caveat here of how none of this really matters and it’s my opinion, but I’m kinda just. :standing-man: about how divorced m!viera are from masculinity in fandom spaces. like how they’re always referred to as “cute” and “adorable” and even the term bunboy kinda just makes me feel ick. there’s always this stereotypical box of feminine/gay man that they get shoved into—cutesy and demure and pretty. like express gender and such in your own way and find freedom in that—I’m not gonna be upset about that. it’s the overall opinion that these characters—and by extension their players—are only part of this stereotype

my assorted vaguely specbio themed headcanons for ffxiv:

most mixed race kids are vanishingly rare because of biological incompatibility. different races have different gestational periods and, in the case of au ra, a wholly different reproduction than anyone else. setting aside size difference issues, roegadyn, elezen, and hyur are compatible with each other. miqo'te and hrothgar are semi-compatible.

re: above, i hc au ra reproduce in a vaguely seahorse manner. male au ra fertilize fem au ra, fem au ra then have a small window of time to pass the fetus/egg/whatever to a male au ra or her body reabsorbed it. as a result theres really no such thing as an oopsie au ra pregnancy. theoretically, if a non-au ra man was able to fertilize a fem au ra, she could then pass the pregnancy to a male au ra willing to surrogate for them and have a half au ra baby that way, but that's assuming a non-au ra man COULD make a viable fetus to begin with

somewhat similarly, fem miqo'te really only ovulate when stimulated by the pseudo barbs on a male miqo'te's penis, which means it's nearly impossible for a fem miqo'te to get pregnant by anyone else. thats why so many of the ~courtesans~ you see are miqo'te

hyur and elezen pregnancies last 9 months, which is why theyre fairly compatible. miqo'te pregnancies last 6, so they often can't carry a non-miqo'te baby to term. viera pregnancies last 12 months, and their bodies usually fully reject a non-viera fetus as a result. They also have an extremely low rate of conception to begin with.

gender relatedly, au ra would have zero concept of binary genders. they dont actually have men and women, just the ones who carry the baby and the ones that dont. your pronouns, gender identity, etc are all completely unrelated and fully up to you

viera also have a very different idea of gender - they go based on what you do. if you want to have, do have, or want to raise babies, you're a Village Viera. pronouns & such are entirely unrelated. if you cannot or don't want to have or raise babies, you can be a Wood Warder. pronouns and presentation are your own business. Plenty of viera have "mismatched" secondary sex characteristics (warders with breasts, village viera with facial hair, etc) in part because of how sexually non-dimorphic they are. canonically you literally can't tell them apart until they've reached puberty.

I saw this prompt, cogitated on it, chewed on it, etc. etc. It's sat in my inbox for a bit now.

Full disclosure here: I've had bad experiences with strap-ons, dildos, penetration, and toys that use penetration. It's not something that I talk about openly; it's one of those topics that I, as a flesh-male*/non-binary individual, feel embarassed to talk or write about. It's something that I don't feel comfortable talking about with my friends. I'm surprised I got that prompt written about sex toys, to be honest with you.

Just before she awoke from sleep, Marget Djt-Gilda felt her shoulder being shaken roughly. The shake (or was it a shove?) was welcome, given that her dreams of late were nothing but everflowing beams of light. The viera came to, slowly, to the smell of charcoal, spices, and something rich and meaty roasting over a campfire. She hadn't bothered to take her clothes off, or done much of anything before sleep took her.

Marget blew stray stands of her chestnut brown hair away from her eyes and brushed bits of straw of grass away from her metal leggings. She was a mess, today, tonight, whenever the Hells today decided it was, and she didn't care who knew it. "Gods, no more faeries," she mumbled as she slowly rose to her feet, eyes darting around her for any signs of the flying pranksters. "No more Light, no more sin-eaters, and no more faeries."

A towel, dripping wet from one end, came flying towards her, hitting her square on the right shoulder. "Don't worry yourself, love, there're plenty more sin-eaters and faeries out there. And Dikaiosyne." Granson's voice was harsh today, whenever it was, cracked by the stale air of the stable the two hunters came to shelter in.

"And Dikaiosyne," Marget echoed, using the towel to rub dirt and gunk away from her eyes. "We're going to Pla Enni today? I might have a lead on the Claws of Orthus."

"So you say," Granson replied skeptically. "I don't know how you manage to be around all these fae folk without going mad. Must be one of the Warrior of Darkness's powers I didn't know about." He used a nearby water trough to splash water on his face, and what parts of his body that weren't covered by leather and armor. "Don't know why you're getting dressed."

Marget cocked her head and slung the towel she was holding across her shoulders. "Eh? We're going out, that's what we agreed on. It's what you wanted to do."

"No, no. Not right now. I have other plans, if you'll hear them." (Odd, Marget thought to herself.) He was unfastening his gauntlets. "Found something that might interest you, in the haybales." The young man pointed his head towards the trough. "Go on, have a peek. Not like there's anyone else around to care."

*Alright, then. I'll play your game.*

There, wrapped up in ragged burlap, was a carved wooden length that resembled someone's shaft. Someone with heft, Marget thought, turning the toy over in her hands, tugging on the rough leather strips that made a crude "harness" through slots.

She coughed, even though a smile was threatening to cross her face. "You can't be serious."

"I am." Gods, Granson was stripped down to his unders by now; the tip of his own, fleshy length was waking up and stretching itself out. The man worked fast. "Fancy me giving you some relief?" Straw crunched underneath his nearly-bare feet as he got close, putting his hands around Marget's waist. "You've been good to me so far, and we've enjoyed some nights together." Hot breath teased the back of her neck. "I can trust you."

" 's important, that. Trust." Marget snaked her arm up round Granson's bare shoulders, teasing and stroking his short hair. "I hate to disappoint, but, I'm not in the mood to be the mount." She'd turn to face him, let his tip feel that welcoming space between her legs. "Get down."

The knight grunted. "Down? As in, you mean-" He'd have little time to react before his partner's hand reached for the wooden length, firmly grasped it, and playfully pushed him down onto the straw floor. He found his legs unceremoniously hoisted into the air, enough for his balls to flop over to one side and his bare arse be exposed to the wind.

"I thought I said, 'Get down.' Your ears full of wax, dear?" Marget was grinning while fussing with the length's leather, figuring out on the fly how to make it tight against her groin. "Always wanted to know how these things worked. Tonight's a good night as any to learn, don't you think?"

Granson knew better than to move. The woman had a powerful will, when she put her mind to something, and tonight would be a powerful, thrusting reminder of that.

"Aye. …well? Get on with it then. Don't keep me waiting."

viera biology and thoughts. For reference I use "viera" to refer to the race/species as a whole and "Viera" to refer to the society and culture of the Wood, but I am also an inconsistent with capitalization...

"Because a Viera’s male or female characteristics are not present at birth, parents typically opt to bestow their children with names that are considered appropriate for any sex and gender." (staff post "Viera Naming Conventions")

Now this could mean a few things. First is that it is difficult to sex an infant meaning there are no external genitalia at birth as well as that it is considered culturally taboo to do so. For example at a glance new born chickens cannot be sexed, it is possible to do so but you need to look very carefully. The second interpretation is that like many animal species, viera spend their early lives without a sex, in that reproductive structures do not exist at that life stage. Many fish species, alligators, and many other species are like this in that the final sex of the adult is determined by environmental cues or other factors rather than their genotype, so before they are sexually mature adults they are of indeterminate sex. Another option is that viera may be on a genetically determinate pathway (ex: sex chromosomes exist), it's just there's no way to tell (without genetic testing) until puberty, unlike humans who develop genitals and gonads as fetuses, theirs do not develop until puberty. The gonads (testes and ovaries) have parallel developmental pathways, where they are both originally the same organ but later develop in the presence of certain signals into the respective gamete producing organs, the details vary species to species, this is also why sex change happens in certain species after adulthood.

Now I want to discuss here the Wandering Dramaturge as he is the primary source of viera lore in FFXIV. He's a random garlean theater playwright who has met a few viera and repeated to the player character some anecdotes, he's objectively a terrible source of information, but he's also the best we have.

At times it is unclear whether he is talking about sex or gender. And there are several layers to this, how does the Wandering Dramaturge differentiate between sex and gender, how do the viera, how do the writers, and how does the localization team? Is this saying when sexual maturation occurs, when gender is chosen, when both occur, or when the earliest possible occurrence is (not when the norm is). My personal interpretation based on no evidence and only personal preference is that this is the earliest possible occurrence, some viera was telling the Dramaturge about someone she knew who went through puberty especially early and he misinterpreted 13 as a benchmark. I imagine kind of like elezen puberty happens a little later for viera more like 15-17. It's also possible this has little to do with sex and is instead when a Viera chooses their societal role/gender.

"Nevertheless, in line with the cultural tradition of adopting a new name to suit one’s newfound environment or identity, many Viera choose to change their names upon reaching adulthood. Though in many cases male Viera will choose a traditionally “masculine” name, or female Viera a traditionally “feminine” one, there are myriad examples of Viera who eschew these patterns by keeping or choosing names that are culturally recognized as non-binary or associated with a different gender. For this reason, it is nearly impossible to determine whether a Viera is male or female by forename alone."("Viera Naming Conventions" staff post)

A city dwelling viera can reasonably be assumed to have had at least 3 names during their lifetime: a birth forest name, an adult forest name, and a city name, through the naming conventions post it can thus be inferred that Viera society places great importance on taking different names upon milestones in one's life to reflect a person's life journey. Some of this is inspired by FFXII but more than man and woman I imagine for Viera gender and societal role is a choice between wood-warder and villager/hearth-keeper/salver-maker (in FFXII) and this largely matches with irl notions of male and female but isn't exactly the same. For a while not I've been puzzling over why Viera society has such strict gender roles yet such gender fluid names, and I think I may have found a decent explanation. The societal roles might be very strict, but the individuals within them and the requirements for those roles are less rigid. So a Viera's life path is less sexually deterministic, and perhaps uncommon (or not) but a young viera choosing to become a wood-warder (or not) would not be taboo.

Much like a later statement, I am choosing to interpret that there is a degree of filtering occurring here, that the Wandering Dramaturge doesn't actually get it but is trying his best to convey what he has heard, yet still it comes through that he finds it strange how wood-warders live lives of solitude whereas I like to imagine it as ascetic eremitism.

16. Did you ever change an oc's identity when they were already established? Why?

Not intentionally, but both Nhe'a and Agatha took a while to announce the specifics of their gender situation, as it were, after I'd already started writing them.

With Nhe'a, I'd known from the start that he's genderqueer and prefers not to talk about it outside of maybe giving his pronouns and letting people assume the details; figuring out that he's trans happened later.

And while I'd been wanting a non-binary viera ever since ShB, I had shelved the thought, so Agatha turning out to be the gender-apathetic type of nb was something of a surprise.

I think the moral of this story is, I do not control the OC knowledge

Honestly? Not too much. Sigrun didn't really have a word for her gender identity until she'd been outside the Skatay range for a while. I have a headcanon that being non-binary is very common for Viera, at least compared to the other spoken races. As for her bisexual identity, she's been pretty confident in that.
