Son of the Dragon Chapter 3: As the World Falls Down

The entirety of the kingdom gathered at the gates of the castle. People from all corners of the realm, great or small estates, royalty, nobility, gentry, priests, mages, and common men, were invited to the royal capital for the Christening of the young prince. It was a great cause for celebration, it was practically a festival. 

There were towers of gifts from every citizen, great and small. There were even children who gave the little prince their toys. Even those of less… reputable means gathered gifts for the little prince, for his mother offered forgiveness to criminals, rehabilitation, and second chances. She had earned the respect of the whole kingdom, becoming known to them all as the Gentle One.

Celebrities and royals from around the land came to view the christening. The second son of the Afterglow Savannah royal line, with the great actor and model, Vil Schoenheit, several citizens of the Coral Sea, the Asim family, and the son of one of the greatest healers in the Kingdom of Roses. Even the reclusive heir to the Shroud estate was attending the festivities. 

When it was time for the event to begin, the royal couple entered the throne room, the event being broadcasted magically around the kingdom. They sat on the thrones carved out of black stone, placing the babe in a gunmetal-colored crib between them. Maleficent practically strode towards them from the other side of the Dias, then turned to the crowd and raised her hands to the air. “Listen well, all of you! It is time that we Christen my beloved great-grandson. I thank you all for attending here, and may my grandson and his family live long.” 

The crowd cheered as she approached the cradle, twirling her fingers around the orb on her staff. “Arius Mallak Dracionia, first of your name. I name you a prince, and over this kingdom, you will one day reign. I give this gift to you: I give you the power of a King. You will lead, and the kingdom will follow you.” A little ball of verdant light floated from her fingers to surround the child before being absorbed into him, granting him the gift that was truly fit for a future king. The gathered guests approached the thrones and cradled their gifts. 

Leona Kingscholar offered bracelets forged from gold and black opals, a symbol of protection and to help conquer fear. 

Iidia Shroud offered a lantern forged of black and silver metal, the inside lit by green dragon flames that would chase away all nightmares and shadows. 

Next was Kalim al-Asim, who gifted the child with beautiful clothes made with emerald silks sewn with pearls, garnets, carnelians, and onyx. 

The young Vil Schoenheit offered a silver music box with the iconic sword piercing a heart, inside revealing a castle with a dragon and a princess.

 Azul Ashengrotto, a prominent businessman from the Coral Sea, approached with a large clamshell, containing a glowing blue pearl. The pearl was, in truth, a crystal ball that would allow the boy to see those he is close to. 

Finally, Riddle Rosehearts, son of the Kingdom of Roses’ primary healer, offered a cut black and gold rose to plant in the royal gardens. 

Each gift was something near and dear to the princess’ heart, and she knew that her child would adore, it and was taken to the nursery. Music was played by bards and minstrels, and all present danced and talked and indulged. Maleficent hustled her grandson and his wife off the dais so that they could go dance together as she sat on her elevated throne, happily holding her great-grandson the child.

 Little Arius looked out over the crowd, his black eyes enamored by the swirling colors. She chuckled as she summoned little sparks of light to entertain the child. Lilia strode up to her side, running a finger over Arius’ cheek. “You seem to be enjoying yourself, my lady.” Maleficent looked up at her most trusted general with a smile as Arius grabbed at the sparks. “I am. This is the happiest I have been in so long, since…” She lowered her topaz eyes to Arius, her smile slipping away. “Since Malleus was born.”

Lillia patted her shoulder gently. “Don’t worry, my Queen. We will protect this new family of ours.” She smiled at him before returning her attention to her great-grandson, scooping him up and carrying him down the dias and to the dancefloor, spinning into a graceful waltz. 

As the celebration wound to a close, Houmi was giving her farewells before one of the guests approached. Houmi blinked as she looked at the guest, a woman with perfectly coiffed black hair, decorated with silver vines. It was clear that this was a fae woman, perhaps she was related to someone in the court? 

“So, you are Malleus’ wife? Pity, I was thinking I would get an invitation.” 

Houmi blinked, taking a step back in shock at the sudden confrontation. “We… we wanted a small ceremony. H-He didn’t want too much fanfare.”

“Odd, you would think that a king would invite his actual family.” The woman looked down her nose at Houmi. 

The princess became uncomfortable, looking away from the woman. “Oh, I-I’m very sorry.”

“You know you don’t deserve him, right? He deserves to be with someone who is royalty, not some human trash like you.”

Houmi’s head snapped up angrily. “My lady,” she hissed between clenched teeth, “I may be a human, I may not have magic, but you,” Houmi stepped forwards so that the two women were only inches apart, “do not get to decide such things for my husband.”

“My love?” Malleus’ voice was suddenly behind his wife.

Houmi looked over her shoulder, her black eyes still smoldering with anger. “Oh… Tsunotaro.”

The other woman gasped at the nickname and was about to say more until Malleus wrapped his arm around his wife and pulled her to his side. “Narcissa, I have to ask you not to insult my wife. I do believe that your carriage is awaiting you.” They turned quickly and awakened away from the other woman. 

Once they were certain eavesdropping ears were not listening, Houmi looked up at Malleus. “Malleus, who was that? She said she was related to you.”

Malleus groaned and rubbed his forehead. “Yes… she’s a distant cousin of mine. When I came of age, her family has been trying to make us spend time together.” 

Houmi arched an incredulous eyebrow. “You’re cousins… and they wanted you to marry?”

Malleus sighed and nodded, squeezing her shoulder. “She doesn’t matter, A Stór. I have no plan to let any other cause us any trouble.”

Houmi chuckled as they returned to Maleficent's side to retrieve their little one. It was a teasing struggle to get the great queen to give back their baby. For the first time in many generations, the Royal Family of the Valley of Thorns was finally happy.
