I remember when Mike told me that he’d talked to a writer at The Village Voice about our trip to see Palmolive. Wait, you mean the actual media was interested? After all, the Voice was not just New York’s, but arguably America’s most important “alternative” newspaper at that time.

Alas, the piece that ran got some of the facts wrong (e.g. Jeremy was my friend, not Mike’s, and Jeremy and I actually went to see Palmolive first). And my involvement in the entire endeavor was downgraded to just a “friend” that happened to tag along.

Okay, whatever. It was still kind of cool to see my name in The Village Voice. Little did I know I’d end up working there less than a few years later, no less in a role where I got to call the shots on how we featured music on our web site.

2020 Was a difficult year for many. We experienced the loss of a number of people dear to us. Just as the world was beginning to fall apart in so many ways we got word that we lost a dear friend and comrade. We want to honor and remember Edith Louise Goldberg (who many in NYC knew prior to their transition as Josh.) Edith was a beautiful and passionate soul. We met her in Zuccotti Park during Occupy Wall Street where she was a significant and impactful presence. We broke bread at Grub freegan community dinners, and painted banners together for Occupy Sandy. After she relocated to Massachusetts some of us kept in touch on occasion and got to see her while she was sharing food as part of Food Not Bombs at the National Day of Mourning in Plymouth Massachusetts. Edith was such a sweet person, someone burning with passion. Their presence and drive in this movement for a better world will continue to be missed but not forgotten. Edith’s family and friends asked that people moved to do so make donations in her memory to @translifeline. re: the village voice ending their print edition

if you follow me on twitter or on instagram, you know i’m constantly complaining about new NYC, specifically, the village.  i don’t have a preference between east and west.  i spent tons of time between both as a teenager.

we’d start on W4 and work our way all over the place.  our first stop was always st. marks.  the village voice was often picked up, and for my friends and i, was a way to see which upcoming shows we were going to.  sure, eventually we’d read articles (at least i did), but going straight to the ad pages for concerts was my favorite.

the village voice made me feel like i was alright.  i wouldn’t say “normal”, because what fun is normal?  accepted?

i felt accepted enough walking around downtown, but the VV definitely helped.

i know it’s not dying, but the print version being gone is a big piece of it dying.  just like that time they let musto go...

(Pay $400.00 a week the whole time.) 🌿 I was not ready yet - by a long-shot.
