how do you get your shapes and models looking so well?!?!? especially your pokemon renders they're amazing, i need to know your secrets if you're willing to share

Thank you! There's a few different aspects that go into making my stuff look "presentable," but I find that manipulating perspective while working on my renders plays a huge part in making them look better than they would otherwise, especially since I usually try to keep my poly count as low as possible. Since the majority of my 3D art is intended to be seen only from certain angles and doesn't have to be exported to a game or something where people could view them in full, I can take a lot of liberties with it. For example, here's a render from a few years ago (2022) that I still like:

Everything is made of very simple shapes cobbled together to look like something more complex when viewed from the intended angle.

The materials, shaders and post-processing effects used can really help things look more impressive, as well. I tried my hand at (partially) sculpting in Blender recently (based on this Pokemon trading card), and here's the result without any shaders or effects, and then fully rendered:

For this one, everything is still made up of relatively simple shapes, and the materials and lighting are doing a lot of the heavy lifting (if you're curious about my process for materials and lighting, I've posted about that a bit here and here and elsewhere on my blog).

But anyway, that's just my process as a self-taught hobbyist. Hope my rambling made sense!

And here we are, folks! As of this coming out, we're only two week away from the start of the new year (along with Christmas being just a week away), so why not come with me on a little walk on memory lane, and discuss not only the progress that I made this year, but also the progress that I've made as an artist in general so far?

While it hasn't been stated much before, I started doing digital art in general back in 2019, more than 5 years ago. And ever since then, I've been steadily making art and improving my skills. The pieces that I made back in '19 were hella rough, as I was just a newbie at the time who didn't knew what he was doing. But over time, I started to get my footing; making new friends that shared the same interests as me, my interests changing and maturing over time, and just generally slowly improving my craft. And that can't be more prevalent than this very year. I mean, think about it; Fakemon design, an art trade, experimenting with different brushes and art styles, having your work featured on a Youtube channel (twice on two different occasions), and especially working on TWO different monthly drawing challenges in the same year. I usually don't wanna toot my own horn, but looking back at the input for 2024, I can certainly say that it's been my most successful and experimental year yet (despite how long it can take between releases).

So with all of that said, what's next for me as an artist? While I can't fully say right now (mainly due to how I'm still trying to brainstorm ideas atm, along with maybe coming up with a secret project or two? I'll need to get that figured out in due time), what I CAN say is pretty neat, as I got a few things to share and tease for the future.

More Maryanna: At this point, Mary has basically become her own character, gradually evolving from what she was originally. As much as I wanna continue with the JT stuff, I've been getting kinda less and less interested about it atm. Not only due to how there's not really much an audience for it, but also due to how Johnny Test, as a franchise, is likely dead in the water for real this time (Wildbrain using the episodes as content farming doesn't really help). This... wasn't easy for me to come to terms with in the slightest, as I did admittingly grew up with the show during Cartoon Network's CHECK IT era back in the early 2010's, but given that the series itself has faded in the public eye after it became the target of so much ridicule due to how the actual series itself has gotten worse with time, it left me thinking on what to do with the original ideas presented with Primal Eternity. Keep in mind; I still LOVE what I suggested for JT: PE so far, but I feel like it could be put on the backburner for a long while. Maybe I could return to it in the future? Perhaps. But, as it stands now, Maryanna (along with Susanic) are going in their own path. What started as me drawing and rambling about the vampire versions of a couple of characters from a 2000's flash cartoon has resulted in them becoming their own distant characters by now, and given that Mary herself is basically ONE of my mascot OCs now (more on that later), it stands to reason that her own adventure is about to begin...

Fakemon Design: As many of you might remember, I tried experimenting with my ideas for a whole Fakemon region based on the Pacific Northwest back in 2022, mainly inspired by the announcement of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. While the steam on that series has long since ran out, I still kept the thought of making Fakemon in the back of my head, as some of my earliest memories on the web involve looking up all sorts of Fakemon designs on places like Tumblr and Deviantart. And as such, I wanna get back to making Fakemon next year. Will I get back to my region-making idea? I'm not sure, but I'm down for it if I get enough ideas to fully make it work. I also wanna experiment with redesigning certain Pokemon as well, so stay tuned for that too.

More Paleoart: Between the few one-off pieces and the second May-strichtian Madness challenge, I really made alot of paleoart this year, haven't I? I'm happy to announce that I'll planning to make more of it in 2025, as it's gearing up to be a MASSIVE year for paleomedia, mainly due to yet another Jurassic World movie coming out next year, but also two big paleodocs in the form of Survivng Earth and the upcoming Walking with Dinosaurs reboot. We just need PHP season 3 to complete the trio of high-quality paleodocs in 2025. And not only are we seeing those projects come out in the new year, but there's also plenty of other forms of paleomedia that are not only coming as well, plenty have already been released in this paleomedia resurgence (Amber Isle, both the Dinosauria and Sauria series made by David James Armsby, the aforementioned PHP already having 2 seasons released, and even TUROK of all franchises coming back next year, along with many others). Needless to say, it's a very good time to be a paleonerd, and I'm hoping to make more art to show off my love for the ancient past.

Art Rebranding + New Look!: Time for the biggest reveal of all! Recently, I've been thinking about updating my current look and style to keep up with my ongoing progress as an artist. The look that I've been having has been around for 6+ years now, but I feel like I should do some spring cleaning to keep up with my work, especially after getting inspired by @space-dragon14 and his recent rebranding. While I can't fully share every detail that I've got cooking in the oven as of right now, I've got some big plans in mind for the future. New look, new logo, same nonsense, and ESPECIALLY a new OC/persona in the works, as you can see up above. Just who exactly is this odd-looking hammerheaded newcomer? You'll just have to wait and see. Just know that soon, you better get ready to take the plunge and experience the madness for yourselves...

And with that, we are fully done with this update+ recap, folks! After a crazy years both in terms of art and real-life stuff, it just fees nice to kick back and to relax for a bit (also went on a quick weekend trip to Atlanta recently, so that was fun). While I'll remain to be active on the web as always, keep it mind that art will slow down for a while, as I wanna get my plans fully figured out first. While the world is gonna be a bit more rough for the next few years, which I'm not looking forward to, I'll always continue to keep making art and other sorts of weird things. If 6 years of being on the internet has taught me anything, it's that making folks’ lives just a bit better with my work will always be my main drive in life.

Hello, first day of October! 🎃🦇 Today, I'm switching off the scare factor, and then I broke the Inktober's rules, sort of... 🤷‍♀️ Plus, my apologies for not revealing my list of this year's Inktober. Because I'm still busy drawing the whole list of things I must do. 📋

• Nonetheless, what's today's annual Inktober topic? 🤔 Mmmm... Do you remember when I drew "Day 5" in 2022's Inktober → [CLICK ME!] [SECRET BLOGS EXCLUSIVE!], as well as bryan360's Art Trade artworks from 2022 → [CLICK ME! #1], [CLICK ME! #2] ? 🙂 Well, here's a spin-off with an extra twist! 😄 Wearing their A/W Clothes or Normal Clothes in "Baggy Size" rather than normal size, with their bodies (or rather furs) invisible. Plus, a respective color of clothing will be included as a separate artwork (not just different shades of pumpkin colors) because I loved seeing baggy clothes, in all hugable colors! 🥰🤗 I call this year's Inktober: "Baggy Cloth-Ober"! 🧢👕🧤👖🧦👟🥰 This is SOMETHING, that I want it to do than making another scare-related stuff. When Spot & Riya switching their A/W Clothes gifted from the rabbit/fox family, on March 2021 → [CLICK ME!], she finally found her favorite comfort. Sure, her magenta fur wearing solid red & blue threads doesn't matched her personality because its a boy's clothes, as well as the glasses. But, she said "who cares"? She want it so bad, and she's keeping it permanently. Now, she owns two A/W clothes, and don't worry about her OG A/W Clothes. You'll see her more often, as her owned Maxwell A/W clothes. Plus, adding a warm fitted socks & shoes (which I drew it for my A-Pal's OC) for both Maxwell and Riya covers their red & blue comfy threads. 🔴🔵🐰🏎️👕🧤🥰🤗

Just kidding, but you probably believed me for a second there. What Megs actually is is the pure personification of Virgo, running laps around the rest of us mere mortals.

This lady writes fic, records podfic, records a podcast, makes art, runs various Discord servers, runs various fandom fests, and somehow finds the time to read and comment?? She is super openminded and openhearted. She is encouraging to others. She is creative, hilarious, and helpful. All of this in fandom spaces alone, but she also has like...a real life?? Outside of this?? How, though?

And even though real life has been kicking her tail of late, she was still making stuff happen????

Not to mention, my first podcast I was featured on was because of Megs reaching out to me! And her presence in the same episode helped me stay calm and sane. We've done multiple episodes together on both Snape Chat and her own podcast, Care of Magical Shippers. She is such a blast to chat with, and listen to. And I have to credit her big time with me opening up to new opportunities and trying new things, however scary they were. And her always being such a rock through it all.

Finally, some new artwork!! A good way to kick-off the new year, hopefully! I'm sorry I didn't post anything original in the latter half of 2022, but real life really kicked me in the bum, and I only barely managed to finish the first draft of my new story.

This is Kari, the second half of the storytelling-duo from my new project, *King Eyes*. You might remember Dalon from last year. Here's my current blurb for the novella:

Dalon is a storyteller, Kari is a daydreamer. Armed with a mind-reading amulet, they try to craft the most anticipated folktale retelling in their village.

There aren't many ways to fatten a purse in the sleepy fishing settlement of Lurit. Dalon juggles working at the fish market during the day and peddling stories to eager listeners some nights. Using an amulet called King Eyes that allows him to read minds, he partners with Kari, a girl struggling to find her place within her potter family. With Dalon's easy way with words and Kari's crisp, vivid imagination, their stories soon develop a small but loyal audience.

With a trading caravan arriving in a handful of days, Dalon sees an opportunity to earn extra coin from the influx of visitors. On a tight deadline, Dalon and Kari scramble to care for family, cook fish, make pottery, keep their partnership a secret, all the while trying to patch up the biggest plot hole in their folktale.

Anyway, one of my goals this year is to create at least three fully coloured illustrations. I feel like I haven't really improved my art skills for a few years now. Here's to hoping that the stars will align to let me achieve that goal. 🤞🤞

Currently at Arsenal Contemporary are Dorian FitzGerald’s paintings for his exhibition Fitzcarraldo. The images above are a few of the larger paintings from the show. The works initially look like photographs, but on closer inspection you can see more of the process involved in their creation.

Below is a section from the press release discussing FitzGerald’s work and the paintings pictured above. For more on the other works shown, including some of the smaller paintings, head to the gallery's website.

FitzGerald has spent the last two decades meticulously crafting a compelling, often monumental body of works, several of which have taken years to finish. His various lines of inquiry revolve around a central tenet: that the excesses, the follies, the deceptions and indulgences, the grand edifices, the opulence, the waste and plunder, the vanities, the subterfuges and the chummy pacts of the wealthy and the powerful, are all fodder for scrutiny. His subjects have ranged from the outdoor stage at the secretive Bohemian Grove during a production of Faust, a fake crown of costume jewelry made by the British to impress the King of Adra and help them facilitate their slave trade, to the staggering array of sunglasses collected by Elton John, to a vast aquarium stocked with black market fish. In this regard, FitzGerald has been compared to a contemporary court painter, albeit one who fully understands the paradox of using ostensibly beautiful works of art to deliver barbed comment on the very subjects he has so painstakingly rendered. FitzGerald’s large paintings are constructed with acrylic paint (and occasionally caulking) in a slow, precise method that the artist has refined in his studio over several years. The pre-process involves researching imagery, preparing it with custom software, making a large-scale acetate transfer onto canvas and then building up the paint slowly in a manner that resembles a kind of pointillism filtered through vector graphics. Both colour theory and the physical properties of paint, such as drying times and viscosity, are brought to bear in the setting of the final image. The infinite patience and granular attention to detail suggest a kinship with Tibetan sand painting. While the latter, once finished, is soon wiped away to drive home the impermanence of all things, FitzGerald’s works tend to hold a mirror up to that innately human wish to be exalted and remembered in the minds of others before the scythe comes down, as it inevitably does for queen, shepherd (and artist) alike.

Anchoring the exhibition is a pair of monumental paintings, both depicting a room in a Parisian apartment. Salon, Apartment of Valerian Rybar and Jean-François Daigre, Rue du Bac, Paris (2015) is the furnished version. Daigre and Rybar’s New York- and Paris-based firm Valerian Rybar & Daigre Design Corporation was renowned for providing the most lavish interior design and decorating for society doyennes from Miami Beach to Marakkesh in the 1970s and 1980s. It was closed following Rybar’s death in 1992. Their clients included Guy and Marie-Helene de Rothschild, Nicholas and Genevieve DuPont, Antenor and Beatriz Patino, Samuel and Mitzi Newhouse, Pierre and Sao Schlumberger, Sir James Goldsmith, Christina Onassis and Stavros Niarchos. They employed a host of artisans all over the world who did anything from paint Medieval tapestries on blank walls to create mother-of-pearl panels for a bathroom. They designed much of the furniture and rugs and were meticulous about the choice of fabrics, using opulent materials like satins trimmed with gold thread. The related painting, four years in the making, acts as a kind of coda. Salon, Rue de Bac, Paris (2022), depicts the same room after Rybar’s death, now an empty hall of mirrors en route to being dismantled. The searing band of red in the centre of the painting, glowing behind a door already off its hinges, is a peek into the molten bedroom that they had once kitted out like a Roman general’s tent.

Aquarium (Taboo) (2018), at 128” long and 40” high, was two years in the making. The painting shows a vibrant aquatic scene, with dazzling exotic fish and a mesmerizing array of coral. But the fish are black market, the coral has been pilfered, the 240-gallon tank is overcrowded with 53 specimens and the entire enterprise is kept alive by a complex system that is wholly unnatural and requires constant vigilance to prevent collapse. Of course, wild fish bound for the aquarium market must be caught alive and thus there exists an unsavoury network of divers who prowl the world’s reefs to find the most exotic and rare, often using cyanide spray to stun them (or inadvertently kill them if too much is used). The cyanide, when it settles on coral, soon kills that too.

Synopsis: Kraven the Hunter walks around his trophy room, plotting his revenge against Spider-Man and his return to America. Meanwhile, Betty Brant confronts Peter to reveal his secret, and Peter finally gives in and reveals himself as Spider-Man… but Betty wakes up to realize it was only a nightmare. Peter goes back to college relieved now that Aunt May has a clean bill of health. While trying to go about a normal day, he gets snubbed by Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn for being anti-social.

Spider-Man begins stalking J. Jonah Jameson’s movements and tries to corner him. Jameson flees and Spider-Man is seen as attacking him instead and runs away. However this is not Spider-Man, but his foe Kraven in disguise. Peter hears about the trickster running around, and decides to let him do so for the next few days. To save his reputation, he finally tracks down and chases the impostor to figure out who it is. When he follows him to an abandoned building, he runs into Kraven who sprays a mist canceling out his spider sense. Spider-Man goes around the building, loaded with traps, and finally battles Kraven. They trade blows before a gang of crooks makes them relocate their fight.

Soon enough, Spider-Man gives a final knockout punch and delivers the gang and Kraven in a neat spider web for the police. Kraven then confesses his impersonation of Spider-Man to the police and clears Spider-Man’s name. Jameson learns the news and angrily dismisses a secretary who’s replaced Betty as she has left without warning. Peter is turning over in his mind thoughts of Betty, not knowing her disappearance. Peter realizes he must move on as he’s accepted his fate as Spider-Man but Betty never would.
