“Litter raking” was once common in many mountain and upland areas where alternative sources of bedding, such as straw, were scarce. This material was used as bedding for livestock in winter, and beech leaves were even used in the Alps to fill mattresses for human use. With the advent of alternative sources, this practice has largely been abandoned. However, the use of litter raking now appears to be very suitable for restoration and maintenance management to conserve the biodiversity of open forests.

I translated some of the weirdest Norwegian pornclips out there. It's sfw unless if you/your boss know norwegian words..

Context: I used to have a Filipino friend (we are no longer friends) and I had told him about, and shown him this SFW clip of a horrible, weird Norwegian full length porno movie. I hardly delete anything I write, so I still have the translation that I gave to him.

The translation for the clip is as follows;

The brown haired man is the man with the hat/the man who is fishing

"To get some" and "to get a catch" at the end of the 1st part means that they now want to get ladies...not fish.

"If you walk far...Pussy you'll get/Langt å gå, fitte å få" is a dirty spin on a quote from some Norwegian fairytale but I can't remember which one it is and I don't remember what it's supposed to say instead of "pussy/fitte".

There are at least two random naked women and they talk over the men and it's difficult to hear what they are saying (I have seen the entire NSFW movie. Please don't be a fool like me!)

Coppicing, a traditional forest management method dating back to the Neolithic period, involves periodically cutting trees to the ground level, taking advantage of their ability to resprout. This technique allows for cyclical harvesting of wood, providing a stable supply of firewood. Despite its decline with the advent of fossil fuels, there has been a recent resurgence in coppicing for its benefits to biodiversity and as a sustainable fuelwood source.

helpful hint for non-Norwegians streaming Rykter

several youtube channels have posted translations of S1 and S2 with English subtitles (and we hope they will do the same for S3). here’s one example:

but in the meantime, if you don’t speak Norsk and still want to stream the episodes as soon as they premiere, read below!

i recommend using the NRK dual subtitles chrome extension!!

step 1. add this extension to your chrome browser

step 2. access the episode on NRK’s website using your preferred VPN to bypass the geoblock

step 3. click the extension and choose your preferred language

step 4. turn on captions and press play. the Norsk subtitles will appear side by side with your preferred language in real time

i have used this with other shows as a language learning tool and find the translations to be fair quality. occasionally the translator will throw a wrong word in, especially with slang words, different dialects, etc. but in my experience they are usually descent enough to get the major plot points of the episode even if you don’t speak the language!!

Free Norwegian Language Resources

I see many learners looking for Duolingo alternatives and realized I haven’t shared any new resources in a bit! So here are my personal favorite Norwegian learning resources that are completely free!

NTNU’s NoW (Norwegian on the Web) — Online independent learning course developed by a Norwegian university that progresses from beginner to intermediate level. Includes reading, audio, practice exercises, and grammar! [A1-B1 level]

Norskappen (App store link) — Fantastic vocab practice with real human spoken audio! There is also preposition practice, article gender practice, and verb practice. The app’s creator actively listens to and incorporates user feedback (link to Reddit post by creator asking for feedback). [A1-B1 level]

Norsklærer Karense on Youtube — Grammar and vocabulary videos produced by a Norwegian language teacher. Lots of in-depth explanations of grammar with examples, differences between similar words, and advice and information about taking the Norskprøven (Norway’s official language test). [A1-B2+ level]

If you are aiming to take the Norskprøven at B2 level, your best resources are often going to be the ones not designated as a “course” — reading articles on NRK or Store norske leksikon, watching Norwegian news/debate shows and podcasts (since B2 level involves being able to reason and defend an opinion) like Debatten or Dagsnytt 18, and lastly, producing your own language in written or spoken format. For that last one it helps to find a tutor who can practice with you and correct your writing, but besides that you can really come a long way for free!
