You're the Only Friend I Need a Trobed fic

Author's Notes: Wow I have been very inactive and I'm also going on vacation so I rushed to finish this, I'll beautify this post along with my BT fanfic later. I saw this beautiful Trobed artwork on Tumblr by @greatredangel and it made me think of the song Ribs by Lorde. Then I visualized them dancing at a bar to the song while Abed is having bittersweet thoughts. It became this. Hope y'all enjoy Troy and Abed in a ba-ar! Again?

Also I just realized really late that Ribs was released three years after Mixology Certification aired but oh well, I love the song and I try meta-referencing my misstep in the fic lmao. Comment and feedback is well-appreciated! This is my first time writing Community fanfic and I hope I didn't screw up, especially with writing Abed. He's the best. They're all just the best, I love this show so much. Comments and feedback are appreciated! This whole thing is just wholesome romantic fluff with very light angst that gets resolved anyway, no trigger warnings! This made me so happy to write!

Someone stormed away.

That’s how it always happened.

Abed didn’t choose to have more interest in dissecting the implications of Farscape being an influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the ragtag character dynamics of the crew of the Moya , or the suspicion that Greendale was headed in a similar direction to the fourth season which, frankly, he might have preferred to get interrupted before speaking about.

Not that he had a choice. One of the few people who understood his references was interested in something more…carnal. 

But Abed knew what he liked, what he thought, what he was good at. And being straightforward with it, absorbing and deconstructing every little detail? 

It was what passion was. At least for him.

The inner workings of bumbling off-duty patrons drowning their daily sorrows into looking to score, on the other hand? Not at all. 

He did see it coming. He was all but waiting for the rejection. But it was fun talking about Farscape .

While it lasted.

Nevertheless, it was Monday. And as expected, he was just fine. It was an odd night.

His thoughts turned to Troy. With the study group more amped up than usual due to the alcohol, he realized Troy got left alone due to the ensuing drama. 

Thus ruining his birthday.

“Hey, Troy?” 

Troy looked at him. Abed felt that rush of energy that always came whenever he did. “Yeah, Abed?” It was cliche, but the birthday surprise trope was still a classic. “There’s something I forgot to give you for your birthday. Happy belated birthday, by the way.”

A surprised smile lit up Troy’s face. “Really? This is too much, man. I’m still losing it over Kickpuncher.”

“I figured. With the abundance of alcohol in the study group, perhaps an easygoing, intimate night out on the town as Troy and Abed should make for a nicer birthday. Shall we?”

Troy clapped his hands. “Let’s roll.”

They did the handshake. Their handshake.

Abed was not a driver.

He legally was, but avoided it unless it was an occasion where he absolutely had, or even more rarely, wanted to.

This was one such occasion.  

“No way, is this the same bar?” Troy gaped slightly, moving forward in his seat as he recognized Flannahan’s Hole.

“The second chance trope is a bit stale, but a well-done redemption arc works wonders,” Abed confirmed as he parked the car.

Troy laughed as he and Abed got out and headed inside. It looked exactly the same as it did on Troy’s birthday: just like any other bar, albeit apparently the least offensive of them if Jeff and Britta’s word was anything to go by.

To Abed’s relief though, the man from earlier wasn’t there.

“Abed?” Troy asked. Abed immediately recognized his hesitating tone, and felt something akin to a pang in his heart.

“Troy?” Abed knew he talked quickly, but his response was a bit faster and more urgent than usual. If Troy was nervous or on edge, Abed might as well have ruined another birthday for him.

“I…don’t really want to drink,” Troy began, taking a breath and looking to the ground, gathering his thoughts. Then Troy locked eyes with him.

Momentarily, nothing existed except Troy.

“When I was ordering my drink, I…I saw how out of it everyone was, staring off into space, not able to feel much of anything, not able to do much of anything…we just didn’t look happy.” Troy’s tone was candid, kind, mournful, his usual cheerful energy replaced by a more careful, concerned tone. 

“So, I didn’t drink. I got everyone and drove us home.”

Abed remembered that as the other members of the study group were drowning figuratively or literally in their personal misery, Troy was the one to bring them back together. 

“Sorry,” Troy said with a bit of uncertainty, embarrassed when he shouldn’t have to feel bad because Abed reminded him of a day he had to hold everyone else together.

When Troy deserved one where the roles were reversed.

Abed swallowed. He wanted to say only the best possible words.

“Me neither, honestly,” he started. “You don’t have anything to be sorry for. It’s your birthday.”

Troy smiled, the previous moment forgotten. “Thanks, Abed.”

A new song started playing overhead in the bar. Abed squinted his eyes slightly. 

The drink you spilt all over me…

He undoubtedly knew movies better than music, but the song felt out of place for some reason. Was it a continuity error? He hadn’t heard it on the radio before. Weird. 

My mom and dad let me stay home…

“Do you want to dance?” Troy’s question shook Abed out of his thoughts, and he looked at Troy, calm yet eager about his suggestion. Abed couldn’t help but oblige, and the song piqued his interest the longer he listened to it.

”Sure.”

How you wish it would be all the time…

There wasn’t a whole lot of space within the bar, so Abed and Troy just moved close to a few empty seats. Unlike some of their choreographed or improvised dance routines which were occasionally elaborate, they kept it simple due to the nature of the event, and the difference this particular song had from their usual background music.

It drives you crazy getting old…

Abed was coolly and steadily hopping up and down, raising his left, then right leg to the beat. Troy took to clapping to the beat as he got into the song. 

Abed didn’t have many great memories as a kid.

This dream isn't feeling sweet, we're reeling through the midnight streets…

But right here, right now, dancing alone with Troy, he knew.

This. This was what childhood was supposed to be.

Doing whatever you felt like doing, not worrying about anything else, just having fun.

So what if he was only truly living it right now, as a film student in the most chaotic community college in the world?

He was living it. And for however long it would last?

It feels so scary, getting old....

He would enjoy it.

Abed hadn’t realized he had his eyes closed the whole time since he started dancing until he opened them to look straight at Troy.

Everything else went still.

Troy had a smile of pure ecstasy and euphoria and was moving completely of his own accord, not trying to impress, not having to try anything , just…dancing, and enjoying it.

We can talk it so good, we can make it so divine…

His hips swayed perfectly as he bounced to the beat, his knees smoothly kicking out as he bobbed up and down, not breaking a sweat. His head twisted from side to side, carefree and peaceful. He moved his elbows and hands up and down rhythmically with ease. And of course, that smile.

Has Abed seen Troy dance before? Many times.

But none so picturesque as this exact moment.

Then Troy opened his eyes. If things were still before, it wasn’t comparable to this.

I want ‘em back, I want ‘em back, the minds we had, the minds we had…

Troy’s eyes were a bit more serious, curious, and earnest. He stepped closer to Abed, still perfectly on beat.

How all the thoughts, how all the thoughts, moved ‘round our heads, moved ‘round our heads…

Abed was still slightly moving his legs to the beat, but he was focused on stepping as close as Troy saw fit.

I want ‘em back, I want ‘em back, the minds we had, the minds we had…

They kept moving closer. They didn’t notice the bar patrons staring.

It’s not enough to feel the lack, I want ‘em back, I want ‘em back, I want ‘em!

And their lips touched. Their eyes closed as they danced more slowly now, their arms now touching each other. Supporting each other.

He’d never let him fall.

You’re the only friend I need, sharing beds like little kids…

They just stayed there, now only slowly moving from side to side once every measure of the song, their grip on each other soft not to overwhelm, but steady, never to let the other go.

And laughing till our ribs get tough, but that will never be enough… “YEAH!” yelled people in the background as applause and cheers were heard, the first time he had focused on the outside world in a bit. Abed rarely ever had applause and cheers for him, neither did he seek it, but in this specific moment, it invigorated him. It did the same for Troy, as they briefly removed their lips to take a breath before diving back in, emboldened.

Troy and Abed released each other, parting with powerful, slow breaths. Troy was staring with him, those same earnest eyes, but with total adoration and awe.

Based on his expression, Abed knew he shared the equivalent facial expression.

And laughing till our ribs get tough, but that will never be enough... “Good enough?” Abed asked Troy at the song’s end. Speaking to him was always comforting, but it felt like it had escalated to a whole new level now.

“Never better,” Troy answered in the most angelic, warmest tone Abed had ever heard.

They basked in the joy of the rest of the bar, all of them happy for them, for Troy and Abed. Troy laughed, equal parts blushing and grateful. Abed nodded at them in equally thankful acknowledgement. 

As they walked out, Abed caught the eye of the guy from earlier. He must have come in after them.

Compared to his more irritable, sour impression upon their first meeting, the bar guy was glad, sincere. He had a gentle, knowing smile. There were a variety of meanings he could derive from his face. First of all, he felt bad for his behavior during the last meeting. Secondly, he was happy for him and Abed. 

“Hey, I see you're going through stuff, and I'm sorry I didn't see that earlier,” the bar guy started a bit awkwardly. Then he seemed to be emboldened himself as well. “But I get it now, and I'm happy for you. For the both of you."

It was validating, to say the least. 

“Thank you,” Abed responded. “It was a better night.”

“I can see,” the bar guy giggled, looking at the two a bit sheepishly. “Okay, okay, we get it,” Troy was trying like mad to calm down, but he was clearly bashful.

As Abed drove the two away from the bar, they were quiet for a long time, processing the moment they just had.

Troy broke the silence first.

“Abed…is it okay if I want more moments like that?”

Abed had never felt so at peace in his life.

“I was going to ask the same thing,” he said in a soft tone he didn’t even know he was capable of.

Troy beamed yet again, and initiated their running gag. Abed immediately caught on. “Troy and Abed to-ge-ther!”

I like both storage systems. Etho's is significantly more functional (and less likely to explode, scar that minecart is making me wary) but I really enjoy the aesthetic of Scar's.

Hey I found your post about the Castlevania shipping somewhat unlike you, in the past I have seen you defend nsfw art of Sonic characters who are minors, or brushing of shipping kids with adults but you're clearly upset at problematic power imbalance and noncon tropes in shipping adults. I just wonder does that mean you have changed your mind on the topic ???

Alright, I can see why it seems that I'm being a hypocrite. I'll try to explain myself in the best way I can, even if I question your wording.

I don't hate power imbalance and noncon/dubcon at all. They're some of my favorite tropes, and I am not particularly shy in talking about it :P and it's precisely because I an fascinated by them that poor writing incenses me and I can't stop thinking about it. However, this is the part I have to highlight: poor writing in official products, because comparing a very popular Netflix show written by a respected professional who got paid and promoted for his work, with a 20 kudos fanfiction written by some nameless teen for free, is disingenuous. One has tremendous reach and the other has not.

In the responses in that post (I'm assuming you're talking about this one - hope it's this one because otherwise I'd look dumb lol), I eventually said "I have more respect for the fans who just find the abuse hot". There are thousands of fanfics that are irrealistic when it comes to abusive dynamics, that are literally nothing more than fetish fuel - and that's fine. I wouldn't read them, I would appreciate if people did more research, but they're harmless. Disgust is not harm and in this I have not changed my mind.

My problem with that particular ship is not necessarily the "noncon" part (which is not even noncon: it's dubcon, it's deliberately murky). It's that the noncon part, and not even in a porn fic but in an official product that is praised for the depth of its writing, gets brushed off, because the writing was rushed and made artificially more "wholesome". The dissonance of morals is too big for me to ignore, and the resounding success that it got from its audience even more so - not even from the "step on me mommy" crowd or the "wow I love toxic relationships, they're so fucked up <3" crowd (hell I'm one of them), but from the people who genuinely agree with the story that "yes, this is cute".

I wouldn't care so much if this was just a non-canon ship. There are plenty of popular non-canon ships that make me angry because I think they have a terrible dynamic and I don't understand the appeal. I don't care. But this is not a ship, it's not just some dozens of fans findind two characters hot: this is a story. And this changes everything.

I believe that an official product, that is incidentally praised by nearly everyone, should have been more responsible with its messages. Not in a "fiction affects reality" way, but in a "this story is terribly written, I try to understand why I seem to be in the minority in thinking so, and the justifications are eerily reminiscent of real life abuse apologism" way. I'm not saying that NFCV fans will watch the show and think "oh boy! my eyes have been opened! maybe if I, a woman, raped a man into slavery, he'll love me too!"... but let's be real: unlike the boogeyman of incest, female-on-male abuse is still widely misunderstood. Rape that is not "man violently forces himself on a woman he doesn't know" is still widely misunderstood. The show had the chance to challenge those misconceptions, but instead, it only confirmed them. The fact that it happened mostly out of shoddy writing makes it even worse, because there is not even full authorial intent.

I can safely say that the overwhelming majority of people who draw porn of Tails are well aware that sexualizing real kids is wrong. This sort of moral cannot be influenced by porn, because it's too rooted in our consciousness (people who sexualize real life kids are born that way and it's a completely different topic). Those people have their own reasons for drawing that kind of porn. I don't want to know them, I don't want to see them, please keep it in your corner and tag your shit, but it's just tasteless fanart at worst and I don't care. I grew up in a much edgier era when genuine graphic torture porn was written for no reason other than to shock others, so I don't really bother to wonder why someone would write or draw something disgusting. As long as it's avoidable, it's fine. It's harder to avoid a popular official product that is always touted as an example of excellent writing and also happens to be the adaptation of a franchise I've grown to love, considered superior to said franchise to boot.

It doesn't help that there is proof of the writer in question being a prolific sex pest whose crimes eerily match its writing. So in his case, I do wonder why he wrote certain things.

Just as a note, I don't really talk about it here, but I used to be a fierce anti-Twilight back in the day, and it was for similar reasons: I was appalled at that series' sexism and misanthropy and abuse apologism and I thought it was a real issue, because I think widespread stories ought to be more careful with their themes than fanfics and fanart. Not even necessarily to "teach" a lesson (NFCV is for adults anyway, it's not meant to be educational), but... well, as respect for your audience, you know?

And as for the people who don't see any issue... again, I don't want to assume anything about their morals. Maybe for them it really is just an intriguing ship. But I would like to at least urge someone to think about what they're saying, because when you say "no, he wasn't raped, merely seduced, and anyway he deserved it for being stupid, and he got a good deal out of it so why did he have to ruin such a beautiful relationship?", now that is the thing that could affect real people, not shipping a 12 yo and a 15 yo cartoon hedgehogs.

tl;dr: official stories and ships/fan content have different impacts and I judge them differently. This also happened to be about a topic I very much care about.

He thinks he's super sneaky, and thank goodness Hob is as oblivious as he is, because if he catches wind of it, he'd become even more of a blushing mess, and would try to return Dream's clothes to him because he doesn't want to cause any misunderstandings. And that's the last thing Dream wants.

The staff would definitely start treating Hob differently. Not that they're treating him badly or anything, but they'll start treating him like he's a VIP.

And anyway, he's so sweet and nice and if anyone deserves to be treated like a VIP, it's him.

(IDK if I've mentioned this in the fic yet, but Endless Gym is a ✨️super fancy✨️ gym, and famous people actually go there to work out. The staff are used to treating actual VIPs, but they'll treat Hob like he's a tier above them, maybe just a step below the Endless siblings.)

Anyway, let's pretend that he's sick or smth and learns about what happened from Lucienne, who always keeps an eye out for potential bullying or sexual harassment cases.

I imagine that Dream would demand to watch the security footage (bc he's insane), so he'll see exactly what happened.

He'll see Hob just minding his own business, running on a treadmill, following the lesson plan even without supervision, just basically being a very good boy for Dream 😏, when this fucknugget man smiles smarmingly at him, hopping on the next treadmill and flirting with him.

Hob just looks confused, but Dream sees him just nod politely and return to his workout. Dream sees the man flirting harder, and Hob just not engaging with any of it, and he eventually leaves when the set time is done.

Dream is breathing fire when he sees the man move to follow Hob to the showers, but thankfully a couple of undercover guards (pretend it's a thing) walk up to the man and very politely tell him to stop it. The man is rude to them, but he doesn't push back and leaves when the guards keep their eye on him and loom menacingly near the showers.

Dream tells Lucienne to commend the two guards and give them a bonus, and focuses on recovering so he could return to work quicker.

When he gets back and sees fucknugget man working out (Hob isn't around because it's a day when he doesn't have a session with Dream), Dream walks up to him and says, "I heard about what happened the other day."

"Yeah," the man grumbles. He looks validated, because oh wow Dream Endless is talking to him. No doubt he'd be on his side. "I was just complimenting someone and some douchebags told me to quit it." He scoffs. "Man wasn't even worth it, to be honest. Just looking for someone to suck my cock, you know how it is, and he looked pathetic enough to want to do it."

Dream inhales, exhales, and smiles like he doesn't want to tear this man's throat out with his teeth.

He is going to ruin this man's life. He has already read through his file when he was still sick, and has contacted one of his private eye connections to investigate the man for anything that would get him in trouble. The bigger the dirt, the more Dream will pay.

"You should be careful," Dream says.

"Ha! Yeah. I'll corner him somewhere quieter next time. Do you think he'll come by later?"

Ok, so, basically, my railao getting married when they're 30 au. They definitely got married, and like i said, one stayed single for a reason, and one got no game. The latter is Lao, but we know that lmao. But here's the thing after they got married, everyone except their friends didn't know it was a bet they made, so now they have to act cutesy in front of other people. Which didn't change much, cause guess what? Raiden had always been sweet to him. And then, one day, Johnny as always can NOT keep his nose outta ithers business. And he asked if they're for sure not have any sorta feelings for e/o? And told Lao that he should have seen the way Rai looked at him. N Lao was like 'nah u think too much' but he thought about it anyway. After much encouragement from friends, I've decided to try and tackle this series! The little chibi models are cute. Lmao at little Estelle though, her wanting a fishing pole for a present is so cute. LOL when she thought the boy her dad was carrying was dead and said he looks dead😂😂 I mean, I gotta agree with Estelle that this is definitely not a present hahahaha! Estelle is such a funny child that the first thing she thinks of is this boy being an illegitimate child😂 Estelle's chibi model jumping on the bed indicating her hitting the boy for yelling when he's still recovering is so funny😂 That was quite a long introductory cinematic sequence. Aww there's a little boy on the bridge looking out saying the girl down there is cute! I wonder if there will be a love story considering she has a good feeling about something haha! Lmao at the little reporter girl Claire whose already sold on the love story between Joshua and Estelle. I wonder if it will happen as she says~ Wholesome pasta sounds great but how much is that newspaper Estelle needs to buy for her dad, do I have enough money?! Ah okay, it was just Josette and her sky bandit friends. Seagaro and them are okay hahaha. Kyle looks cool, but I wanted to see Schera's whipping in action😂 I hope Cassius is fine, it's scary to think that his airliner just up and disappeared. Well, I spent most of that Prologue chatting up everyone to see their lives haha!

On to Bose now! I'm glad to see how resilient Estelle is. It must have been shocking for her to hear her father is missing but I'm glad that to her it just means she'll find him, and as long as Joshua is beside her, she'll be fine. She might not understand the romantic feelings he has for her, but without each other, it definitely feels weird haha. It broke my heart to realise that Estelle's mother died protecting her when they destroyed the clock tower Estelle was at. I agree with Joshua that she can get her mother's strength and be the one to rescue her father now. I was thinking that Schera looked like a dancer! Good to know she was one before becoming a bracer. Even though Luke is bratty, it's kinda sweet how he told Estelle to hurry up and come back. I'm SO glad I got to see Armand and Ellie before we left Rolent. Nice to know that they'll be seeing the Queen's celebration together! LOL I was wondering why Yuni's dialogue was "Papa... I'm only seven years old", the man is trying to be like Rinon's mother and find her a husband already lmao, definitely jumping the gun here😂😂 I'm also very glad to see Frissa and Anya get to have a family meal together with the miner husband before leaving! They've been waiting for their husband/father to come home from the mine so I'm super happy for them! I knew the father would be the mine chief Gaton haha. I'm happy for Pat's family that everything seems to be going well. But I'm sad for Maggy, Luke's grandmother, she doesn't get to see her son Ashton since he's always at the checkpoint and Luke is always out🥲 I'm so happy to see that Radford has decided to believe in the man his daughter chose to marry, and Freemont seems to have even more respect towards Radford after getting to learn things from him, so I guess that will be another happy family! Bose is really nice and big! Lmao at the Laundry Pole weapon😂 Ingenious or pathetic? Definitely both hahaha! I didn't expect the Bose mayor, Maybelle to be so young! I definitely agree with Schera though, regardless of their circumstances, it's a fact that things haven't been working out well enough (in terms of the search for the missing airliner) that Maybelle has enlisted bracers. Saying you're doing your best isn't enough especially when you're blocking others who have the power to make a difference and assist just because of your own biases.

OMG, the girl at the fluffy sponge cake shop, Katrina, I was wondering what was going on with it since a guy used to be there apparently and Gantz (onlooker) has been eating it everyday to notice that the taste has improved, she has such a sad but sweet story. Her fiance was on the airliner that disappeared and she's protecting his shop waiting for him to come back, that's so sweet. She must have known next to nothing when she started because she seemed so confused but tried her best to always smile and now she's thriving! I'm happy for her, I hope we solve this airliner thing and everyone is safe. Even Mirano the merchant we've talked to since Rolent, her father was on the airliner too. Honestly, I have to agree with this Red-Haired Guy. If the airliner crashed then I would be worried about Cassius, but if it's a hijacking, he's definitely fine, he's probably just making sure he can save everyone imo. I really like Ravennue Village, very peaceful and nice with good fruit. I hope the people can come to an agreement though, Pesca's idea of using machines where they can in the orchard would make their lives easier but I can see why Gray wants things kept as is especially if he thinks the fruit quality has gone down. I just want it to be resolved so Lore can go to Bose and reunite with his family haha!

I wonder if the sky bandits are stealing cargo etc because their country or whatever is lacking in resources or something since there's been lots of burglaries. I was wondering why the Anterose manager seemed so troubled. Lmao at Olivier drinking a legendary wine worth 500,000 mira, yep how indeed is the manager going to face the owner after that lol. Definitely feels like a classic JRPG to get thrown into jail at least once hahhaha. I didn't think Maybelle was also the owner of Anterose! Although I did wonder if she or Mirano owned it hahaha. Definitely makes it much easier to let Olivier out then. And yesss I stole Olivier's gear and stuff before including his quartz so it's great to know that he comes back with it all as if nothing happened! 10/10 recommend being a thief😂 Praise to Anelace for informing Maybelle about them being thrown into jail. Overall, been really loving Trails! Really fun, love talking to NPCs, honestly the best thing about this game. Story is nothing special right now but I'd say the NPCs really make up for it because by interacting them, everything feels so much more alive, it really feels like you're going on a proper journey from being so smothered with love by everyone at home in Rolent, first time going to a city like Bose and meeting different people and realising how different things can be and then helping out in an international incident to develop renown. A very chill journey to becoming a senior bracer and I've enjoyed it the whole time! The only thing that sucks but is apparent through many old games is the amount of backtracking they make you do for the smallest things but it's fine I guess. Turbo mode is definitely a saviour because I don't think I can live without it lol. I also don't think I can live without the NPCs. Reading my post again, 90% of it is just about NPCs LOL. Where is the story? Irrelevant because NPCs are the story for this game and I'm all for it.

I think I've got this!! I believe I will be right!! The more I try to analyze things It all fits so nicely together. I'm so nervous, why am I so tense, I'm going to be so embarrassed and ashamed if I get all this wrong(and I know I shouldn't be but I can't help it;; I MAKE art out of this and it leaves a mark, I put my heart into that stuff) but I just get so convinced whenever I listen to the songs and the stuff that's been shown. It's been fun piecing the puzzle pieces together and determining just what the characters may be feeling. I don't know what they're thinking about, but I think I can feel what feelings they have. That's been really fun because there is a lot of room for thought when it comes to this piece.

Well, I think I'd at least get the hikaai ship even if I don't like the ending because Mephisto and Fatal and maybe even some parts of Idol and Burning have to do with them. Well, that was a tiny arc. It succeeded in making me hungry.

This was just the Kana arc but in reverse (Kosaku is jealous instead of Angela). I can feel Takahashi running out of ideas for the characters.

Kosaku threatens to quit boxing for the 9 millionth time. I don't buy that he's serious about becoming a chef. These kinds of flaky people are the worst irl.

I appreciate the different fighting styles we've seen through the course of this series. In this one we see one of the lazier options that boxers can use to earn points. I thought it was funny that the nuns referred to it as "hugging" because that's what I was thinking it looked like lol.

Okay, I feel really silly that I didn't pick up on the fact that Ryusei was Kosaku's next opponent.

I respect Angela's immediate disgust for the dudes at the host bar. I have heard stories of how they can be pretty extortionate and phony. I'd be scared to go to one. Kosaku's reaction to finding out she went to one was funny. That is pretty wild out of context lol

Ch. 34

I liked the use of overlapping speech bubbles to show Kosaku ignoring his coach, that was clever.

They're implying that the guests at host clubs are often female employees from similar industries. IDK if that's true, but that's pretty interesting...

This chapter made me google whether or not male customers are allowed at host clubs and I got mixed results. I guess it depends on the club!

I don't really have any strong opinions on fenro (or fendra tbh). They're both alright ships but you write fenro really well. I think my favourite fenro fic of yours I've read so far is "A Definitely Real Man."

I try to give him the character development he deserved in the rest of the third season after the amazing way 'Astro B.O.Y.D.' ended, while keeping him in-character at the same time. It's a HARD balance to get right, but I've been told I do it really well.

I recently watched the first season Jujutsu Kaisen. Since it's become a big hit, I was interested in checking it out, plus my boyfriend and another friend like it.

Overall, I liked it. Can't say that anything about it particularly wowed me, but it was still a fun time. Since I've watched plenty of Naruto, Bleach, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, and other shonen series, the many shonen tropes and character archetypes in JJK were more noticeable to me than they would be for someone else who hasn't watched as much anime. But again, I don't mind seeing familiar tropes as long as they're done well.

My main major complaint about the series, at least for season 1, is that I couldn't stand how Todo's character was handled, especially how he was introduced. Maybe I'm missing something, but my interpretation is that he shows up, beats the shit out of Megumi for literally no good reason other than he doesn't like his taste in women?! I was like "aren't you guys on the same side? Why are you trying to kill a fellow student that you don't even know?" And then he's suddenly played up as a comical character who's infatuated with this cute female idol...that's fine and all, but it's a little hard for me to find a character funny/charming when they just attempted to kill one of the main protagonists for a petty reason. And then he does the same thing again to Yuji later - beats the shit out of him for no good reason (I know the principal ordered the Kyoto students to kill Yuji, but the way Todo reacted didn't seem like he wanted to follow those orders?) Then he has some weird delusion of him and Yuji being friends in school...and now he's suddenly best friends with Yuji?! And again, the show was making it seem like this was supposed to be funny, but I was just like "you were literally bashing his head against a tree a minute ago and now I'm supposed to like you because you've decided you're his best friend because he happened to give an answer about women you approve of? How is this a likable relationship?" And then in the very last episode, it was Todo who recommended Megumi to the principal and I was like "didn't you want to kill him when you first met him? Now you like him? Because you were fighting the same cursed being together for ten minutes?" I dunno, everything about Todo just rubbed me the wrong way and I just could not relate to him at all, which was frustrating. But at least he wasn't in that many episodes. I got excited when one of the episodes started with a bit of Todo's backstory and I was like "oh, maybe I can finally learn more about this guy and why he beats people up for not liking their taste in women." But no, the flashback hardly showed anything. A later season, hopefully.

But besides having issues with Todo, I liked most of the other characters. Megumi is my favorite of the main characters. I warmed up to Yuji and Nobara in time, but I liked Megumi right away, as soon as I saw he was willing to help Yuji during their first encounter. I liked him even more in the last few episodes of the season where we get to see some of his backstory. Yuji and Nobara are good foils to Megumi, since he's often the straight man to their immature antics.

Of the side characters, I like Panda and Miwa. I was curious about Panda as soon as I saw him, so I'm glad I got to learn his origins so soon. And Miwa is one of the few characters that made me laugh a couple times. She just seems more wholesome than many of the other characters. Nanamin is pretty cool too.

The animation in JJK was enjoyable to watch, as well as the interesting designs of all the curse creatures. Though I have to say the world-building seemed a bit weak to me, but I know that's something that could develop later. Like, Jujutsu High School doesn't seem much like a high school...I don't see any kind of organized training or classes, and there's only, like, ten students between Tokyo and Kyoto. We also didn't see much of the politics behind the jujutsu sorcerers other than from the perspective of the schools. There must be some larger network of authority figures who govern everything? But again, I'm hoping in time we'll learn more about that. The humor in the series was hit or miss for me too, but I also have high standards for humor in general, probably more than most people, lol. I'm not typically a fan of humor that involves the characters breaking out into hyperbolic shouting along with the animation style changing dramatically to indicate we're in "joke mode" now, especially in a series that's otherwise dramatic like this one. But I did get a few chuckles here and there.

The action scenes were really cool, especially the domain expansions. But I did find the power level of the characters a bit inconsistent. Like, in the first episode Megumi had to rest and get healing after that battle, but then he gets punched through buildings by Todo and gets practically killed fighting the bridge curse...but seems totally fine soon after. And then there's Yuji displaying extraordinary feats of physical endurance and shrugging off life-threatening injuries...I know he said at the beginning that he's more physically able than most people, but still. But I'll just say it comes from their curse powers giving them extra damage reduction, lol. It's the case in most shonen series that injuries that would kill a person in real life only cause minor injures to shonen protagonists 😅

My favorite bunch of episodes were the ones with Junpei. I liked his backstory and how he developed a relationship with Mahito. The series kinda hinted that he's not actually dead but I'm not sure. I also enjoyed the last few episodes of the season where it was just Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara going on a mission. If all or most of the series was just them going on missions to get rid of curses and developing their friendship, I'd be cool with that, lol.

To summarize, while I didn't love JJK and had some issues with it, I definitely enjoyed it enough to want to keep watching. I plan to start season 2 soon!
