maglor: I don’t know, I had reasons but they are escaping me. Maglor is said to have had a gentler temperament than his brothers and I would say J-Hope has a very soft sunshine heart. I guess one thing is that Maglor was left to hold everybody together when Maedhros was captured by Morgoth, and if Namjoon was ever hung on a cliff for an indeterminate amount of time or whatever equals that in our world, J-Hope would step up. I keep seeing things about how he supports the other members when they are having tough times, giving them encouragement and food and love. He leads them in practicing dance choreography all the time, and if I remember I am pretty sure Namjoon actually stated that Hoseok would make a good group leader.
Also one time Namjoon was talking about Hobi (oh shoot, should J-Hope of the many names be Maedhros of the many names? Lol maybe in that one universe where Namjoon is Maglor, then Hobi could could be Maedhros) Namjoon says that J-Hope is like water (where did Maglor toss his Silmaril again hmm?) and puts people at ease. Well idk about other people but Maglor seems to have put Elrond and Elros at ease because even after that whole Kinslaying thing “love grew between them as little might be thought.” I too would probably come to love J-Hope no matter the past between us. He is just that sweet and soft-hearted
2. Yoongi as Maglor: ok honestly I really really actually want Yoongi for Caranthir, more on that later. However I also like Yoongi as Maglor because it is unexpected, yet certain things just feel right. I keep thinking about Yoongi’s “First Love” where he raps about how his PIANO was his first love (GOSH ISN’T THAT THE SWEETEST THING EVER) also in Lee Sora’s “Song Request” he raps this: “I’m happiness to someone and the soul to another / A lullaby to someone and at times a noise / I’ll be with you at your birth and your end / Remember we’re always together anywhere / I’ll always console your life / So just lean on me and rest sometimes” and LOOK I JUST DIED TYPING THIS but what I am getting at is music is burnt into Yoongi’s soul as I think it is Maglor’s, and Yoongi really is very soft and loving and also one time Namjoon said that Yoongi “makes me ponder about what kind of person I am” and Maglor several times is a voice of reason and very much tries to dissuade Maedhros from going after the Silmarils one last time. Idk it could work (but also...CARANTHIR) (BUT ALSO OMG YOONGI’S VOICE MURDERS ME WHEN HE RAPS AND HIS PASSION WOW AND NOW I AM PICTURING MODERN DAY MAGLOR RAPPING OBLIQUELY ABOUT HIS FAMILY AND PAST AND PAIN UGGGGGGGHHHH
3. Who was my other choice? Right, Jimin. Why did I say Jimin?? ? i don’t remember, dang it
Ok I think it is definitely time to do Caranthir.
As previously stated, I love Yoongi as Caranthir. I have my reasons personally I think they are very good reasons :D Ok Caranthir is WOW ok I am OFFENDED because I just went to double-check something on wikipedia and I typed Caranthir into the Google search engine and the first three results were all about this Caranthir dude from the Witcher, and while that game seems very interesting I am UPSET for Yoongi’s I mean Caranthir the Dark’s sake.
AHEM
Caranthir the Dark. What a name. I mean it might just be a reference to his father-name of Morifinwe and to his hair, but he is also described as being the harshest and quickest to anger. Yoongi, bless his soul and his actually very soft and squishy heart, is well known for: being unbothered by BTS general antics, for being the one to sit back and watch everyone else do dumb stuff (like when they were all dancing to MIC drop and he just walks away from them, or when they are all acting like kids jumping in the pool and he just watches with a smile on his face while drinking a glass of wine and look to me Caranthir is the one Feanorian who doesn’t pair up with anyone in particular, like we have Maedhros and Maglor, Celegorm and Curufin, Amrod and Amras, but Caranthir is the one who goes off and lives separate from them and
GOSH now I sound so dumb because I am NOT trying to say that Caranthir doesn’t love his bros or that Yoongi is a loner that is NOT what I am saying, agh I mean Caranthir is great (minus, you know, the kin-slayings the Feanorians sadly fall into) and even befriends Haleth’s people and protects them, t’s just this weird categorizing thing in my head, that Caranthir is the crusty brother, and while he loves his bros to DEATH and they him, the majority of his bros are sliiiiightly afraid of him, in a brotherly way, like how the members are with Yoongi! Like just recently oh what was it, they were on a BTS Run episode and someone had to splash or otherwise give Yoongi a penalty and right away everyone was like NAMJOON YOU DO IT. turning to the leader hyung because they don’t want Yoongi to be mad at them
Of course now I am remembering that one post of gifs demonstrating how Jungkook is the only one who can bother Yoongi without dying lol except NOW I am picturing Amrod the youngest Feanorian* being the only one who can bother Caranthir and then the ensuing PAIN because Amrod Umbarto (thanks for THAT name, Mom) perishes (in certain canon) in flames at the Burning of the Ships and wowwww no I do not need any of this pain
*SIDENOTE: AMROD IS THE YOUNGEST IN CERTAIN CANON WHICH CONFUSES THINGS A HECK OF A LOT SEE THE AMROD AND AMRAS SECTION BELOW
I’m pretty sure I have never rambled so much in my life and also pretty sure I have way too many parentheses and not all of them are closed oops
Anyway, imagine Caranthir as the brother you are afraid of but would die for and who would die for you if anyone looks at you wrong, the brother with the wry acerbic wit, but who LITERALLY LIGHTS UP THE UNIVERSE WITH HIS SMILE AND ALSO DOESN’T EXPRESS HIS LOVE ALOUD AS OFTEN AS SOME OF YOUR BROTHERS DO BUT
HE SECRETLY LOVES PHYSICAL CONTACT AT TIMES AND ALSO SECRETLY LOVES PIGGY-BACK RIDES EVEN THO HE PROFESSES TO HATE THEM AND GIVES OUT WISE LIFE ADVICE TO HIS BROS AND HIS PEOPLE AND IS SUCH A SOFTIE FOR HIS BROS AND OCCASIONALLY SENDS ONE OF HIS BABY BROS LONG LETTERS WITH A SIMPLE “I LOVE YOU” AT THE END THAT HAS CELEGORM OR AMROD CRYING FOR TEN MINUTES (HAHAHA GUESS WHO I THINK TAEHYUNG WOULD BE)
Also someone has to be the best cook of the Feanorians and it might as well be Caranthir
….apparently I’m not done with Caranthir, because “the Dark” also makes me think of a dark horse, or at least something happening that is unexpected, and that reminds me of that interview where dad/mom/interpreter Namjoon was like yeah none of the other members can speak English, and then Yoongi just out of NOWHERE speaks a line of great English and Namjoon was like ….guess I was wrong
OKAAAAY WHERE ARE WE
I do not have very clear thoughts about who the rest of the members are so let’s just go with my brain and hope it makes some good connections
Let’s do Celegorm since I just mentioned him
Celegorm could be either Taehyung or….Jin? :? Merrr idk. Let’s examine
I think the main reason why I jump at the option of Tae for Celegorm is because of Tae’s love for his dog Yeontan, or Tan, and of course Celegorm is the master of Huan, and they had a very special relationship for ages until Celegorm f---ed up. Seriously, you want to see something cute? Look up Tae’s Vlive that is entirely focused on his lil pupper (what am I saying look up ANYTHING about Tae and you will find something cute)
On the other hand Jin could be Celegorm because Celegorm is known as the Fair and if you don’t know by now that Jin is World Wide Handsome I don’t know how I can help you
OMG WAIT I JUST THOUGHT OF OTHER REASONS WHY JIN COULD BE CELEGORM! So Celegorm’s father-name is Turcafinwë, which basically means “strong in body” and Jin has got those broad shoulders (gosh they are so broad). Also, Celegorm’s mother-name is Tyelkormo, or “hasty riser,” referring to his quick temper and habit of leaping when angered. And this doesn’t perfectly relate but the amount of times I have seen Jin yelling or just being wild in general or even just pretending to be mad makes me think of this. Also there was one time idk what was even going on but Jin was struggling to pronounce Bangtansonyeon-dan (SAME) and saying it was too long and difficult and J-Hope was teasing him and Namjoon told him not to get mad since he had been calling himself a fairy and shouldn’t be mad as such, and Jin was like hey I can be a mad fairy if I want lol
See now I am just confused because now I am looking back at Jin as Maglor and I might like that better? WHY IS THIS SO HARD
Speaking of Jin, and Celegorm, why on EARTH was I thinking of Jin for Curufin? Ugggh see my problem is I ran out of time last night and so I am finishing the essay some 20 hours later and I kNOW that when I was saying Jin should be Curufin I had a better reason then their names rhyme. Heck, I could make that same argument for Jimin as Curufin.
Except I also have a second and better argument for Jimin as Curufin, at least under the circumstance where Taehyung is Celegorm. Look, all the BTS members are really close with each other, and you can literally argue all day about who is closer to who (a really pointless waste of time in my opinion I mean why argue when you can just melt over them all being sweet and funny and kind and teasing with each other) but anyway all that aside one thing I love in particular is how sweet Jimin and Taehyung often are with each other, holding hands and comforting each other and being on teams in competitions *starts laughing at the memory of them being complete disasters that one cooking show* and anyway Celegorm and Curufin seem pretty inseparable, running around causing all kinds of trouble (guys sTOP). Jimin and Taehyung have called themselves soulmates, so it makes sense to have them be part of a duo
Not that Taehyung would engage in a kidnapping stunt like Celegorm did, but the point is, Jimin, the precious bby, has Tae’s back
Jimin: “Taehyung is the happiest when he is with me” aww
This has nothing to do with the point of this post but I just need to stop here and say that Jimin is so freaking talented I was just looking up some gifsets of him and obviously his singing is angelic but also OMGGG his dancing!!!
Ok, jumping back slightly, I guess one way Jin could be Curufin is if Jungkook is Celegorm, because I could see those beautiful dorks running around causing all kinds of trouble, except I really have no reason to have Jungkook be Celegorm, especially since he is very much Amras in my head for reasons
OOOH NO I also thought of a way in which Jungkook could be--wait for it--cURUFIN. WHY AM I LIKE THIS
You see, Curufin was his dad’s favorite son and thus Feanor gave his favorite son the exact same father-name Feanor had, Curufinwë, and Curufin is the only son who chose to use his father-name over his mother-name if I recall, and anyway all meaning he probably loved his dad a lot and was proud of his name, and this makes me think of how Namjoon gave Jungkook the title of the Golden Maknae and of how freaking much Jungkook looks up to and respects Namjoon (look while Namjoon is a hyung, he is also a dad figure, so he may as well be Feanor and Maedhros both)
I guess if Jungkook were Curufin, Jin could go back to being Celegorm
Aaaaggggh you do not know how much hair I have pulled out this is taking a lot of brainwork
FINALLY AT THE LAST TWO
We now present my exceedingly confused ramblings regarding the twins Amrod and Amras. Before we begin, let me SHAKE MY FIST AT TOLKIEN FOR MAKING THIS ESSAY EVEN MORE CONFUSING TO WRITE
See, I had Jungkook all set up in my head as Amras, the youngest son according to the Silmarillion. Jungkook is the maknae, the baby, and all the members DOTE on him and he loves them and respects them and pesters them and it’s great, so yeah Jungkook has to be Amras the baby of the Feanorians. I would then put Taehyung as Amrod, the just barely older bby who the other members also adore and protect. Jungkook and Taehyung are SO FREAKING CUTE whenever they are doing stuff together, whether it is singing or hugging or holding each other on their backs while they singing. When they goof off together or pester each other, they are the most precious, must dorkiest dorks to ever be my faves. Hence why I pair them together in my head as Amrod and Amras, at least the times when I am not pairing Tae with Jimin or Jungkook with Jin. Amrad and Amras seem as inseparable as Celegorm and Curufin, and they go off and live in some beautiful wild part of the land and basically stick to hunting and staying out of everyone’s business until they get reminded they took a stupid oath
EXCEPT then Tolkien has one alternate writing where the youngest is actually AMROD and Amrod dies at the burning of the ships because Feanor doesn’t know how to count his kids I guess (Namjoon you lost something again) (sorry that is a terrible joke) (but is it made slightly better by the fact that while Namjoon is apparently Feanor he is much more Maedhros, who was against the burning of the ships and did not participate?) so like this is where I started to get my third headache (exacerbated by the fact that I haven’t eaten dinner yet and it is 9 pm what is wrong with me) because then I have to make Jungkook Amrod and Taehyung Amras. It’s such a trial having to write both their names next to both Feanorians
On the other hand, an interesting thing to think about is that in this alternate writing, Amras was so aggrieved by his brother’s death that he called out Feanor--Feanor!--for being so dumb as to A. call or let his wife call their youngest by the name of Umbarto (the Fated) and then to B. accidentally let him perish in a fire that FEANOR started because he had a grudge (and I think Tolkien wrote that that Amrod was possibly sleeping on the ships because he was upset with Feanor for the terrible deeds he was committing, so like, double way to go Feanor)
I am really tired and hungry my head hurts
What am I missing?
I like Taehyung and Jungkook best for Amrod and Amras a lot BUT if I were doing one of the other options above, I could see having the follow lineup:
Jin=Celegorm, Jungkook= Curufin, Jimin=Amrod, Taehyung=Amras
In this instance, I could see Jimin and Tae as either Amrod or Amras no matter which one is older. Taehyung could definitely be the bby and do his own thing but could also be the brother who mourns his brother and calls out Feanor. Actually though Jimin while being young and precious gives me more of an older brother vibe than Taehyung does, so I guess I would have Jimin be the elder of the twins. Yes, that makes more sense
UGH but wait if I put Jimin and Tae as Curufin and Celegorm, I could put Jungkook back as youngest bby Amrod or Amras, but would Jin fit into the older twin role? Maaaaybe, if you just think about Jungkook and Jin heading off by themselves and goofing off...I don’t like it as much though
Possibilities So Far
Maedhros: Namjoon, maybe J-Hope?
Maglor: Jin, J-Hope, Yoongi, maybe Namjoon
Caranthir: Yoongi
Celegorm: Taehyung, Jin
Curufin: Jimin, Jungkook
Amrod: Taehyung, Jungkook, Jimin
Amras: Jungkook, Taehyung, Jimin
……………………….
I have spent five minutes now trying to figure out possible final line-ups but it’s all a mess
I LITERALLY CAN’T THINK ANYMORE
I DECLARE THIS ESSAY/RANT HAS COME TO AN END
PLEASE CHELSEA SEND HELP!
WHAT AM I MISSING/HAVE WRONG? IS THERE A BETTER SPOT FOR J-HOPE? SHOULD SOMEONE ELSE BE CARANTHIR? COULD JIN BE A CARANTHIR IN SOME WAY?? (I THINK I COULD HAVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THAT BUT I AM TOO TIRED TO THINK THEM)
#the silmarillion#the sons of feanor#feanorians#tolkien#bts#do i tag all 7 sons of Feanor and all 7 members of bts? or would that be obnoxious and useless#yeah probably#emma what have you done to me#chelsea i cannot WAIT to hear your thoughts#*goes to make dinner*

Eleven questions (tag)
Got tagged by @gaolcrowofmandos - thank you! :)
1) Which Tolkien book was the first you read?
The Two Towers. I received the LotR trilogy as a gift, but didn't immediately start reading it - then one day, I had nothing to read so I picked up TTT - I knew it was the second book of the trilogy, but I just couldn't find the first one, and I wanted to make sure it was worth looking for by just taking a look at the second book. The problem was... well, I started reading and I just couldn't put the book down, so I went through with it. Then I picked up RotK, and THEN I started over with FotR. By that time, I was well and truly lost.
2) After reading which Tolkien book did you realize you were hooked?
- answered above - but I think the true beginning of the end was 'The Silmarillion'. Like, WOW.
3) Tom Bombadil theory of choice?
I've always thought he was one of the Blue Wizards, but now, knowing their names and all, I don't think my theory holds its ground very much.
4) Describe (or link, if you want!) one of the first fics or pieces of art you enjoyed in the Tolkien fandom.
When it comes to fanart, it's got to be Jenny Dolfen and Catherine Chmiel. And when it comes to fanfiction... actually, I wrote my first pieces of fanfiction when I was, like, 5, and I could only write with ugly capital letters. When later on, I discovered Internet and fanfiction and all, it came as a complete shock that WOW, THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE DOING THIS :O Most of the first fics I've read came from my friends, but if you're looking for curiosities, discover Trollmela's AU Silmarillion/LotR stories on Fanfiction.net, where Maedhros and Maglor survive through the First, Second and Third Ages. I really liked those... an example among many.
5) If you were a Maia, which Vala would you choose to serve and why?
Ulmo - no one messes with Ulmo. Or Orome, because I like to be out there in the woods.
6) Favorite Tolkien poem? (If it’s one of the Lays, do you have a favorite part/canto?)
'The Last Ship' among MANY.
7) Best thing about the Jackson films?
The respectful handling of the source material, within the circumstances. Honestly, I think they have tried, especially in the LotR trilogy, and in many cases, they did Tolkien's world justice. OK, not always, but I personally think that even my huge purist ass can look at the LotR movie trilogy and give an approving nod. Also, the music is phenomenal in all three movies (and in The Hobbit, too!), as is the choice of actors. Martin Freeman's Bilbo almost (ALMOST) beats Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn. But... well, Viggo Mortensen IS Aragorn.
8) Worst thing about the Jackson films?
Tauriel. She could have been an AWESOME character, she could have appeared as if she came straight out of the Professor's novels... I really looked forward to seeing her before the second movie came out, I recall being pretty hyped about her... and they just made her a shallow love interest who disregards her King's orders, and in general, is an ignorant, annoying piece of sh*t. Seldom have I been so disappointed.
(and Denethor eating that tomato... I think this is becoming a constant trope in the fandom...)
9) Would you rather live in Rivendell or Lothlórien?
100% Rivendell.
10) Does a Balrog have wings?
Oh :) I've sat through a 3 hour-long session of the Hungarian Tolkien Society on that matter, and I still can't decide for sure. I think I picture them WITH wings, it's just more badass that way.
11) Favorite First Age character who is not an Elf or a Dark Lord?
Túrin (Think-You're-Problematic?-Hold-My-Beer) Turambar / although he's ALMOST a Dark Lord... /
yeah, and let's not forget Azaghal!
/you know I’m a terrible person and never go through with challenges, right? /

Writing meme
I was tagged by @maedhrosrussandol ! Thanks!
1) How many works in progress do you currently have? (counts) 21 (eek!) In all states from ‘I will probably never finish this’ to ‘posting, almost done’. I have 5 Tolkien ones that will probably be completed and posted, one Arthurian, and one original. I suspect the other 14 will probably languish forever, but you never know.
2) Do you/would you write fanfiction? Yes I do. I find it much easier to finish fanfic than original fiction.
3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks? I prefer ebooks for reference and quick reads because of searchability, portability and ease of updates, but paper for treasured fiction, because it’s more durable and a longer-term thing.
4) When did you start writing? I wrote short stories at school, and poetry at university. Then I intermittently started original stories that never got finished for a long while, till the Eagle movie came out in 2011, and rekindled my love of Sutcliff, and I started writing Eagle of the Ninth fanfic.
5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with? Occasionally I force my husband to act as a beta-reader. I’m not sure if that counts as ‘trust!’ I like using a beta-reader, but it’s a lot of work to ask for longer fiction.
6) Where is your favorite place to write? Laptop on sofa or on the floor in front of the fire.
7) Favorite childhood book? Many! Eagle of the Ninth, Charmed Life, Lord of the Rings and Earthsea are all up there. Also Smiley’s People, Murder Must Advertise, Eight Days of Luke, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The King of the Copper Mountain, The Ice is Coming, Swallows and Amazons... OK. There are many books.
8) Writing for fun or publication? For fun mostly, though I wrote some ‘how to’ booklets about the early internet in the 90′s, have done a little travel writing and also produced copy about alpaca farming and the deliciousness of pasties. I’d love to write some original historical fiction. Maybe when I’m done with all those WIPS...
9) Pen and paper or computer? Computer. My longhand writing skills are terrifyingly rusty, and I was never fast writing that way anyway, I can type much faster than I can write, and also I tend to revise as I write so I find not being able to go back and easily change a sentence frustrating.
10) Have you ever taken any writing classes? no. Well, only English Language at school. Oh, and I tried to work through Ursula Le Guin’s book about writing ‘Steering the Craft’ doing all the different exercises. It’s a really good book!
11) What inspires you to write? Sometimes it’s because the characters are in my head talking and it’s a vain attempt to get them out of there so I can use my brain for something useful ( I don’t know why I keep trying this. It only encourages them.) Sometimes it’s an exchange prompt, for the joy of writing something crafted for a single specific reader. Sometimes it’s a ‘what if?’ or a comment on an existing story that sets off an idea. And occasionally, I admit, it’s because I saw someone say something I think is blindingly silly on the internet and it rouses me to write a contradiction in fiction form. Many years ago, for example, I saw a manifestly silly comment about Roman Britain not having a common technology that they demonstrably did have. So I wrote 8,000 words of cheerful adventure which was entirely readable on its own (I hope!), where people were incidentally using this particular technology in various ways and showing how it fitted into their economy and worldview. I am horribly petty. But I am pretty sure I was the only one who knew how petty I was being.
I tag.... @hhimring @edgeoflight @lordnelson100 @veilfireshadows @elesianne if they want to!
