okay, so the thing with wishing we could kudos every chapter of a fic.

i get it, we all want to hit the little like button more than once, it's the easiest way to express our approval/enjoyment/gratitude. i am going to address this to a generic 'you' (hello Y/N!) and assume that 'you' has either never posted fic to ao3 or hasn't posted both oneshots and multichapter works.

hits, kudos, comments, bookmarks. every marker of popularity (which many will interpret as quality) on ao3 is inadvertantly weighted in favour of works with more chapters. no, not longer necessarily, but with more chapters. go and sort a few fandoms by any of those stats and you'll probably be able to spot this trend in action right away.

oneshots are only at the top of a tag (by the default date sorting) once, and even if you re-read it you can only leave one kudos on it.

a multichapter can stay near the top of the update-sorted results for months if you time your chapter drops right, and of course every time someone comes back for the next chapter that's another hit, and being seen more it is more likely to end up with more kudos. you can still only leave one per work, though, which limits the effects to some extent. multichapter works still tend to overall outperform oneshots on stats, and the longer they are the more likely that becomes, but you'll still usually see a couple of oneshots on the first page if you sort that list by kudos.

and a lot of people (percentage unknown) do sort by kudos (or some other stat) and works at the top of 'by kudos' will thus attract more readers and more kudos. so there's an incentive to get as many kudos as you can on your fic, and if cutting it up into 250 chapters will help... well it already does, and that's had an effect whether writers will admit to dragging fics out a bit on purpose or not, but imagine if that effect were to become orders of magnitude more intense.

even if you personally prefer longer fics cut into fairly short chapters, you probably don't want to get your 150k epic in chapters of only a 100-300 words, do you? you don't want the oneshot writers to just give up when every page, no matter how they're sorted, is full of 5000-chapter works to the point that readers now riot when asked to read a whole 2000 words in one go. your fave author is now feeling insecure because chapter 12 didn't get as many kudos as the last one did.

and this is why ao3 will never let you leave kudos on every chapter. they're aware that the site already incentivises chaptering works and doing that more than you otherwise might. so you're just going to have to learn to put an emoji heart in the comment box.

I was watching Bdubs’ storage room moving day stream yesterday and one of my favorite interactions with other hermits was him revealing to Doc that you can’t do anything with calcite. Like the amount of disbelief in Doc’s voice was amazing.

I also liked Etho’s suggestion that you should be able to make stairs and slabs (and vertical slabs! And essentially mini blocks!) of any full block in the base game, especially since that one April Fool’s update had it with the cheese block (where you clicked on it to cycle through the options) so we know that it is technically feasible.

And I guess tumblr doesn't give a shit about making this app functional. I still can't download images to my phone after that stupid update (I regret updating this mess, I so regret it!). I searched for tumblr in the app store and lol it says the app won't work on my phone (who would've thought) so now my phone is the problem. And other people have the same error while attempting to download images.

Everything is less and less functional. Google is a huge trash can where you can't find anything except for absolutely useless Al articles and pictures, search options don't work either. Instagram at this point is just a sponsored stream of consciousness, twitter is bots, any art site is Al poop.

Some time ago I saw people were trying to satiate the algorithm monster, now they start to give up, post less because who even looks at their work when it's all hidden under a pile of rubbish. I see less interactions because everyone is tired of everything and it's sad to look at all this.

Picked up the game again to finally dip my toes into the recent dlc. And i forget how much of a cluster fuck my 1st savefile is. Not that it's in a bad state, but it's just too much happening, too much everywhere. And i got nowhere to put new stuff. And it made me very stressed and angy.

Aikoto Moments: Episode Aigis vs The Answer

Finished Episode Aigis, so time to gather what was added & what was removed in comparison to The Answer!

As usual, lots of images and SPOILERS for the entire game below the cut.

I won't be going over the moments that were either still included or left intact, I'll cover that in another post!

Additions

✤ We now have not only an Aikoto Opening, but also an entire song detailing Aigis' feelings after he's gone and throughout Episode Aigis: Disconnected.

✤ We also have a new battle theme, Don't, which focuses on Aigis' feelings during the conflict with SEES all while containing references to her feelings for Makoto ("Only had one wish now it's never gonna come true. Trapped in time, forever in remorse, how could I ever be in peace when nothing else matters to me?")

✤ We get a new cutscene with Aigis' reaching out for Makoto during her awakening.

✤ A new comment from Metis that shares some insight about how Aigis feels at being the Leader instead of Makoto.

✤ When Metis describes the fulfilment she feels whenever Aigis gifts her something, players have the option to let Aigis reply "I think I understand." If they do, they will get this dialogue from Metis.

✤ There's an added line after Mitsuru tries to explain why Yukari has been feeling jealous of Aigis.

✤ Aigis' Trophy is named after her dream of chasing after Makoto.

✤ Aigis now reaches out for Shadow!Makoto when he dissolves before their eyes.

✤ We get two dictionary entries involving Aikoto.

✤ Unlike in the original game, this time Aigis' possible fate is kept from SEES. Selfless as she is, Aigis says she doesn't want them to worry about her when they're focused on Makoto.

✤ After Aigis' awakens to her powers, she is under the impression that reaching the Answer to Life could mean her death. This is the same in The Answer as well, but Episode Aigis adds a new comment from Aigis during her confrontation with Metis showing just how indifferent she has become to her own life. She truly lost her reason to live when she lost Makoto :(

✤ The first line has always been in The Answer, but Aigis saying that she wouldn't willingly put Metis through what she went through herself after losing Makoto is new.

✤ Since the SEES confrontation is now handled differently, some lines are added and some are rearranged. Among the additions is Yukari questioning Aigis' feelings for Makoto, which leads Aigis to reaffirm them before she fights her.

✤ In The Answer, Aigis says that she understands Yukari's feelings. Here, she outright says that she wants him back too.

✤ We get two new shots of the rooftop scene during the Erebus cutscene.

✤ There are a few new lines during the ending, including one where Yukari says Aigis' must have inherited Makoto's power because she's the one most like him.

✤ While this scene is the same in The Answer, this time we're properly shown Aigis' tears 😭

✤ This time around, there are fully visible cherry blossom petals blowing past Aigis as she stands on the rooftop, yet another reference to those last moments she spent with him.

✤ During the ending sequence, we see Aigis looking back over her shoulder as she walks through the Moonlight Bridge (the place that started it all for her and Makoto). Lastly, cherry blossoms welcome her when she reaches the school.

Omissions

✤ Aigis awakening to Orpheus is handled differently. This time we only see Makoto's back (like in Aigis' dream), instead of Makoto smiling at her (in a clear parallel to Makoto's own awakening to Orpheus).

✤ This Elizabeth line seems to be gone. Or at least, I didn't get it.

✤ This heartbreaking game over screen is gone, too :(

✤ In The Answer, when Yukari talks about her promise to Makoto, she explicitly compares it to Aigis' by saying "It wasn't a promise like yours...". Here instead of comparing them, they have Yukari clarify that her promise wasn't made to Makoto, but to herself:

✤ This line below is replaced by Aigis saying that she, too, wants Makoto back.

✤ The lines below were replaced as well:

✤ As she finally breaks down in The Answer, Aigis says that she thinks she's finally at peace with losing him. She no longer says it in Episode Aigis.

✤ The original credits begin with Aigis and end with Makoto (a parallel to the credits of The Journey, which begin with Makoto and end with Aigis), but Makoto was removed all-together from the credits in Episode Aigis :(

UHH REMINDER ALSO SINCE I HAVE BEEN SHARING A LOT MORE NEGATIVE THINGS LATELY that amid literally everything that's been going on, there are still things that you can do to retain control in your life in at least some areas!! not everyone can actively protest right now, not everyone has the means and that is OKAY! do what you can when you can!!

this post is a wall of text of me rambling about things you can do Right Now in your community or to keep yourself happy and motivated and going. it's a long one so it's going under read more. I also talk a lot more in the tags

i also use terms like Current Events a lot so I also apologize for the vagueness in some places!! I do not know if this will get flagged if I get more specific and my account has tried to go down twice now

#1: BONDING WITH YOUR COMMUNITY (WITH PERSONAL SAFETY IN MIND)

getting involved in your local community is a big big big thing I've seen talked about lately and I agree with that entirely!! the #1 best thing I feel like anyone can do right now is either volunteering at local support groups or getting involved in local activism

if you have a local community you can connect with for whatever reason then that's absolutely a good idea for both practical and emotional reasons. it can be for anything really, actually. reach out to friends, reach out to family, keep talking to people if you have the energy! it really does make a difference!

^ related to the above, if you can involve yourself in volunteer work, or mutual aid, or just helping others out in some other way, then absolutely do that! you can start with asking around, or searching up aid or other groups that may need extra help in your area, and go from there!!

I see a lot of people have been saying for months to organize and then absolutely no one ever explains how to organize, and if you don't plan on starting something up Yourself that is how you get involved. you find like minded people and you lend your hands. I just looked up "volunteers needed/mutual aid [insert town here]" and went off of that

and there are a lot of different places people might need assistance for. one example being food banks, pantries, are basically always accepting new donations -- if you have produce, not all of them will accept it due to safety regulations, but a local community garden might! libraries also will exchange more than books, and protecting libraries by showing involvement and interest in them is important now more than ever

local businesses, emergency aid if you have the certification, environmental work and disaster cleanup, assisted living areas, shelters, a lot of other specific areas I can't name right now. if you are physically able to seek out support and give back in turn (and if you aren't able to do one or both of these that's also okay!!) i highly highly recommend it. mutual aid especially goes both ways. do not be afraid to reach out for help, that is what they're there for

speaking of libraries!

#2: KEEP INFORMED

this can refer to a lot of different things, but on a federal and local level it is never ever ever a bad thing to keep up to date with what's going on. anyone trying to do bad things on a government level is relying on you not noticing or staying uninformed in the invent that you do notice. keep track of what's going on in your area and plan accordingly!!

keeping up with the news (and fact checking, always, because journalism isn't always ethically practiced), finding where your local city hall or equivalent is and staying up to date on local legislation, has always been important for safety and especially is right now. know how to determine a reliable source from an unreliable one, and know how to pick apart the difference between fact and misconstrued ideas spoken as fact. I'll probably make a post on that too at some point and link it here when I'm done

it is overwhelming to hear just how much is getting worse so quickly, but it's crucial that you don't allow yourself to become unaware, because that makes you easier to lie to. you do not have to work yourself to burnout or to a breakdown, please take breaks whenever you need to and put your own health first!!

but don't do yourself the disservice of not knowing what's happening around you. I want everyone to be as safe as they can, and to be safe you have to be informed

#3: FIND SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO (AND ALSO KEEP CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE EVEN IF IT'S IN SMALL WAYS)

staying up to date on current events has been overwhelming for me, but it also has helped me to maintain a sense of control in my life. and there are a lot of other ways to do that, too, and also give you sources of happiness and things to still look forward to! I'm listing what works for me but I'm sure there's infinitely more ways to pull that off

taking up or getting back into hobbies or interests is a very effective way to keep joy in your life, and this goes double if you're sort of stuck in your house like I am most days. you should get to do things that make you happy!! you deserve to still have things to look forward to!!!

I've also been personally using my interests to try to learn how to do more practical things that might help me and the people I live with; I'm a gardener so I've been working on trying to grow food, starting with sweet peppers. don't know if I'll end up needing that one day (or if my neighbors might, but as the economy completely fucks itself it could get very useful very fast), but having the knowledge and the means helps me feel more in control of what happens in my personal life, and it really has made me feel better and have a source of hope

I really hope that everyone who sees this is doing as well as they're able right now. saying all of this because I don't want to contribute to any ideas of complete hopelessness, if that makes sense. there are things worth getting up in the morning for and every one of you matters and you deserve to be happy. and I love you /p

even if you aren't utilizing your hobbies in that way (again, PERFECTLY fine, do what you need to forever), something like that might be useful for you, too! you can learn new skills or read up on all those things you already wanted to look into but kept putting off, you can carve out a little space in your world for Joy and for Whimsy if you don't have one already! it's good for you!! it's incredible in fact!!
