The O Antiphons

The importance of O Antiphons is twofold: Each one highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), and O Emmanuel. Also, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah. Lets now look at each antiphon with just a sample of Isaiahs related prophecies.

O Sapientia : O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation. Isaiah had prophesied, The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:2-3), and Wonderful is His counsel and great is His wisdom. (Isaiah 28:29).

O Adonai: O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out your mighty hand to set us free. Isaiah had prophesied, But He shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the lands afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. (Isaiah 11:4-5); and Indeed the Lord will be there with us, majestic; yes the Lord our judge, the Lord our lawgiver, the Lord our king, he it is who will save us. (Isaiah 33:22).

O Radix Jesse: O Flower of Jesse's stem, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid. Isaiah had prophesied, But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. (Isaiah 11:1), and A On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious. (Isaiah 11:10). Remember also that Jesse was the father of King David, and Micah had prophesied that the Messiah would be of the house and lineage of David and be born in Davids city, Bethlehem (Micah 5:1).

O Clavis David: O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at your will the gate of Heaven: Come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead your captive people into freedom. Isaiah had prophesied, AI will place the Key of the House of David on His shoulder; when he opens, no one will shut, when he shuts, no one will open. (Isaiah 22:22), and His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from Davids throne, and over His kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. (Isaiah 9:6).

O Oriens: O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. Isaiah had prophesied, The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown. (Isaiah 9:1).

O Rex Gentium: O King of all the nations, the only joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature you fashioned from the dust. Isaiah had prophesied, For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:5), and He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. (Isaiah 2:4) .

O Emmanuel: O Emmanuel, king and lawgiver, desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God. Isaiah had prophesied, The Lord himself will give you this sign: the Virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.  (Isaiah 7:14). Remember Emmanuel means God is with us.

According to Professor Robert Greenberg of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Benedictine monks arranged these antiphons with a definite purpose. If one starts with the last title and takes the first letter of each one - Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia - the Latin words ero cras are formed, meaning, Tomorrow, I will come. Therefore, the Lord Jesus, whose coming we have prepared for in Advent and whom we have addressed in these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to us, Tomorrow, I will come. So the O Antiphons not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation,but bring it to a joyful conclusion.

There once was a witch named Vespera, who lived in the kingdom of Flumencar. She was known for her powerful magic, and from all over the kingdom people came to seek her aid.

One fateful day, an evil wizard inflicted upon the queen a terrible curse: the child she was due to bear in six week’s time, and any children after that, would be born horribly disfigured and die before they came of age. The royal family sought out Vespera, hoping she could undo the curse.

She did as they asked, though in the process she learned that the child was a boy. For many centuries, Flumencar had abided by the strict tradition that only women may rule. So when the Queen and King asked her what her payment would be, she looked them straight in the eye and said, “I have been looking for an apprentice for quite some time now, and I know the royal family has no use for male children. When you birth a son, he shall be mine.”

The Queen agreed far too eagerly, and it made Vespera uneasy. But she knew not to question Her Majesty’s decisions.

Six weeks later, the Queen gave birth to a healthy baby boy. There were some rumors that Vespera had cast her own curse and made sure the child’s sex was in her favor. She promised she had not, but she understood how they had come to that conclusion.

From the first week forward, Vespera raised the boy. Originally, she had given him the name Arthur—short and sweet, with noble connotations.

Arthur was seven the first time he asked about his biological parents. Vespera thought it cruel to make him believe that she was his mother by blood, and so she had never told him so.

“Mother Vespera, did you know my parents?”

Vespera sighed. “The people who gave you life were the Queen and King of this nation, but the system had no place for princes. I took you in so you may harness your true potential, and not be left to waste in a castle they might never let you leave.”

Arthur didn’t ask any questions about his parents after that.

Vespera lived in a cottage just outside a village, and Arthur grew up around the village children. The townspeople saw no harm in this. They respected Vespera greatly, and knew if her apprentice was to inherit any of her talent, he was to be respected as well.

As he grew, he became more and more like his biological mother in looks: strawberry blond hair, shining silver eyes and slim, graceful figure. But at the same time, his mentor taught him all she knew about magic. He grew into a fine young man, both dashing and knowledgeable.

Soon came the day of Arthur’s 18th birthday. He had anticipated this day greatly. For as long as he could remember, Vespera had spoken of the Naming Ceremony. On this day, he would become a proper witch with his true name.

On a hill near the village was a shrine to Cantamen, high deity of magic. It was to this deity that all witches owed their powers. It was said that in the days when gods walked the earth, Cantamen taught magic to those they thought worthy.

Arthur had never been to the shrine. Vespera had always instructed him not to come up here until the Naming Ceremony. Now as she brought him to the shrine, he couldn’t help but smile in anticipation.

“Cantamen, invoco te. Hunc benedicat, noverit potentiam tuam. Ostende nobis nomen quo nostis eum.”

The ritual occurred at twilight, yet the sky seemed to light up when she finished her chant. Arthur’s breath hitched.

An echoing voice rumbled throughout the hills. “Oriens. Rising Dawn.”

And then everything went silent.

They stood there, unmoving, before Vespera turned to her student. “Well, there you go. You’re a proper witch now, Oriens.”

He said nothing, rolling the name around in his head. Oriens. Rising Dawn. He liked it.

They headed down the hill, a visible pep in his step with the knowledge that he was finally a proper witch.

A few years later, and Oriens was living on his own, making a living in the neighboring kingdom of Claronam. He still visited his mentor from time to time, though he spent most of his time using his magic to bring peace to the common people of the kingdom.

One stormy night, he heard a knock on his door. To his surprise, when he opened it, a young lady about his age was soaked and shivering. “H-hello sir, I’m s-sorry to intrude but I-I have no p-place to go…m-may I—”

“Yes, come in, you must be freezing. Dear, why were you be outside in such a storm? I’ll get you a blanket.”

“T-t-thank you,” she said, stumbling inside. Oriens directed her to the couch and went to fetch a blanket and make her some tea.

“Now, what brings you to this corner of Claronam?”

“I-I…there was a wyrm, it…it tried to kill me, but I…”

“Oh, dear, that must have been horrible. Now, I don’t think I got your name.”

“V-Vita.”

“Vita, lovely name. I’m Oriens. Don’t worry, you can stay here for as long as you need. But it seems you’ve had a long day. I’ve made you some herbal tea, it should calm you down a bit. Then you should get some rest.”

“T-thank you, Mr. Oriens.”

The next morning, Oriens was surprised to find Vita already awake by the time he came downstairs. “My, and people say I wake up early.”

“Oh? Hello, sir. I apologize, if you’d like me to go—”

“No, it’s fine. I’m just surprised, that’s all.”

He sat down next to her on the couch. “When you tried to tell me what happened yesterday, you said something about a wyrm. What happened?”

“It-it just came out of nowhere. I was just trying to pick flowers…but then it attacked me, and it told me to never go back home.”

“Hmm…from what I know of wyrms, they’re shapeshifters. The wyrm might have wanted to impersonate you. Do you have any idea why it might target you specifically? Are you a member of a noble family?”

“Well…I’m a princess, so…”

“Oh.” Then he realized. “Oh! Oh, dear, I had you sleeping on the couch like any other person, I’m so—”

“It’s okay, you didn’t know, and any shelter is better than no shelter.” She squeezed his hand in appreciation. Oriens felt his face grow warm.

“Is there anything you’d like? Any way I could make this more comfortable?”

“No, it’s okay. Except maybe you could make some more of that tea. It was delicious.”

The witch demanded the customary price for helping the royal family, the first born son of the queen, as payment. Little did she know that the realm’s society is matriarchal in nature and so controlling the first born son of the queen is of no use to the witch at all.

Y’shtola awoke to agony. Every breath was tight burning, like her lungs were too small and filled with acid. Her head pulsed in time with her heart, her ears rang like the inside of a bell, and it tasted like something had crawled into her mouth and died a week ago. Her eyes… well of course they didn’t work, but they throbbed. She wanted to be sick, but there wasn’t strength in her body to lift herself to hurl over the side of the bed, not that her left arm could move at any rate, with the way it was folded over her chest. She groaned and searched her mind for recollection…

Right. The last thing she could remember was bleeding out in the mud and ash of Rhalgr’s Reach. The clean, or at least it was clean before she had lain on it for gods know how long, bedding would imply that she was no longer there. The weight of her mortal coil heavily insisted that it was not yet shuffled off. Other than that, she couldn’t say.

Why did her head pulse in the way it did? She knew the symptoms of aether drain and severe blood loss, but it felt like there was *too much* aether in her right now, it was practically aether sickness, which didn’t make any sense in someone who had lived in Eorzea nearly ten years.

She groggily expanded her awareness from just her body, imagining herself raising her lamp of aethersight to cast light on her surroundings. She had a room to herself in a ward that was distinctly of Garlean make… it must have been Castrum Oriens. The lack of dividing curtains told her she had this ward to herself, which was quite frankly ludicrous with the attack on Rhalgr’s Reach and the amount of casualties that the skirmishes all throughout Gyr Abania ought to produce…

Ah, not completely to herself.

Xiao sat at the foot of her bed holding a book. The ink on it was just faintly aetherically charged enough to make out some of the words; Xiao’s muttering as she struggled to sound out words every so often just confirmed it. She was attempting to learn more conjury.

Well that explained it. Some of it.

“I am no primal seeking to gorge upon aether, why do I feel so overstuffed?”

She watched Xiao’s ears go from a flattened determination to a perked up attentiveness. Xiao turned around completely. Haggard, worried lines on her face, a disturbingly pale complexion, and salt lined trails down her cheeks betrayed the anguish that she had gone through. She almost rushed onto the bed to collapse onto Y’shtola in a bear hug of relief, but stopped herself, thinking better of it as Y’shtola winced simply from the shifting of the mattress by her feet.

“What’s the meaning of this?”

Xiao arched an eyebrow, “Meanin’ o’ which?”

Y’shtola gestured with her right arm, finding the strength to at least bend her elbow to gesture around the room, “Why am I in a ward alone? Where is everyone else? Why are you practicing your conjury on me?”

Xiao’s face trembled and broke up like the way it always did when she was about to cry. Y’shtola saw it quite often before the events in Ul’dah. She had only seen it once since.

“‘M-m so glad yer awake!” Fresh hot tears raced down Xiao’s cheeks, retracing the salt-laid path of their predecessors, “W-was so, so w-worried th-that—”

“Please, Xiao. Answers. Also, I know you do not mean to, but you are sickening me with the amount of aether you’re attempting to channel into me. That I have not popped like a bomb is simply a testament of how poorly you channel your aether.”

Xiao withdrew as if Y’shtola had slapped her across the face, “B-but yer personal aether—”

“It would have naturally replenished with time and sustenance. If I were capable of reviving from nothing but channeled aether and piss poor conjury, I would have preferred access to crystals instead. Now. Answers. Why isn’t the ward filled with other wounded?”

“I-I-I re-requested that ye—”

“That I be given a room of my own? What makes me so important as to deny soldiers the space? The other wards must be as overstuffed as I.”

“B-but—”

“And the others, the Scions, are they all packed in like sardines?”

“N-no they’ve re-returned to L-limsa an' leavin' fer Doma—”

“And why aren’t you with them? Why are you here spellcasting with a tome so old it uses the term Cura?”

“Decided to stay be-behind, t’ ‘elp ye—”

“No. Leave.”

“W-why—”

“Because any plan that the Scions have will only benefit from your presence and the prowess you would lend. The world dearly needs a Warrior of Light, and I ill-need a nursemaid with third-rate conjury." She looked away, purposefully averting her gaze from Xiao, "Now go fetch someone who can repopulate this ward, and then leave. Let me convalesce in peace.”

The nausea that arose in her throat the moment that Xiao left the room was not of Xiao's making, nor of her wound's, but fully of her own. Self-loathing churned her stomach, inflamed the long gash that ran diagonally from her shoulder to her hip, and threatened to spill from her mouth.

But what could she have done? How could she have otherwise made Xiao leave her side? They never finished the argument they had, that Y'shtola was avoiding. No doubt, when she had recovered some, Xiao wanted to be able to continue it. Of course she would avoid a moons long journey to the other side of the Star to be with her injured lover. But it was exactly why the argument would go nowhere, that Y'shtola could not bear to be with Xiao even a moment more.

She saw clearly that Xiao would prioritize her over everything else. If Haurchefant had survived his mortal wound, Xiao likely would not have pursued the Archbishop, and who knows what horrors would have been wrought had Thordan VII been given free reign in Azys Lla. And what she would have done for Haurchefant, she would also do for Y'shtola. If it came to it, if the entire Star fell to ruin around them, Xiao would prop up just enough sky to be with her.

Y'shtola couldn't handle that. She couldn't handle knowing that Xiao would doom the Star for her, that it was a worthwhile trade in Xiao's eyes.

Not when Y'shtola was a third-rate lover who could barley be honest about her own feelings, let alone commit to them.
