I'm focusing on Bernie Singer (my Doctor Who time-jumper OC) for the first time in a long while and feeling humbled because I really thought I had most of the episodes figured out within my overall plan for the fic - but there are apparently over 50 episodes that I still need to figure out Bernie's place in the plot 🫣

Dealer's Choice; Bernadette Popovski and her Circus!!

[F4A] Reopening The Case on Your Infuriating Illusory Ringleader

Bernadette's Circus has always walked a fine line in terms of keeping covert. It showed off the full extent of the empowered's powers while keeping it's largely unempowered audience, although there were a few shock and elation daemons who regularly visited their shows, none the wiser. It caused the Department many a headache. So the Circus was put under strict surveillance and the investigation of whatever Detective was bullheaded enough to think that they might be the one to put the Circus under.

Naturally, Sweetheart took the case.

They never found anything. Every audience member was astonished by the incredible special effects and skillful performers; the way the lion tamer could hold his head in between the lion's jaws without even flinching, the escape artist that was in chains one moment and roaming the audience the next, the acrobat who seemed to walk on air.

All they got for their troubles was a mountain of paperwork and too much time spent with the infuriating Bernadette Popovski.

"Oh, please, love- call me Bernie. Everyone does."

Sweetheart never did take that advice, and more often referred to her as "that cocky little shit". Not to her face. That would be against protocol.

So after months of getting nowhere and a perpetual headache from trying to get a straight answer out of the illusory, the case was dropped. That was the only case Sweetheart never solved.

"If this whole- detective thing falls through, feel free to give me a call. I'm sure we could find a place for you here."

It took everything they had not to deck her right then and there, and just walk out of the tent. It took even more to push their frustration and humiliation down and move on with their life, to forget that goddamn circus.

Four years passed. They moved onto different cases, different people to be annoyed at. Bernadette and her stupid smile and Russian accent faded into the deepest recesses of their mind.

Until they heard about something. An incident at the Circus. A dead audience member.

The case was back on, and this time they were going to close it.

"Detective. I wish I could say I am surprised."

It was, once again, nearly impossible to get anything out of them. Her voice had taken on a new edge, a farcry from her casual, lilting tone all those years ago. This one was defensive, tired. Now Sweetheart held all the cards, no more grasping at straws.

"I'll tell you what I told the human officer. I was debuting a new performer, a singer. Partway through an audience member fell over. By the time I got over there, they had died."

She had decided it had been a heart attack and that was all she knew. The performer, a sonal energetic by the sound of it, was holed up in her tent and Bernadette's voice took on a deadly edge when they asked to be taken to her.

"She's been through enough, she doesn't need you pestering her."

Apparently doing their job was pestering. The conversation went almost nowhere from there, and they were able to ascertain very little else. An audience member had tried to perform CPR, and clearly failed. The lion tamer, a telepath the name of Caleb, had seen the victim collapse and gone to tell Bernadette. They didn't get any further than that, but it was a start.

It was more than they'd gotten four years ago.

The ringleader didn't object as heavily to them speaking to Caleb. She was even somewhat helpful, directing them to where the telepath would probably be. But it was not without a warning.

"I understand, Detective. Go ask your questions. But, what's the phrase- my circus, my monkeys. So please don't tap the glass."

Cocky bastard couldn't even bothered to not seem suspicious during a murder investigation.

[MM4A] Interrogating Two Stubborn Circus Performers

Apparently Bernadette had trained her people well. They were just as tight lipped as she was.

They clearly knew Sweetheart had been coming, along with what that might mean for their circus; as they made their way through the rows of tents and caravans dozens of eyes had followed them, along with a a trail of whispers just loud enough for them to overhear. When they found Caleb he wasn't alone; sat a few feet away a man was giving them the death glare while simultaneously looking at Caleb like a kicked puppy. They cocked their eyebrow at that, to which the telepath laughed.

"Oh, sorry about Aslan. He's just a little bit antsy, I'm sure you understand."

When they remarked that he looked like he was about to bite their head off, he just grinned at them and turned towards the shifter. They were pretty sure he was the only one smiling in that whole field.

"Don't worry, he'd never. I'm living proof of that- hey babe! You can go, I'll meet you by the ticket booth, alright?"

That seemed to calm him down; he nodded, got up from where he was sat, and made his way over to the pair. Eyes moderately less murderous, he kissed the telepath goodbye and began to stalk through the rows of tents, checking back over his shoulder every now and again, somehow making eye contact with Sweetheart every time.

Thus the interrogation began. And while Caleb was more friendly than his boss, he was certainly no more helpful. Each question was artfully dodged or optimistically spun.

"You want to know about Bernie? Hell- she's family to me. To all of us really, even Aslan. He's a big softie, would never admit it."

His story lined up neatly with Bernadette's. He's seen a disturbance in the crowd and gone to tell her about it, since she was more experienced healer than he was, but by the time she'd made her way over there, the victim was already gone. It had been too late. The audience had been quickly cleared out after that and emergency services had been called, for all the good they could do.

As they pressed for information on the new performer, his smile faltered. Only for a moment or so, almost imperceptibly, but it was stark in Sweetheart's mind.

"Oh- well, I really think it was a spot of bad luck. They'd been singing, putting their all into it, and that person just happened to- well."

He laughed nervously, his fingers twitching at his sides.

"Look, I really should go find Aslan. We're supposed to be practising, do you mind if I go? I really have nothing else to say."

Before they could reply he was already halfway across the field, still grinning, but the smile quivering at the edges.

"Good luck, Detective! Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful!"

And with that he was gone.

And they were no closer to piecing things together.

Shit.

Surely the singer wouldn't mind if they just popped into her tent, asked a few questions. And if Popovski said not to do it, then they basically had to.

It took a few minutes of searching but they eventually found the tent, on the farthest reaches of the field, the amount of tents slowly thinning out as they approached. They hadn't necessarily meant to eavesdrop, but who were they to complain if their footfalls were particularly quiet, or the thrum of distant conversation muffled the sound of them stepping on a branch just as well as cloaking would.

"I know- it's okay. I know you didn't do anything, nothing that happened was your fault."

Sweetheart held their breath. The brittle way Bernadette spoke was so alien to her, it's previous edge still there but now akin to shattered glass. There was a gentleness to it, a tenderness.

"I'm going to protect you. I'll protect everyone."

Sweetheart wondered how far they'd go to do that. How much they'd cover up. How much they would sacrifice.

"I promise you, my Magnum Opus."

SPREAD CH.2 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Taylor Jamison

Hi SPREAD listeners! I hope everyone has been having a meaningful Pride month while enjoying the PRIDE playlist! The featured artist off SPREAD CH. 2 is dear friend of mine and a force to be reckoned with. Get a glimpse below of Taylor Jamison's life as an unapologetic songwriter and artist. HERE WE GO!

Taylor: Hey hey, my name is Taylor Jamison and I’m a songwriter/singer right here in most-of-the-time-sunny Los Angeles! I’m originally from Boulder, CO, but have been living here in LA for a second now, writing for some amazing new artists, and creating some cool tunes under my name as well!

Dan: Hi Taylor! Welcome! I am so glad that u are PRIDE's featured artist. You are a songwriting beast who is constantly on the grind. I'm excited for people to hear about ur career and your thoughts about the industry, so let's get started.

Describe a typical day in the life of a songwriter. What do u enjoy the most about it?

Taylor: I’d say a typical day in the studio with me, at least, is catching up on life with whoever I’m working with, joking around, sharing funny moments of the week, usually someone has a good hook up/sex story as well. My favorite part is that, from these shared moments, a story unfolds itself. I see myself as a “Storyteller for the Ears,” so whether it’s myself singing the song or another artist, I love being able to share a moment/feeling in time through music and watching how people react to it.

Dan: I would say that u just perfectly summed up the reason songwriters do what they do! It's all about the story and the connection. In finding this connection for yourself, describe the place that makes you feel the most inspired creatively.

Taylor: I absolutely LOVE the beach because it’s so many things to me. Gentle, but powerful. Beautiful, with a dark side. Tranquil, yet full of energy. It makes me nostalgic for days passed, while making me think forward into the future. I love going out and laying by myself with a notebook, letting the sound wash over me until the words start falling out of my head onto the paper.

Dan: LA beaches are definitely hard to beat, too! I could use a beach day myself. It's a great way to reset and get those creative juices flowing. After running through all of those emotions we then get to the actual songwriting process. Now you have countless songs to ur name. Out of those, what song of yours are u most proud of? Why?

Taylor: Ooooooo, this is a hard one. I’m gonna have to have a tie on this between, “Down”, and, “The Last Time”. When putting together the production and sound scape of, “Down”, I really wanted to create a sense of longing because that’s essentially what that song is: it’s the complete taking-down of your walls for somebody because you want to fall completely into them, letting yourself be vulnerable so they know just how much you want them. For, “The Last Time”, I decided to keep that song with just piano and vocals because adding production was going to end up making it sound cheesy, and this song has such a powerful sense of nostalgia that I wanted it to almost seem completely empty, just like how you feel sometimes when you think back on someone from your past. Plus, that key change is life (have to toot my own horn on that one lolz), I want more artists to do key changes again!!!

Dan: Girl, key changes are UNDERRATED. When done just right, they can completely change a song for me. The key change in "The Last Time" makes me scream every single time. I think we could see them make a comeback.

Now, just like anyone on this journey, there are numerous high and low points. Tell us about when the music industry has maybe made you feel inadequate. How did u overcome this?

Taylor: Ummmm, the industry can make you feel inadequate on almost a daily basis if you let it, honestly. I’d be lying if I were to say that every day is a walk in the park, cause it’s not: you feel like you're constantly trying to prove to the world that you’re talented, yet it falls on deaf ears. However, I think the cure for those feelings of inadequacy is surrounding yourself with amazing people who are just as creative, driven and positive as you are, but always making sure to be humble. Nobody likes a cocky bitch, ever, lolz.

Dan: You are speaking TRUTH in this interview, girl. Surrounding yourself with positivity is almost the only way to get through those moments of feeling inadequate. And you're right, nobody enjoys being around cockiness, even though there can be a lot of that in this industry.

As you surround yourself with driven and encouraging people, I know that also includes artists u look to for inspiration. Tell us about an artist/songwriter who inspires u. What about their artistry/ability would you like to emulate in your own?

Taylor: To kick it a bit old school, I’m gonna say Elton John because I think he was so groundbreaking and just what was needed in the world to move forward progressively. He was completely unafraid to be flamboyant and unapologetically homosexual in a time that it was still not acceptable in public overall. Plus, with Bernie Taupin on the lyrics and Elton on the melodies, they made some prettyyyyyyyy amazing music that still stands the test of time, if I don’t say so myself.

Dan: Elton is a legend and an icon, especially for what he did for queer visibility in the mainstream. I had to include him as a part of the PRIDE playlist. It would have been a crime not to, honestly.

I have mentioned earlier that u are pretty much on the go all the time, whether it's working on ur own stuff or writing for other artists. In the midst of everything u have going on, how do u manage a busy schedule and stress? How do you recharge when u need to?

Taylor: I actually work WAY better on a busy schedule, so I’m a fan of back to back sessions, all week long! But, when I do need a little break, I love getting out of LA for a sec and visiting places like San Diego, Palm Springs, Santa Barbra and more. I also love having parties with my friends, dancing around, being gay, playing beer pong. Oh, and Tequila. Tequila is always an answer to stress and busy schedules (Silver Tequila only though).

Dan: I think that LA is such an encompassing city that sometimes the only solution to getting a break is getting out. I do the same thing. Also, I did not know u liked playing beer pong! I sense a duel between you and me coming soon...

Looking past u only liking silver tequila (sorry I had to throw some shade), what do u think is the biggest misconception people have about working in this industry?

Taylor: Oh lordy, probably that you can just show up in town and become a super star. Sorry to say it, but being a cocky bitch doesn’t get you very far hahah. The only way you’re becoming an overnight pop star is if mommy and daddy are loaded, or a family member is tied into a label somehow. Gotta put in the work to really earn respect from people, at least in my book.

Dan: There are many, many people that agree with u! This industry easily and quickly exposes true talent and true intention. I love how honest and open u are.

Touching on your openness, how has ur identity influenced or affected your journey as a songwriter and artist?

Taylor: I think being gay totally influences my journey as both a songwriter and as an artist because it’s not, “normal”, per say. It doesn’t fit the cookie cutter mold of what a male pop artist has been for the past 5+ decades, so it’s sometimes difficult for people to want to get behind something still so new and not fully understood. But, even though it sometimes makes the journey harder, I wouldn’t change it for the world because I feel like it brings such a unique and interesting view to songs that straight men, and even women can’t entirely relate to.

Dan: I am holding onto hope that as time continues, more queer artists will be accepted as major label and mainstream like their straight counterparts. I think that progress in this aspect will really be made by people just like u, who are unapologetically themselves. What advice would you give to up and coming LGBTQ+ songwriters and artists?

Taylor: I would emphasize not trying to hide who you are, letting it all fall out, even if it’s hard to do. We’re in a time where LGBTQ kids need role models, people that they can say they want to grow up to be like. Unlike straight men and women, LGBTQ kids have had to feel the need to hide who they are from such a young age so as to “fit in” with normal, American society; now is the time for us to live our lives to the fullest so we can keep paving the road towards the future. (I felt like a motivational speaker there on a soap box lolz.)

Dan: U are dead on. The more LGBTQ artists and musicians that are in the spotlight, the more LGBTQ kids and youth will see that it really is okay to be themselves. We have to watch out for our LGBTQ youth as much as possible because our government doesn't seem to look out for them enough...

I am sure thinking through these questions has made u, in a way, look back on your own journey as an artist and songwriter. So what would you has been the biggest highlight of your career as an artist/songwriter so far?

Taylor: I think one of the coolest moments so far was opening for Bonnie McKee at OC Pride in 2014. Even though I now look back on my outfit and shake my damn head, it was so amazing to meet her in person, definitely one of my songwriting idols!

Dan: Hahaha, that's incredible. How cool that u were able to open for her at a Pride event! She is a songwriting queen. Definitely an idol of mine, too! (For those of you that don't know Bonnie, u can thank her for hits like 'Teenage Dream,' 'California Gurls,' 'Dynamite,' and 'Hold It Against Me.')

Taylor, it's time for my signature question. What artist/album/song have u had on repeat lately?

Taylor: Ok, album for SURE would be Kehlani’s, “Sweet Savage Sexy”: that shit is AMAZING. I’m also digging The 1975, Jon Bellion, Blackbear and Julia Michaels. “Issues”-Julia Michaels, “Do-Re-Mi”-Blackbear, “Escape”-Kehlani, “Bad Liar”-Selena Gomez and “Death Wish”-Terror Jr are definitely the go-to songs on repeat currently!!!

Dan: This list is SO solid. U know Kehlani has a soft spot in my heart. I was so excited to include her on SPREAD CH.2 as well!

Now that we are sadly wrapping up this Artist Spotlight, how can we check out ur music and stay up to date with ur releases/posts? Anything we should especially be on the lookout for?

Plus, my InstaStory’s are usually pretty fun, from what I’ve heard!)

I am back, HIYA! I am Scarlet and I have you on my OC Bingo Card and would love to know more about your Doctor Who OCs and which one (if one) is your current muse

Hi!!! I can talk about my Doctor Who OCs all the live long day so this may get long haha

So my first DW OC was Callie Jo Frazier, who popped into my head while I was watching the first few episodes of season 1. She travels with every modern Doctor throughout 2005 show (minus season 10 for plot reasons). She's friends with Martha, Yaz, Ryan, and Graham, and best friends with Rose Tyler and then eventually the Ponds as well. Donna takes on a bit more of a motherly/older sister role for her. She and Clara start as friends and then become serious girlfriends (which is literally my favorite thing ever omg you have no idea) until Clara's death in "Face the Raven". She doesn't get to properly meet Bill, but if she did they would totally be best friends. Her story focuses a lot on her often complicated relationship with the Doctor. Despite the complications, she loves and trusts the Doctor more than pretty much anyone else in the universe, and the Doctor feels the same way.

Then we have Bernie Singer, my beloved 🥰 Bernie is from our universe and ends up in the Doctor Who universe through timey-wimey events. She travels randomly through the Doctor's timeline, jumping from one point to another without knowing when and where she'll appear. She has quite a complicated relationship with the Doctor, since she knows so much about them and at times they know a lot about her from the future. Bernie does eventually fall in love with the Doctor - and River ;) - and *spoilers* the three of them marry (however informal it may be) during "The Wedding of River Song". She gets along well with all of the companions, though just like with the Doctor it's difficult for her because she knows what will happen to them in the future, and often the companions know things about her as well that they can't tell her.

And finally, we have Anna Pond! Anna is Amy's younger sister who goes along with Amy and the Doctor on their travels in the TARDIS. She only travels with Eleven because her story is contained within Amy and Rory's. There are a lot of elements to her story that I'm hesitant to share because they're massive spoilers for the plot, but if you want to know them I would be more than happy to oblige! All I'll say right now is that there's a lot more to Anna than meets the eye ;)

None of them is my current muse as of right now just because I'm focusing on other fandoms at the moment. I also may have burned myself out with them a little bit since I worked on Callie Jo and Bernie for NaNo in 2020 and 2021, and 2021 NaNo was rough. But I'm hoping I can work on at least one of them soon because it's been way too long since I wrote for any of them and I love them all so much!

Hmm, I don't know! Honestly I just would love to kinda scream about them and their relationships with the other characters because I think that's what really drives the story, you know? All three of them have such rich relationships with the Doctor and all the companions and I will never say no to an opportunity to rant about it haha but honestly I want anything and everything! Why I chose their title, what happens in a certain episode, I'm game for literally anything!

Alright, I'll ask. How did you pick the fic title? Because gotta say "Count the Cost" has meaning, there, for sure lol

How did you pick your ocs' names? Do any of them mean anything?

This has been sitting in my inbox for a couple days and I'm so sorry!

So usually my titles come from song lyrics or something of that nature. "Choose Something Like a Star" is the title of Callie Jo's fic, and is actually the title of a poem by Robert Frost! We were going to sing an arranged version of the poem as a song in one of the choirs at university and I thought the lines fit well with Callie's story of looking at the Doctor for so long as someone to be worshipped, to give her life meaning, and eventually learning that the Doctor is simply a person who will make mistakes and will sometimes burn too brightly for her to handle. Idk I think it's pretty neat haha

"A Single Thread of Gold", Bernie's fic, comes from "invisible string" by Taylor Swift! Bernie's fic centers on her jumping around the Doctor's timeline, and the idea that there's something intentionally pulling the two of them toward each other, a thread tying them together and binding them with one another, which eventually leads to them falling in love, always really appealed to me, which is why I chose that title!

Now, "Count the Cost." Anna Pond, my beloved, probably has the most spoilery title of the three. It comes from a poem written for the show, specifically the episode 'A Good Man Goes to War', in which a lot of spoiler stuff happens that I won't say because I don't wanna ruin it if you do end up watching the show haha. But the poem is:

Demons run when a good man goes to war Night will fall and drown the sun When a good man goes to war

Friendship dies and true love lies Night will fall and the dark will rise When a good man goes to war

Demons run, but count the cost The battle’s won, but the child is lost

That last little bit? Demons run but count the cost, the battle's won but the child is lost? Very big foreshadowing for Anna's story, which I'm really quite proud of :D

As for the names, some of them just kinda happened and others took forever to figure out. I think I had Callie and Bernadette just sitting in my list of future OC names and I decided 'hey, these OCs will have these names!' Callie is short for Caroline, which in some cases means 'joy' or 'song of happiness', which is kind of ironic because Callie's story is not usually one of joy lol, and the Jo in Callie Jo is short for Joelle, the inspiration for which came from Joey @alinastarkhov! And Fraizer came from a town near where I live haha.

I wanted Bernie to have a last name that had to do with music somehow, because some of the characters call her Birdie and her nickname from the Doctor is his songbird, so you know, kinda needed the 'song' part of that. And Keke @kazinejghafa helped me pick between Singer and one other one I can't remember.

I think Anna's gave me the most trouble. Keke also helped me a lot with this one. Because I wanted her to have a name that started with 'A' just like her sister Amy, but there was another spoilery component to it that put a difficult twist into the naming process. But Keke was amazing and helped throw out tons of ideas and stuff and then Anna just stuck! And it's brilliant!

Ooh, yes yes yes okay, I am always happy to share from Bernie's fic! Here's a little snippet from A Single Thread of Gold Chapter 3: The Fires of Pompeii:

“You…” Evelina turned her red-rimmed eyes toward Bernie, and for a second Bernie forgot how to breathe. “You have names more numerous than the stars scattered through the heavens. He calls you songbird, and yet your melody is one lost to you.”

The confidence with which Evelina spoke shook Bernie to the core, even as she puzzled over her words. Songbird? Melody? They meant nothing to her, but she couldn’t shake the dread rising like a tide in her stomach.

“But the rest of creation calls you Prophet,” Evelina continued.

Chills crawled down Bernie’s spine. Her mouth moved on its own. “Prophet?”

“The one with the gift. The gift of universal sight.”
