Choosing color as an intentional symbolic vehicle is probably the easiest, most obvious way to incorporate symbolism into a story. But it can still provide some amazing opportunities.

For example, in my story, blue is supposed to be the color of conservatism and toxic masculinity, and red is the color of liberation. It's kind of like the opposite of the usual blue = good, red = bad thing that a lot of pop culture has going on. But purple isn't a symbol for centrism. It's for queerness, which sort of lines itself in with red.

Now, here's the thing; I'm VERY serious about the symbolic implications of... Everything. And this includes the seemingly mundane task of dressing yourself.

So even though there's a character that doesn't have a huge role in the story, and could technically do without, I've kept her in mostly so that I have the chance to design a character with a purple and blue color pallette. Because she's queer, but she shills for conservative news outlets and pursues a cisheteronormative lifestyle as closely as she can, in public at least, and that's the perfect way to encapsulate her character's contradictions.

So even though it seems like a shallow, style-over-substance detail... Well, here, the style kind of /is/ the substance.

i get so emotional when i see toys in museums because how many children played with it before it ended up here? was it someone’s favorite toy? are those cracks from time or from a child loving it too hard? did a child cling to it in the night when they were afraid? there’s so much love stored in them but now they sit behind glass in museums where no one can touch them, when their sole purpose was to be touched and loved. do they wonder why no one loves them anymore?
