Anyways I recently got back into playing The Arcana and I just really like Asra they are such an interesting character and Faust how could you not love her she’s so cute so this is a birthday drawing for them and for me because I like drawing them.

(I also know there’s controversy around some of the creators I’m aware I just really missed this game bc I used to play it back in middle school)

it just bewilders me that anyone could write a character as perfect as julian and then so obviously begin to hate him. it's so weird how much open unabashed contempt these writers have for the character their game is basically about.

i've said this before but i think that the prologue was written for a different version of the game, before the team decided to make julian the heel to asra's face and the butt of every joke. "a gift from a witch who fears commitment" was so obviously meant to be foreshadowing for a major plot point, but they just hand-wave it away in the story with like two lines of dialogue and a prayer.

"no, no, that was a red herring!!" no it wasn't. julian himself is already the red herring, making his implied backstory another red herring is the definition of a hat on a hat. asra and julian were clearly written for asra to be the bad guy in the asrian divorce, but then someone (everyone? i don't know) vetoed it because god fucking forbid we make asra look like an asshole even once.

asra is the writers' favorite and it's extremely obvious. he basically has no flaws, to the point of legit cliche. oh mc my only flaw is loving you TOO much. so even though julian is already written with a very clear archetype of "guy who hates magic because he got his heart broken by a witch" that comes through in basically everything about him, they have to paper over it in the story because we can't make asra look mean!

so they just make up for their shitty coverup writing by being like haha isn't julian silly? he was wrong about everything and he doesn't like magic hehe haha. leeches! meanwhile the bones of the characters they actually wrote are in asra too, because it's clear he's meant to have his "villain moments," he's meant to have sharper edges and even be scary, but someone decided that he has to be an uwu softboy and ruined him in the process.

as always i am not looking for a debate, i will block you.

Asra had gone along one of his many journeys, looking for herbs and whatever else he may need. What he didn't expect to find, was you. A merfolk. He's heard of them of course, but he never expected to find someone quite like you. You were stunning from the moment he'd laid eyes on you.

You'd spotted the traveler walking by your lake and decided to say hello, not getting many in these parts of the forest. As you popped your head out of the water you gave him a wave. He smiled to you, seeming mesmerized by your presence.

"Amazing." You faintly heard him whisper before he walked closer to you. Sitting down at the edge of the water front. He had no real destination he needed to be anyway, why not stay and talk to the angelic merfolk? "Do you have a name?" Asra asked. Before pausing and tilting his head to the side just a bit," can you understand me?"

When you nodded, he smiled at that. Fascinating. "My name is Y/N." You told him.

"Y/N. What's it like living in the water?" He had many questions for you. He'd be here as long as you allowed him to be. So, Asra made himself more comfortable. His knees came up to his chest, arms folded over top. Then Asra rested his chin on the centre. The smile never leaving his lips. Love might be a strong word to use on someone he'd just met. But he did have a deep attraction to you.

"Better than living on land." You couldn't help but tease the traveler, whose name you've yet to learn. Asra laughed at that and nodded. Fully agreeing with what you were saying.

"Oh, I'm quite sure it is." He then also realized he never introduced himself, his cheeks turned flushed and Asra cleared his throat. Clearly a little awkward now," I'm Asra. The Magician."

"Magician?" Your eyes widened a bit. Now looking at him, Asra did have that mystical vibe. Even in the way he dressed. You've always wondered what magicians were like. There weren't many amongst your people but you'd heard the stories. The legends of great beings that could control the forces. Just as Asra had been intrigued by merfolk, you'd been intrigued by magicians. Maybe it was fate you'd crossed paths. "Could you teach me, Asra?"

Asra looked a little surprised by the request. Teach a merfolk magic? He wasn't sure if that had ever been done before. But he certainly wasn't about to waste an opportunity like this," of course I can." Asra gave you that smile of his. Little did either of you know, that in this moment... your lives would be changed forever.

ok long post ish and ramble:

prefacing this with: nonbinary people can use whatever fucking pronouns they want, binary neo or otherwise. HOWEVER! the constant use of he over they for masc nonbinary people(if they don't use he or use they/he) feels to me the same way people will use they over she for trans women.

getting into it: I haven't played the game in years, and i do remember them sometimes being referred by he/him by other characters, but imma say it plainly the um,,,arcana is not well written. Especially when they basically dipped and sold to Dorian I haven't touched it since then.

Asra being nonbinary but still using he/him without any kinda like, gender or clarification that they prefer to use those pronouns just kinda feels like they were slapping labels on things. Not every story needs a coming out or identity conversation of 'im xyz these are my pronouns' by there's ways to write a story that includes that nuance without being like 'heres our 'nonbinary' character!' *proceeds to treat them as a cis guy and never elaborate on that*

Even a small snippet of something along the lines of 'ive tried different things but he just feels right' 'how other people perceive me doesn't bother me, they are free to call me what they like' ANYTHING there's so many different approaches to gender and a quick little line would've 100% change things, it doesn't have to be deep. Just make it known that's the characters choice 🤷

I love seeing more masc nonbinary characters, I'm fucking sick of them not getting any good gender development stories or continually being treated as cis (or feminized unnecessarily) by fandom, and sometimes even by their own creators.

Hi! I actually received this ask last night, but I was way too tired to Google it. As I'm more well rested this morning, I've looked up Asra from the Arcana, and learned that he is canonically a he/him nonbinary bisexual.

Now, no hate to this anon. I'm sure they're sick and tired of bisexual erasure. I don't blame them in the slightest.

But this game is about me guessing. I am not a fan of The Arcana, and I hadn't even heard of Asra until my friend dropped their name in my inbox. I'm fact, I'd guess about 75% of the characters currently in my inbox, I have no clue who they are.

Again, though, no hate to this anon. I understand that it can be tiring to see an identity erased in fiction; hell, I'm aromantic/asexual, of course I know! But this game isn't about trying to be canon. I sincerely have no clues about most of these characters, and simply are making silly little guesses about their orientation, sexuality, and disorders.

Asra from the Arcana is canonically a bisexual nonbinary person that uses he/him pronouns. My sincere guess based on appearence was that he was transneutral, nonbinary, and a soft butch lesbian. I was wrong, I will fully admit that. It was not my intention to hurt anyone who decided to partake in my silly little guessing game!

I truly do hope that you were not too upset by this, anon. I wasn't trying to hurt or erase anything, I was simply trying my best to make an exciting little joke that my friends would enjoy. I fully admit that I got Asra's identity wrong in my guess, and despite my intentions, erased his identity in the process. I promise that with this game, my intention will never be to hurt people, only to make people smile.

Another thing since I'm apparently venting today:

While it is perfectly fine and honestly encouraged to headcanon characters as trans fem, trans masc or nonbinary... Don't use a canonically cis dude to bash a canonically nonbinary character.

Saw someone dunking on Venture being too feminine and then showing four "masculine nonbinary characters" as examples.

....One was a robot and the other was a cis man, Asra from the Arcana. He's very pretty but this doesn't strengthen your argument, especially when Venture is arguably more masculine visually than Asra. They're a cute little dirty gremlin and I honestly am considering going back to playing. I miss the game but I'm so tired of all the negative shit in the fandom and that the devs get put through.
