commander talis after getting seriously injured in an ambush fight limps his way to what he assumes is a farmhouse, hoping to get some kind of help or medi-care

viktor having seen the limps and grunts and very clear blood on this strange odd man knows he’s making his way to his humble abode and is worried that he might be the bloodied man’s next victim, so when the door is knocked, thud thud thud, loud and booming with urgency viktor readys his shovel, wretches the door opens and slams on the man’s face before he could even talk.

Oh? He sees the badge on the man, piltovers symbol for its generals and commanders he goes oops! Might as well.. not let him stay in the cold night? Brings him to the only bed he has and bandages Jayce’s wounds.

commander Jayce wakes up to screaming in his head and dull pain. Before he realizes that this is 1) not hell. 2) not heaven. 3) not purgatory. 4) and not in a medical tent they hold out in the countries checkpoints.

and then he sees him. A tiny little boy, shovel behind his back with a meek sorry.

“Your awake,” the boy says, “sorry, you would’ve been awake earlier had I not hit you with my shovel.”

Jayce gives him a look, and the other sighs, “well? What was I supposed to do?! A wounded man with blood on his face making way to me? I thought you were going to kill me!”

Jayce talis spends the rest of his days at the farmhouse, either resting in bed with some soup next to him or regaining his strength doing farm work.

It’s.. not that bad, the farm work was a bit tiring and annoying. Do this, pick that, pull this, feed them, herd it, check that, take this, hold that. But Viktor certainly made it better.

so when the war is over, and he’s rewarded for his war efforts with whatever he may desire all he asks is to be retired, and to never be bothered again.

everyone suspects that he wants someone. perhaps a lover? Or a friend? But they never really expected him to leave the relishes and rewards that piltover would gift to him for being a veteran, some expected him to want a beautiful wife— mayhaps the Medardas daughter, or the nobles of the other houses. Some expected him to ask for a harem. Some for a house or mansion. Some for riches or gold.

but for him to ask for retirement? And let alone live piltover over to the desolate fields of animals and grass? There must’ve been someone, or something. Some suspected that he was ridden with a mental disease, PSTD? Some expected a lonely farm girl. Some left it at the fact that maybe Ex-commander Jayce Talis just wanted a life of peace, and they all accepted it, who wouldn’t want such a thing? Especially someone who had experienced the horrors of war first hand?

Viktor is surprised when the very same commander he nursed back to healths months before the war ended came back hugging onto him like a lifeline. He’s not complaining tho, he needed the extra muscles and hands anyway.

jayce appreciates the care, he does, but he's already getting impatient. so jayce decides to get up and walk around and maybe help but when the boy-viktor-sees him, he scowls and tells jayce to sit down. jayce tells him that he's feeling better and viktor shakes his head, insists that he sit down. jayce could refuse, he's older and a commander but... viktor is his caretaker and he feels that that would be rude. he sits down and he lets himself be fussed over. he finds out that he likes it.

when he's recovered somewhat that's when viktor lets him help. the farm work is tiring but it's fulfilling. it reminds jayce of working at the forge. and viktor can be bossy but jayce finds that... he likes it. with his position, he expects people to be scared and back down when he doesn't budge but viktor being bossy doesn't make him angry. instead, jayce finds that he likes it.

easy to just do what viktor says and he finds that he likes viktor soft thanks and smiles. finds the simpler food viktor makes to be more satisfying that the lush food he's had before. there's something about seeing viktor by the fireplace stirring the pot and the way viktor watches him when he eats and his relieved and amazed smile when he says that the food is good that jayce finds liking. even loving. viktor... is rather lovely, isn't he?

the bed is small-small for jayce-and uncomfortable but jayce doesn't say that. he has a feeling that viktor knows that he thinks that though. and when jayce he realizes that the bed is small because it's viktor's bed and it's the only bed and that viktor gave it to him so he can recover properly and is now sleeping in a cot by the fireplace, jayce feels guilty. tells viktor that he can have his bed now and he'll take the cot but viktor refuses. he'll get his bed back when jayce finally recovers and not before then!

and in the following days, jayce turns it over in his mind. he has an idea to solve this. but he finds that he's hesitant to say it because feeling shy. and he's feeling shy because... he's scared of viktor's answer, scared that viktor will refuse, that viktor will reject him. viktor sees jayce being distant the whole day and finally asks during dinner. jayce gathers the courage-and that's a surprise because he hasn't done that in a long time-to say it.

jayce says that he and viktor can share the bed. viktor looks at him surprised. jayce waits nervously. viktor knows that this might be... inappropriate? but he does miss his bed... viktor says yes and jayce is both relieved and strangely excited. they take their baths and go to bed. jayce sees that viktor is tense, reassures him that it'll be ok. viktor shyly nods and climbs in. the bed is already small for jayce so it's not even a tight fit. viktor has to sleep on top of jayce. jayce finds that he doesn't mind it.

viktor is tense until he has to relax because he's fallen asleep. jayce listens to him breath before he falls asleep too. when he wakes up, he's wrapped his arms around viktor. he's holding viktor's nape, had tucked viktor against him and cradling him to his chest like he's something precious. and he is. jayce takes him in. he notes with amusement and his chest aching to burst because it's so full of affection that viktor's drooling in his sleep. jayce wipes it away with his thumb. and it happens, this shock down his spine. jayce looks at his thumb for a moment then brings it to his mouth. he licks viktor's drool off it.

when viktor wakes up, looks up at him blearily, jayce wants to kiss him. on his forehead, on his cheeks, on his mouth. the thought makes jayce breathless. he lets viktor go so he can make breakfast for him and as jayce works, he turns over everything in his mind.

when jayce decides to go back, he tells viktor over dinner. his chest clenches at viktor's sadness. jayce takes his hand and looks into his eyes. he'll come back, jayce promises with utter sincerity. viktor stares at him. he nods slowly, he'll remember that. before jayce goes back, he takes a buckle from his clothes and goes to a forge in the town. he asks the blacksmith if he can borrow it and when the blacksmith says yes, jayce melts the buckle and shapes it into a bracelet.

he presents it to viktor, going down on one knee to present it. this is a proof of his promise! viktor wears it and jayce kisses viktor's knuckles. jayce is pleased about viktor's blush. jayce feels nervous again as he takes viktor in. he wants one thing before he goes. he asks viktor for a kiss. viktor's eyes widened and his blush turns into his whole face being red. he manages to stammer out a yes and jayce's breath rushes out of him in relief. he hold viktor's face in his hands and kisses him. it's a chaste one but it leaves them both breathless.

jayce goes back the next day and viktor watches him disappear into the distance. and jayce arrives, everyone is in a tizzy. they want to know what happened to him, where he had been and who he had possibly met. ximena and caitlyn are overjoyed to see him! they were relieved when his letters started arriving but it's different from actually seeing him. jayce tells them everything, about the ambush, about viktor.

they don't know how to take it at first, this viktor is so young after all. but they see jayce's affection, so clear and his yearning for viktor is so clear too. so they'll let him go, tells him to bring viktor next time so they can meet him. jayce walks around the talis estate, his childhood home but not his home now, takes in the garden and the library and the forge. he thinks about showing it all to viktor. he thinks about kissing viktor in the garden, in the library, in the forge. he thinks about showing viktor his bedroom and kissing him there.

jayce promises his mom and caitlyn hat they'll meet viktor one day and goes to settle his reward. he wants to retire, yes, and he will but he also wants other things. like riches maybe because it's what he's owed and because it adds to the talis family fortune and a part of it can be for viktor. and he wants land too maybe. because he thinks of viktor's cottage and maybe he can rebuild it to be better, build it bigger with a better and bigger bed and a bigger barn and even a silo and finally a library and workshop for them both. a fitting marriage house.

jayce settles everything. his rewards and retirement, forges a promise ring and makes space in the family book for viktor's name and finally... a chest filled with all sorts of things, duvets, blankets, books, plates and cutlery, coats and seeds. this is his dower. and after everything is done and ready, jayce goes back home. he has a betrothed to make happy after all!

- Crosshair is a whiny cunt. I'm sorry but he is, he never stops complaining and he makes it everyone's problem

- Wrecker is also whiny, but its okay because he hardly gets sick so when he goes down he GOES DOWN.

- ^^ and he's like a superspreader so he gives it to everyone

- Hunter avoids it 70% of the time but when he does get sick he gets ear infections, it's really sad and he has a really bad sick voice

- Echo doesn't get sick. Ever. No one had ever seen him sick before ever- not even when he was with the domino's. Dude is just immune????

- Tech gets sick. He says he doesn't and then he does and then he CRASHES.

- ^^ he sleeps a lot when he's sick

- Echo tried to quarantine them when they were sick on a long mission, and instead of it actually working, the rest of them dropped like flies and Echo had to get them to a medi centre.

- one time Hunter contracted this HORRIBLE chicken-pox like virus and gave it to EVERYONE- even Echo got it.

- wrecker runs EXTREMELY hot when he's sick, it leads to a lot of bad times but good for Crosshair and Hunter, who are cold as ice when they're ill, so they all snuggle up

- kinda a sad one, but Crosshair tends to not eat when he's sick because he's scared of throwing up. He's also scared of watching others throw up. And it's all Wrecker does when he's sick

- it's the worst because sometimes when Tech gets sick, Hunter and Echo have to make him throw up to get whatever it is he caught out of him

Outpatient

Ok, hmm, I have 3 - 5 brains cells back to work. This has been a strange day.

When I went into the surgery center, the person leading me down the hallway introduced herself; "Hi, I'm Kelly, I'll be with you the whole time you're here."

Honestly, between a lifetime of farm veterinary emergencies and the whole Childbearing Thing, I am pretty darned nonchalant about medical care. I'm not worried. But it's sweet when someone tries to make me feel 'better'. I just roll with it. It's the thought that counts.

She got me settled in a dentist's chair and started all the minutia of prep; the sticky electrodes on my arms, the blood pressure cuff, the little finger-clamp-thingee. She gave me a small cup of versed, explaining that it would calm me down. Not necessary, my learnéd friend, Kelly, but I'll take it. Gimmee.

Then we had to do the little "why are you even here" dance. Apparently, Mandibular tori are often small and not an issue. Often. Not always. When they turn into big honkin' chunks of bone that interfere with eating or hygiene, then they have to go. And every dratblasted dental person I mentioned them to always tried to tell me they're not an issue! Until they look in my actual mouth and say. OH. Uh. Yeah, that's an issue. Grrr.

Next she hooked a nasal cannula over my face for nitrous oxide. That I have never had before, that I can remember, and I was curious if it would make me giddy or giggly. It did not. My head got very quiet inside, though. I was enjoying that, but my silence made the nurses nervous, and they kept asking if I was ok. I was ok. Just suuuuper quiet. And enjoying it.

The surgeon entered the room and he and the nurses did an interesting little call-and-response routine to ensure that I am the correct patient getting the correct surgery on the correct side of the body. Then the IV medi c i n ooooooooOOOPsie - waking up time!

I have never before had so MUCH novocaine that my mouth was still numb 8 hours later. Not complaining; I'm sure I don't want to know what it feels like in there with a chunk of bone cut out. Very odd, though.
