A New Jersey Transit commuter train struck a chunk of a tree on the tracks Monday, leaving the train operator dead and nearly two dozen people injured.
The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. just north of the Roebling Station in Mansfield Township, NJ Transit said in a statement. There were 42 passengers aboard the River Line train, and television news video showed a large piece of the tree under the front of the train.
Twenty-three people were treated for minor injuries, NJ Transit said. Authorities worked to determine how the tree ended up on the tracks.
River Line service was suspended in both directions between the Roebling and Trenton train stations, and sections of some nearby roads, including U.S. Highway 130, closed as authorities investigated.

Excerpt from this story from Nation of Change:
Funded through the National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program, the Department of Interior announced $46.7 million in grants will be awarded to 10 projects in 8 states. The program, which was started in 2014, helps fund the creation or improvement of outdoor recreation spaces to economically disadvantaged communities.
This is the program's second round of grants this year after $58.3 million in grants were awarded to 14 projects in March.
“The Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership program has consistently remained one of the Interior Department’s most impactful programs investing in urban and disadvantaged communities,” Jackie Ostfeld, Campaign Director of Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All, said. “Over the past 10 years it has continued to provide grant funding to communities across the nation, bolstering existing parks and recreation opportunities, creating new ones for millions of people to enjoy.”
According to a press release from Sierra Club, the following project will be funded:
Cleveland, Ohio
The city will receive $461,332 to create two park areas, one with a playground, splash pad, game tables, and more. The other will have picnic tables and an open-use playfield.
Des Moines, Iowa
The city will receive $5,291,000 to add a playground, splash pad, open-air shelters, stormwater management, and more to Birdland Park and Marina.
Houston, Texas
The city will receive $10,000,000 to improve MacGregor Park, including updating existing infrastructure and sports amenities.
New Brunswick, New Jersey
The city will receive $2,041,770 to create a new park with a dog park, play areas, and shade trees.
Porterville, California
The city will receive $2,500,000 to create a new park on undeveloped land, including native drought-tolerant plants, sport courts, and solar lighting.
Raleigh, North Carolina
The city will receive $8,679,930 to develop and restore Smoky Hollow Park, including erosion control, park amenities, native meadows, and more.
“Grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund are making access to recreational opportunities possible across the country,” David L. Bernhardt, Interior Secretary, said. “We look forward to working with our state and local partners to increase the considerable benefits derived from our local parks and outdoor recreation areas.”
The program provides matching grants, up to 50 percent of the total project costs, to “enable urban communities to create new outdoor recreation spaces, reinvigorate existing parks, and form connections between people and the outdoors,” according to National Park Service.

Kumquats are fun to eat and the word kumquat is fun to say, so it stands to reason that the 2025 Kumquat Festival in Dade City on Saturday, January 25 will be a fantastically fun event for all! Today, NatureCoaster explores all things Kumquat to help prepare you for the 2025 Annual Kumquat Festival® including how it came to be, who puts it on, what you can find there, and more. What is a Kumquat? The kumquat is native to China and was given as a traditional gift on New Year’s Day. Kumquats are still a popular gift in Asian cultures, with many of the locally-grown crops being shipped to the New York/New Jersey area. With the word translating to “golden coins,” the kumquat represents prosperity according to information from TV horticulturist Roger Swain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qZBowlBEd8 Where Did the Kumquat Festival Come From? Nearly 100 years ago, Casper Joseph “J. C.” Nathe came to what is now known as St. Joseph and worked several jobs to make ends meet, including at a nursery near Jessamine owned by J. W. Ellsworth. There, he became acquainted with the kumquat, an ornamental plant that was given to wish prosperity to the recipient. Nathe planted an acre of kumquat trees in 1912, as well as 50 acres of citrus, bananas, avocados, guavas, pineapples, and vegetables to feed his family and trade for other goods and services. The Nathe family used the fruit for preserves which became popular among area residents. Orders started coming in, so they began growing more kumquats. In less than 15 years, Florida Grower magazine crowned J.C. Nathe “the world’s kumquat king.” Several local St. Joseph families began converting their acreage to the profitable little sweet and sour fruit. From the 1930s to 1962, when a bad freeze destroyed the fruit on most of the trees, the number of kumquats grown in this rural area of eastern Pasco County grew and grew. Frank Gude, president of Kumquat Growers. Image by Robin Draper. Kumquat Growers, Inc. was started in 1971 by owners/growers Charles Barthle, Frank Gude, Joseph and Paul Neuhofer, and Fred Heidgerken. Today, the Gude and Neuhofer families own the nation's largest producer and shipper of kumquats and kumquat products. They are descendants of the original St. Joseph families that have been growing, packing, and selling kumquats for over 100 years. Why a Kumquat Festival? Over twenty-five years ago, the East Pasco Chamber of Commerce (then the Dade City Chamber of Commerce) began holding a festival to celebrate the golden kumquat and all it has contributed to the area. While the citrus business has been up and down, the Annual Kumquat Festival has continued to welcome residents and winter visitors to the area on the last Saturday of January. Today, this wholesome, fun, and delicious event features over 300 vendors and 30 sponsors coming together throughout the streets of a historic, charming Southern town to celebrate the little fruit that is both sweet and sour. “Dade City and Eastern Pasco County are preparing to welcome thousands of residents and visitors to our area. It is our pleasure to produce this quality event, and we invite everyone to enjoy the Festival and come back and visit us again” says Vicki Wiggins, President/CEO of the East Pasco Chamber of Commerce. What Happens at the Kumquat Festival? A quilt display and raffle are held on the north side of the historic Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City. Hundreds of vendors line both sides of the streets in the downtown area around the courthouse. Local retail shops and restaurants feature kumquat-y items and get into the fun while visitors walk the streets, shopping, and dining. It is a laid-back, family-friendly alternative to Tampa's Gasparilla Festival. Pops 54 by Mike Groseclose at a previous Kumquat Festival Car Show. Ronnie Setser's Car & Truck Shows puts on the annual event, drawing great vehicles from around Florida and the southeast U.S. Kumquat Festival Car Show The Annual Kumquat Festival Car Show features an amazing variety of classic cars and trucks in the large parking lot of the downtown Judicial Courthouse. Organized by Ronnie Setser's Car and Truck Shows, the trophies, dash plaques, and competitive show attracts some of the nicest vehicles to be seen in the Southeast U.S. The Annual Kumquat Festival Car Show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Robert D Sumner Judicial Courthouse. Sponsors Make the Kumquat Festival Happen AdventHealth and Florida's Sports Coast are the headlining sponsors of the 2025 Annual Kumquat Festival, joining more than thirty business and government partners who come together to make the day memorable. NatureCoaster.com is proud to be part of this group. Advent Health and Florida's Sports Coast are the headlining sponsors of the Kumquat Festival and several others pitch in to make it happen, including NatureCoaster.com. Image by Diane Bedard. Stop in one of the Friendly Local Shops and Restaurants Local storefronts are decorated for the festival in kumquat themes and offer great deals for attendees during the festivities. In past years, kumquat beer and wine were for sale at some locations. Dade City is a great town to visit any day and the unique shops and restaurants that make up this vibrant downtown are another great way to spend part of your day. Antiques, toys, books, jewelry, quilting, and pet supplies are some types of the shops you will find. Restaurants vary from an authentic tea house to sandwich shops, coffee shops, a large Mexican restaurant and store, Italian, craft beer, wine library, pizza, and fine dining. Although Dade City is a pet-friendly city, please allow your pets to stay at home during the festival. Try the kumquat pie! Image courtesy of East Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Hundreds of Vendors provide Unique & Kumquat Items Unique arts and crafts are fun to discover in many vendor booths lining the streets of this quaint city in eastern Pasco County. Many of these artisans return year after year to sell their wares. Delicious kumquat foods, as well as many ethnic offerings, are available to festival goers. Try the kumquat pie! The kumquat pie was created by Rosemary Gude. it quickly became the most popular item among Kumquat Festival attendees, to the point of being designated as the official pie of Pasco County! There is a myriad of opportunities to sample the tasty little fruit, whether it be as marmalade, cookies, salsa, ice cream, refrigerator pie, or a sip of kumquat beer. Vendors line both sides of the streets with fun and unique shopping finds. Image courtesy of East Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Kumquat Kids Corral and Health Fair Onsite A Kumquat Kids Corral offers families the opportunity to let off some steam with a safe place for the littles to let off steam. Make it an Overnight Visit: Kumquat Growers Open House The 2025 Kumquat Growers Open House will be held at the Kumquat Growers packing house in St. Joseph from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the two days before the Kumquat Festival (Jan. 23 and 24). Here you can immerse yourself in the agricultural side of kumquats and shop at their gift shop where you will find a little bit of “all things kumquat.” Learn about the origin and history of kumquats in the Dade City area during the 15-minute talks held several times each day (the last one is held at 2:30 pm). You will also learn about the different varieties of kumquats and how they are used. Tour a kumquat grove at the Kumquat Growers Open House. Image by Diane Bedard. There are tours of the Kumquat Growers packing house where you can learn how kumquats are picked, processed, packaged, and shipped. Lunch vendors and live music, along with some WWII military vehicles and arts and crafts vendors are on site. Half-hour tram tours allow visitors to see an actual kumquat grove. This tour explains the planting, maintenance, and care of kumquat trees for commercial production with the last one held at 2:30 pm each day. Places to Stay There is a nice Hampton Inn just south of downtown Dade City, a Microtel in Zephyrhills, and the Locke Inn, a former jail in downtown Dade City that has been renovated into some interesting suites, some motels, and several hotels in Wesley Chapel along the I-75 and SR 56-SR54 corridor. Camping and RV hookups can be had at the Travelers Rest Resort. This family-friendly festival celebrates wonderful creations from the delicious kumquat citrus fruit. Stop by the Kumquat Growers booth and you can taste a kumquat for free. Image by Diane Bedard. Free Admission at the 2025 Annual Kumquat Festival® Free admission, family fun, and free parking in all the City lots around the downtown are part of this laid-back festival that pays homage to a little orange orb that's both tart and sweet in a beautiful, historic downtown. The kumquat has become an important part of Florida’s Nature Coast, and the 2025 Annual Kumquat Festival on January 25 in downtown Dade City promises to be one not to miss. Stop by the NatureCoaster booth at the Kumquat Festival and say, "Hi!" You can pick up a free map of Florida's Nature Coast, get a hug, tell us about your favorite kumquat surprise or tradition, and shop for some NatureCoaster swag of your own. We love to see you there! Boat Primer Market is set for a Potential Growth Worldwide: Excellent Technology Trends with Business Analysis
A boat primer is a product developed to provide adhesion and finishing to the boat that is to be painted. Boat primers can be either one or two-component products. The primers can be chosen based on the degree of hardness, their waterproofing properties, adhesion properties to different substrates, anti-corrosive properties, ease of application, and volume solids/high build properties. The United States paint and coatings industry include manufacturers, raw materials suppliers, and distributors. Raw materials for paints and coatings are derived not only from fossil fuels and minerals but also from natural products, such as clays, tree saps, and vegetable oils. Petrochemicals are still among the most critical raw material, and the industry is seriously affected by petrochemical shortages and price fluctuations.

Thunderstorms bring severe weather to multiple states, claiming a child's life, as heat scorches the West
Strong thunderstorms barreled across the central and eastern U.S. on Wednesday, reportedly claiming the life of a young child, triggering flood advisories, and causing a series of travel delays, while a heat dome baked California's Central Valley, other parts of the West, and southern Texas.
In Livonia, Michigan, a 2-year-old child was killed, and a 2-month-old infant and their mother were injured when a tree fell on their house amid high winds from a storm, according to WJBK-TV. The condition of the mother and baby, who were hospitalized, has not been detailed.

Separate storms were set to roll over the Midwest, lower Plains, Ohio Valley, and the mid-Atlantic region throughout the day and into the night, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center. By morning, flash flood warnings were in effect across parts of north-central Texas, northwestern Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Philadelphia.
In Texas, the weather service in Fort Worth advised residents to stay indoors as floodwaters remained high and rivers were above flood stage. "Doppler radar indicated the heavy rain has largely come to an end, but it will take several hours for flood waters to recede," the weather service said. "Please do not travel unless you are sure roads are not flooded!"
In Oklahoma and Iowa, meteorologists warned of flooding along the banks, fields, and roads near rivers. Across Michigan and Ohio, forecasters said isolated wind damage throughout the afternoon would be the main storm threat.
Nearly 60,000 homes and businesses were without power across Texas late Wednesday afternoon, according to a USA TODAY outage tracker. Additionally, 59,000 utility customers in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota experienced outages, along with 26,000 in Mississippi.
Weather Forecast For North Carolina:

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, more than 350 flights were delayed, and at least 45 were canceled Wednesday morning, according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website. The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily grounded all flights at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
Travel disruptions extended to the Northeast as well. Flights at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport were delayed by more than three hours on average, while Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey saw average delays exceeding two hours. Departure delays were also reported at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
Millions Under Heat Advisories
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in Kansas:
Much of the southwestern U.S., southern Texas, and California's Central Valley are under heat advisories as the first major heat wave of the summer brings anticipated record-breaking temperatures in the triple digits.
The National Weather Service in Los Angeles and Oxnard, California, forecasted temperatures up to 100 degrees across the Cuyama and Salinas valleys through the afternoon, as well as the Highway 14 corridor, which runs from Los Angeles to the northern Mojave Desert.
In the eastern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, temperatures were expected to reach the 90s to lower 100s. Heat advisories were also active across New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada, where forecast temperatures approached or exceeded 100 degrees. In Las Vegas, the afternoon high temperature was expected to be between 107 and 114 degrees.

Southern Texas, which has faced unseasonably hot temperatures since late May, could see afternoon highs of 103 to 107 degrees. The heat index, or "feels like" temperature, could reach well over 110 degrees in some areas, including Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Uvalde, El Paso, and the Rio Grande Valley.
The extreme heat is expected to continue into the weekend.

How To Know When Is Time To Clean My Roof in North Bergen NJ?
Roof Cleaning and Roof Maintenance If you're in North Bergen, New Jersey, and noticing signs like moss buildup or clogged gutters on your roofing, it's time to learn more about professional roof cleaning services. Identifying these signs can help you find the right experts to wash your roof and ensure its longevity and durability. Why Do I Need to Clean My Roof? Performing a roof wash is primarily aimed at preventing the growth of moss, algae, and mold on the roof. Eliminating mold is crucial as it can pose health risks, becomes difficult to remove if left untreated, and attracts pests that can damage the roof. Moreover, cleaning the roof enables inspections for any new damage, enhances the curb appeal of your home, extends the roof’s lifespan, reduces energy costs, and maintains the roof warranty. How Frequently Should You Clean Your Roof? It’s recommended to hire a professional roof cleaning service for an annual cleaning. This frequency allows your local roofing company to catch any developing issues early and prevent them from worsening. Additionally, we advise cleaning your roof after each major storm. While you may not need a full roof wash every time, it’s crucial to remove loose debris such as tree branches or trash that may have accumulated during bad weather. Leaving debris on your roof can cause damage, potentially leading to roof leaks by ripping off shingles. How To Check If Your Roof Needs Cleaning? Regular roof cleaning is crucial for maintaining your roof’s condition over time. Here’s a list of key warning signs to watch out for. These indicators can help you decide if it’s time to call in a roof cleaning professional. Visible growth on your roof One of the most noticeable indications that your roof requires cleaning is the accumulation of moss or lichen. This is easily identifiable from the ground, and the extent of buildup will be visually apparent as well. Allowing moss to thrive can result in significant damage to your roof. The bacteria responsible for moss growth can infiltrate cracks between roof tiles, expanding these gaps as the moss spreads, ultimately leading to water seepage into your property. Repairing leaky roofs and water-damaged walls can be expensive, making it essential to clear moss and prevent your roof from being compromised. Discoloration And Dirty Roof Accumulated grime and dirt on your roof can cause discoloration over time. Regular cleaning helps maintain a bright color and ensures your roof stays aesthetically pleasing. Clogged Gutters If your gutters are clogged, it’s a clear sign that your roof needs cleaning. Clogged gutters pose various risks beyond just roof damage. They can lead to foundational issues, broken gutters, damage to walls and ceilings, and even insect infestations. Roof Shingles Shifting The accumulation of leaves, grime, mold, and moss on your roof can cause your roof shingles to lift away from the surface materials. This lifting leaves your roof susceptible to water damage and leakage. Roof cleaning helps to remove debris that may have gotten underneath the shingles, preserving the integrity of your roof. Do you notice any of these signs when you inspect your roof? Have you lost track of when your roof was last cleaned, and was it quite some time ago? If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, it’s a clear indication that your roof requires cleaning. If you are looking for contractors for your upcoming home renovation project at New America Construction we provide roofing estimates for all NJ homeowners. Whats the No. 1 emerging pest that lawn care operators should know about in 2024?

Pensacola tree service is a company that specializes in removing trees. They have been doing this for over 10 years and they are really good at it. They also do stump grinding, which means they get rid of the stump left behind after the tree is removed. They are fully licensed and insured, so you can be sure that your property is in good hands. Spotted lanternfly is once again a pest experts say LCOs should keep an eye on. (Photo: arlutz73 / iStock / Getty Images Plus / Getty Images) Aaron Hathaway Aaron Hathaway Technical services manager in turf and ornamentals Nufarm The spotted lanternfly (SLF) is a fast-moving insect pest, but it fortunately isn’t as devastating to its hosts as some other pests like emerald ash borer. It was first found in the U.S. in 2014 in Berks County, Pa., and made its way to New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and seen in Michigan. SLF is more of a nuisance pest to trees but can devastate crops like hops, grapes, and others. It has many hosts on which they feed by piercing through plants and sucking the sugar-rich sap. They leave a wake of secreted honeydew, which attracts bees, wasps and other insects and promotes the growth of sooty mold, which can cover plants, patios, cars and anything else underneath heavily infested hosts. Matt Wilkinson Matt Wilkinson Proprietary products manager Albaugh Specialty Products Doveweed is a weed primarily found near the Florida coast but has been emerging further north and more inland. This annual is often mistaken for Virginia buttonweed and can be difficult to kill. Split applications in February or March and again in April or May can help alleviate the potential of preemergent misses. Atrazine, S-metolachlor, dimethenamid, and indaziflam provide the best activity for preemergent options. Early identification for postemergent applications is essential as young doveweed plants can be difficult to differentiate among desirable warm-season grasses. Young leaves are most susceptible to chemical controls and postemergent combinations, including 2,4-D, dicamba, MCPA, sulfentrazone and metsulfuron tend to work best. However, multiple applications may be necessary. Jared Hoyle Jared Hoyle, Ph.D. Turf and ornamental territory manager Corteva Agriscience One emerging pest that LCOs should know about in 2024 is Japanese stiltgrass. As a summer annual that comes back year after year, populations and the seed bank can increase year-to-year if not controlled. LCOs must apply preemergent herbicides before germination. If LCOs apply preemergent herbicides too late, they will have to move to a post-application product. Dithiopyr, commonly utilized in weed control programs, can control postemergently at early growth stages as well as preemergence control thereafter. Bobby Kerr, Ph.D. Bobby Kerr, Ph.D. Technical service manager Quali-Pro Bermudagrass mites (Eriophyes cynodoniensis) have become an increasing issue in the U.S. over the last several years. Mites are difficult to diagnose due to size (adults are 0.006 to 0.008 inches or 0.16 to 0.21 millimeters long). They are cigar or banana-shaped, translucent and have two legs. Development from egg to adult takes about two weeks and each female lays about 50 eggs. The combination of tiny size, quick life cycle and females producing a large number of eggs makes diagnosing and controlling bermudagrass mites challenging. ~ William Alexander ~
We have a belated #harbordefensehappybirthday to celebrate!
Today, we honor Continental (U.S.) Army Major General William Alexander, Lord Stirling who was born (most likely) on (Wed) December 4th, 1726 in New York City.
By all accounts, he was quite intelligent and well educated. He was the son of Scottish immigrants who fled Scotland after the Jacobite Rebellion. There was ancestral royal blood in the family, and he sought and held a highly controversial title of Lord Stirling. He lived a life befitting the title - and racked up the bill to go with it. Living in New Jersey and deeply in debt by the time the Revolutionary War broke out, the conflict provided a timely interruption to offload his monetary problems.
He became a Colonel in the New Jersey Militia, using his personal funds to outfit the 1st NJ Regiment; he was promoted to Brigadier General in March, 1776.
At the Battle of Long Island in August, the Patriots were quickly outflanked by the Redcoats. Seeing the disaster unfold, Stirling organized troops from Maryland into a well-executed, collapsing rear-guard action that allowed the majority of the American Army to escape. Scattering his men at the very end, he himself remained to be captured. The action was so successful, even the British acknowledged his gallantry.
Released in a prisoner exchange, Stirling was decisively engaged at Trenton that December. He was defeated at Short Hills, NJ in June of 1777, but won at Brandywine and Germantown, both in Pennsylvania. That winter, by accident, he was able to expose, and stop, a planned coup by General Horatio Gates to take command from George Washington. He’s forever part of New Jersey’s legacy for his part in the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse on June 28th, 1778. The fight was savage and he took heavy casualties, but his troops held their ground.
By 1781, Stirling was assigned to command the forces in the northern frontier as the Continentals moved south to Yorktown. With the war all but over, Stirling, in poor health, died on active duty on January 15th, 1783, age 56. He was buried in famed Trinity Church in New York City.
However, his legacy of service would not be allowed to end there. With War Department General Order No. 194 on December 27th, 1904, he became the namesake to “Battery Alexander,” a two-gun 12-inch caliber disappearing battery at Fort Hancock, NJ. Construction began in 1898, and it was accelerated for the outbreak of the Spanish American War. Completion and transfer to the Coast Artillery was in July, 1899.
Battery Alexander is unique, as it is the two northern emplacements of what is called “9-Gun Battery” at Ft. Hancock. A total of six 12-inch guns and three 10-inch guns were emplaced there between 1896 and 1902. Battery Alexander’s guns face due north, and cover the west into Sandy Hook and Raritan Bay, as well as the approaches to the harbor from the southeast. The Battery enjoyed an exceptionally long service life of 43 years. The guns were finally salvaged for a scrap drive in early 1943. During the Cold War, the vacant emplacement was used as ammunition storage for 90-mm Anti-Aircraft guns until the Nike missiles came online in 1954.
Today, the Battery is in poor shape, with trees and vegetation growing through the concrete. The National Park Service has classified Battery Alexander as a “ruin,” meaning it will never, ever be restored or even preserved.
Although the emplacement may be vanishing, the incredible legacy of General William Alexander, Lord Stirling, the Battery that carries his name, and the service of the US Army Coast Artillerymen that manned it across four decades is in the safest of hands, here.

A powerful storm in the eastern United States resulted in 2 deaths and 1.1 million people losing power.
On Monday, a severe storm swept across the eastern United States, including hail and lightning, resulting in at least two deaths, thousands of US flights being canceled or delayed, and over 1.1 million households and businesses losing power. A tornado warning was issued for the Washington D.C. area by the National Weather Service, with a special statement warning of the significant threat of destructive and localized damaging hurricanes, the possibility of large hail, tornadoes, and even strong tornadoes.
The storm had a widespread impact, with tornado watches and warnings issued across 10 states from Tennessee to New York. The National Weather Service reported that over 29.5 million people were under tornado watch on Monday afternoon.
According to the Anderson County Coroner's Office, a 15-year-old boy in South Carolina was tragically killed when a tree fell on him as he arrived at his grandparents' house during the storm. In Florence, Alabama, a 28-year-old man was fatally struck by lightning, as reported by WAAY-TV.
Based on data from flight tracking service FlightAware, as of Monday evening, over 2,600 flights had been canceled and nearly 7,900 flights were delayed in the US. Many of the cancellations were at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which was recovering from disruptions caused by Sunday's storm.
The Federal Aviation Administration mentioned that flight routes were being adjusted to divert planes away from the storm over the East Coast.
Meteorologist Chris Strong from the National Weather Service described it as one of the most significant severe weather events to affect the central Atlantic in some time, in a Facebook live briefing.
The storm was expected to hit major population areas later in the afternoon and early evening, prompting federal workers to leave work early to avoid being stuck in their cars during high winds, hail, and tornadoes. Residents were strongly advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings, either at home or at their workplaces.
The storm led to the postponement of a Major League Baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals. In Maryland, the National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for Tuesday after a rapid rainfall of 4 inches (10.2 cm).
According to outage data, by evening, over 1.1 million customers were without power in states along the storm's path, including Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia. The Knoxville Utilities Board tweeted that the damage to their Tennessee service area was extensive and widespread, potentially taking several days to restore.
News media reported that trees and power lines collapsed in several states, falling onto roads and some homes. In Westminster, Maryland, a row of utility poles fell, as reported by WJLA-TV. In Hockessin, Delaware, the roof of at least one residence was blown off, according to 6ABC-TV.
"We saw the clouds come in, and you could hear a rumbling in the distance," said Tom Tomovich, whose home was damaged. "We went into the house, and we're on the first floor, and before we could even blink, the wind was coming in the back of our house."
