Boar helmets
Tumblr media
Boar statuettes have been used as helmet decorations during the Germanic age both in mainland Europe, as well as Anglo-Saxon England and Vendel Scandinavia.
But could you have guessed that boars have been used as helmet decorations since Celtic times? More accurately I should say Hallstatt era Iron Age, but it does mean that the idea of warriors mirroring themselves with boars as fearless creatures in combat, has been in existence before the Roman conquest of Europe and has managed to survive up until the Christianization of all layers of society around 800-900 AD.
The helmet above is the “Benty Grange helmet”. Contrary to more famous helmets, is that this particular one was plated with horn rather than metal. The boar on top may have been decorated with hair running along its back. This was the first Anglo-Saxon helmet ever to be discovered, found in 1848.
Weston Park Museum - Sheffield, England
Museum nr. Unknown
Found at Benty Grange farm, Monyash - Derbyshire, England

She came from the sky, an angel of might
She saw him lying there, his eyes losing their light
She knelt by his side, and whispered in his ear
"Rejoice, warrior, Valhalla is near"
She lifted his head, and cradled him in her arms
She sang him a song, of glory and charms
She kissed his brow, and wiped away his tears
"Let go, brother, Valhalla is near"
She carried him away, to the realm of the gods
She brought him to sit and feast, among the heroes and bards
She smiled at him, and gave him one last cheer
"You earned this, brother, for Valhalla is here"

GRǓNDSIGZ
“THE BLOOD BATHER”
From Kingdom Of The Kaiju
Son of Ahnandraukon. High General Of 3d, 5th, and 8th Æseir legions. Raised since boyhood to be an unflinching killer. A warrior who craves the glory of battle. Ahnandraukon had created a monster. One who is desperate for his approval, slowly coming to hate his demanding and callus father. A brute unable to control his fits of rage, Grǔndsigz, makes enemies everywhere he goes, even in his own family. He seeks strife, enjoying conflict wherever it is to be had. It certainly doesn’t help that Ahnandraukon pits his children against each other, hoping to see the strongest and most worthy rise to the challenge.
He is feared by humanity. Infamous for his brutality in battle. Slaying untold thousands in the wake of his wrath. His atrocities have helped sprout resistance movements across Æseir territory. Turning once loyal humans into enemies of the empire. A fact that the Beowulf Foundation uses as a rallying cry. The only reason Ahnandraukon seems to keep him around is because he is ferocious weapon, one the king Kaiju wields against his enemies.
What will happen when this dog of war breaks free of his leash? When he has broken free of Ahnandraukon’s control? What terror will the Blood Bather wreak upon the world?

Krom, the half-giant zealot barbarian who originally hailed from the Northlands, but now assists the Circle of Swords in Neverwinter Wood. This character is from "Zelyra Erenaeth: Origins," the prequel to "The Grey Warriors," a retelling of a completed Out of the Abyss (Dungeons and Dragons) campaign.
