Thoughts about Undertale Yellow

Greetings, I just returned from binging through Undertale Yellow, True Pacifist Route specifically, and am seeking a place to let out some thoughts (and steam). It's the first time I'm doing this type of "review" on my blog, but since my thoughts on it are quite strong, I thought, "hey, why the heck not"? Spoilers for the game and its ending ahead, fellas. Buckle up.

First off, let me begin by stating that, for the most part, I had a blast playing through it. The music is amazing, the boss themes real bangers, the environmental ones great as well. My favorite track was the OST that played in the Dunes: a really catchy western vibe with Flowey's theme in it as well, an earworm that filled me with Determination while running through the sandy fields. Then we have a beautiful pixel art style, gorgeous sceneries, great gameplay with challenging and fun boss fights (side note: although I couldn't fully appreciate Ceroba's fight since it had a couple pretty much unavoidable attacks. Or is it just skill issue on my part? Anyway, that part annoyed me more than it should have. Moving on, lmao.)

Furthermore, the game also has charming characters! They are the ones that kept me going and really ignited my interest. Not gonna lie, it took me until the town in the Dunes to become really invested in the game. Martlet is charming and cute, sure, but North Star and his gang, no, that guy specifically sold it for me. Charismatic, funny, very expressive sprites (well, all facial sprites are quite colorful, but it took me until North Star to appreciate/notice just how many there are for each character) and an interesting internal conflict with wanting to entertain others so they forget about the pain of being stuck underground, but at the same time being so absorbed in his persona that he temporarily acts like a douche towards his pals and forgets who he truly is. He also features my favorite joke in the game when he proudly proposes to the salesman that "he wants to buy a gun for the child". Freaking hilarious, love him, huehehue.

Story-wise, I was pleasantly surprised and taken aback by the dark twists of Ceroba and her husband Chujin. And I appreciated how the flashbacks got intigrated within her final boss fight. I don't know about you, but my biggest motivation to play RPGs are not just the gameplay, it's mainly the characters and the story. If the gameplay is amazing but the characters/plot boring, then I lose interest quickly. To me, the real rewards of a tough battle are story progression and seeing just what the characters will do next. Therefore, I greatly enjoyed the breaks between Ceroba's phases in which we saw parts of her backstory. They even made me cry!

...Although, to be honest, I don't exactly understand why we had that insight into her mind in the first place. Why did we survive so many hits to the point of 0.00001 HP? Where's that coming from all of a sudden? Why did time stop at some point like Za Warudo? Maybe that random plot armor (that happened the first time and never again) is explained in another route, but anyway, moving on-

This review-style blog entry only exists because of the True Pacifist ending. I'll be blunt, I hate it. Why?

So it ends with Clover sacrificing their soul for the monsters so they can eventually break free. Which is fine on its own. Clover is for the most part a blank slate of a character, only driven by their desire to seek the lost humans, that's basically it. Maybe it would have made a bit more sense for Clover to see an actual physical proof of their demise before they give up on them completely, but eh. I'm also wondering whether they are really okay with potentially another, possibly innocent human falling down sometime in the future only to get killed by the monsters. But oh well.

(You know, now that I think about it, I actually am a bit salty about Clover's decision to sacrifice themselves, lmao. Would've been kinda cool if it was up to the player, have another ending split.)

Anyways, the issue I'm having is how our cast of supporting characters, Martlet, North Star aka Starlo and Ceroba react to Clover's decision. They are shocked first, but... agree surprisingly quickly?? What?? Excuse me, the entire hassle we went through to get to this point was to stop Ceroba from taking Clover's soul. Now with Clover volunteering to sacrifice themselves, the gang is cool with it??

Of course they don't agree immediately, but are easily swayed within a few arguments back and forth. Man, what friends you are, guys. The reason I'm having this pet peeve in the first place is because we as the human, who has known these guys for just a day, did a lot for them, alright? They all tried to kill us at one point, but we took the beating, the hard battles, forgave them and were there for them during their internal conflicts. We were a pretty decent friend, if I may say so.

Especially with Ceroba! We did a lot to change her mind and path of self-destruction! Yet our so-called friends don't put in the same amount of effort when it comes to convincing us otherwise- or heck, use force if you must- get Clover away from there, lmao. Wouldn't it have been an interesting act of redemption on Ceroba's part, by the way, if she tried to stop us? Being touched by our mercy and refusal to give up on her, she does the same for us?

I suppose the reason I am so baffled by all this is because of Clover being a blank slate, the player character really felt like me, like I was going through the journey and not like I was controlling another character. It felt like my decision to spare them all, to talk to them and wanting to get to know them better. So the group of characters I have really grown to like giving up on me within about a minute of back-and-forth just felt... wow. Thanks, guys.

If I compare it to Undertale's True Pacifist in which every important supporting character gathers up after the confrontation with Asgore, all agreeing with the decision of me, the player, staying in the Underground with them, then oh boy, it really stings. Just would've been a cool, wholesome sign of friendship if Martlet, Starlo and Ceroba decided that "nah, even for the surface, we won't give up on Clover". By the way, in this game, we don't even really get to see why the monsters want to return to the surface so badly. They keep saying they want to, but what are the reasons exactly? More freedom, I suppose. Yet by expanding the Underground with the Dunes, the Mines, the Factory, and some of Snowdin, the Ruins and New Home, their habitat seemed so much larger than in the OG game- What I wanna say is, their desperation should've been shown way more instead of told, so the player can understand the monsters' aspiration better.

The thing is, it's a shockingly easy issue to fix if you really want "the canon ending" with Clover ending up dead and their soul taken: have Clover still have their moment of doubt and realization, remembering what the monsters told them throughout their journey. Then they go to Asgore with their gang, hoping to convince him. It doesn't work out, so Asgore starts a fight. During the battle, Clover realizes it's useless to fight back, it's better to have their soul taken for the monsters, so they allow Asgore to kill them. Their friends are not powerful enough to stop him. There ya have it.

Siiiiigh. Is it just me, being annoyed by that ending? As a whole, the finale felt a little... rushed? Was New Home always meant to be so empty? Is it to build up atmosphere? Yet there were two silly NPCs in the first screen of New Home, making me assume that maybe, there was another plan originally? (If it has been stated in a devlog or any other comment by the creators, then I apologize, I haven't read those fully.)

Anyways, if I didn't care about the game, this rant wouldn't even exist in the first place. I was really invested in the game until the ending just left me... kinda sad, not gonna lie. It will take me a while to process it all.

i think matty was too dismissive of people's concerns and he should really, truly apologize for all of the shitty, racist crap he said.

but at the same time, I think some of what he said is real. like all of us being so worked up online over one person is a bit ridiculous. representation matters and who we hold up in our society matters, but if we really don't like him and don't like taylor for dating him, then we as individuals should just move on, not give him/them our money, stop running our fan blogs, etc. writing pages and pages about someone online is something people do ultimately just to make themselves feel better and like they're a good person.

or, if you still want to be a taylor fan, we don't need to see your long, drawn out explanation for why that's ultimately still justifiable because x y and z. just say you are still supporting her without writing a whole explanation about why you're actually still a good person.

i generally agree with you. no comment on whether matty should have apologized better, really. i think he should've but i absolutely did NOT expect it and will not expect it in the future.

this reply got super long but it was inspired by conversations i've been having with some pals in dms and irl, and how the conversation has evolved (or not evolved) online. so i might be guilty of your last paragraph here and if i am being a holly stallcup right now, so be it!

but there are two things i personally believe about this situation:

a) matty has said and done gross things and now taylor is associating with him (to put it lightly), and people are struggling to cope with that. it's deeply unpleasant to know she wants to date this idiotic edgelord.

b) remaining a fan of taylor's music is truly not indicative of how you personally feel about the issues of racism, sexism, antisemitism, bigotry, and so on.

i think most of fandom on tumblr shares both of these feelings. however, it's a process. some people idolize taylor way and so the idea of giving her up, or changing their perspective/relationship with her, is REALLY hard. a lot of fans are just thinking out loud and processing in real-time, and i think that should be encouraged, because i believe acknowledging taylor's different political opinions or behaviors is critical to moving on to more productive political engagement. it's a good mental exercise, especially for people who are in the early stages of their social justice education.

on the other hand, i see a lot of in-fighting going on; there's been a lot of shaming of other fans, posts suggesting you are "bad fan" or "bad person" if you aren't loudly decrying taylor enough.

and the thing is, the real issue here is racism and bigotry and creating a more just society. a symptom of this issue is that matty, and men as a whole, make comments or jokes like this as a matter of course. why is that? how do we coexist with men who find violence against women, and especially women of color, joke-worthy? if, at the end of the day, we share the same larger political goal as matty, of wanting a better and more just world for everyone, then how do we make sense of his "jokes" in relation to his politics? is it possible you can have a deeply shitty view of x and y issues, and still care about justice in some form (ie, can men in the dirtbag left still add value to social justice movements)? and when we hold people accountable for those hurtful behaviors or words or beliefs, what are we expecting? is it reasonable? do we want education and forgiveness or do we want to exile people who fuck up? what level of fuck up requires exile and which require forgiveness? what are the pros and cons of each and how do those decisions get us to the overall end goal of creating a just world for everyone?

these are, imo, the real concerns. these are what we are trying to talk about when we talk about matty's racist comments. the real issue is not whether you still enjoy reblogging gifs of taylor or if you still want to go to her concert or if you still listen to her music. and unfortunately a lot of the well-meaning conversations people are having end up sounding like taylor is the biggest problem here.

A Story About Two Doomed Lovers, and the person trying to bring them together.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE is heavily based on Jhariah’s music album of the same name, the songs directly correlating to events that occur within the story. This story is set up to be a mystery, but to be completely honest I am terrible at mysteries haha. It is a love story, first and foremost, with the genres of mystery and adventure helping to support that element.

MEET THE CHARACTERS!

The Jester - The Jester is the jester of Limbo, where our main story takes place. Tangent about Limbo is further down. He’s bright, mostly optimistic, and enjoys spending his time with his fans! He loves spending time with his best pal, the Clown, secretly pining after the other. He absolutely adores performing for others! Although recently, he’s received a major personality shift. I wonder why.

The Clown - The Clown is the clown of Limbo and stage partner to the Jester. He performs to make a fool of himself, and is often overshadowed by the much more likable Jester. He envies the fame and praise, and it’s no secret for how much he pines after the guy too. One day he disappeared, and the locals of Limbo never questioned why.

Lola Grayson - A recently dead 22 year old college dropout. She’s always been fond of diving into mysteries and the arts in general. She also has always been the peacemaker between any of her friends' conflicts. She landed in Limbo almost immediately after her death, confused but willing to figure out what this place is. She first meets The Jester during one of his performances for the new arrivals. Side note: She’s an egg! She is trans-masculine, but doesn’t figure it out until after the main story.

LIMBO

Limbo is a realm between Heaven and Hell, as most people know. Its skies are blood red, with almost everything within the realm looking red in color. The locals at first glance all look like walking and talking skeletons, bones rattling wherever they went. If a user wanted to, they could reveal what they want another soul to see, aka their true form and not just a skeleton. Limbo is one of the six realms that linger between Heaven and Hell, being the third created.

OTHER CHARACTERS

There are other characters that are worth mentioning if you want to ask about them!

He Who Grants Death - personification of death, he acts like that one gay uncle. Basically genderless, but the name was bestowed upon him as such.

She Who Bestows Life - personification of life, she acts like that sassy wine aunt who talks shit about everyone. Basically genderless, but the name was bestowed upon her as such.

The Ones With Divineness - over seekers who tend to the living realm. Their existence mostly ties in with different religions, a select few of them being head of a certain religion. They’ve been there since the beginning. They can be seen as gods, sure, but they prefer not to be called that. They are ones with divine power.

Louise Shaw - a local of Limbo who tends to the library. Having died around 45 years old, she’s determined to host every catalog of book to have ever existed. A daring task, but so far she’s been successful at it. She died on March 19th 1844, being crushed and killed in a factory accident.

Robert “Robbie” Fisher - a local of Limbo that hangs around. He died at age 25, and just spends his afterlife chilling out. He died on October 30th 1961, being hit by a car on his way to the store. A heavy smoker, he’s an overall easy guy to get with. Side note: he’s from Wales.

I Love My Sister Chronicles (Secondary Project)

Young leftists are loud and sometimes annoying, true, but they should be able to exist without catering to the more right wing sensibilities and not be called racists for that? Like? When someone points out that white Western leftists' rhetoric is alienating people with different experiences of "socialism," including older immigrants from non-American countries, you immediately jump to HOW DARE YOU CALL US ALL RACISTS AND TELL US TO BE QUIET??! Like my dude, my pal, my friend. That's quite a logical leap and represents the exact thing we're talking about here, so thanks for helping us demonstrate it.

That's not what I was saying and not what the other anon was saying. We're saying that this kind of exact jumping-to-conclusions, "you're definitely wrong and not us" mindset is what is harming the American leftist attempt to recruit a broader coalition that exists in the real world and not just on majority white, majority native-born American, majority-young spaces on social media. It's rather telling that you equate "ask leftists to be more productive and useful and realistic about their message if they actually want to make any real social change" with "STOP TELLING US TO BE QUIET!!!"

Anyone who has read my blog for any amount of time knows that I am not by any means quiet, or telling anyone else to be quiet, about leftist/progressive/liberal/anti-Republican policies and ideas. What I'm actually asking them to do is be smarter about it, which is often taken as a personal attack. Likewise, you're confusing "leftists" with "Democrats," which is not the case. Many people of color in America (though not all) are Democrats or usually vote for Democrats, because Republicans have taken a hard turn into open racism and white supremacy since at least the 1980s. These people do not necessarily identify as "leftists," in the sense that social media/Terminally Online Leftist Twitter defines it, and indeed, most of them don't. African-Americans are one of the Democratic Party's most core constituencies, but they largely identify as mainstream liberals or Democratic centrists. The far-left movement in America is very small and very white, for reasons I have talked about before, and this is the exact kind of rhetoric that is not helping it expand.

Likewise, both myself and the anon pointed out that it didn't matter if Bernie and/or AOC or anyone else calling themselves "socialist" was radical or not. We specifically discussed the historical context that makes certain groups deeply hesitant and/or flat-out unwilling to associate with that label, even if they otherwise vote for Democrats or support Democratic ideals. This is not some nanny-state slap on the wrist reprimanding young leftists for being "loud." Time stamp: Jul 15? Heeeeey. Hello. So I did take a break from art till like last week, but uh, the health has been a roller coaster-

I kinda cleaned the whole house compulsively multiple times. I dunno what to say about that. Went from the compulsion to be Always Drawing to Always Doing Chores, so it wasn’t really a break? It felt amazing for a little while, but I am so stressed inside ahagfhkhdf. Anywayssssss.

I realized that promising to do the art requests Later is just me returning to old behavior, like just... keeping it on the line so I /nobody gets a direct answer *when* it will be done. That makes my brain think it’s in the clear while the other artists are worried and unsure what’d happen. Andddd even though I did have the motivation to do animated group projects for a little while, a small thing completely knocked me into dropping everything else.

I know I *could* try to join more projects or do more requests, I’m not in a safe headspace where I wouldn’t be set off, and nobody should risk their project’s deadline for that-

TLDR I’m going to Try and fix things up on my end and stop myself from joining anything (that depends on Every artists effort). Even if I feel alright *now* I know there’s a lot of risk for *later*- just don’t let me in anything big and important even if I ask, please- for at least a year-

I am a feminist, but I am not a radical feminist. I believe that the patriarchy harms all genders. And, while I noticed an abundance of blogs pointing out the struggles and discrimination that women face as a result of this system, I have not yet come across one doing the same for men.

"That's because men are inherently privileged and do not struggle like women do." Some would argue. And while it IS true that men do have privilege in many areas, in some, they do not, and are actively discriminated against.

As such, the purpose of this blog is to be a safe space for men to feel heard and understood. I also want to show non-men persons the unique struggles that men face, so that we may all better understand each other.

The Hazbin Manor (The Seven Sins AU)

Welcome to the Hazbin Manor! Run by Lucifer himself, it houses all seven deadly sins, and well, now you too! Their doors are always open to desperate sinners, so long as they behave. Please read the information below for more details.

Lore

Essentially, when a sinner or fallen angel becomes in tune enough with one of the deadly sins, they can choose to become the embodiment or pillar of that sin. This will influence their appearance (their color palette shifts to fit their sin), their behavior to some extent, and their powers.

This means multiple characters could represent the same sin, though I have chosen to focus on these seven. It also means the sins are unseen forces that can imbue individuals with these powers (yes, I know Helluva Boss personifies the sins, but I find this more interesting for the sake of this AU, so).

The Hazbin Hotel does not exist. Rather, Charlie and Lilith remain in Heaven, where Charlie attempts to encourage the other virtues to help the people of Hell.

Despite originally being known for having stress problems, Sloth showed him a different path. Husk had a reflective dream about the life he was leading and how it was affecting him mentally. Ever since, he's taken each day as it comes and never forgets to just relax.

He dislikes unnecessary fusses, perfectionism, and loud noises.

Husk is closest to Lucifer (greed) and Angel Dust (envy).

He has a great admiration for Lucifer, who unapologetically spoils himself, and wants to help Angel Dust let loose.

Husk struggles to get along most with Lute (wrath) and Adam (pride).

He finds Lute far too abrasive, and gets exhausted just watching Adam show off.

She finds Husk far too lackadaisical, and believes Vox is wasting his time on such a useless sin.

He can sometimes be found feasting behind the manor on fellow deer, and lord help you if you threaten the manor. He is considered the manor's guard deer for a reason.

Alastor is closest to Lucifer (greed) and Lute (wrath).

He dislikes people he's jealous of, show offs, and documentaries.

Angel is closest to Husk (sloth) and Vox (lust).

He found Husk was a very understanding and relaxing person to be around. He knew Vox through the Vees, the two being victims together until Vox set them free.

Angel struggles to get along most with Adam (pride) and Alastor (gluttony).

He finds Adam obnoxious while he finds Alastor just gross.

Multiple cases of assault by the hands of Valentino led to Vox killing Valentino and fleeing the Vee tower. In that moment, he gave into a specific kind of lust, bloodlust. He found the manor together with Adam, connecting over how lost and alone they both felt. Vox now finds it empowering to embrace and explore his lust on his own terms (and only with consenting parties).

Seeing as Vox has a complicated relationship with sex due to his trauma, he also represents the virtue of chastity and occasionally takes on this form.

He dislikes non consensual touching, old technology, and creeps.

Vox is closest to Adam (pride) and Angel Dust (envy).

Thrown out of Heaven for giving humanity freewill, Lucifer grew bitter as the years passed. He watched as humans abused free will, and decided that, if humans were going to take from him, he'd take from them in return. Still, his daughter couldn't help but maintain hope for them, being the embodiment of kindness and all. Inspired by her, he used his wealth and power to start a manor for those who represented the other sins, curious to see the result.

Lucifer was originally the embodiment of charity, and this still shows in some ways.

He dislikes thieves, most sinners, and poor quality items.

Friends

Lucifer is closest to Alastor (gluttony) and Husk (sloth).

He didn't believe he deserved to be in Hell, especially after everything he did to protect Heaven. Yet, wandering around the streets of Hell, he realized Hell wasn't entirely as Heaven portrayed it. Perhaps, he deserved better than even Heaven in its current state, and that was the prideful though that sealed the deal. He and Vox found the manor together when looking for somewhere to stay.

I've made 100+ post, it's about time I let you know about me.

Hi, I go by one-to-many names, but you can call me Evan. I'm gay, trans, autistic, hella traumatized, a teenager, and go by They/He/Ze. God wanted to personally fuck with me. I, obviously, have Supernatural as a special interest.

My timezone is EST. I have four pets and three siblings, one younger and two older. I also have a niece and nephew who I think are the bestest kids in the world, but I may be a tad bit bias.

I am into about every form of the arts. Drawing, writing, acting, singing. Just not instrument playing. I can't play a single instrument to save my life. I also like to read btw. (Btw is pronounced bee-tee-dubs. Just so ya know.)

My OCs make me kick my feet. Specifically my SPN OCs who are siblings. P(1072) and Charlotte Rogers. I am working on writing their stories, but I haven't gotten my writer juice in a while. But once I do, they will be out on both Wattpad and Ao3. Till then, you can read my other works :)

I've been thinking a lot today, yesterday. So much, in comparison to how much I've been looking at myself. Very little. So much so, that when I go to get a little high and on my porch with my blog, as a treat, hehe, and I see my reflection in the facetime app, it gives me pause. I am a person, I am a human, I'm one of them, the rest of them, who you think about all the time. And you've got people. Wait, who are those people? And how are they doing?

That might be something I need to do more.

I can see the glowing lights of the city skyline from here. They're twinkling, like jewels, through the new gap in the tree foliage. Soon there will be more of them, and I'll have a warm drink, a scarf and mittens. I look forward to those times.

Long story

(1). Really, these two versions should be flipped. The second one was the original version, but the higher-ups at Archie Comics nixed it. In favor of the first. (2). It is not Daryl Edelman's fault. And here is the unpleasant fiasco behind (ahem) "Guess Who's Coming to Pop's".

There was a second hand recollection of what was happening here behind the scenes on Dwayne McDuffie's website / blog years and years ago. Looking it up, I see that McDuffie passed away a decade back, so I imagine his site might have slid off with him. I remember is Victor Gorelick doesn't come out well in it. Originally this interracial romance was set to be a long arc, but deliberations curbed it to this one short piece. I do not know that Victor Gorelick is not wrong on it, at least in the first part in disagreeing with a great "Betty's Dating a Black Man! Everyone in Riverdale is abuzz on Betty's 'Jungle Fever'! (See that new Spike Lee movie? Hard hitting, isn't it?)" narration -- which, like it or not, is about where this sequence lands. A ittle bit of conjecture and subtext, I imagine Gorelick may have felt on the defense, that Edelman was putting Riverdale on trial with this one in the reaction shots of Archie and pals. And I suppose the one thing this has going for it is it has an automatic out -- Dexter goes off to college, the end. The other hand is simply -- they brought in an outsider, Daryl Edelman, to do something creative-wise, some mandate to shake things up, and some mandate, either stated or implied, for diversity. He brought some weird food based scifi and pseudo statecraft trappings in Jughead, and has to find a different direction for Betty. What do you dowh with Betty? Having her in tv production with an obnoxious co-worker is a start, I guess. That buys you a couple issues. What then?

The problem comes next, after this broader story gets nixed, and we see that which got printed. Either run this story, complete with its racial dynamics, or don't. Either have this character in the tv studio or not. But, to state the obvious, do not color the obviously black character white in a story where the reader is going to read him as a black guy, because the story does not make any sense otherwise.

I imagine they quietly stuck in a digest in 2018, deciding "yeah, we better go ahead and fix this one." The story, I should note, is only one step beyond the dynamic of a recurring theme with Chuck Clayton in his early appearances (as well his bizarrely rendered predecessor), where -- a misunderstanding on whom someone is ripping leads to indignation on Archive's part, before Veronica t prevails that "Chuck's great! I am talking about that slob Jughead" or Pop Tate reveals who is not serving -- Archie and Jughead, deadbeats both. Or, one step back, Al Hartley in his Spire Christian line has Chuck explaining that all our differences were settled 2,000 years ago!
