it makes me want to bite when I remember that Buck clocked it in s5 when he was talking to Eddie about their screwed up families, he clocked that it was both of them - Ramon AND Helena - and Eddie immediately said Well Actually No Just My Dad. and then it wasn't just his dad. his mom is telling him that they'll replace anything Chris needs in a way that he won't miss Eddie or his home. and Eddie gets maybe 30 seconds to talk to Chris on his birthday because Helena needs to get back to the birthday party she organised and maybe he'll get a photo of the lake this week and maybe he'll get one more scrap of information about his own child.

"Angry guy. Hey, you'd be angry, too, if you lost your kid." and when that nightmare becomes a reality, Eddie is far from angry. he should be. fucking hell, he should yell and curse at his mom. he should scream at a universe that will not scream back. that seems to have it out for him. one mistake that wasn't even a conscious mistake but a call for help. a plea for a past that never was. and he lost his child. and his parents don't even give a fuck about him. but he's not angry. he's heartbroken but hides it. he blames himself. but he's not angry.
except at himself.

I can’t get over the two truth and a lie scene from yesterday, it doomed Marisol before Kim even stepped foot onto screen.
Marisol has never tried a s’more which was a blatant show of her disconnect to Shannon, who Eddie is trying to find in her.
Eddie and Chris made s’mores together last season in order to keep a tradition they had with Shannon alive, because the Diaz boys are nothing if not consistent in their unresolved grief over her.
Each time they think they’ve found a way to move on, they discover a new issue in how they respond to situations that has been caused by the trauma of losing Shannon.
Anyways, back to Marisol never having had s’mores-marking her as decidedly not Shannon-to then have Eddie come across Kim, a woman who immediately brings back Shannon and her memory to him…he’s going to have to confront some pretty painful truths and it’s building up to be explosive.
No one will be able to measure up to Shannon…not even Shannon could.
Eddie has idealized her beyond reality, as if he’s trying to explain away the reason he hasn’t truly connected with anyone romantically.
If he can chalk it up to Shannon being the only one for him, then he won’t feel like he’s broken.

Buck: It can’t get any worse though, right?
Eddie: Sure it can - just give me a minute.

Hen: So, do you have an idea of how you're gonna ask out Buck?
Eddie: Oh, yeah, I have a great plan.
Hen: Really?
Eddie: Well, it's a good plan.
Hen:...
Eddie: It's a plan.

I don't think the confession is about Shannon asking for a divorce because that's something we've already known since season 3, it has to be something more unexpected and serious, something we don't know about yet, and I think it will have to do with his difficulty relating to women in the long term and a very big clue is when in season 6 he confesses that she feels like he has to performing.

I agree. It’s gotta be something we don’t know and haven’t seen yet.

The way that Eddie is still going to need Buck to lean on after Christopher leaves and the way he won’t is gonna wreck me. That isolation is going to be of his own making and I wasn’t totally scared for him but now I kind of am.

there's something about Chris being the first unconditional love in Eddie's life. something about Chris saying he missed Eddie always when Eddie comes back home and is stewing in guilt about not being there and everyone is blaming him for every choice. but Chris tells him he misses Eddie always as a gift, as an easy measure of love, as a fact that Eddie is Eddie - his dad, someone he loves - and of course he would miss him. there's something about Eddie wanting to be brave enough to want a new life because of this, because Chris loves him and Eddie will ALWAYS fight for Chris to have a better chance at life, at joy and freedom, than anyone offered him.

Rewatching the couch scene in 8x01 because I was so distracted by hiding my face/sympathetic embarrassment for Eddie that I couldn't even properly focus on our first bucktommy moment of the season.

So i was just contemplating what might have been different if Buck wasn't a firefighter.
It occured to me that there's the possibility that Chris would still have gone to the pier that day with whoever was babysitting him. And it would have been with someone who wouldn't fight for Eddie's son as much as Buck did. And the end of that day may have had a very different outcome.
