hello!! lately i've been thinking about houses/interiors in splatoon as i've been pondering some up for my ocs, & i was wondering if there's any info on them in canon? so far the best that comes to mind is the splat 1 loading screen & that new art of acht, but I was curious on if there's anything about apartments & interiors specifically... tysm! :-]
Unfortunately we don't have much, and considering how much living spaces vary in real life even within the same culture, it's hard to say x thing applies to all splatoon households.
the game developers are japanese, the game takes place in japan, and takes inspiration from japanese culture and daily life. taking that into consideration, where canon fails, i use modern japanese living spaces as a reference for imagining what an interior may look like in inkadia.
headcanon aside. time to dig up what canon info i've found regarding homes and living spaces
In the Octotune album booklet we get one of the few examples of an inkling home interior, the Houzuki mansion. though pearl, as well all know, is Insanely Fucking Rich and our average inkling is NOT going to be living this luxuriously. one useful tidbit we can get from the text is this:
Q5: Wow! Is this the garage?
Pearl: That's just the shoe storage, man.
the word she's using for shoe storage is ゲタばこ which is a cubby you're meant to put your shoes in before entering a house, located in an entryway. in other words, implying a cultural norm of taking your shoes off before entering (something adhered to more strictly in japan vs america). not like this is really followed in official art showing inkfish at home (except for this s1 era piece of an inkling watching tv) probs because shoes are cooler lol
let's see what else ummm bedding.
s1 and s3 dialogue for flounder heights mention futons. traditional japanese bedding typically laid out on the floor when in use, and folded up and put away in a big cubby during the day. its a common sight to see them hung out in the sun on the balcony to not get moldy. some of those things draped over the railings in flounder heights are futons.
not everyone in japan does this though- youll still see western style beds or even futons on bed frames since taking it out and putting it away is a pain in the ass. also not every apartment has a built in proper futon storage space. (...mine does, but i repurposed it into another closet and just use western style bedding lol)
same is true for inkadians too -the bed in the s1 splashscreen doesnt look like a futon to me. point is there's options for what do with the bed situation.
speaking of the apartment splashscreen for s1, there is a blurb in the artbook about it and how inklings are typically pretty tidy with their living spaces.
im sure there's plenty of messy inklings too.
anyway there's just a few tidbits about living spaces in relation to canon info.
unfortunately there's Nothing about the bathroom or how they bathe, though previously i shared my headcanons about how i think that could work.
for the kitchen i think all we can do is assume. Acht has a fridge how surprising /s
at the start i mentioned that i take inspo from japanese life where canon fails. ive spent a few years in japan so this works conveniently for me LOL but i assume most people following me do not have that experience. so for those who wanna take that japan inspo too, here's a few small things that are different in japanese living spaces that ive thought may be true for inkopolis?
-living spaces are so much smaller on average (of course)
-washing machines do not use heated water and like Nobody has a drier in their house. laundry is hung on the balcony, or by the window if there is none, to dry. you want a drying machine? go to the laundromat.
-big ovens? like for baking? casseroles? this is Rare in japanese homes. more likely youll see like a little toaster oven. microwaves with an oven setting. i have a gas stove with a fish grill drawer like this. ive never seen this in america but i KNOW in my heart inklings would have this
-tiniest fucking kitchens sometimes. a pattern ive often seen for little one room apartments is a pathetic kitchen space in the hall between the entrance and bedtoom where its like. one sink. and space for an electric burner. you want counter space go fuck yourself. if youre a broke inkling who doesnt cook much this may be the option for you.
-i think every house ive been in has had a genkan in some form.

Shadow: I'm nonbinary because I was created in a laboratory and thus have no "birth gender" to identify as, the scientists assigned me as male because of arbitrary physical characteristics but reclaiming my gender as my own empowers me.
Silver: I'm nonbinary because we don't really do gender in the future? I mean we do have genders, but like, if you're on the run from a Mad Max-style gang who are trying to knife you for jacking one of their tires for food, you're not really going to sit down for a minute to wonder if you're more of a boy or a girl.
Sonic: I'm nonbinary because fuck it we ball

Inazuma eleven initially spoke to us bcs all the characters are so mentally unwell. All of them are us fr
The only differences between the characters is how much help theyre getting and have gotten which speaks to how better they are at then being present for another character and being sensitive with someone's issue
Ofc this isnt universal bcs you also sometimes have characters who obviously sets their own issues aside to help someone else and is still very good at helping them (looking at you tenma and possibly yuuichi if he had more screentime)
Anyway, what im getting at is all the antagonists and protagonists are all insane and that speaks to us

Can I ask, since you mentioned agreeing 'even if under duress' - how did the Watchers convince Player Grian to join them in hunger au?
So take this with the specific grain of salt that ive never watched Evo directly (but have friends who have ((thank you wren)), so i know tidbits via osmosis from them), but my thought has always been that the riddles the Watchers gave the Evo Players were all tests used to measure cleverness and intelligence-- the whole point of them attempting to copy the mind of a Player into a Watcher larva in the first place was to try and avoid the insanely high infant mortality rate their typical juveniles go through, bc they dont understand their own limits enough to even know they have them yet. So they needed a Player they knew they could instruct and who would listen to them, and, well. Grian, for all he was rebellious and outright defiant of the Watchers, still solved their puzzles and only had to be punished once before he stopped trying to mess with them
What ive always pictured is after the dragon fight the two main elders of the Watcher colony finally revealed themselves to Grian properly-- i have this crystal clear image of the two of them hovering above and next to the central end island, looming over Grian, and like, these guys are big. HUGE. A good 5x bigger than the ender dragon itself, at LEAST. It would be hard not to feel insanely intimidated by that, honestly, especially when there are two of them side by side, blocking your entire view of the End from that direction.
Anyway picture that with the context of these two giant floating winged worms youve never seen before, who have demonstrated their powerful ability to manipulate code in a way you cant.... telling you that they have chosen you to become one of them. Thats an immense amount of pressure, both from flattery and fear, especially considering theyve punished you before for defying them. I like to think even then, Grian balked a bit, and while i dont have exact dialogue beats here, i know the Watchers continued putting that pressure on him (likely while leveraging his friendships too-- like ive always said, if Grian hadnt been chosen, BigB wouldve been, and i can absolutely see the Watchers offering to take him in Grian's stead) until he finally caved and accepted their "offer" of joining them.
Unfortunately, he didnt find out exactly what that entailed until it was far too late.

I have a friend who isnt like... super outspoken anti but defin holds their beliefs. DMC is their FAVORITE game series and it's consistently SO weird to me how they are able to ignore/deny the incestuousness of it all. Quote "It's WEIRD how incest is so common in this fandom, it's GROSS, nobody understands their relationship (talking abt d and v) like i do lmao". Like???? What are you gettiing at? Them saying they "understand" the brother's relationship honestly makes me kind of worried abt what they consider normal...
Yeaahhh, honestly sounds like either good old fashioned delusion or like they're making up a different canon in their head to support their interpretation/beliefs. And while that's not necessarily bad on its own, when you lose sight of what you've made up as your own hc and what's actually there and start attacking others for interacting with the source material as is, well, obviously that's not ok lol. Hope you can distance yourself from them anon, trying to keep "friends" like that is often way more trouble than it's worth.

i’m a “love is the point of it all” truther but very essential to that belief is the idea that this goes beyond interpersonal love (including romantic, platonic, familial, etc.). but before anyone jumps down my throat to tell me that you don’t experience love i’d ask you to take a moment to examine your life.
do you have any hobbies that bring you feelings of joy, giddiness, even peace? do you have a favorite piece of music? a favorite meal? does the sound of ocean waves or wind sweeping through the trees make your heart swell? the warmth of the sun on your skin? seeing a beautiful bird? hearing the name of the town you grew up in? watching your favorite film for the thousandth time? do you create anything? do you ever crave your mother’s cooking? do you like to snuggle up all cozy and warm in the softness of your bed? have you ever read a book so beautiful you cried?
that’s love, bitch. the love of living, the love of this world, this existence. that’s the point of it all.
