I watched Starkid’s new musical Cinderella’sCastle. I have some thoughts:
- I’m very unimpressed by the music and lyrics. It’s possible the electro pop style isn’t for me; at least I definitely don’t think it works for a whole musical. It sounds too samey and very few of the songs are memorable. The lyrics feel slapdash and nonsensical a lot of the time. More importantly though…
- A lot of the live singing is very, very rough, especially all of the Narrator’s falsetto. Jeff Blim could make those notes sound okay with autotune in the demos (I actually really liked the demos), but he cannot hit the constant high notes at all in this filmed live performance. I should not be cringing at the vocals in a musical. That’s a big problem. I think he needs to either write to his actual vocal range or cast a different actor who can go that high and still sound clean live. I also think the stepfamily’s Facade song sounded really rough at parts, and I know those women are good singers, so maybe it’s the vocal direction and their character voices dragging them down.
- The book has problems with incorrect word usage, like the writers were trying so hard for fantasy dialogue and cadence that they forgot to make sure their sentences made sense. You and your forebears will rule there forevermore” is wrong. “Forebears” means “ancestors”. The word you meant to use is “descendants”. And the stepmother saying, “I worried you’d befallen some awful fate” is incorrect usage. It should be “I worried that some awful fate had befallen you”. Get a copy editor on that script! (I say this as nicely as possible. I know that I’m more sensitive to usage and grammar issues than most audience members because I am a copy editor, and I don’t usually correct people without being asked, but professional musical books don’t usually make these mistakes. Not a great look.)
- I agree with the reviews I’ve seen that say the book relies way too much on un-funny sex jokes and crudeness. I didn’t laugh once. And I’ve enjoyed and laughed at many a previous Starkid show, so that’s saying something. The prince specifically is deeply obnoxious, and not in a fun way. James Tolbert deserves better material.
- I dislike that the troll forms of the stepmother and stepsisters all look exactly alike. Make the stepmother puppet bigger, a different color, let her keep her wig or give her a funny hat, anything. She should stand out as the biggest and scariest troll. In general, a troll should feel larger than life; these troll puppets have no character. The actors are trying, but these puppets are stunting their great performances.
- Things I liked: The actors were all trying their hardest with rough material, and they did a great job. Bryce Charles has a great voice and makes for a likable lead, and I wish I could see her in a better show. I’m in love with Kim Whalen as usual. Sir Hops-a-lot and Crumb are adorable and everything Joey Richter does with his puppet characters is a delight. The costumes are nice!
- The adaptation of Cinderella is very predictable, of course, but there’s one twist on an element of the tale that’s extremely creative and I liked a lot (even if it gave the stepsister the theoretical power to foil Cinderella’s comeback just by taking off her shoes, which seems like a plot hole).
- The fairytale “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” already did the evil troll princess bit and did it better, and I wish that story would get adapted more often (and Cinderella a bit less often, LBR). Castle isn’t all bad, but I don’t think ALW has to worry- modern musical theatre has sadly still not given us a Good Cinderella.

I’m still not over how Puen pretty much kidnapped a whole child and lied to his boyfriend about it and that was supposed to somehow be romantic because it brought them together.
You know what strained relationships always need? A child. Especially when the reason the relationship is strained is because they’re both too busy to spend time together. So obviously a child that neither person was prepared for and equipped to handle is the solution.
It’s not a good sign when you need to steal a child to force your partner to spend time with you. Good god

I miss the feeling I had when I first joined this fandom, I knew virtually nothing so everything was correct and I loved everything, even if that stuff just isn’t true, i was like
Bruce is a bit emotionally constipated but loves his kids? Hell yeah sounds legit
dick is a silly happy flippy man who is a bit promiscuous? Love that for him
Jason is a mega feminist literature nerd who is also buff and takes care of the street kids? Perfect man honest
Tim is a nerd who never sleeps and is queer and has never known the touch of a man nor woman? Sweet
Steph is waffle obsessed goofball? Well I prefer pancakes but right on
Cass is a mute badass who loves her fam? I love her
Duke is a normal dude? Well someone has to be and he seems neat
Alfred can do no wrong? Aight, I love old perfect tea men
Damian is a little prick? So are all middle schoolers give him time
But then I had to go learn about the characters and now I have complex opinions about them, and can see the inherent racism and sexism in how they are portrayed
You know before I joined the bat fandom I did not use the exclude tag in ao3? Like tmnt and dp have some bad stuff but usually I could just scroll past.
but now I am having to avoid fics where whole ass adults are bullying and/or oversexulizing a child
Im constantly on the look out for untagged batcwst
I struggle to find fics that don’t describe dicks ass
I have been in this fandom for probably about two years now and y’all I swear
sorry for ranting, and don’t worry I love all your stuff and I know the just back click don’t leave mean comments rule
I’m just tried bc most of the stuff I thought was true turned out to be false
Mm. I do find it a little exhausting trying to navigate the lines of what's canon, what shouldn't be canon (but is due to racism/sexism/homophobia/etc.), and just having fun.
I'm also trying to cultivate the mindset of what I've seen on Tumblr about not policing other people's ships/ideas. I am highly uncomfortable with some (particularly underaged people and adults dating), but I'm also not leaving hate comments. Like you said, the backspace exists for a reason.
Idk. There's a toooon of takes/ideas about the batfam that are inherently false, but as long as they aren't racist/sexist/etc takes, I don't see the harm in them. So what if someone wants a coffee obsessed Tim? So what if Jason's kill code is very strict? As long as they don't claim it's canon, let them be
But yeah. I have a mile long exclude list for fics on AO3. I used to use it only for triggers (I can not do stockhold syndrome, my lords), but now it's got other weird ass shit I've stumbled upon (I saw a fic where the batkids were spanked as punishment??? Like I said, not gonna leave hate comments or single anyone out. Just not my cup of tea).
I also am usually not a fan of romance/sex. It's why the batfam intrigued me so much (found families usually don't have that in it). I like exploring dynamics outside of romance and thus love the batfam. They've got so much going on that romance/sex is not needed. They are such a mess without that dynamic being added (talking about the Bats getting with a third party, but, again, trying not to yuck anyone's yum).
However, I agree. There's a ton of misinformation within fandom. I like how complex canon gets with the characters, but there's also widely different takes with them (mostly talking about Bruce here. He can either be trying or just a straight up horrible dad).

Right, okay, I’ve thought long and hard whether to write this:
A squick (even a strong one) is not the same as a trigger.
Emotional discomfort, even emotional discomfort that leads to low-level physical symptoms like e.g. mild nausea, is not trauma. Unfortunately, TikTok pop psych has done nothing to help people understand the difference, because the trend to perceive (even strong) emotional discomfort as equivalent to a trauma response is worrying and neither helps people with nor without PTSD. I don’t wish it on anyone to actually find out the difference if they haven’t yet (disclaimer, since this is unfortunately necessary these days because everything gets misconstrued: I am not talking about individual experiences, because only you can know about those. I’m talking about wider trends in an often young audience with not enough background info to be able to tell apart sound medical/psychological info and viral BS created by “influencers” for some kind of personal gain).
What people in the current fandom spat want to have tagged as “triggers” are overwhelmingly squicks. And we’re probably all guilty of quickly saying “that triggered me”, myself included (and I’m a licensed psychotherapist, shame on me). It has become somewhat of a shorthand for “extremely annoyed or grossed out”. But when it gets used in the context of tagging, it’s good to remember that no one owes us a tag list the length of our arm just because we don’t like certain things. Even if we strongly dislike them.
And even on the occasion someone else’s yuck or yum is an actual trigger for us, it is impossible to cover for every possible trigger, because in theory, EVERYTHING has the possibility to trigger someone somewhere.
E.g., a certain smell in a supermarket holds the rare possibility of triggering someone, but do you see disclaimers at the supermarket door that say, “May smell of 484 different things, which are in detail [list of 484 things] and might be different tomorrow. Plus, we might have a customer today who smells of that perfume that brings up your triggering childhood memories. Or maybe we won’t, but just on the odd chance we do, we thought we’d rather cover it”.
There might be one person with a very specific trigger that does literally nothing to the vast majority of people. Do we expect everyone on Tumblr to tag for “eyebrows” or “white T-Shirt” because of that? How about that person just puts “eyebrows” or “white T-Shirt” in their content filter instead?
Do we really suggest to put that type of responsibility on creators? More importantly: Who are we protecting that way? All we do is put people into bubble wrap and shift responsibility for our mental wellbeing away from ourselves to others.
We are trying to tell other people what to do for our own comfort. That’s controlling.
If we’re squicked out by something, there is a simple solution: we can stop looking or reading. We can use content (not tag) filters. In the worst case, we can block. We don’t have to put that type of responsibility for our personal sensitivities on creators (or people who reblog, for that matter).
We can tag for certain things as a courtesy, I’m all for it. I love being able to filter out stuff I’m not into, and I sometimes wish people would tag better or not tag a certain way (getting ship tags for a ship you’re not into slapped on your character-metas is annoying 🤣). But I don’t die, neither does it cause me unbearable distress, if I see cows where I don’t expect them. Scroll past or block. And if I’m worried about mature topics like nudity or violence: Tumblr has a community label for mature themes you can (and in my view should) use if in doubt. Funnily enough, many people don’t do that though—maybe because they worry about reach?
Of course we should include content warnings where they are due, no one says we shouldn’t. It’s also fair if a creator doesn’t wish to do that beyond general warnings (no specifics) though because they might give away, say, major plot points that way. In that case, general disclaimers like “contains depictions of violence”, or whatever it might be individually, are a good idea. And if that’s not specific enough for us despite knowing that “violence” in general might also contain our personal trigger, we might need to make the decision not to read it to stay safe, but we shouldn’t have a go at the writer for not tagging very specific things that might be considered spoilers.
Long story short: If we assume people are “triggered” by werewolves with vulvas or non-human characters, it might be worth thinking about whether we’re just talking about squicks that very much fall into the category of “personal responsibility”. And there are plenty solutions to that at our end—we don’t need to put that on creators…

Hey friends, with the recent influx of followers, we would like to take a moment to refamiliarise ourselves with the ✨blog and submission guidelines.✨
1. Don’t yuck anyone’s yum
A combination of “your kink is not my kink, and that’s ok” (ykinmkato, or kinktomato), and the belief that fandom is a sandbox large enough for all our headcanons and interpretations. What this means is that others may submit posts or make comments and leave tags you might not agree with. Should this happen… just let it go.
There is no one correct interpretation of these characters (not even canon), and your interpretation is as correct as anyone else’s. There’s no need to argue one way or another.
Example:
❌ “Everyone says Glup Shitto is x, but actually Glup Shitto is y! They’re all wrong, and I’m right!”
⭕️ “I think Glup Shitto is y!”
❌ “This submission is incorrect, Glup Shitto would never be into [kink]”
⭕️ “Well, I don’t agree with this interpretation of Glup Shitto, but I’m going to keep scrolling instead of commenting.”
2. Don’t be a dick
Ties in with Rule 1. We expect you to behave civil while you are here. No fights, no being snippy on people’s posts. Keep negativity out of the equation.
It’s also a catch all for no fash behaviour. No racism, homophobia, et cetera. That shit gets you instantly blocked.
3. This is not a democracy
We are the final arbiters. If we get a submission that we feel does not follow rule 1 and 2, we don’t post it. It happens very rarely, and we wanted to reintroduce our guidelines to prevent it from happening more often.
However, we are benevolent mods, and as long as rule 1 and 2 are followed, you’re solid.
tl;dr
No yucking people’s yums.
Don’t be a dick.
Mods are the benevolent rulers of this mighty queendom, we make the final call on everything.
With all of that said, we are always open to legitimate questions, requests, and pointers, and we try to act from a place of empathy. We’re having a lot of fun running this blog, and we love seeing all your submissions. So keep ‘em coming!

i’m not going to tag this in fear of having the caitvi police come after me bc i don’t want to yuck anyone’s media yum but did anyone else find the pacing for caitvi a little too rushed for their liking in s1? i like caitlyn and vi individually as characters, i genuinely do.
but something about the abrupt pacing felt like there were kinks left in the cloth so it felt like trying to put on a velvet robe of a tragic romance story—except there were wrinkles everywhere.
(and to be fair, vi is emotionally stunted and traumatized after all she’s experienced and her years in prison and all that. so maybe her choices don’t make sense to me so i’ll acknowledge that so i’m being fair)
i wanted to love the ship so badly since i love to see representation, this show, league lore, and the two involved characters. but i just haven’t been able to get into this bandwagon.
i know i’m just an incredibly small minority of ppl so i am not brave enough to tag this post. but just wanted to see if anyone in my incredibly small online community/following felt similarly.
or even differently!
as long as it’s respectful dialogue and conversation, i’m here for it!

I’m not main tagging this bc I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum but I’m really confused by the pacing of S3 and I’m just kind of… lost? Like everything is both a lot and also not at all? I already knew things were happening bc of the trailer so it’s not really surprising? And I’m also confused about how in 4 episodes it’ll all wrap up in a satisfying way?
I’m just sitting here like this:

May I ask what are your favorite Britin fics? 🥺
Hello dear sweet anon!
I am always happy to share my QAF/Britin fic recs. I keep a collection going of my bookmarks at AO3 and try to keep them pretty well tagged. You can find that here but I’ll pull out a few that I find particularly enjoyable:
Pulse Point - a complete AU with trauma surgeon!Brian and EMT!Justin. By Xie
Unfold Me - a S5 canon divergent fic which honestly solves a lot of my issues with S5. By mornmeril
Monogamy - another S5 canon divergent fic which takes an entirely different approach and is full of the feels. By frayach
The Love Song of Brian A. Kinney - a post canon classic, one shot. By ipoiledi.
Counting Dollars - a gapfiller for between S3 and S4, one shot. Also by ipoiledi.
Catalepsis - lovely S3 canon divergent fic, lots of delicious hurt/comfort. By @lostcol
Forward - post canon one shot focusing on Brian. By @kinnenvy
Glowing Rooms - canon divergent at 122 - Brian moves to NYC and doesn’t go to prom, Justin is bashed anyway. One shot. Amazing. By ohmyjetsabel
Only Time - post canon series, honestly could be S6, absolutely brilliant. Also by Xie
Homecoming - honestly, you cannot go wrong with this writer but her main series (The One Where Justin Loses His Hearing) can be intimidating. These are two parts of that series that can be read as a standalone fic (two chapters). By LaVieEnRose
If you want some fantastic PWP, I highly recommend devil_on_your_shoulder27384
Also all of ivysunna’s fics are incredible but I love their canon fics such as we’d still worship this love (S2, canon compliant, outsider POV which is always fun for Britin) and their newest the heat of your electric touch (S4/cancer arc gapfiller, canon compliant).
Wait - set during S3, Justin has an HIV scare (open ending). By @thissugarcane
Also, if you are new to fic in QAF, I would be absolutely remiss if I didn’t direct you toward Myrna’s four part fic that is canon divergent after the end of S2 and is delicious hurt/comfort and alternating POV. It is partway down this archive page. Look for If You Needed Me (If You Needed Me / I Would Come to You / I’d Swim the Seas / For To Ease Your Pain). I encourage you to save it as PDFs because it is hard to track down.
Overall, I tend to bookmark fics where the premise is interesting (bonus points for hurt/comfort), the characters and their growth are central, and the characters must be in character (any changes to their character must be explained by growth or AU circumstances but honestly I love these characters and I want to read about them), and the writing is good. I don’t enjoy fics that are anti-character. I know those are popular in this fandom and I’m not going to yuck anyone’s yum, but I generally find every character on this show has something redeeming about them and they are all flawed. It’s far more interesting to me to explore that rather than have an outright villain. More than any other fandom, I tend to enjoy canon-based fics rather than complete AUs (I say as I’m partway through writing a complete AU).
Happy reading! If you read anything that you enjoy, come back and let me know your thoughts (from this list or anything else).

any of my mutuals ~reconsidering their involvement~ in harry potter fandom and want to vent?
torn between “i don’t want to acknowledge that it exists, at all, i don’t want to give it one iota more airtime and headspace than it’s already going to get”
and “is my silence tacit approval”
and “people are going to be hurt and harmed by this” and “people are going to be excited about this and enjoy it and have positive feelings about this” and “there are people i care about in both categories and both categories are overlapping/non-mutually-exclusive groups”
i don’t want to cause anybody any unnecessary hurt, everyone on here is literally just some guy trying to get by, and i’m very familiar with muting tags of the latest fandom hyperfixation. i’m categorically not here to yuck anyone’s yum and i genuinely don’t think anyone’s a bad person or think any less of anyone for liking what they like. for the record, i think jkr is causing hurt; the impact of what any single one of us is doing is negligible compared to jkr, the executives at hbo, wb, etc. BUT at the same time i don’t have words to express how much i do not want this new thing to exist or, failing which, to hear about it in any way — and if hogwarts legacy was anything to go by, the untagged unfilterable vagueblogging will be inescapable. i think it might be possible to have a non-hp fandom presence without hearing an utterly unbearable amount of this discourse, but hp fandom… even peripherally? idk.
tbh even prior to this announcement i’d been drifting away from hp fandom so honestly… this ambivalence isn’t entirely due to the reboot — but it was nice to have this as a home of sorts. i’ve gotten to know some of the loveliest, most wonderful, kindest, and most brilliant people in this fandom, and gotten to read some of the most incredible things. it’s been such a privilege and i love you all so very very much. i’d somewhat managed to make a kind of peace with only interacting with the original material, of buying into the fan attitude of it’s ours now—and this is just. such a rude reminder that it isn’t. it will not be, not at least while jkr is alive, and i’m not sure if i want to, how, i can be a part of that.

I mean you in a diaper would be dope, but also I don’t wanna ask for things if ur uncomfortable, hard line for me!
Thanks!
I’ve considered it for sure! I mean, I’ve worn diapers before already taking a pic or vid in them seems like the logical next step.
My thing is that seeing others in diapers really does nothing for me so in a sense, seeing myself in diapers does nothing for me. If that makes sense at all? Lol. I guess what I’m saying is I like the wetting not the diaper itself.
The deeper reason is that any kind of abdl / age play is hard limit for me. I don’t see diapers as a part of that the way that I like them, but I know if I post myself in a diaper that’s how a lot of people would interpret it and then I’d get a flood of people in the replies and in my asks and dms trying to engage with me like that and nopenopenope not my thing at all. Which if you or anyone else reading this is into that, that’s fine!! I’m never gonna yuck anyones yum / kink shame (unless it’s like,, illegal) bc I literally run a piss blog and I can’t talk and also like whatever you want! Like if someone enjoys something I don’t, good for them! Glad they have something they like! I just don’t want to get involved in certain things, yknow?
And I guess I could tag the post stuff like such and such dni but A: given my experience making content like this people are illiterate when they are horny or just don’t give half a shit about boundaries and B: I’d look kind of ridiculous making specific fetish content and being like “havers of the fetish I just made content for don’t interact!!” Lol.

I feel the pain of x readers everywhere and that is coming from someone who
A) frequently consumes (or tries to) x reader fics and
B) even occasionally writes them
Its one thing to admit that youre writing a character very ooc and another to be constantly projecting your shitty sexual fantasies onto a character and warping them in a poorly written manner.
I try to only post my fics on ao3 to isolate them and also want you to know that i know its bad writing and im sorry. I could go on some more about the oddness of the x reader/"selfship" community and their flooding of any tag ever but just wanted to let you know some of us are self aware
yeah I don’t have any problem with readers and genuinely for the most part I don’t have any issue with the writers. It’s literally just the inconsistent tagging that really gets me heated! I end up just being really liberal with the block button. I don’t wanna yuck anyone’s yums but when I’m trying to find fanart or discussion posts on a character and a massive chunk of the tag is just smut it gets sooooo tiring to scroll through. Literally no one could ever hope to get everyone to tag them with the same tag but *more* people tagging their posts with like. “Reader Insert” or “x reader” would definitely help. or maybe just not putting it in the main tags but I understand that there ARE people looking for them and that that tag is good for them as well as for organization on the OP’s blog. so tl;dr, I was being hyperbolic and I understand that it’s on me to curate my online experience but I wish it was easier!
