#fuckyoupayme selfie in the bathroom before therapy. I got this last night and had to wear it today, even though it might not be appropriate for everything I have to do today. This morning Vera turned her whole body away from me “What?” I asked. “Can you put something on over your tank top?” I considered a sweater, then thought of my menopause sweats and said, “I will keep it covered completely when I am with you.” I think that was a good compromise. Thank you to @rjampol for the bodysuit and to her and to Project for Empty Space and @browngirlcurator and @pesgrabback @projectforemptyspace for the fabulous party last night. I walked in and my body yearned for kinetic experience. I felt exuberant and I danced. I made an ornament. I showed some people my studio. I ate cookies. I talked to artists @ventiko @tinyscissors and more. In therapy I think I pinpointed the moment when my voice was taken away from me. Yesterday I visited with feminist architect @donutholestudio and this morning I ran into my old friend Maren from college and we talked about the guy who was dating us both at the same time. Well, having sex with me and wooing her. “That fucker” she said. “I’m sorry,” I said. I am happy to be alive. #fuckcancer #feministart #feministperformanceart

I’m making a film. That’s what I’m doing. I’m doing art and making giant interior prints and a We Are All Pink Inside installation, and I am going to finish that rape book I’ve been working on for 10 years, AND I am starting a film project. It’s about cancer and rape- about how cancer forced certain reckonings, how I have to look at the past with a clear eye to let myself be loved in the future. And I hope it will be funny and weird. And maybe I’m taking on a big challenge to make the other challenges seem small. More do- able. I have had some emails with an old friend, an old flame, and I’m so tortured that I don’t have a book yet. And he replied with a story about letting go of the dream of the book. I have to figure out how to live. My numbers are low. I was terrified at the doctor this week, so convinced the cancer would be back. But it’s not. Maybe not yet. But maybe just...NOT. And the people I know who are not in remission, I want to love them in any way I can. I think if the old ladies on Devoe Street, who would say, “At least you have your health!” to each other when they said goodnight after watching TV on the street in beach chairs in the summer. Oh those summer streets. And now,what am I going to do with my health? Fight patriarchal systems, fight oppression, fight for representation of women and women of color and native women and LGBTQ. Tell stories. Tell my own story a million different ways. Never get it “right.” Strive for beauty and belief. Now it’s sinking in that I have this one glorious life. When I was growing up I wanted to be an artist. Then a ballerina, then a movie star, then a performance artist, then an actor, then a writer, then a solo show person, then a mother, then a curator, then a producer, then I became things I didn’t expect: resentful, harder, stuck. Then on my way to being unstuck I got cancer. And I really think it’s helped me . Cancer is a reckoning. A healing. A confrontation. A way to myself. One week ago tonight I was onstage doing my new show. My friend Emily came from Oakland! @the_yam_mam Karen Finley came on Friday! One of my idols. Getting to the point where I could get it on stage was so painful. It hurt so much. The making of the script, and the fighting the I’m-Not-Good-Enough’s and now .... I feel fine. Good even. I just have to keep doing the work. I can do that. Read and tweak and read and change and think about what I want to give the audience. So excited to keep working on this. New Interior Portraits taken today at @acehotel #aceair Thank you to my portrait sitters @lagaccia and @couchpotatovideo_room1and2 What is a portrait? It is often a face. Or full body with with signifiers in the background. The focus is on exterior presentation. A selfie is a self portrait. Social media lets us see each other- and visibility matters. Representation matters. Social justice and sexual justice and climate justice and anti-racism justice work with images to tell stories. What does it mean when we put the inside in the outside? What does it mean when we turn internal spaces into external spaces? Especially anuses and vaginas and genitals that have often been places of pain and trauma. They are also spaces of potential pleasure. Capitalism wants us to be disconnected from our bodies. Close up Day 4 - lots of flaking, still redness. No good pics from day 3- I wore a ton of makeup and my skin was really dry and makeup flaking off. Also Day 2 on the bus. I know this isn’t fair. I’m using no estrogen and cancer and documentary work as excuses- really people do this all the time because they want to. It’s not fair because if everyone does this to look “young” or “attractive” then those without money aren’t seen as young or attractive. Jut like health care is only for the rich, so is a certain kind of beauty. I am SO conflicted about this and want to talk about it while I do it. An investment in my work. I saw Vice yesterday and it was great and after snuck into Stan and Ollie and men get award for growing jowls. Almost every women on that screen had had something done to her jawline. And in The Favorite he shoots the women from underneath for Power but also to show the undersides of their chins. I don’t “feel bad about my neck” as Nora Ephron wrote. I feel enraged and complacent and scared. Scared of dying, or losing something, what, I forgot it but I lost it , I forgot it, did I bring it with me? My skin is dry and tight and itchy. No one needs to do this shit. Everyone is beautiful naked.
