- Crosshair is a whiny cunt. I'm sorry but he is, he never stops complaining and he makes it everyone's problem

- Wrecker is also whiny, but its okay because he hardly gets sick so when he goes down he GOES DOWN.

- ^^ and he's like a superspreader so he gives it to everyone

- Hunter avoids it 70% of the time but when he does get sick he gets ear infections, it's really sad and he has a really bad sick voice

- Echo doesn't get sick. Ever. No one had ever seen him sick before ever- not even when he was with the domino's. Dude is just immune????

- Tech gets sick. He says he doesn't and then he does and then he CRASHES.

- kinda a sad one, but Crosshair tends to not eat when he's sick because he's scared of throwing up. He's also scared of watching others throw up. And it's all Wrecker does when he's sick

Outpatient

Ok, hmm, I have 3 - 5 brains cells back to work. This has been a strange day.

When I went into the surgery center, the person leading me down the hallway introduced herself; "Hi, I'm Kelly, I'll be with you the whole time you're here."

Honestly, between a lifetime of farm veterinary emergencies and the whole Childbearing Thing, I am pretty darned nonchalant about medical care. I'm not worried. But it's sweet when someone tries to make me feel 'better'. I just roll with it. It's the thought that counts.

She got me settled in a dentist's chair and started all the minutia of prep; the sticky electrodes on my arms, the blood pressure cuff, the little finger-clamp-thingee. She gave me a small cup of versed, explaining that it would calm me down. Not necessary, my learnéd friend, Kelly, but I'll take it. Gimmee.

Then we had to do the little "why are you even here" dance. Apparently, Mandibular tori are often small and not an issue. Often. Not always. When they turn into big honkin' chunks of bone that interfere with eating or hygiene, then they have to go. And every dratblasted dental person I mentioned them to always tried to tell me they're not an issue! Until they look in my actual mouth and say. OH. Uh. Yeah, that's an issue. Grrr.

Next she hooked a nasal cannula over my face for nitrous oxide. That I have never had before, that I can remember, and I was curious if it would make me giddy or giggly. It did not. My head got very quiet inside, though. I was enjoying that, but my silence made the nurses nervous, and they kept asking if I was ok. I was ok. Just suuuuper quiet. And enjoying it.

The surgeon entered the room and he and the nurses did an interesting little call-and-response routine to ensure that I am the correct patient getting the correct surgery on the correct side of the body. Then the IV medi c i n ooooooooOOOPsie - waking up time!

I have never before had so MUCH novocaine that my mouth was still numb 8 hours later. Not complaining; I'm sure I don't want to know what it feels like in there with a chunk of bone cut out. Very odd, though.

you swear spectacularly at your phone, earning disapproving glares from a few old ladies sitting in the corner of the cafe. heart pounding in you chest, you sweep all your belongings off the table into your bag, almost knocking over your caramel macchiato.

hajime looks up from his phone, unbothered as he watches on. “why,” he teases, “the girls lock themselves inside the storage closet again?”

and that’s when you snap, the panic and anxiety swirling inside you a maelstrom.

“kanoka amanai just broke her wrist,” you bite out. you feel your nails digging into your palms under the table. your fellow olympic coach’s demeanor changes immediately, all serious and calculating, and more than a little apologetic.

“she's your ace, isn't she? have they moved her at all?”

“she's at the hospital waiting to do some scans,” you manage to get the words out, despite the vice-like grip anxiety has on your insides, squeezing and twisting. it gets worse with each second that passes, and you wrap your arms around yourself to stop the pain, but to no avail. “shoko is with her.”

he runs a large hand through his hair, muttering a quiet curse under his breath.

“i'm going over to the hospital to check up on her,” you mumble, getting up to leave.

he rises from his seat. “let me drive you. ah-ah-ah, not a question.” he tuts, even as you open your mouth to argue. “it's a half hour’s drive away. you are not going there yourself.” 

mumbling a quiet thank-you, you let hajime lead you out of the café with his hand placed against your upper back. the muscles in your body relax, the built-up tension not exactly gone, but definitely eased a little.

the walk out to the carpark is solemn, neither of you saying a word. he ushers you gently into the passenger seat. you've never sat in his vintage car before and you realize it smells like him; the mellow yet distinctive smell of his cologne pervades the vehicle's interior, coupled with the sandalwood of the air purifier and the slightly clinical smell of sports medi-kits.

his car smells like home.

you can't stop thinking about the accident, though. how did it happen? why did it happen? most importantly, could you have done anything to stop it if you had been there?

the journey seems to pass quickly. the two of you rush to the reception the second the car is parked and locked, and a nurse helps you locate kanoka’s room. hajime knocks thrice and pushes the door open. 

your eyes widen as you spot kanoka sitting pale-faced in the uncomfortable hospital chair, outside hitter shoko hirugami at her side. 

“hey, coach,” they say in unison.

“don’t you ‘hey, coach’ me,” you say sternly. you squat by kanoka’s chair, tenderly holding her hand to inspect her injured wrist. “damn, this is… bad. really bad.” you look up at your guilty-looking ace, then at a worried shoko. 

“how did this happen?” hajime asks sharply from behind you.

“took a nasty tumble on the gym floor during practice,” shoko says glumly. “sprained her ankle, too.”

you swallow the lump that slowly but surely forms in your throat. “how long will it take to heal?”

kanoka slumps in her seat, and your heart sinks to your stomach.

“the doctor said it might be at least three months before i can even think about playing again.”

you draw a long, rattling breath of air, trying to control your breathing, and she averts her gaze, looking even more guilty than before. “i thought i told you to be more careful,” you chide, more worried than angry. 

“i'm so, so sorry,” she whispers shakily, on the verge of tears. “i never saw this coming.”

“rest for now, okay? don't exert yourself. if you recover quickly, you'll be just in time for the olympics.” you say comfortingly. 

and you're not sure if you're convincing her or yourself - you both know there's no way of telling if she'll really be good to go. 

a nurse pops in and brings kanoka out to do her scans; shoko follows. now that it's just you and hajime in the room, you slump against the wall, head in your hands, sliding down until you're sitting on the floor. 

“this is a huge mess,” you mumble through the gaps between your fingers.

hajime is silent in his corner of the room for a good while. you hear footsteps coming closer and closer, then he's a welcome, familiar warmth beside you on the floor, his right knee bumping against yours. 

“y/n, look at me.” 

gently, he pries your hands off your face. he takes them in his, squeezes them tightly, looks right into your eyes.

“listen to me. we'll get through this, okay? together.”

the way he says it? it makes you kind of believe it.

an hour later, the two of you are heading back to hajime's car. kanoka and shoko have already got a taxi home, and hajime insists on driving you back to your apartment. as he expertly reverses out of the hospital parking lot and turns onto the main road, he looks over at you.

“do you want to put some music on?” he asks quietly. “go ahead, hook your phone up to the speaker systems.”

you do that, clicking on the first spotify playlist that pops up on the homepage of the app. tip toe by hybs starts playing, and hajime chuckles as he turns his attention back to the road, much to your annoyance.

“are you laughing at my taste in music?” you demand.

“nothing, just…” feeling his eyes on you, he takes a second to choose his words more carefully. “didn't know you were into this kinda music.”

“i've been told i look like an alt rock girl,” you remark, “but i like this better. if you don't like it, i could always-”

“keep it on,” he says abruptly, eyes still fixed on the road. “i like it.”

the rest of the drive ends up consisting mostly of small talk, punctuated by comfortable periods of silence filled with soft music. it's nice like this - would've been nicer if the circumstances were less unfortunate, though. but it’s nice. being with him is nice.

“y'know, your cousin's cooking up some crazy promotion idea as we speak,” hajime remarks offhandedly as he turns onto your street. “called me at 3 a.m. on wednesday to talk about it.”

“when is he not cooking something up?” you quip, and he laughs. “what did he tell you?”

“he said something about appealing to young adults and teens, i think,” he murmurs. “wants to send the players for a series of interviews on national television. i believe we've got one lined up as well, just for the two of us.”

you try not to think about that. 

“oh, your team is going to need some serious publicity training before you put them out there,” you remark, already thinking of the damage the msby players alone can - and will - do.

he grimaces. “i'm well aware.”

you stop him right in front of your block and he parks the car on the sidewalk, jogging over to open the door for you. the evening breeze is nice and cool as he walks you to the lobby door. 

at the top of the steps you thank him for the coffee, and for driving you.

he gives you a small smile and says, “you were taking so long to order in front of me that i had to intervene.”

“so if i keep running into you at cafés, it's free coffee for me?”

“i wouldn't mind buying coffee for you every day." he smiles even wider at your surprised expression, hands stuffed in his pockets. “see you on monday. goodnight, y/n,” he calls out, walking back to his car.

“goodnight, hajime,” you whisper after him.

that night, you dream of vintage cars, of caramel macchiatos, and of him.
