last night while texting about better call saul, my friend pointed out that jimmy cares about kim less than he thinks he does, and she is totally right about this. if jimmy really cared about kim more that much, he would never have called her from that phone booth. he never would have pressured her in committing crimes with him and sacrificing her morals for his gain. jimmy loves kim, but not as much as he loves the thrill of the con.

i know this is something ppl regularly complain about but allow me to add my voice to the chorus: it’s exhausting when people insist there are Right and Wrong fandom opinions, and the criteria conveniently happens to revolve around their personal morals
to the degree that i can scroll past it without getting bothered, i’m used to it, but when algorithms are constantly pushing that sort of content bc of how much engagement it can garner, there’s a lot to scroll past sometimes 💀
#it’s not even about lannisters this time#ive been a proud supporter of their worst moments for 12 years now so i’m very familiar with the hater playbook#but when ppl come for my other faves it can be a bit jarring#which is partially bc i just haven’t had as long to get used to it in other fandoms#and is also partially due to the remarkably high bar said lannisters set as far as corruption goes lol#i always think to myself that i wonder what kim wexler hater men thought of cersei/would have if they watched/read got/asoiaf#like they’ll say kim is unstable and vindictive and things and i just WONDER.#but then i think to myself that actually i am WAY better off not knowing and i go on my merry way#text

i love you but...
a succession/better call saul parallel no one asked for
what it says on the tin; spoilers for both shows underneath the cut
imagine this. you and someone you're close to have just been affected by a death in your life. the person who died is someone who the two of both disliked/hated, yet their death has still affected you. a few days pass, and for many reasons, you decide that this person you're close to can no longer see eye to eye. you try to get this across to them, you try to explain the differences you have and you two are fighting about it. but still love them.
so obviously the context of the relationships and even just the world these shows are set in are very different, yet the build up (as described above) is surprisingly similar. not only if the build-up similar but the declaration of love here from kim/shiv is a genuine one as well.
in better call saul, this is the first time we see kim and jimmy say it to one another (although have certainly expressed it before). in succession, while the phrase 'i love you' as been uttered before, this was a real, raw moment from shiv.
turning to kendall and jimmy, this statement is essentially their execution. kendall's ending is certainly more ambiguous, we have no clue what happens to him after the camera cuts. he could jump over that fence, or maybe he just leaves. jimmys, meanwhile, is much clearer. a new style, new personality, new name, a new life. the crux of these moments, the understanding we're supposed to get is that these men have lost the very thing they did it all for. jimmy did it all for kim, kendall did it all for the ceo position. kendall logan roy has lost everything; james morgan mcgill has lost everything.
when looking at how kim & shiv were affected by this, you can see both woman end up in a miserable situation. shiv is following in the path of her mother; a loveless marriage & neglecting her child. kim, at least when we see her again, has been living a life of no choices; the last choice she made broke her. by declaring their love, they made a choice that only harmed themself, but those around them. yet when there is a cycle of abuse and tragedy built into the very world you live, when you're unable to escape the path set for you, when you're stuck between two evils, what else can you do?
#better call saul#succession#better call saul spoilers#succession spoilers#siobhan roy#kim wexler#kendall roy#jimmy mcgill#amc better call saul#succession hbo#saul goodman#ive been working on this for an hour#trying to put my thoughts into words is hard since its 6:30 in the morning#btw ik there is certainly more nuance to both circumstances but this just good fun#well “fun” in qoutes

bro ty!!!!! seriously can't believe you put in this much effort for me
hey jude. I was wondering if I could get some bcs thots regarding Kim. I've tried to understand this character before but I always seem to hit a wall. The others I intuitively perceive their motivations and sense of the character, but I just end up going in circles with kim. I can't get a handle on her temperament, or understand her reasoning beyond a surface level. Do you have any Kim insights that can help? ty!
I feel like this ask could have been written by most of the characters that Kim interacts with. Howard and Rich Schweikart and Suzanne Ericsen and Kevin Wachtell be like, I can’t understand Kim’s temperament or motivations!
Not every character on this show is in the habit of giving long expository monologues, but Kim in particular has LOTS of scenes where she is deliberately keeping quiet, saying nothing, revealing nothing. Think of the scene where Chuck tells her about Jimmy’s stealing, for example, or her interview at Schweikart & Cokely, or when that one judge just conversationally was like “Hurt your arm?” and she was like “Yes. 🗿” Or when this tendency was heightened almost to parody in 609 when she had to be pushed and pushed and pushed to reveal to the judge that she had already resigned from the bar—I could go on.
Her silence itself reveals temperament and motivation: she has a very strong protective instinct, and is very defensive of both herself and the people she cares about. “Loose lips sink ships”-type deal. In her flashbacks with her mom, Kim shows that same defensive instinct in actions rather than words by refusing to get in the car with her mom who’s been drinking. And of course, you have basically Everything that Ever happens between her and Jimmy—defending him against Howard in 109 (also trying to shield him from finding out the truth about Chuck in the same episode), defending him throughout season 2, staying silent instead of revealing that he lied about the Mesa Verde commercial, staying silent while Chuck gives his long spiel, casting doubt on Chuck’s allegations against him when she knows them to be true, defending him (literally) in court in 304 and 305… again, I could go on, but I would just be recapping the events of the entire show.
When Kim takes that turn at the end of season five, a lot of fans were confused by it, and while Kim Understanders may boast a complete lack of shock, I think there is a change evident in her. The question is, what kind of change?
Is it merely bad writing, a forced reversal driven by plot wants rather than character needs?
Is it evidence of Jimmy’s corrupting influence on her, taking a previously moral person and turning her amoral?
Is it evidence of a deep hidden evil coming to the surface?
Or is it an evolving manifestation of the same traits Kim has always exhibited?
Looking at Kim’s defensive and protective instincts more closely, we can see that it’s not just that she wants to always do the safe thing forever. She is willing to take risks if a couple conditions are satisfied:
The end is at least acceptable (e.g. Mesa Verde getting a larger branch approved, from which nobody is likely to really suffer), and ideally righteous (e.g. the Kettlemans being forced to pay back their victims and being too scared to scam again).
She’s in on it.
That’s why she was on board for the entire Mr. Acker scheme and then furious when Jimmy went ahead with it without her approval. The first condition was satisfied (“Everybody wins!”) but the second was not.
When she comes up with the idea to scam Howard, both conditions are satisfied—the residents of Sandpiper Crossing will get their money faster, everyone involved with the case still gets paid, and when Jimmy gets paid, they will use that money to help more people. And she’s in on it.
She consistently wants to satisfy both of those two conditions, and those two conditions satisfy her basic instincts. Acting righteously (in a sort of utilitarian sense) satisfies her instinct to protect the people she cares about—because she does deeply care about the people she works for, and is clearly trying both before 607 and after (when she goes to the legal aid clinic to volunteer) to dedicate her life to them. And being in on it satisfies her defensive, self-protective instinct. When things are good between her and Jimmy and everything is going right, it’s like they have an invisible force field around them. No one else can see it, “nobody knows what we’re doing but us”—in that way it offers a level of safety far above and beyond that of, say, Jimmy’s dad, who acts righteously but also plays everything above board and ends up getting fucked over as a result.
Anyway,
#I always thought the Kim turn was 4.#like... underlying stuff coming to head that had been building piecemeal all this time#The conditions thing makes SO much sense#deeply sorry to y'all who have to read this that think this is cringe but KIM HUFFLEDOR CONFIRMED#1. everybody wins (except people I specifically do not class as people like Howard)#2. She's in on it (honestly this is what I struggle with most because... frequently you are just not in it but#You can't prevent good happening because of it#insight into the mcwexler relationship also bc she is so desperate to be IN it she's willing to overlook#so much#including Jimmy's own best interest#to figure things out on his own#FASCINATING STUFF EVERYBODY SAY THANK YOU JUDE#better call Saul#meta#Kim Wexler

New meta series! I'm going to start posting my grand theory of Kim with the tag #wexler v the system. I've got a LOT to say, but I decided to start with a small moment:
In 4x07, Kim has reluctantly agreed to help Jimmy keep Huell out of jail. Obviously she went into it as a favor for Jimmy, but it seems pretty clear to me after her conversation with Suzanne, the prosecutor, it became her cause, too, separate from helping Jimmy out of a bind. Why? Because the case against Huell was racist.
When Kim approaches Suzanne about the case, Suzanne remarks that Huell doesn't seem like Kim's kind of client, and Kim tersely replies that she disagrees, even though Suzanne is right - Kim is a corporate lawyer. This is a little odd. But Kim doesn't think of herself as a soulless corporate lawyer. She wants to help people, too.
Kim goes on to tell Suzanne that she's done her homework and learned that Suzanne has prosecuted several cases of civilians attacking police officers without asking for jail time, even when the officers in question sustained serious injuries like a concussion or a broken nose. Huell hit a plain clothes officer with a bag of sandwiches. No one was hurt, and he didn't know he was attacking a cop. Plus Huell has no history of violent offenses. She tells Suzanne that it's "unequal justice" - in other words, that the prosecution is being harder on Huell because he's black.
I think Kim genuinely thought Suzanne would agree with her once she pointed out the double standard. But unsurprisingly, Suzanne reacts defensively to Kim's accusation of "unequal justice," because she'd have to admit to herself that maybe she had some unconscious bias and she doesn't want to do that. And this is the face Kim makes when Suzanne snaps that there will be "no negotiation."
This is before Suzanne insults Jimmy. She's righteously pissed off. Suzanne again reiterates that Huell is not the kind of person that someone like Kim should take any interest in, and then she goes on to insult Jimmy, which just seals the deal. But the fight got personal for Kim before Jimmy was insulted.
Kim puts together a team of lawyers to intimidate Suzanne. Notably, two of them are black.
And here's the face she makes when talking about getting the ACLU involved because his rights may have been violated.
Yes, this is all a part of con, but Kim is making a point. This isn't just something she's saying to pull off the con. She believes it.
And this is why Kim reacts with a lot of passion when they win - not just the thrill of pulling off a con, but the thrill of pulling off a con for a righteous cause. The rich have all sorts of dirty tricks they pull to bend the law to their will. Throughout the series, she grows more and more uncomfortable in her role as a corporate stooge. This is where her passion is.

Better Call Saul: The Most I've Cried In a While.
If it isn't clear, there WILL be spoilers during every moment of this post. I would love to talk about my thoughts on the show as a whole, and reflect on how I've connected with the characters... especially Jimmy McGill.
Fresh From 'Breaking Bad'
Being introduced to Better Call Saul after Breaking Bad was inevitable, of course. Going into it, I think I had the same assumption as everyone else: "Wow!! The silly, funny, very unserious lawyer got a show all for himself!! Finally, some comedic relief from the heartbreak I felt from Breaking Bad! Thank god!!" Well, safe to say I was extremely wrong. A couple episodes in, I'm learning to mourn "Saul Goodman". I LOVED Saul, I thought nothing he could do would make him seem worse or better than he already was. I thought he was at his peak all around, so seeing him go from Saul Goodman to some dude named "Jimmy McGill" was whiplash, and I rejected it, thinking: "wow, he's not cool yet. This is so sad to watch." Seeing him wear browns, blacks, navy blues and greys really made me shun his core character already. I remember feeling bored, and as if I wouldn't like the show, given the mindset I went in with. Boy, was I wrong.
Learning Jimmy
As I watched more, I came to realize the TRUE Jimmy McGill. His difference in morale, mannerisms, approach to life, more or less was a lot more genuine. A little fucked up? Sure, but human and real. I've come to realize slowly but surely during S1 and S2 that Jimmy was a man who had a heart, despite him constantly ricocheting between being a con-artist, and man with a lot of love to give. When he was slipping back into his bad habits, breaking the rules was fun to him, and that's all he ever wanted life to be as his Slippin' Jimmy self: Fun. When his brother Chuck gave him a new life, he tried his best to win the approval and respect of him. At this moment of time, to my knowledge, Jimmy had no habits of doing crimes. It seemed as if he was a clean slate. When he was at his best, learning and growing with Kim Wexler mid-relationship / early marriage, he would become very self aware. Did he still manage to get into the wrong corners of life despite trying to live straight? Yes. It was really hard to watch him put effort into his own betterment, yet still be pulled into the cartel by Lalo, Nacho, Mike, etc. Having Jimmy's selfish and scheming behaviors fueled due to Kim Wexler in the later part of their marriage especially, Or even when Chuck could never show true belief and trust in Jimmy and his law degree. A lot of corners her turned, and a lot of corners he'd meet either someone he loved that didn't give him enough wiggle room, or people heavily associated with crime. I learned to love Jimmy as a whole. He was and still is amazing.
The People Around Jimmy
As I went on watching Jimmy do his thing: Getting in trouble, repeating his wrongdoings just in different fonts despite having the right support eventually, all while also seeing a lot of potential in him to be an honest man, I started building resentment; Especially when Kim wasn't part of the scheming or continuance at all. At a certain point in S3, I started seeing the pattern of "Jimmy fucks up, Jimmy feels bad mostly because he was caught, Jimmy lies his way through it all, and now Jimmy is apologizing, and he will do this again BUT WORSE in the near future." He was the biggest asshole in my mind come S3. I felt it ebb and flow throughout, feeling it strongest in the middle of S5, and towards the end of S6 with the divorce papers scene specifically. Through every character that interreacted with Jimmy, I felt their emotions towards him. Through Chuck, I felt betrayal and resentment. Through Kim, I felt loyalty and pain. And through Howard, I felt as if i was overextending my hand towards someone who needed help, however they never knew to not bite my hand. More or less, all my emotions can be boiled down to feeling attached and trusting, accepting and helping, then pain and betrayal over and over again until I just couldn't see what Kim saw in him anymore.
A Good Guy Deep Down (?)
Learning about him embodying his Gene persona in a negative way, yet still having the effort to hide from authorities, made me the most bitter. The extent he would go, and the people he would continue to rope into his wrongdoings was a painful view. However, I needed to keep in mind that Gene was right after Saul Goodman, not Jimmy McGill. Like Kim, I had all the belief in the world that Jimmy can be a good guy deep down. I really thought I saw Jimmy McGill in his fullest and truest ways just how Kim did. But once the ending started rolling around, I realized I was just another Howard, Chuck, Richard, Cliff, etc, who could not understand him to his fullest. I often find myself wondering if Jimmy was being true with his actions at the end of the show, even though the 86 years of jail time he has received was by his doing. He could have had seven years, but he confessed to a mountain of crimes, made himself clear as day, gave Kim the fresh slate she needed, and accepted the 86 years. Whether it was for Kim's approval and love, or because he truly did believe he deserved every single one of those years, is unclear. It could be a little bit of both, but I'd like to believe that it wasn't for Kim's affection; But rather, because she inspired him. I will say though, I disliked how fast he became self aware and willing to accept his consequences. I'm not sure if the crew had to wrap this show up quickly, had a different way of expressing his deep regrets and pain via flashbacks or whatnot, but it was paced a little oddly from my perspective. What gives me reassurance to the authenticity behind his change of heart, is in the final scenes everything remains black and white, despite him being in the presence of Kim. Only the lit cigarette shines orange, signifying to me that the memory of sharing cigs with her, and anything else associated with this action in the past, makes him feel alive. Or maybe, it's as simple as everyone else puts it: There's still something between them.
Final Notes.
What I will say, however: it's made me raise an eyebrow to the way he'd only indulge in his bad behaviors when he has the love, or the rose-colored glasses, of at least one individual in his life. With a singular person in his corner, he feels confident and free to commit crimes, whether or not said person knows of it. As Saul Goodman, being the richest he's ever been, had the love and acceptance of thousands. While fully committing to being plain and simple Gene at the beginning of his runaway, he had no one, and he had no crime to be involved with. With Kim, however, he truly tried changing, and still is; By telling her everything, even if it makes him anxious. Staying out of trouble, trying to get Lalo stuck in jail, having 86 years of prison time, giving her the best ending she could've gotten despite the situation he got both of them in, the list goes on. Unfortunately, their relationship was the epitome of an "Addict and Enabler" dynamic, where Kim loved not only his company, but what he brought with it: crime, bad behavior for selfish gain, and fun, all while Jimmy had an addiction with con-artistry he could never seem to fully put down even with her not participating at first. While Kim still loved him as a person, even showing restraint and disapproval of Jimmy's deceiving ways in the earlier moments of their relationship, it evolved into getting married for the "we can't testify against each other" benefit, and they both started wrecking havoc. Kim loved Jimmy a lot, which is why I think his addiction to con-artistry made her, in a way, relapse with the same actions practically reestablishing the same type of criminal co-dependency she and her mother had with one another. She didn't want to lose him, but she was also fighting against her own urges to join in earlier on, hence the neutrality towards Jimmy's actions, and coming to his rescue in court whenever needed, but obviously looking stressed while doing so.
This show has truly broken my heart in ways Breaking Bad wish it did. The story telling, the connection to the characters, the world building, all of it. The way Kim and Jimmy's relationship was tampered and maneuvered with all throughout, in order to tell a rich and cultivating story full of dynamic characters and complex emotions, really moved me. In reality, this show was meant to encapsulate the most heart-breaking, beautiful, yet gut-wrenching romance. I'd like to think that Kim visits Jimmy in prison a few times a year... but I'd also realistically think that Jimmy will always be going from 'trickery' to 'truth'. Both phases being fleeting, just in a different, lighthearted manner with the cell he resides in for the rest of his life.
