Travis: Chetney is a shallower character who should probably be dead by now, which is obviously why I wrote a massive timeline lore document mid-campaign; here is the list of significant character creation questions I have been continuously pondering

Being in the twewy fandom while knowing nothing about Kingdom Hearts is such a bizarre experience because no one you follow is ever just a casual kh fan. They're all in the fuckin trenches crawling out every two weeks to string together some of the most incomprehensible posts to ever grace mankind's dashboard like wtf is a Baldr. Stairs? There's some bald old man named Xanax or whatever the fuck and maybe he's kissable? Every now and again someone will make a post with a really heavy emotional tone like "Omg when Glup Shitto went darkheart and Scrimbly Jim had to nort him 😭😭" and then the image below it looks like it came from a gatchalife youtube sketch. I'm glad you're all having fun I just desperately wish I understood what you're talking about like even a little bit.

Ah yes my favorite musical epic , or as I like to call it "the musical that no matter how perfectly you know the songs, each time you listen you'll find something new to cry about"

🐙 Daily Cephalopod Fact: 🐙
Dumbo Octopus: The name "dumbo" originates from their resemblance to the title character of Disney's 1941 film Dumbo, having two prominent ear-like fins which extend from the mantle above each eye. Dumbo octopuses are the deepest living octopuses known, with some specimens captured or observed at hadal depths (20,000 to 36,000 ft) below sea level.

New Deep Ocean Virus Discovered
Tumblr media
Life on Earth can be found even in the harshest of environments.  But wherever there is life, you can find regulators of that life- and by that, I mean viruses.  A group of researchers at the Ocean University of China have isolated a new virus from sediment collected from the Mariana Trench, some 8,900 meters below sea level.  This is the deepest discovered virus ever.
The virus in question is a bacteriophage- one that infects and replicates inside bacteria.  Bacteriophages are thought to be the most abundant life forms on the planet (that is, if you even consider them to be alive.  But that’s for a whole other post).  This bacteriophage infects bacteria in the phylum Halomonas, which can be found in deep sea sediments or in hydrothermal vents (Fun fact: one member of this phylum, Halomonas titanicae, was isolated from the ruins of the titanic, and helps to decompose materials such as shipwrecks on the seafloor).
Tumblr media
When the researchers analyzed this new bacteriophage, they realized that it is part of an entirely unknown viral family that has been lurking in the depths of the ocean.  Now, they will investigate the molecular machinery that defines interactions between deep sea viruses and their hosts, as well as continuing to look for new viruses in the most extreme of environments.

Throwback Thursday: Harry Hess and Seafloor Spreading.
Tumblr media
This is Harry Hammond Hess. He was the man who came up with an idea to answer Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift question: how did it happen?
He served in the US Navy where he became intrigued by the geology of the seafloor. Essentially, he noticed that the seafloor was shallower in the middle than along the edges. He identified mid-ocean ridges,
Tumblr media
and deep ocean trenches.
Tumblr media
He said that new crust was made at the mid-ocean ridges as magma oozed up out of the vents and onto the ocean floor. He noted that oceanic crust was youngest near the mid-ocean ridge and older further away. He also noted that both sides of the ridge were symmetrical.
Tumblr media
He said that the trenches were where the ocean floor was destroyed and recycled, subsiding beneath the surface and sinking into the mantle to be melted back into magma.
Tumblr media
Tune in tomorrow for a look at an animal made famous because it died due to a volcanic eruption of the Yellowstone hotspot. (And tune in next Thursday to learn about some other scientists who aided Henry Hess in his seafloor spreading theory).
