A little something for the Mass Effect Trilogy Appreciation Week.

Day 1 - Family, and Day 2 - Friendships have a lot of overlap centered on one OC and the impetus for my first Mass Effect fic. And she wasn't planned in the slightest.

It started with revisiting ME3, reaching the 'Lola' scene, and wondering if and why my Darcy Shepard would tolerate that nickname. Then, the notion that she'd had worse nicknames - and that left the empty space of 'who from?' Enter the OC.

Her surname, Graves, came first, then Kayla - she just kept mentally turning up during my commute, familiar like she'd always been part of the story. There was a physicality and attitude, all forming with inexplicable clarity. In hindsight, I've figured out a few of the influences, but it remains the most forcible manifestation of an OC ever I've experienced.

Mikayla Graves is a spunky, non-combat L2 biotic and Darcy's best friend and de facto adopted sister, making a family of 3 with Hannah. Because Darcy isn't a biotic, it's Kaidan and Kayla who provide the lens to flesh out the muddy history of biotics and L2s - Kaidan as a (mostly) success story, and Kayla as the could-have-been-worse civilian. I've got so much more to say for my fic interpretation of ME, and hopefully there'll be time for it one day.

Looks like she's not immune to the 'Churl curse.

In fact, it seems they've really taken a liking to her!

Kayla did not even knew how did these monsters got into Kivotos... did all those girls she was blackmailing forgot their weapons?! Truth is, they saved their own asses by leading the Churls to her mansion. Now, she is currently on her 23th Churl of the night, she has been begging for mercy and promising she can give them riches... but she is too deep in to now think anymore~

I think it'd be cool if her wings had a darker gray/black on the topside (backside? the side you see when they're folded), and then the underside has the blue/purple here like for display/communication. And honestly, the white lightning, I'm not sure! I like the idea of flashy wings, especially if it is being used like a threat display, but too much feels maybe drawn on instead of a natural development.

the tail tho, I LOVE the tailfin and that you even have a reason for it? omg yes this is wonderful

What better way to show this off than day 26; headcannon day!

@reborrowing I drew a fullbody of your girl Kayla! With the colors all picked out it was fairly easy, though I’m not sure wether white veins in the wings would look cool like lightning, if I should put them more sparingly, or if I should just leave them out. (It’s up to you again!)

A few headcannons for the design: The electromagnetic liquid in her horns have enough potency to stun anything that touches them, but her claws (which are entirely filled with the liquid) can serve deadly blows of electricity to an opponent. Her large sailed tail stores excess electrons to de-magnetize her body and avoid being struck by lightning herself while flying through storms. It can also provide extra charge to create bursts of lightning-magnitude electricity via friction with other objects.
