"Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways."
Tumblr media
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for evaluating and treating pathologies seen as originating from conflicts in the psyche, through dialogue between patient and psychoanalyst, and the distinctive theory of mind and human agency derived from it.
Founder of Psychoanalysis: Sigmund Freud is best known as the father of psychoanalysis, a method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. His work laid the foundation for modern psychotherapy and has profoundly impacted psychology, psychiatry, and even popular culture.
Theory of the Unconscious Mind: Freud developed the theory that human behaviour is largely influenced by the unconscious mind, which includes desires, memories, and experiences that are not accessible to the conscious mind. He introduced the concepts of the id, ego, and superego as the three parts of the human psyche.
Dream Interpretation: Freud believed that dreams are a form of wish fulfilment and provide insights into the unconscious mind. His book "The Interpretation of Dreams" (1899) is one of his most famous works, where he detailed his theories on dream analysis and the significance of dreams in understanding unconscious desires.
Developmental Stages: Freud proposed that human development occurs in a series of stages, each centred on erogenous zones. These stages are oral, anal, phallic, latent, and genital. He believed that experiences during these stages profoundly impact an individual’s personality and behaviour in adulthood.
Controversial Theories: Many of Freud's theories, such as the Oedipus complex, have been highly controversial and have sparked extensive debate and criticism. Despite the controversies, Freud's work has remained influential, and his ideas continue to be studied and discussed in psychology, literature, and cultural studies.

Get to know you better game! answer the questions and tag 9 people you want to get to know better
thanks to @crepesuzette2023 for tagging me!! i am on tumblr, which means i am both self-obsessed and nosy, so this is ideal.
Last song I listened to:
from my j/p playlist, which i have been wearing into the absolute ground recently, which is either representative of the fact that i'm Going Through Something or that i've mostly been listening to new music lately
Currently watching: i'm more of a movie person than a tv person, but i'm very slowly picking my way through mad men. also i'm like 30 minutes into the iron claw because i keep getting interrupted lol
Currently obsessed with: everything! i have no casual interests! but rn the big one is the book i'm working on, which is a culmination of most of my other big interests (the beatles, fandom studies, religion, the 60s, the 80s, toxic yuri, etc.). i've also become obsessed with sigrid nunez; i blew through the friend and what you are going through recently and am trying not to gnaw off my arm waiting for my library hold of the vulnerables to come in.
i'm gonna tag @elena-ferrante @boshemians @tabiheel @mylonghairedladyy @oedipuscomplexes @dykes4divock @oldlovecassette @revollver @whitealbum if you feel like it <3

"Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility."
Born: 6 May 1856, Příbor, Czechia
Died: 23 September 1939 (age 83 years), Hampstead, London
Cocaine Use in His Research: In the early stages of his career, Freud experimented with the therapeutic uses of cocaine. He initially believed it could be a cure for various ailments, including depression and anxiety. However, he later recognized its harmful effects and distanced himself from its promotion.
Freud's Jaw Prosthesis: Freud suffered from oral cancer in the later years of his life, leading to the removal of his jaw in 1923. He wore a prosthesis to cover the surgical site, which impacted his ability to speak clearly. Despite his health challenges, Freud continued his work and writing until his death in 1939.
Fears of Traveling: Freud had a fear of traveling and rarely left Vienna. This fear, known as agoraphobia, limited his international travel and kept him largely within the confines of his home city.
Freud's Daughter Anna Freud's Contribution: Anna Freud, Sigmund Freud's youngest daughter, became a prominent psychoanalyst in her own right. She made significant contributions to child psychoanalysis and continued her father's work. Anna Freud founded the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic in London.
Freud's Interest in Mythology: Freud had a deep interest in mythology and often used mythological references in his interpretations. He frequently drew parallels between psychoanalytic concepts and myths, exploring the symbolic meanings embedded in ancient stories and folklore. This interest is evident in his work, such as "Totem and Taboo" and "Moses and Monotheism."

Oedipus
The son of Laius and Jocasta, King and Queen of Thebes, Oedipus is the unfortunate main protagonist of “one of the best-known of all legends” in Ancient Greek – or any other – mythology. Left, while still a baby, to die in the mountains by his father – who had been warned that his son would kill him and marry his wife – Oedipus was eventually adopted by the childless King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth. After accidentally finding about the gruesome prophecy himself, in fear and disgust the young Oedipus fled Corinth and – guided by cruel destiny – wound up crossing paths with his real father at a narrow crossroad; after a brief argument with Laius’ charioteer over who had the right to go first, Oedipus killed both of them. Wandering aimlessly, he subsequently reached the city of Thebes where he encountered the monstrous gate-guarding Sphinx; after he answered her riddle, the Sphinx went mad and hurled herself to her death. As a reward for rescuing the city from this vicious beast, Oedipus was afterward offered the vacant throne of Thebes and the hand in marriage of the ex-king’s widow, his very own mother. Jocasta bore her son four children – Polynices, Eteocles, Antigone, and Ismene – before a belated investigation into the death of Laius led Oedipus into discovering the dreadful truth of his marriage. Upon realization, Jocasta hanged herself, and Oedipus gouged his eyes with two pins snatched from her regal dress.
