as soon as he had heard his dad’s voice, sachiro shut his laptop down and wiped the faint tears on his eyes. “yes, dad?”

satoru appeared by his door, utterly oblivious to a past controversy his son had just come across. “you wanna play polo today?”

“no, thanks.” the teenage son looked away with a sigh before flopping down his bed. he was feeling all sulky, and he doesn’t really know how to deal with his father right now.

while that father in question, on the other hand, was surprised at the unusual mood of his son. is this his rebellious stage? he mused.

“everything okay, buddy?” satoru asked, now leaning on his side against the doorframe. “you said you wanted to play when i have free time.”

the younger gojou rolled his eyes and buried his face with a pillow. “well, i clearly don’t want to anymore,” he bit back in exasperation, “just get out, dad.”

satoru wasn’t sure if his son was going through a heartbreak or if he’s just generally moody today, but he could tell something was off and he was becoming increasingly worried. sachiro had never rejected their weekly father-son dates before, so there was certainly a reason behind that dismissive attitude.

and satoru recognized that very well, because his son got it from him.

“did i do something wrong?” asked satoru, “you can always tell dad.”

sachiro, after some contemplation, finally caved in by swinging the pillow out of his face to sit up and look at his current enemy. his storm blue eyes were of the same exact hues as his father’s. “why did you cheat on my mom?”

dear lord, satoru thought as his he held his breath in front of an angry son. the day has finally come.

feel free to ignore if you've been asked this before, but do all the starwake system have their own internal world appearances that differ from the bodies?

Hello Anonstar, thank you so much for sending this question in! I've thought of this aspect a lot with the Starwake System, and going over specifically the main Starwake alters ( Micah, Phoebus, Philos, and Phobos ), I can say that Philos and Phobos have the most differences to their inner world appearances than their shared external body, whereas Phoebus and especially Micah shares most similarities with the body.

For those who don't know what internal worlds is, internal / inner worlds are visualized mental space where the alters manifest in and interact with when they are not fronting. ( Internal worlds are not objectively real, so some subjective experiences of them may not be as concrete as they feel while many internal occurrences may be metaphorical or highly symbolic. )

( Starwake's common external looks, left to right : Micah, Phoebus, Philos, Phobos )

The illustration shared are the main appearances that the aforementioned Starwakers appear as in the external ( real ) world if they are fronting / in control of the body at a longer duration of time ( half a day to a week, usually ) or in certain circumstances, such as attending to social events that will usually need Philos to be part of handling them or while in therapy sessions that often Micah or Phobos wouldn't be able to stay throughout. Because Micah is usually the one fronting to manage day to day activities and common personal businesses, the Starwake System's external appearance with the hairstyle, attire, accessory and item usage is often Micah's that people will note of.

In most cases when Phoebus or Philos take the body's control if Micah can no longer be present and mentally shut down, distress or sensory overload being few of the examples, they will imitate xyr personality and demeanor so that the interacted individual won't suspect that Micah have " changed " and was present the whole time. Micah can not impersonate from xem feeling guilty pretending to be someone else, although can try if it's strictly for protecting the system, and Phobos can never be able to impersonate others when it's extremely reactive and intense, as well as it doesn't care to engage in secretive behaviours and have deceitful intentions for the sake of system's safety when it wants itself to be known for the purposes of intimidation and provoking wanted negative responses. But each Starwaker have their own distinct personality, demeanor, mindset, mannerism, and speech that people can be able to differentiate from each other despite them having a specific external look, especially if they've known the main Starwakers for a good period of time.

Micah and Phoebus are thought to be the longest existing alters of the Starwake System, the latter coming into existence just five years when their mind fragmented due to consistent pain and distress from abuse and neglect that Micah experienced. Originally, the body had a bit more typical feminine sex features than masculine as it's intersex. Micah experienced body dysphoria so xe had xyr inner appearance be more masculine or androgynous until xe could make external changes when reaching in teenhood, such as having shorter hair, deeper voice, top surgery, etcetera. Micah have always wished to have those magical / celestial features like having glowy eyes and leaving stars behind xyr footsteps, which was something the body does have once reconnecting with their cosmic origins, so Micah's internal body have these along with wings from xyr interest in flight and travelling across space. Phoebus have always been content with their external body, so ae didn't alter much of aer inner appearance, and still doesn't other than making aemself a bit taller ( 5'11" to 6'2" ) and have a different hairstyle that would make aem appear more serious and mature.

Philos and especially Phobos have the weakest connection with their external body. Philos doesn't like to feel bounded to and be perceived by only a single appearance, as proven with how she have a high interest in cosmetics and acting ( taking upon different personas ), as well as vast diverse of attires and items usage so she could have more to explore her external appearance with. Therefore, Philos does change his inner world appearance a lot from being more feminine, masculine, or androgynous appearing; having different hairstyles, heights, and body shapes, and so forth. Phobos is the most detached with their external body as it doesn't like to be perceived as a figure, especially of a human when it holds deep distrust and anger towards humanity for everything that it had done to itself and the Starwake System since childhood, hence, its internal appearance leans on having prominent inhuman / monstrous / animalistic features such as glowing eyes, tails, horns, sharper teeth and claws, etcetera. At times, Philos and Phobos feel more as an animal, so they'd appear as a lion or wolf, or having features of them while in humanoid form at the internal world.

There are some side Starwakers who also have their own specific inner appearances, such as Mike being the body's past teenage appearance and Mimi's as a child or rainbow coloured star depending on her mood. Mx. Moon, a caregiver of the system, have glowy eyes and crescent moon as a halo. Dante Break, an introject alter after Micah's famous character xe created and acted as, have glitch based aesthetics, so xyr appearance changes in every aspects upon each glance or moment with glitches around xem. Overall, some Starwake alters are completely content or neutral with appearing the same as the external body, some don't and have entire different looks in the internal world. It may feel awkward and strange if two or more alters have similar appearances, like how Micah used to feel flustered that xe and Phoebus internally looked as their external body, especially when they they planned to enter a romantic relationship, but everyone have their own interests comforts to their appearances that will take time, respect, and patience adjusting and familiarizing with each other's looks.

Okay I have enough fics and shit to write right now as it is, I currently have 4 in the works 🙃, but last night while I was trying to sleep I had a thought. I think I came up with a very baseline very bare bones idea for a possible OUAD 2.

A possible title for which I came up with was Once Upon A Kingdom OUAK if you will. And literally as I typed this out, Once Upon A Winter OUAW akskskskk and it would take place months after the events of OUAD, Chazz and Atticus are officially a couple now, and Atty takes him on a trip to see the Northern Kingdom or the Crystal Kingdom if ur in with the OUAD deep lore 👀 where he and Lexi are from and with Jay, Sy, and Hassleberry in tow, winter wonderland hijinks and capers ensue 👀

Now I have no idea what the actual greater plot would be but I really like the idea of visiting another kingdom since in the 'deep lore' there are 5 kingdoms that exist in the world, but since the Kingdom of the East was canonically destroyed by Slade and Jagger before the events of OUAD, there's still 3 other kingdoms outside the Golden Kingdom. The northern, western, and southern kingdoms if you will. The Golden Kingdom is the central kingdom. So we get to see more of the world, and open the door for more of the ensemble cast to get involved, I fully intend to include Jesse and Bastion at the very minimum if I wrote this I fully imagined a whole conversation with Jaden and Jesse last night, immortal magical fairy Jay gets to flirt with the cute human boy 👀 so I have thoughts happening ☺

Like I said I have no idea what an actual greater plot would look like yet and I have way too much to work on right now to put too much thought into it right now, but I promise babes. OUAD 2 may be on the back burner right now, but it is also very firmly on the table 😉

We got a short mission chapter today that takes place prior to the gala!

For some reason, the English version has Anya calling Damian by his actual name in this panel, something I don't think she's done before. But in the original Japanese version, she's still calling him "Sy-on Boy." Both of them calling the other by their actual name seems like a big step in their relationship, so it's weird that the English version did this...maybe it was just an unintentional mistake.

Who was Martha's boyfriend indeed? I don't know but maybe his initials are H.H.

I love that Anya wanted to pick a dress that resembles Yor's ❤️ Also her taking all the "killing" expressions literally was hilarious, such an Anya thing to do!

After the previous chapter, there was so much fan art of Anya practicing dancing with Loid...and it actually ended up being canon!

Nice to see Yor and Bond again, it's been a while...poor Bond though! First he gets stepped on, then wet. At least that wasn't a scalding hot drink!

I like that Loid offered to clean up the spill for Yor. Also that he brings up Plan C again - still waiting for that to become a plot point again!

Happy March, everyone! It took me a while to make this post because I don't really have a lot of news to share at the moment.

I've paused my for-fun reread of SVSSS (stopped at the beginning of the Airplane Extras) because I have to work on my MXTX Remix fic now. That will be finished by the end of the month and up in early April. I have a few one shots on back burners, as always, but I'm not actively planning to post any of them this month.

The most exciting news is possibly that I now have digital copies of the SVSSS books (English translation) so that I can reference them wheneeeeever I want. I'm hoping that this will improve my writing workflow for a lot of my fics! I often like to write with my notes document up side-by-side with my writing document, and this is going to make making notes documents sooooo much easier. I can just copy-paste the quotes I need now! I'm unstoppable.

I think I've really been needing this for "Sit With Your Soul", my SY & SJ Daemon AU, which I have been chipping away at very slowly for way too long now. I really needed an easier way to reference canon for that, so that I can use it as a stable launch point and do some sick flips and all that jazz.

I'm going to be off-work and busy for a week soon, so I may post more or post less during that time frame. I'm thinking about bringing MDZS with me for a reread (it has been a LONG time) now that I have physical copies of all of the books. It's tempting to bring TGCF instead to finally read the whole thing properly, but that's a LOT of volumes to carry around (CANNOT take both, not about to buy digital copies yet) and there's something appealing about tackling these stories in their proper order.

Their extras hurt my cold dead heart way too much and as much as bbygirl SJ is a piece of shit, Yue Qingyuan deserves happiness, and for that he needs his Xiao-Jiu. Basically YQY does not stay dead when Bingge turns him into a pincushion à la White No Face to Xie Lian except with arrows. What happens from here? Idk didn't get that far but I imagine he steals back his (probably dead) Xiao-Jiu, maybe does some other batshit insane shit like we all know that deep down he's capable of, and the duo fucking COMMUNICATES for once in their life and they live happily ever after. Bonus points for hilarious deaths for Bingge.

- If you're a filthy multishipper like me, want a BingJiu version of the above QiJiu? Easy, SJ decides to haunt Bingge's ass for eternity and vice versa when Bingge kicks the bucket and so they spent the rest of eternity trying to make each other miserable in increasingly ridiculous and creative ways. Maybe along the centuries they find a common enemy or sort their shit out and proceed to make their awful existence everyone else's problem. A match made in hell, truly <3

Are you seeing a theme yet. I like a general comedic air to svsss AUs, it just belongs to the svsss experience ya know? Anyway carrying on-

Shen twins, and SQH twins cause why not. If you want Binghe twins too, actually probably funnier with Binghe twins, where one is our beloved maiden Bingmei and the other OG!PIDW Bingge but forced back in time with memories of the PIDW timeline. Transmigrator SQH aka Airplane gets the peak lord + Mobei-Jun plotline while OG!SQH is just chilling as an An Ding Peak Hallmaster or something. Meanwhile, the Shen twins have a funny game of imposter going on. As far as everyone is concerned, there is only one Shen Qingqiu, Shen Yuan. Shen Yuan transmigrated in earlier into the novel, but ended up going to CQM with Yue Qi while SJ got stuck in the Qiu household as in canon. From here the details can change but the main idea is that

A) Shen Yuan knows how to do his peak lord job actually

B) SJ is a calamity ghost, having died either in his disciple years or alternatively never made it out of the Qiu household alive

C) Both SY and SJ have been playing switcheroo when SY needs to head out and do stuff or just wants SJ to do his paperwork for him.

I still need a good reason for the switching and duping, but wouldn't it be funny if the disciples just had to deal with their peak lord behaving WILDLY different at times. Most of the time it's good ol' Shen Yuan smiling at disciples, way too enthusiastic for monsters and plants and keeps forgetting his fans everywhere. Then one random week in the month after he has a resting bitch face, scowls, snarls and bitches at anyone and has 0 patience for teenage attempts at music.

Most shrug it off as just terrible migraine weeks, but some disciples are suspicious, most of all Bingge who is CONVINCED something is WrongTM. Like, he KNOWS SQQ and this SQQ is just so different, something must be different. He doesn't know how right he is yet everyone just thinks he's actually insane.

I know this is probably increasingly insane and dumb, but fast forward to the Abyss opening. SJ was probably there to keep an eye on his clumsy twin, but SY ends up asking the ghost to look over the Luos, as the system still demands that they go to the abyss. So SJ after much grumbling agrees (after all he probably just was unmasked as ghost calamity, and the twins as demons, with a huge amount of cultivators moving their way. It's really the smaller hassle to jump into the Abyss and deal with the horrors there. Besides, the scholar in SJ would be curious about the abyss (and SY too let's be honest) ), kicks both in and goes "Alright we're taking an impromptu field trip" and jumps in after leaving SY to deal with the political mess that comes after.

Anyway, the last AU can be changed in various ways, like make it a PIDW time travel fix it with only the OGs around, or just Shen twins, etc. Feel free to shout at me how dumb this all is.

So, here’s an AU I actually came up with back in February but apparently forgot to post here:

It started by thinking about AUs where SJ and SY are siblings, and how SJ is usually depicted as the overprotective one — so what if it was the other way around?

SY reincarnated as a child who was on the streets with YQY and SJ, and retaining memories of being an adult made him feel responsible for them — their big brother! SJ still ends up being taken by the Qius and SY tries to rescue him (not sure exactly how that plays out yet except that he’s the one to kill QJL and it’s when he realises that SJ is actually SQQ and that he’s in PIDW).

SY is the one who actually becomes Peak Lord though, with SJ acting as his second-in-command. Even though he’s pretty different to the original, due to having a lot less trauma and a lot more support (although he’s still a bit of a jerk sometimes), SQQ still worries that the original plot will assert itself once LBH comes along, and he doesn’t want his little brother suffering like that, so he comes up with a plan — just keep them as far apart from each other as he can. Unfortunately he’s still got a System so he can’t just put LBH on another peak…

When Luo Binghe first becomes a disciple, he notices pretty quickly that things that are… weird. He becomes a favoured disciple almost immediately even though his shizun is known for being a bit uncaring for his disciples and dismissive of some of them at what seems like random. He hears that SQQ has a younger brother that’s almost never seen — he teaches a few classes, but LBH gets personal lessons from his shizun instead of attending them.

One evening he comes across SJ playing music in a bamboo grove and starts talking to him. SJ doesn’t even seem to know who he is, so his worry that SQQ was keeping him away because he had offended his brother somehow seems to be unfounded… Then SQQ shows up suddenly and he’s angry… but at SJ? LBH doesn’t really want to be the cause of a fight or even around, but SJ seems just as confused as he is.

SQQ is panicking because they’re interacting! He was trying to avoid that! Unfortunately for him, both of them have now realised that there’s something weird going on with him, and as the two people who spend the most time with him, shouldn’t they work together to figure out what it is?

(SQQ saves LQG, SJ fights the second match during the demon invasion, SQQ doesn’t step in to save LBH from Without-A-Cure because he knows he’ll be fine).

In the aftermath, SJ is the one who gets pulled into LBH’s dreamscape and meets Meng Mo, and after that he realises pretty quickly that LBH must be part demon when he asks him if all demons are evil. He also puts the dots together about SQQ not stepping in with Without-A-Cure… he knows LBH is part demon as well, and based on some of his other odd actions, might have some knowledge of the future which could explain his odd actions.

Of course, they don’t know what that future is, only that it seems to be the reason that SQQ doesn’t want the two of them interacting. As a result, LBH starts to feel a bit paranoid about SQQ— is he just being nice because of the future he saw? Is it just an attempt to manipulate him?

So, the IAC is coming up, and SQQ knows that LBH has to go into the abyss and between him and SJ he knows it has to be him who does it (he doesn’t consider that SJ might not do it at all). So, SY asks the ‘would you be willing to face great hardship to become powerful’ question and LBH, knowing that SQQ knows the future, guesses that something is going to go very wrong with the IAC.

Obviously it does, although at least they’re able to be a little prepared for it — SJ is the first one to find LBH when the conference is attacked. Like in canon, MBJ shows up, and there’s a fight, although SJ does a lot better because he doesn’t have a poison holding him back. But in the end, as is his fate in (almost) every timeline, LBH ends up falling into the Abyss anyway.

SQQ comes across the scene at the exact moment the Abyss closes.

SQQ is too focused on what happened in PIDW to see that SJ actually kind of liked LBH, and is upset about loosing him, and ends up attacking him with accusations of pushing LBH in, of being jealous of the time LBH spent with him, of wanting him to fail. Blinded by his own expectations, he only sees the worst in SJ, and it drives a wedge between them that will take years to fix.

When the Hills Are All Flat, and the Rivers Run Dry - yet another royalty AU. This one features fem!Wei Wuxian as a bridal candidate for emperor Lan Wangji, who would rather leave governing to his very capable older sister (LXC) and spend his time caring for A-Yuan instead. ;-;

A Wife by Any Other Name - a post Bingge vs. Bingmei fic where Bingge finds a version of Shen Yuan in his own universe eleven years after crossing paths with SY!SQQ in SVSSS. But unlike the version of Shen Qingqiu he met in SV's universe, this Shen Yuan is over a hundred years old, not as easily impressed as a twenty-year-old freshly transmigrated SY might be, and hiding much more about himself than Bingge guesses...

ahhh honestly it is way too hard to pick out all time favorites, there's just way too much good food in this fandom!! so here's a few qualified favorites, if that makes sense... !!

favorite recently discovered fic "says the shadow" by tciddaemina: when sy transmigrates, it isn't a simple soul possession - sy is an eldritch being that puppets sqq's body while still lingering outside of sqq's body too, invisible to everyone… except for lbh. although lbh starts off terrified of the horrifying spectre that's taken over sqq, over time he begins to love him. after all, lbh can see and hear all the things the spectre does, and since sy doesn't think anyone can see him, he is constantly using his multitude of arms to pet at lbh's head, and muttering to himself about how good lbh is

favorite currently ongoing fic "In the Red" by ibex_ascendant: bingge reverse transmigrates and buys out sy's debts so he can have some control over sy's life, all while hiding his identity as "luo binghe" from sy. i know i just recc'd this fic for another prompt on this ask game, but i really mean it 🙈 the way bingge is written as so awful and yet still so deeply pathetic... hghnhh.

favorite comfort reread fic (oneshot) "Critical point" by mamiser: lbh, raised by huan hua and taught to hate cqm, ends up working with sqq on a mission. this leads to lbh struggling to recognize that he was only taught cruelty and lies by huan hua, including lies about his own self.

favorite comfort reread fic (multichapter) "Tongfang" by The Feels Whale: canon divergence where sy is the well off young master of a household that binghe is sent to work for during some off seasons of cang qiong's training. working as young master shen's personal servant quickly shifts binghe's career goal from "cultivator" to "bride."

Luo Binghe is a scary motherfucker. Shen jiu could have treated this man kindly and he'd get be chased down obsessively he treated him canonically like scum and yet he can't get his shizun out of his head. Bro... I know many say it's because he's got grievances against his Shizun becauses of the mistreatment and abuse he experienced at the peak but Bingge goes way to far to even count as a victim because at the extent of the torture he did it's beyond a victim wanting justice but a maniac it's goes way past that. Who craves their teacher affection if they had Shen jiu as their instructor most would stop but he still wanted it. It can't be anyone affection it's why SY being in the original host body makes sense because it kind of traces back to a lot of issues and Shen jiu the center of that. If the system is there to grant happiness for Binghe I think lol then his desires are in SQQ. Like i've seen stories of Shen Yuan being in other character bodies but like ultimately it's not really SY kindness to the MC that sets him apart because we have countless wife characters that already fulfill the role like Ning Yingying it's not really the lack of love but really the love he wanted from the original host and Shen jiu got the boot.

Logically, Binghe is a scary dude. A whole yandere that desires his shizun like no other. I don't think Shen jiu was that dumb he's probably aware if the taunts he makes to him got his tongue ripped off. I don't think it's the abuse that made him go haywire but the fact he was always rejected by Shen jiu himself. Like the difference between SY and SJ was one accepted the affection and the other didn't.

Like people could say oh if only SJ could have treated this boy sweetly but bro he wouldn't let the dude go ever. Whether he treated this dude as scum below his feet or treated him lovingly in his arms his fate is tied to this dude because in either situation he's end up in Binghe hands regardless. Shen jiu experiences a lot of shit in the manor he was enslaved at and was sexually implied to be abused by Qiu Jian Luo who hated his disobedience. Who's to say he wasn't aware of the child attention on him and he wanted to quell that shit down.

Even when confronted with someone like Shizun, he shouldn't be overly concerned about finding a replacement, especially considering the negative memories associated with it, particularly with SQQ. If he truly harbored hatred and contempt, he wouldn't desire someone similar to take his place. However, it's possible that in the past, he admired Shizun and believed they could start anew. Typically, intense emotions like rage and revenge preclude the possibility of reconciliation, as one is repulsed by their adversary. Yet, it's conceivable that he didn't truly despise Shizun, and perhaps never harbored genuine hatred. Instead, he sought revenge against the person he loved, who had rejected him, aiming to maintain exclusive attention post-Abyss through various nefarious means. It's feasible for someone to be consumed by revenge while still harboring love for the individual, even if they refuse to acknowledge it. I wonder if the act of reducing Shizun to a mere figure might not only be to prevent escape but also to ensure he never leaves Bingge's side again.

Happy anniversary, VII

I cannot believe it's been a whole year since I posted VII. I wrote and posted it at a pretty dark time for me, and figured it'd be a weird little oneshot that some people might like but would ultimately just kind of. exist.

That is not what happened. I'm still overwhelmed by the response it got. To the folks who loved it and left such wonderful comments, you will never know how much that mattered to me -- and still matters to me. And to everyone who has shared their love for the sequel or helped build that world with me, thank you all so, so much. It's been so fun and such a thrill to see your reactions and your support for my codependent trauma buddies.

I was really hoping to have a new chapter of A long, hard road to post today, but the brain is just not braining right now. Fingers crossed for March 19 (the anniversary of ALHR)!

You can’t honestly say you find him attractive.” Harry mutters something under his breath that sounds a little too much like, “Oh, can’t I?” for his friends’ tastes. “Is this some problematic holdover of your infatuation with the diary horcrux?” Hermione asks as Harry sputters and turns bright red. “No!” he shouts. And, after a suspicious delay, “And I wasn’t ‘infatuated’ with the diary!” Ron and Hermione both give him a look at that. Traitors. “Psychologists would fight to the death for the chance to sort through all your issues, Harry.” “Sy-ko-wha?” “Good to know if I ever decide to hold gladiatorial contests,” Harry says dryly. The topic of conversation dies out for a couple minutes before Ron turns back to Harry and looks him dead in the eye. “So, given the chance – you would bang the snake-man?” Hermione puts her head in her hands and regrets several life choices. Harry sighs. “Like a screen door in a hurricane.” Ron chokes on air.  “Harry!” “He asked!”

Trying to tease out any ideas about SY’s life pre-canon is so tricky because you have to sort of choose a point on the sliding scale between the two basic reasons for SQQ completely blocking out the ‘Shen Yuan’ identity:

His previous life was bad/painful and he wants to forget it in favor of the new one

His previous life was good and it’s painful to remember what he can never have back

It’s unlikely that the truth lies at either extreme, but the little information we have makes it hard to determine which way the scale tips.

On the one hand, it’s clear that SQQ disdains SY on some level. He lacks ambition; he’s a “useless pretty boy waiting around to die.” His isolated, chronically-online lifestyle is profoundly unfulfilling, and he blames himself for it (although the audience has reason to believe this is not an entirely accurate self-assessment, hence the neurodivergence/invisible illness theories).

It makes sense that he would attach himself more strongly to the identity that he sees as having more substance; pre-canon, he mostly ‘lives’ online and therefore retains ties to the ‘Peerless Cucumber’ identity after transmigrating. So far, this all seems pretty cut and dry.

But on the other hand, there’s Shen Yuan’s family. Now, I see no reason to disbelieve the three straightforward facts we’re presented with on this subject: that one of his older brothers was warm and attentive, like YQY; that he doted on his younger sister (and read her kinky danmei); and that he didn’t have the same obligation to excel as his brothers because he didn’t have to inherit the family business.

However, if they were all as close as he claims, why doesn’t he seem to mourn them? After pushing LBH into the Abyss, SQQ “doesn’t mourn” but it’s obvious from everyone’s reactions that he really fucking does. In contrast, there aren’t many signs in the first book that he’s secretly struggling with the grief of never seeing his loved ones again.

Are these relationships so ultimately insignificant/unfulfilling that he can easily cast them off right along with the concept of ‘Shen Yuan’? Are they more fraught/bittersweet than he is willing to acknowledge (and is this related to why we get no particular details about his parents or second brother)? Or is feeling of loss so powerful that he can’t even allow himself to contemplate or allude to it, can only cling to this new identity that never had a family to lose?

SY!SQQ’s “true self” is Shen Qingqiu. And in that sense, an identity reveal really isn’t that important, because it wouldn’t change anything about how the other characters should understand him. But if you view the narrative as shaped behind the scenes by a hidden yet pervasive grief inextricably tied to Shen Yuan’s history, then that history and that self become relevant to his present and future.

As notable as it is that he opted to go by his internet handle in the mushroom body, I think it’s also somewhat symbolic that the physical form he grew for himself was a combination of Shen Yuan and Shen Qingqiu’s features. And that while these three identities (SY, SQQ, Cucumber) were integrated into a single self, he was stronger than any of them individually.

Just some food for thought.

In a world where the spotlight fades and the laughter echoes emptily, lies the tale of resilient spirits finding solace and purpose under the canvas of a traveling circus. These smiling critters, once disparate souls, now weave a tapestry of camaraderie amidst the neglect of their props, the decay of their food, and the echoing silence of the empty stands.

Their ringmaster, a figure of cruelty veiled in showmanship, lords over them like a dark cloud, siphoning their hard-earned coins for his vices, leaving them with little but shattered dreams and bitter disillusionment. Yet, amidst the ruins of their hopes, they persist. With over thirty determined souls, they toil tirelessly, supplementing their meager earnings with side jobs, scraping together every penny in a desperate bid to salvage their tarnished circus. But fate, it seems, has other plans. Their efforts are dashed, their dreams shattered, as their treacherous ringmaster absconds with their savings, leaving them stranded and forsaken at desolate train stations, their spirits hanging by a thread.

Just when all seems lost, a beacon of hope emerges. A man , garbed in resplendent ringmaster attire, approaches them with outstretched arms and a promise of redemption. His own circus troupe having disbanded, he seeks to breathe new life into their weary souls, offering them a chance to join him under the canopy of his enchanted circus. It's a leap of faith, a gamble against the odds,

but in the depths of their despair, they find themselves drawn to this man who weaves tales of magic and wonder. And so, with hesitant hearts and trembling hands, they take their first step into a world where the impossible reigns supreme, where dreams take flight on wings of stardust, and where, perhaps, they will find the family they've longed for amidst the flickering lights of the circus tent.

(so first I am behind on Side Story so apologies if I have a specific fact of the canon incorrect but this has been rattling around in my head for so long and I must yELL or else I will explode)

I am just. Thinking. About the tragedy of a regressor who’s forced to choose to send one of his companions back to warn him about the future.

Cuz like. Logically. At some point in the multiverse. There was a timeline to start with no 41st sys coming to warn yjh about the future. And yjh was alone and regressing and just trying to save as many people as possible. He has a plan for the Minor Group, he’s made deals with Anna Croft so she’ll give some of his prior allies their memories back… but in his mind, he’s on his own.

I dont know quite yet the circumstances of how sys was first sent back, but I do know that it completely changed the course of yjh’s past regressions - those bootprints of story that ended abruptly and jumped to a new path. And after that, there was never a 42nd round yjh who hadn’t spend the previous 40 rounds confronting a grown sys as the Disaster of Floods.

From ORV, we know how sys reacts to yjh in the 2nd regression - she expects that the information she gave would be enough to get yjh through to the end. Part of the reason she’s so furious with 1864th yjh is that his existence here at all meant that her sacrifice meant nothing. It hadn’t been enough to get him through to the end. And if that wasn’t enough, this version of yjh has someone only one month into the scenarios that he is willing to call a companion. 41st sys fought beside yjh for a decade, and he never once called her that, not until the very very end.

Imagine yjh confronting this enraged and emotionally shattered sys. In his original 3rd round. And then in his 4th. And his 5th. “How could you say such a thing? To my face?” His 6th. “Jihye-ssi. You have no idea how Joonghyuk-ssi is going to take advantage of you, then abandon you.” 8th. “Do you know what he said when you died? ‘I guess naval battles will be more difficult from now on.’” 10th. “Hyunseong-ssi. Joonghyuk’s loyal dog.” 13th. “‘I guess I’ve lost a handy shield.’” 17th. “What about me and the others?” 20th. “What about the people that fought for you?” 25th. “What were we to you?” 31st. “It’s too late for you to change like that.” 38th. “I won’t let you.” 39th. “It’s all because of how you lived that I…” 40th. “that my friends…”

How might it affect you, knowing that you would become the person sys spoke of? knowing that you’d take in a child, spend a decade watching her grow into her power, and then send her away to face thousands of years of solitude? Would you be able to look her in the eyes and ask for her trust? Or would it be easier for her to see you only as her harsh and emotionless leader. And what about after she’s gone? You already know that the information she had wasn’t enough to save the world. But it was enough to get you this far, right? And what would have happened if you didn’t have that information?

So you have to send her back.

And you know it’s coming. And so you prepare for it. You learn to accept loss as a fact of your life. You place emotional distance between you and the people around you - they cannot be real in the way that you are real. You lock up any pain you might feel, you paint on a stoic mask, and you resolve to think of your companions only as tools.

After all, you’ve known this round was coming for over thirty regressions. You had time to prepare yourself to be the type of cruel that could look at the people who loved you and devoted themselves to you and see them only as tools. A limited supply. Something to be used, and eventually discarded.

...actually you know what*, I'll check the canon myself tomorrow, but: do we actually know for sure that SY died immediately after finishing PIDW? because i remember he died cursing it with his last words, but not whether it was indicated that he died the same day as he finished reading.

Couldn't it happen at a later date? Because, like, just basing it on myself, there are some things that I finished 2 years ago and hated so much that I still have a rant pretty much lock'd and loaded, and I will start recounting it at the slightest provocation.** Couldn't it be the same case?
