trying to figure out cadash’s implied role in the carta. cadash should be a serious name, it was once a warrior caste house and is described as a “ruthless crime family”, suggesting a certain level of power currently. but inquisitor cadash specifically is talking about being on the... front lines, if you will? doing the grunt work. even the peaceful option for their backstory to josie is that they were doing simple, boring smuggling work, and the other replies suggest they were in the middle of the violence. they’re not one of the bosses at the table, they have bosses coming after them because they think cadash made off with the cargo (suggesting cadash running for cash and/or a way out at the first opportunity is believable)

some more thoughts about the bad reality au

zuko finds out he has weird spirit bullshit going on because it turns out you can't a.) exist in a reality where you don't exist and b.) carry pieces of your friends inside of you without getting a little weird.

he can channel them to a degree, but only when their physical bodies are nearby. katara becomes her own early warning system.

(sokka will eventually also become his own early warning system.)

yon rha never retired and stayed the leader of the southern raiders- therefore it is coincidence that katara entered this world as his daughter. she learned firebending at his knee, and planned to join the raiders herself when she reached military age.

(she hates the full moon. it means sleepless nights for her, roused by awful dreams that she can never remember when she wakes.)

zuko voice: why is it that convincing katara to trust me is never easy? I didn't even do anything this time!

suki: yeah why did the spirits hinge this whole thing on people trusting you?

zuko: I don't know! it sounds like such an obviously bad idea!

sokka gets to be a bender this time- specifically, he's an earthbender. even more specifically, he's an agent of the dai li, which long feng still commands... in the name of phoenix king ozai.

he also gets sent to kill them!

toph is at the north pole. she's stifled more there than she ever was in the beifong manor. her parents won't even let her have the most basic of bending instruction.

she's a waterbender. she learned to 'see' by sensing the water around her. she taught herself everything she knows.

His protection of Wei Wuxian could similarly play out as him dropping out of his studies before being pulled back by his family, and his growth across the 13 yrs supported by completing his degree but shifting his dissertation focus or concentration to a less theoretical and more highly applied vein of the same field. hrrr I Saw the TV Glow is still rolling around in the back of my mind. it's hitting me somewhat belatedly that what seemingly starts as mainly an identity story turns out - toward the final act - to also be a love story. two queer kids finding each other (again). the bond they forge (have always had). the feelings that start to grow (were always there) despite the lie they're living. one trying to save the other, and failing. the frail hope at the end that maybe what they had mattered after all, even if they never see each other again. maybe because they knew each other, someday things will be better.

idk. so much of the story feels so lonely. they're awkward with each other at first and they don't really "get" each other and they're absent from each other's lives for long periods and they don't have anyone else. but it's all a lie - they were best friends, they knew each other better than anyone, they are who they are because they knew each other, they were not alone. no matter how bleak the setting is, this fake world can't obscure the truth. they'll never forget each other. it will always have happened, it will always have mattered.

it's so hard to put into words but Owen/Isabel and Maddy/Tara make me so crazy, the way everything in the world works to drive them apart and yet not even losing their memories can destroy the connection between them. and it's not enough to prevent the world from tearing them apart but maybe it's enough to save their lives
