Prompt 21 - The Tunnel to Hogsmeade

“This statue is so weird,” Sirius said again, like he did every time they walked past it. “Like, seriously, why is it even here? It’s nowhere near anything, and it’s just there!” He drove him mad every time he saw it. 

“Sirius, it’s just a statue,” James tried to tell him as Sirius got right in the one-eyed witch's face. 

“Yeah, Sirius, can we not just go to lunch? I’m starving,” Peter complained. Sirius ignored them both. 

“Why are you here?” He asked her, narrowing his eyes. 

“What you thinking?” Remus asked, stooping down to Sirius’s level and looking at the witch. 

“She’s hiding something,” Sirius began circling her, scrutinising every inch of the carved stone. He ran a nail over a grove that ran the entire way around the hump on the witch’s back. “Why would there be a grove?” He mused aloud as he began tapping the statue.

He wracked his brains for a spell to use. 

“Alohomora,” He muttered. Nothing happened. Sirius closed his eyes, he knew there was a spell for this, he just couldn’t quite remember what it was. 

“Dissendium,” Remus said, tapping the witch with his own wand. The sound of grating stone echoed off the empty corridor walls, and a gust of air ruffled their hair as Sirius and Remus peered into the narrow passageway. Sirius looked at Remus in awe. 

“Godric’s sword, you were right!” James exclaimed as he pushed his way between Sirius and Remus. Sirius and Remus looked over James’s head and silently agreed with each other. Together, they pushed his back, and he toppled in. “WHAT THE???!!!! Hey! There’s a tunnel down here!” 

Sirius dropped in next, landing on the dirt floor. “Wow,” He said as he lit the tip of his wand and looked around. Remus followed him and Peter came after. 

Together, they set off down the tunnel. It seemed endless. They turned one final corner and came face to face with a set of steps. Sirius didn’t hesitate for a second and hurtled up them. He stopped at the trapdoor above his head and, with a deep breath, pushed it open and pulled himself up. 

“Remus, you are going to want to get up here,” He called down through the hole. 

He watched as Remus’s head popped up through the trap and took in the look of wonder around him. That statue that had been infuriating Sirius for years had led them to the one place that would impress Remus the most. Merlin, Sirius loved Hogwarts. He reached out and hauled Remus up into the storage room of Honeydukes Sweet Shop. Remus stumbled into Sirius’s side. Sirius felt an unexpected tingle in his stomach. Something he’d never felt before except for the odd girl he’d fancied. Well, this was new. He pushed it to the back of his mind while he helped James and Peter up and explored the many boxes of sweets knowing that they'd be back many, many, many more times.

the When the Levee Breaks to Swan Song to Jack in the Box to Unity throughline. i'm gonna puke. the fucking cycle of patriarchal abuse at a cosmic scale but also on a granular level. we're always going back to mary bleeding and burning on the ceiling. we're always going back to sam breaking down, giving himself up to lucifer, and throwing himself into the depths of hell. familial violence is an ouroborous that both births and consumes itself. and in the end, sam, the moral compass - the one always branded crazy and selfish and disobedient for daring to question his family's reality - being the one to break it all.

I'm still thinking about that scene in Victoriocity S3E7 where Fleet runs back towards the Beast so as to lure it into the path of the train...

Clara's exclamation of 'Teamwork, Fleet!' after Fleet says he's got a plan reflects her conviction that any plan that Fleet has will be a shared plan, something they do together.

This conviction is a kind of trust, and that trust is part of the reason Clara takes a moment to realise Fleet has headed back towards the Beast. She trusts that he's following behind her. She keeps talking to him, her words full of optimism.

When she realises Fleet isn't there, she immediately realises what that must mean he's done, and her voice sounds more small and scared than I think we've ever heard it before.

Fleet's attempt at self-sacrifice is a kind of betrayal of Clara's trust, but when he echoes her celebration of their teamwork in a more somber tone, I think it suggests that he understands the weight of that betrayal.

If Fleet's plan is that Clara won't realise he's gone until it's already too late, then he thinks "Teamwork, Clara" will be the last words he'll ever speak to her. In what he imagines will be their final conversation, Fleet affirms Clara's understanding of them as a team who work well together, even as he is making a choice that rejects the possibility of their teamwork in this scenario. It's a recognition of what their dynamic has meant. It's a goodbye and an apology, even if Clara doesn't understand it as such at first.

I don't think Fleet sounds scared as he initially faces down the train. When he shouts "Yeah, this way, you stupid machine! Come on then!", he sounds defiant and grimly determined.

In fact, I don't think he sounds afraid until Clara appears, until she might be at risk of being in the path of the Beast or the train as well. It's when he shouts "Clara, stay back for God's sake!" and "Please, get back!" that there's real fear and desperation in his voice. He can confront the idea of giving his own life, but not the idea that doing so might put Clara in danger.

Another thing about these lines is that the move from 'stay back' to 'get back' suggests that Clara didn't obey his first instruction but got closer to him (and therefore to the path of the Beast and the train) between those two lines.

Then Fleet gives what might be another attempt at his last words: "I'm sorry! I'm sorry."  A repeated apology before an attempted self-sacrifice is an implicit acknowledgement of how much losing him would hurt Clara. He regrets causing her pain.

Even so, he's accepted that he is about to die and that it'd be worth it to destroy the Beast. But Clara very much hasn't accepted either those things. She's still trying to yell over the noise of the train; she's pulling off her ring to throw at him.

I think it's a good illustration of how Clara's optimism is a kind of strength. She always believes that they can "make a new plan" and that it'll be one in which no one has to die. I think Archibald Fleet needs someone like that, someone who'll tell him to drop to the ground when his death advances from both sides, someone who - even in a dark tunnel with an murderous metal monster and a speeding train - won't stop shouting that there's hope.

What’s your opinion on the people that ship marceline and simon together?

Literally never thought about it until you asked. The opinions I have on ships aren't the opinions I have on the people that like them anyway. Did you ask because I'm an adoptee? I'm confused as to why my opinion would matter lol.

I think they probably self insert into that dynamic for comfort. A soft spoken older man who is endlessly supportive and gentle taking you away from your neglectful, brash father is alluring when you've never known a kind male figure of authority/have a complicated relationship w/ father figures. Idk, that's just my guess. Our brains are weird, shit's nuanced abt why we like things.
