day four: deep roads

prompt fill for the #veilguard30 challenge, behind schedule as i may be. 1k, noah hawke & varric friendship.

Noah despises the Deep Roads. She’s never liked deep, dark places, always hated feeling trapped anywhere. Carver used to mock her for being claustrophobic, and now that he’s not around to hear it she can admit that he’s right; blame it on growing up in a family on the run, but she only ever feels safe when she’s certain of an escape route.

That’s bad enough, and then there’s the darkspawn. Sometimes she still dreams of Ostagar, of soldiers falling left and right as she dragged Carver away, knowing they only escaped because they got lucky. Of that luck running out a few weeks later, of not being quite fast enough to stop Carver from charging that ogre, of the spray of blood as it slammed her baby brother to the ground.

They’re three days into Bartrand's expedition, and it hasn’t gotten any easier for Noah to sleep at night. As the rest of the expedition sleeps, she finds herself lying awake on a too-thin bedroll, trying very, very hard not to think about how much stone lies between her and the sky. The Deep Roads are a maze, even with a detailed map and a Grey Warden by her side. She would never be able to find her way out of here—if the map were lost, if something happened to Anders, she would sure as anything die down here in the dark.

Drop it, she tells herself, in the same tone she uses when she's trying to get her mabari to drop something he shouldn't be eating. You're in it now. Go to sleep.

Easier said than done. In an effort to relax, she tries to focus on everyone around her. Bethany is closest, curled up next to her and breathing the deep breaths of someone who's fast sleep. Noah has always envied Bethany's ability to fall asleep anywhere—but then, Noah has always put in the work to make it possible for Bethany to let her guard down at all. Always her sister's guard dog, ready to do what she must to keep anything that would hurt her at bay.

She was supposed to be that for Carver, too, and she failed. He was killed by the same creatures that call the Deep Roads home, and now she's brought Bethany down to this horrible place, and if anything happens to her it will be Noah's fault, again.

Fuck this. Fuck Bartrand and his expedition, and fuck Varric for getting her in on it, and fuck Anders for having his maps, and fuck Bethany for insisting on coming with her, and—

"Hawke?"

Noah's eyes fly open. Casting about in the low light that permeates the Deep Roads, she can just barely make out Varric, a few feet away as he whispers her name.

Damn it. Belatedly, Noah notices how loud and ragged her breathing has been. It's a wonder she hasn't woken up everyone else in their makeshift camp, but only Varric seems to have taken notice.

"What is it?" She sits up, doing her best to look like she hasn’t spent the last few hours on the brink of panic.

Varric gestures towards the dim remains of the group’s fire. "Come sit, would you? I can't sleep in this damned place."

She pushes herself up and joins him. She’s still breathing faster than she should be, which is embarrassing, frankly. She’s been doing her best to hide how frightened she is, but she knows she’s slipping. They’d fought an ogre earlier today. She’d tried to laugh it off, but she knows Anders and Varric can’t have missed the way she screamed when it lumbered towards Bethany, or how her hands were shaking so hard she’d nearly dropped her daggers. Noah Hawke, who isn’t supposed to be afraid of anything, is losing her mind so loudly that Varric feels a need to intervene.

 Varric, thankfully, does not ask her if she’s alright. Instead, he studies the dying fire, not looking directly at Noah, which gives her a few more seconds to try to compose herself. “I hate it down here.”

She defaults to sarcasm, her first line of defense even when she’s falling apart. “But it’s so lovely this time of year.”

“It’s true there’s no rain. I do hate rain.”

“So you’ve mentioned, a time or five.”

“Hey, complaining about the weather is a small-talk staple that every conversationalist should master.”

“I can complain too. It’s—dark.”

“Is that the best you can do?”

“It’s dark, and it feels like it goes on forever, and I hate it.” She spits it out in a rare burst of honesty.

“I kind of figured.” There are some things Noah never, ever talks about—the way Carver died, the destruction of Lothering, Ostagar in general. But Bethany talks about Carver, and Aveline talks about Ostagar, and Varric is an expert at reading between the lines.

“Yes, well.” She shrugs, uncomfortable with even that much vulnerability, even if she somehow feels a little lighter for it. “The promised fortune at the end of all this keeps me going.”

Varric chuckles. “You and me both, Hawke. What will you do once you're rich? Buy back the Amell estate, I know, but you’ll have coin to spare.”

“Oh, I could use some new daggers. Fancy treats for Ollie, not the cheap stuff we’ve been feeding him. Supplies for Anders’ clinic,” she gestures over to where Anders lies snoring, “Give the poor man a break.”

“No night at the Blooming Rose on that list, I see. Surely you aren’t that far gone for Rivaini already.”

“I—Isabela and I aren’t—“ Noah splutters, then catches Varric’s smirk. “Bastard. I don’t kiss and tell, anyway.”

“I’m sure you don’t.”

Noah shakes her head at him, but she’s laughing despite herself. She’s not sure when she stopped panicking. It’s not quite an evening at the Hanged Man, but Varric is still Varric, and his easy company makes it a little easier to breathe.

They go on like that, talking about nothing in particular. She’s not sure when she falls asleep, curled up in front of the fire, but when Bartrand rouses the group in the morning Varric is still sleeping next to her.

She’ll never feel safe down here. But they’re all still alive, and they’re one day closer to the end, and maybe they just might make it out of this unscathed.

saw a post about the purple (sarcastic/clever personality) options coming back to Dragon Age and it made me think about how none of my OCs are particularly funny people. whatever disposition they have, they are incredibly earnest about it. not that they don't have senses of humour -- they all adore a companion who's quick with a savvy one-liner (Edér, Varric, etc) and Dayir and Noah especially are always game for a giggle but their personal responses to situations are always very... well, serious. they take everything seriously, unless it's a situation meant to be amusing, but even then they are serious about their mirth! not an iota of irony or wink-nudge to be found amongst them.

and yes, just like everything else about them, this is an amplified personal trait (we have learned various forms of "purple personality" type behaviours as survival tactics -- people are often threatened by persistent earnestness, you gotta "lighten up" etc to get along -- but I gotta say I don't value them very highly at all! it is euphoric to take all things with deep and intense seriousness, including mirth and joy!)

a lot of the songs have allusions to rook and varric's relationship. he was the first person rook truly loved (familial) and who rook felt loved him back, cared for him. his loss leaves a hole that will never be filled. otherwise his melancholy that rook does his best to not show is portrayed in the lyrics shared. his tenuous allyship with solas is also featured.

If you could learn one language fluently what would it be?

Hmmmmmm.... I guess learning Esperanto would give me the basics for understanding lots of other languages. Or Latin. Idk, some sort of "universal" language that lets you understand many other languages on at least some basic level

Or Russian. Because a Russian exam is for 9 credits and I really need those. So if there's someone who can grant me the knowledge of fluent Russian overnight I'd really appreciate that, thank you

Now on a more serious note, rather than learning a specific language I'd want to be able to pronounce any phoneme in existence, learning other languages would only be a matter of memorizing the vocabulary. It would also allow me to pass phonetics exams

Being the first of all the kids at a summer camp to climb a really difficult rock-climbing track, paddling on a raft on a river with others while singing Noah's Ark (Czech song) because it was raining heavily, flying in a small sports plane and the pilot pulling into a dive and the feeling of weightlessness it caused, making my friend laugh to the point of tears, being invited to a birthday party for the first time in ten years, meeting new people I could freely chat with and be accepted, staying awake and chatting all night until 7am and the friend who hosted the party finding us all sleeping together in one room despite the original plan of boys and girls sleeping in two separate rooms, visiting Prague with mom, watching a meteor shower with two elderly ladies in our village, meeting Death the first day at the dorms first year at uni, an online zoom history class when we were all dressed up for Halloween last year and kept talking long after the teacher left the chat all the way until 1am, getting the first couple comments and reblogs on my Frankenstein art, the long hours with Death and Corvid brainstorming Ship Logbooks and developing the characters, showing Jay a WIP music video I've been working on and their compliment giving me motivation to continue (though I still haven't finished it ._.'), the first night in the Frankenstein discord when we listened to the musical, the night we watched Master and Commander

My femme worldstate aka gatekeep, girl boss, gaslight ✨ all of these people are pretty fuckin ruthless and I’m excited to share them!

Meet Lyriel Tabris (she/her) all round badass warrior that somehow wields a sword as big as her with no problem. Unfortunately, falls for the shem that is Alistair and has very conflicting feelings about it all. She hardens Alistair, makes him the sole king of Fereldan, refuses to accept the dark ritual and dies 🥲 she deserved better.

What can I say about Noah Hawke?? She’s 6”3 trans femme rouge (she/they) fiercely loyal and is a raging lesbian. Her and Isabela get along swimmingly :’) she’s mostly red with a bit of purple, sides with the mages but kills Anders. He was her best friend after Varric, and the betrayal she felt runs deep. She stays in the fade 🥲

Emiril Lavellan (she/her) is the only mage in this worldstate and she has a ROUGH time of it. She falls for Solas, he breaks up with her, ouch. She rebounds onto Blackwall, bad idea, the second betrayal fucks her up. She finally find peace with Cullen, but she’s a changed woman. Far less trusting and naive. She disbands the inquisition and makes Leliana divine.

Basically they’re all very angry, bitter and resentful of the position life has given them. Don’t blame them tbh. I’m mostly putting this here for reference for myself! Maybe one day I’ll write fics with these characters but who knows :’) thanks for reading ! The pic crew can be found here.

i did just realize that by this same logic I don’t know if i can bring myself to leave hawke in the fade like i planned. on the one hand it’s what i’ve wanted to do for ages (sorry noah ily) on the other hand. amber would not leave varric’s best friend like that

just did demands of the qun & saved the chargers, and now i’m thinking about how it’s kinda foreshadowing how amber is going to handle the blackwall situation. amber is loyal to people over institutions & always has been—that’s why it was so easy for her to dump the carta when given the opportunity, because there was no one left there who she loved. the inquisition has always been a means to an end for her, and i think her friends might think she’s loyal to it because she’s loyal to them, which is a very dangerous and incorrect assumption to make about how she operates.

her advisors must have been furious when she came back from the coast after demands of the qun—throwing away the potential for such a major alliance for the sake of bull’s friends, who she hardly knows. if word of that gets out, it’s a huge red flag for any potential allies; she’ll always choose her people over them. and she proves that point weeks later with blackwall.

i haven’t played through the blackwall reveal with a romanced inquisitor yet but on my first dai playthrough i remember him saying something about how the inquisitor is discrediting the inquisition by using their power to save him. and he’s totally right! especially so in the romance—any critics of the inquisition must have a FIELD DAY after the whole thing goes down. sacrificing alliance for her friend, reputation for her lover, doing everything she can to make this institution work for her and her people.

the Otherworldly Companion (OC) masterpost

Nuadha is what's commonly called the "Dark Urge", but with some modifications. She is an avatar of a largely-forgotten god (in this part of Toril, anyway) who ran afoul of both Bhaal and his Chosen. She travels Faerûn in the company of future Hero of Baldur's Gate Wyll Ravengard searching for a cure to a mindflayer affliction and a reunion with the sundered fragments of her Self.

Dayir and Ishan are my Eorzean Warriors of Varying Luminosity, as it were, and there's a lil about post about them here. Sesshai is their tricksy Viera bestie that I don't talk about nearly enough, for some reason.

Noah Kingfisher is the Sole Survivor of Vault 111; Gabriel the Revelator is the Lone Wanderer; and Gideon of the Grave is Courier Six. Noah is a literal child of Atom, and Gabriel is the next-closest thing, being genetically manipulated by Atom in utero. Noah also exists in Halcyon and Far Cry 5's Montana (along with Preston Garvey).

Anansi Surana is both the Grey Warden that ends the Blights once and for all, and the Herald of [???] (Razikale, but no one knows that) that lays the groundwork for a new world. he's also a First Enchanter for a while. he gets around, you could say. Elijah Wolf (or, Elijah Hawk-child, for much of DA2) is Lord Protector of Kirkwall but that doesn't stop him or his seneschal Varric Tethras from gallivanting off to Skyhold. I don't play in the Dragon Age space much anymore, unfortunately, so don't expect much about these guys unless they respawn in another universe (which is highly possible). or unless I play DA4. which is also possible.

Adrian Shepard is Commander of the SSV Normandy and the scourge of the Reapers. until he becomes something bigger than the Reapers. good thing he's on our side.

Claudio V Invictus is the Saint of Saints and the CEO of Saintscorp. he is the owner of every single pair of the booty shorts in those "shorts that say [x] on the ass" memes.

there are others -- Keahi the Watcher of Caed Nua, Llovyn Arendur of Skyrim, Ananduil and Venanduil of Azeroth, loads more Thedosians, etc -- but they don't have populated tags yet because they simply haven't come up nearly as often.
