Tag: Character Inspiration

This is the last tag on my to do list. I'll have to recheck the notes but I think this about wraps it up thus far. It’s also the one I took the longest to complete…

Ok! So I had to go digging through some old files for this tag. All of the main characters in the Festival project started out as voices for news articles to develop the world of Hollow Grove. All of them and the world itself have changed a lot since their initial conception in late 2016. One day I may share those early character sketches.

But now to the tag proper!

Mariela: Visually, I drew a lot of inspiration from Eryn Allen Kane and Jessica Williams. The inspiration for her personality is a lot harder to pin down for me. I drew a lot of her interests and beliefs from my own but she's also fearless, sarcastic, and does not take any shit. I think of Nellie Bly and Ida B. Wells—she looks up to as heroes in her profession. I'm going to get a little deep and say she initially gave voice to some feelings I had about the world circa 2016 but she's not just that anymore.

September: Visually, the actors Gilbert Roland with a sprinkling of Ramon Novarro. Cecil Palmer's character in Welcome to Night Vale is baked somewhere deep in September's DNA. I'll also reveal my inner Whovian and admit that his character was very much inspired by The Doctor (particularly a mix of the Tennant (circa Donna Noble) and Capaldi eras), though replace their energetic eccentricity with that of a mild mannered, dry humored professor and you have September. At least on the surface. He's a mess beneath it all.

Hero: Out of all the characters, Hero is the character I put a lot of myself in personality wise, especially as I was right after college. As an intern at the in-universe newspaper, he gave a lot of voice to the ennui of finding your way in adult life mixed with dry humor and a hint of fatalism. After years of character development, he's not just that anymore but that is still a key component of his character. Visually, the best approximation I could find is Mackenyu as he appears in Chihayafuru.

Emery: Emery is also a response to some feelings I had about the world in 2016. Someone who, on the surface, is very salt of the earth--telling things as they are whether or not you like to hear it--but deep down is frustrated and put upon like everyone else, and has very different conclusions about it. There's definitely an injection of Ron Swanson from Parks & Rec in his character but he also comes off as the straight man in whatever wacky scenario I put him in. Visually, he's a mix of a younger, close shaven Zach Gallifinakis and Jesse Plemons.

Regina: Regina's look is very much inspired by the old vamps of Hollywood like Theda Bara (and some heavy doses of Zoey Deschanel) with some of Morticia Adams macabre sensibilities. She has a touch of quirky eccentricity that I drew from Regina Spektor's music, particularly "Pavlov's Daughter." She's daring and histrionic--a perfect mishmash of qualities. A mystery even to myself until recently.

Mariela:

“Are they worried you’re giving up a lucrative marketing career to become a hack journalist in a small town newspaper? [...] “Dang. Still just me then.”

“I’m going to assume that was the carbon monoxide talking and let you try again, September.”

“This here is the Sisyphean task you inflicted on our poor intern that drove him to hopelessness and despair."

“I know you did not call me out here to move some twigs around,” Mariela said in disbelief.

“We tell the news, as completely as we can, and let our readers decide for themselves. We shouldn’t pick and choose what we report based on personal feelings.”

“Because the victims’ families deserve to know what happened that night. Because everyone needs to know if it could happen again."

September:

“I’m always needed somewhere." September pinched his nose before dropping his hand again. “This beast never sleeps.”

“Well, you’re laying it on a bit thick, don’t you think,” he said with a chuckle as he perused the messages again in good humor. “Is this what people call ‘trolling’ nowadays.”

“The truth isn’t that simple, Mariela. It just shows you how dirty the water is and the true depth of it may be forever out of reach."

“And why’s that, sweetheart? Should I put up the schnapps so I don’t offend the teetotalers as well?”

“Why don’t you lower the gun, Barney, and we’ll both forget this happened.”

“I don’t need your help,” September broke in acidly. “I did you the favor, remember?

“Your secrets are safe with me.”

“I need a smoke."

“Behave.” He scolds with no heat behind it.

“Mhm, yessir.” Buck purrs, his lips moving across Tommy’s bare shoulder. 

“Fuck.” Tommy breathes out and completely stills, and Buck can’t really see his face but he knows his boyfriend closed his eyes and is trying to calm down – which can’t be easy with Buck still plastered against his back. “This food is gonna burn if you keep this up. And we have guests to feed.” He adds, and as if to make a point, he flips a slightly overdone burger, Buck hindering his movements just a little bit.

Before he can respond, he hears another voice get through the chatter and music and reach his ears.

“Buck!” Chimney calls, and Buck looks over his shoulder to find everyone’s eyes on him, amused expressions on their faces. “Don’t distract our cook, we’re starving!”

“I’m just scolding him for taking his shirt off.” Buck says easily, then adds a little louder, to Tommy but making sure everyone hears, “Babe, you’re gonna burn yourself, you’re a firefighter, you should know better.” He shakes his head, and Tommy looks back at him with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh, you’re gonna pretend like you don’t approve?”

“Oh, I so don’t, Tommy, at all.” Buck tries to keep a straight face, but a chuckle bubbles out of him anyway. “You’re such a distraction, this is dangerous for everyone here.”

“I think you’re the only one with that problem, Buckaroo.” Hen laughs, and only then Buck remembers everyone’s still paying attention to them. It’s so easy to get lost in Tommy, to feel like it’s just them, even in a crowd of people. So distracting. It’s a hazard, really. He should keep Tommy away from everyone, preferably locked in the bedroom with him, for everyone’s safety.
