Lament

“Angel?” Captain Barnacles called. He could hear her on the other side of the bushes. It wasn’t like her to just run away, though. Something must have been wrong. “Angel?!”

He pushed the bushes aside and was shocked by what he saw: Angel had grabbed a long, thick tree branch and was hitting herself with it! She whacked her arms over and over again.

“Angel! What are you doing?! Don’t do that!” The polar bear took the branch off of her and tossed it as far as he could without fear of hurting any creatures. “You could hurt yourself!”

“That was the whole point!” the girl countered, beginning to cry.

The Captain was alarmed. Angel got upset very easily, but she rarely cried. He knelt down beside her. “Angel. Why are you crying?”

Angel let out a sob. “Because I keep screwing up!”

“Angel-”

“It’s my fault we’re stuck here! And I just keep making things worse! You could have gotten back to the Octopod ages ago if it weren’t for me, but we’ve been stuck here for three days! Your big day is completely ruined! And it’s all my fault! I’m sorry!”

“Everyone makes mistakes, Angel”, Barnacles pointed out gently.

“NOT AS MUCH AS I DO!” she exploded. “All I do is screw up! I just can’t do anything right! Here!” She slipped her Octo-watch off her wrist and threw it not at him, but towards him. “I don’t want this anymore! I’m never going to be good enough!”

Captain Barnacles knew that Angel struggled with self-esteem. He knew every Octonaut and Octo-Agent had their areas to work on and this was Angel’s main one. Still, it was hard to listen to the rant that followed. She bawled her eyes out, describing herself as completely useless and the worst thing ever. At first, he said nothing. He just allowed her to lament. Maybe all of this just needed to come out.

Eventually, when she was crying too hard to keep going, he decided to intervene.

“Angel. Take a deep breath.”

The thirteen-year-old drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Then she did it again and again.

She sniffled and wiped away a tear. “I’m sorry. You should have told me to shut up.”

“No”, he told her gently. “Angel, everyone feels the way you’re feeling sometimes. Everyone feels like they’re not good enough, but it’s not true. Any of it.”

“Yes it is!”

“You’re so hard on yourself. You have done so much more than you give yourself credit for… Do you remember when you and I first met?”

Despite herself, Angel had to smile a little. “I wish I didn’t.”

“You were so scared of me, but look at you now.” He smiled at her. “And you saved the life of a little penguin. You’ve helped me in the Caves of Sac Actun and helped save creatures in the Ring of Fire. You’re kind, you’re funny and you brighten up every day on the Octopod. And I'm very proud of you.”

Angel let out another sniffle. “Really?”

“Of course.” Seeing as she wasn’t convinced, he held out his arms. “Come here.”

The girl collapsed into his hug, resting her head on his chest as she sobbed. Captain Barnacles stroked her hair and talked to her gently.

When her sobs slowed, the Captain let her go. “Come on.” He stood up and pulled her up to her feet as well. “We’d better keep moving.”

Angel let out another sniff and shook her head. “Go on without me. You don’t need me getting in your way. You should just get back to the Octopod.”

“I’m not going anywhere without you”, the polar bear countered. “Oh! One more thing.” He picked up her Octo-watch. “You’re going to need this.”

Still not believing she deserved it, Angel put the Octo-watch back on her wrist. Then the Captain took her hand again.

“Junior Octo-Agent Angel. Let’s do this!”

YEAH I WATCH OCTONAUTS.

My personal takes on the main trio because I used to and still am obsessed with this goofy show because it's good and it's right next to Wild Kratts on biggest influences.

As for designs

Barnacles, I feel, is the closest to canon. Also because I feel like he takes good care of the uniform and just defaults to that as his primary fashion style.

Kwazzi is far more open and loose. Gave him piercings and jewelry because he's a pirate, torn ear and fluff. The black bits on his legs and ears are to tie him to Calico Jack (working on that weirdo atm)

IT'S MY PARTY AND I CHOOSE AMERICAN DUB HISPANIC PESO. Always resonated with him and loved him, so I gave him a warmer color scheme and a knee brace since I assume he probably has bad penguin knees. He's the one I took most pride and joy in here.

Ahem, so I have decided that in preparation for the possibility that I do commissions as part of a future job that I am going to practice doing that but for free. Professor Inkling and Tunip

This completes the core Octonauts team!

I'm sorry if it doesn't look as good as my previous ones, I did rush it a bit, as well as with the added lack of skills especially when drawing non-mammalian characters.

I based Professor Inkling's body to Octodad while I based Tunip's body to a baby seal. I also tested out some shadings.

After this, I want to experiment with my art style such as adding some shadings like with this one as well as adding more fluff to the mammalian characters. I also wanna try learning more dynamic body types since my art style is very limited.

Orson and Ursa are here now

Okay so I like to headcanon that Orson and Ursa are Canadian and fellow Canadian children who have experience winter know that you get bundled up like that one kid in a Christmas movie by your parents (I have a coat it’s bright blue and when zipped up I turn into blueberry so yeah) also there’s two kinds of winter outfits all black or bright colours (traffic cone) I decided to put them in a somewhat bright winter outfit also they do have Octo watches but keep them under their sleeves also with the stitching and patches I like to think that sometimes their play fighting can get out of hand which resulted in ripped clothes (luckily the winter coats and ski pants are thick so there was no blood spilled) but by accident they did scratch each other’s faces which is why bandages on their faces also ski pants have so many pockets so many pockets are here (fun fact thing idk Bianca and Barnacles were from Russia specifically Siberia originally but something happened were them and their mom moved to Canada, Nunavut Bianca stayed in Nunavut while Barnacles joined the Octonauts) also Orson has more straight fur while Ursa’s is a bit more curly which is why with the fluff on their faces is a bit different from each other I have rambled enough for now but their will be more ramblings of mine but for now enjoy and goodbye.

Headcanon for the Castaway Octonauts AU:

The junior octo agents (at least try) to bring back the octonauts and find Barnacles at some point.

For example, it just fits Koshi to be determined to keep "The Case of the Beached Barnacles" in her free time,

As well as for Ursa and Orsom to be too determined to not give up on their uncle who survived the catastrophe of their first 'Polar Bear Track' (I forgot what its called-) with them.

As Periwinkle got older, he could see how much his uncle was hurt by everything, and despite not knowing much about the team, could still see how much

Even Pinto who loved and respected the Octonauts team would be in disbeleif that they would give up (Even if they did try their best and kept the search up for all those months.) And would try to pry the details out of a reluctant Peso.

Maybe they'd pull a "Parent Trap, and try to bring the octonauts/octo agents in the same place to try to sort things out, or one or more to leave by themselves to try and find him.

(Whether or not it actually works can create some major fluff or angst)

IDK tho, I feel like the meme with the guy and the conspiracy board-

The Case of the Beached Barnacles- omg I am deceased. That’s brilliant!

Honestly I had a similar thought of how the Junior OctoAgents responded to the team splitting up.

Maybe I can have them like speaking in secret 🤫 with one another to have each other keep tabs on the crew.

Koshi would definitely have a whole notebook about the details of the day the captain disappeared. Dashi would’ve of probably vented to her sister after some convincing.

Periwinkle definitely would feel awful for his uncle Shellington. I feel like he’d ask about why they split up and Shellington would explain how things just got too hard for them. And Peri would absolutely work with the other agents to try and continue the search, even if the team is too distraught.

I do have a bit of how Orson and Ursa (the captain’s niece and nephew) as well as their mother Bianca reacted to hearing that Barnacles disappeared. The cubs were devastated to hear about it but refuse to believe that he could just vanish like that. With them being polar scouts, they’d have contact with Tracker so they would be able to get information on the rest of the team and the agents. Bianca was also devastated by her brother’s disappearance, thought she held strong for her cubs. Though she wasn’t certain if Barnacles was alive or not, she knew Barnacles wouldn’t want her to give up (especially since she’s a mom with two young cubs).

Note: I also have more on Natquik Peso and Tracker. With those three being close with Barnacle’s family through their relationships with the captain, I imagine they keep tabs on Bianca and the cubs. Tracker would keep giving any updates he can get. Natquik, with some help from Peso, always send care packages and gifts to Bianca and the cubs as a way to keep an eye on them for Barnacles.

Now Pinto, OOOOOH Pinto wouldn’t take the news lying down. I’m sure at some point Peso explained what happened (although maybe not in a lot of detail) and tries to get Pinto to understand the situation. However, knowing Pinto, he’d be just like Kwazii and refuse to give up. So while he investigates in his own way, he also would encourage Peso to not give up as well and to reach out as often as he can to the others.

Other OctoAgents do play a role in continuing the search in little ways. Paani and Min especially. Whether it be encouraging the Octonauts to reconcile and get back together, or trying to support them in their time grief and anguish.

Overall your headcanon was amazing to think about.

Halibeet & Codish

Headcanon:

Halibeet is a rather shy individual, he tends to stay out of most vegimal “missions” and likes to be more on the sidelines than anyone else. As you might be able to tell Halibeet has become somewhat of an assistant for Peso and is pretty helpful when there’s a patient in need. He is working on his bravery tho. He and Codish have a more twin based relationship but weren’t born from the same egg like Tominnow or Pikato, and just like the twins these two are very Yin and Yang.

Codish is lively, she always has an eye for some kind of trouble that somehow always ends up being kind of useful. Tunip tends to get on her case about being so reckless but the pair of them usually get along pretty well despite that. It’s a very Kwazii and Captain Barnacles type of situation which is rather ironic if you think about it.

Nonetheless Codish has more of an adventurous personality, but every now and then she’ll reign it in if she realizes the dangers of the situation. It also saves Tunip and Halibeet from having heart attacks every five minutes. XD

(I forgot to add this one! I headcanon that all vegimals have those neck fluffs at birth but when the females mature they loose them. That’s why Tominnow has them but Codish doesn’t. This has nothing to do with my ADHD at all . . . stop looking at me like that)
