I’m trying to work up the courage to go to a swimming pool for the first time in over a decade. Any advice?

Oh that's not an easy one. It takes courage, and preparation.

What helps me: planning it in advance. I check the schedule and pick a time slot for adults, so there's less noise and chaos. I check in advance which bus I'll need to take. I look up pictures of the facilities on google maps.

I prepare my sports bag with all the things I need. Swimsuit, goggles, swimming cap, towel, padlock, hair dryer, clean underwear, deodorant.

And I leave the bag there, ready, for when I have the spoons to actually leave the house.

I shopped very carefully for my swimsuit. I had a couple from beach vacations, but swimming laps requires something else. I wanted a two-piece because one-piece just pulls on my crotch. I wanted the top to be cami to hide my belly. It had to have good breast support with an integrated bra so my breasts wouldn't be squished and uncomfortable. It had to have thick straps or a racer back to give enough support. Never behind the neck straps.

My towel is a large beach towel since I'm a big person. I like to be able to completely wrap myself in it when I'm walking around the pool.

I put on my swimsuit at home, under my clothes. It's easier to do it in my room, on my own time, than in a little cold stall.

And the only goal I set for the first time is to reach the pool. If I get in, even better. If I swim a lap, even better. But the bar is set very low. Just seeing the pool will make the next time easier.

It's easier to go with someone else, at first. But doing it alone is doable, too.
