“Thank you so much for having us,” Akarsha’s mother was saying, smiling and waving to Noelle’s parents as all of them were walking back to the front door. “Dinner was excellent. Now say goodbye, Akarsha,” she said, patting her daughter on the back.
“Goodbye, Akarsha,” said Akarsha, grinning around the room at everyone, and this one minor note of truth, of real Akarsha-brand silliness, seemed to bring Noelle back to her senses.
“I’ve just remembered,” Noelle said suddenly, and the eyes of everyone in the room turned to find her. She blinked, forcing herself to keep talking. “I have to give Akarsha something for school. Up in my room.” She pointed to the ceiling, where her room sat somewhere above them.
“Oh,” said Akarsha’s mother, smiling politely at Noelle. “Well, that’s very nice of you.” She turned to Akarsha. “Akarsha dear, we’ll be waiting out in the car, so don’t take too long now.” And with that, Akarsha’s parents disappeared out the front door.
“Come with me,” said Noelle under her breath, grabbing Akarsha by the arm and leading her from the dining room before her own parents could object.
“Hey there,” said Akarsha when they were safely out of earshot, smiling at Noelle and allowing herself to be marched up the stairs. Noelle couldn’t help noticing the softness of the sleeve of Akarsha’s dress, nor the feeling of Akarsha’s arm beneath the thin fabric. She tried, in vain, to force such thoughts from her mind.
“How did you three manage to pull this off?” she asked, the moment they were alone in her room. “This,” she hissed, jabbing a finger at Akarsha in her fancy dress, “is not you. And those,” she pointed through her window to where Akarsha’s parents were waiting patiently by their car, are not your parents. They are not the same goofy people I’ve met at your house before. They just can’t be.”
“Relax,” said Akarsha, holding up her hands and smiling sheepishly. “I can in fact pull off a dress when I want to. At least, I hope I can?” Her eyes widened a bit, and her smile faltered for just a moment before she forced it back onto her face. “And they are adults, you know?" she continued, her gaze following Noelle's pointed finger out the window and down to her parents. "They are capable of acting like it, from time to time.”
“And how did you get them to say all that stuff?” Noelle demanded, her tone still unbelieving.
“Geez,” said Akarsha, not quite able to meet Noelle’s eyes this time. “I told them it was important to me, alright? That’s all.”
“That’s all?” Noelle pressed, unsatisfied with that answer, both because it didn’t seem to be the whole truth and also because, deep down in an almost unconscious part of her soul, she felt the smallest pang of longing at the thought of the lengths that Akarsha’s parents were willing to go just to facilitate their own daughter’s foolish, heartfelt desires.
“Yeah, that’s all,” confirmed Akarsha, blushing now. “I just told them that it was important to me, and...” Her voice trailed off.
“And?” Noelle repeated, pulling herself up out of that deep dark pit in her chest and back into her bedroom, back to her interrogation of Akarsha.
Akarsha turned away from her, and Noelle could see her ears turning red. “I mean, I also told them that, uh, that you were important to me too.”
“Oh,” said Noelle, watching Akarsha’s back. A small smile formed on her lips entirely against her will. “...okay, then.”

First chapter of The Camping Trip Arc is out now, and I know they don't actually go camping in this one but c'mon, it's only the first chapter. We'll get there, trust me.
Also, this chapter goes out to whoever sent me that anonymous ask to see if I'd gone on a hiatus after like six days without posting. Ur so right to do so, someone's gotta keep me honest after all.
Love u all!
