In photographer Nona Faustine's solo show "My Country," self-portraits taken on the streets of New York City sit next to partially obstructed shots of national monuments. In both cases, the result is a frank rendering of America's disgraceful and all-too-buried legacy of marginalization, but the two sets of photographs work on different scales. For the self-portraits, Faustine places herself, a black Brooklynite in her thirties, at the center of shameful sites in New York history: at, for instance, the intersection of Wall Street and Water Street, the location of a former slave market. Faustine's valiant presence — she often appears looking at the camera and wearing nothing more than a pair of white heels — distills the history to a personal, human plane. For the monument photos, she puts a severe black line over images of political landmarks ranging from the Statue of Liberty to the Lincoln Memorial; the graphic interruption stands for the scores of mistreated Americans for whom such structures and their supposed representation of the common good have remained inaccessible. Whether gesturing at injustice in this stark manner, or channeling it through her own body, Faustine makes long-term issues newly urgent. Detail from Liberty or Death, Sons of Africa, Washington Monument, 2016. Courtesy the artist and Baxter Street at the Camera Club of New York

I yelled “ @johannafateman wrote about my work!” in the locker room when @mckenziewark3000 texted me that #wewishanamendietawasstillalive was featured in @artforum in the article #fullyloaded A woman said,”Yes, I didn’t even know who she was until you did that protest.” “I was so mad and I did t want anyone to forget her,” I said. So much if my work is about sexual violence and finding anti rape culture and #sexualjustice and I am so thankful to everyone who participated in these protest performances with us and #nowaveperformancetaskforce Part of the reason I was mad about #anamendieta s erasure/the murderer’s rehabilitation in the eyes of the art world/money was because of Mendieta’s graphic and gratifying representations of rape. I have Ana’s work inside me and it will always be there, because she showed me visually that my world was real, that art is a ritual and can help heal, that I wasn’t alone. I am going to work further with #thefeministartproject on rape and sex and power in 2018/2019 and I am so thankful to the humans making this work, to the artists who helped me save my life Fateman writes eloquently about art and sex and Power and I am truly fucking honored to have our work beside photos of @simoneyvetteleigh and @nonafaustine among others Power and strength and compassion and hope to us all in 2018. Thank you. #sexualviolence #rapeculture #rape #sexualjustice #feministart #feministperformanceart #protest #artandactivism

Just came across this performance photo taken on Wall St. Wildly I was thinking of burning a flag at the African American burial ground yesterday (4th of July) but got talked out it cuz I would prolly get charged w/ terrorism. This piece is called "From her Body Came Their Greatest Wealth" by #NONAFAUSTINE "Slavery was introduced to Manhattan (then New Amsterdam) in 1626 and, for two centuries, remained a significant part of New York life. In fact, the New York City Common Council declared Wall Street the city’s first official slave market on December 13, 1711, deeming it a space where human beings could be enslaved for the day or for the week. The slave market took the shape of a wooden structure with open sides, and held approximately 50 people at a time. It operated as such, on the corner of Wall Street and Pearl Street in the heart of the Financial District, until 1762. Slavery was legally abolished in New York in 1827.” #secrethistoryofnewyork #thereareblackpeopleinthefuture #odetothelieswebeentold
