This is a thing that actually happened when I was in college.

A Virginia Tech official has filed an $850,000 libel lawsuit against the student newspaper for identifying her as the school’s “director of butt licking.”...

Yeagle’s attorney, S.D. Roberts Moore, said the title implies Yeagle committed “a crime involving moral turpitude” and that the actions of the paper “injured Yeagle’s employment, office, and professional standing without justification.” Moore argued that under Virginia state law, the act of “butt licking” could be considered felony sodomy. The law states “if any person … carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth … he or she shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony.”

Yeah, she ended up seriously losing the libel suit. This particular hot vexatious mess was not dismissed outright, but made it to the state Supreme Court.

The fact that "your poor taste student paper joke called me a nasty felon" ever passed for a vaguely plausible legal argument in this situation serves as some illustration of just how ludicrous the legal space was. Which is precisely the type of legal space that authoritarian ideological weirdos are trying so desperately to drag us all back into--and no doubt employ in at least equally good faith wherever they see an opportunity.

Yay rpg maker stuff :3. I should make more updates that aren’t just little concept doodles cause I have gotten a couple rooms to work, but eh. The game itself is still in like the getting the whole map figured out stage, then I’ll have to go through and plan where story specific events will happen, what characters appear where, major puzzles, whether or not there will be a battle system, etc etc. but I do have a lot of things down and have figured out how the program works for the most part! You guys get to see the map planning page early hehe, also the little girl character (who I still need to figure out the name of whoops—)

Anyway, these two are some main characters, Layne and Reid. I don’t wanna spoil too much about them, but they are also med school students and test subjects like Miran. Layne is the one with their hair to their right and spiky ends, Reid is the one with their hair over their left eye and a rounder style.

Do you ever just think about how in Batman The Knight, Bruce mentions they promised to not use guns and yet Bruce is the first one to shoot Luka to protect Khoa? Especially considering his small flashes whenever he had to use guns even at inhuman targets? And he still did it?

YES!!! Yes, I do!!!

I went through this specific issue recently and i have so many thoughts, I hope you don't mind me using your ask as an excuse to ramble :)

Bruce was having such a bad time in this issue it's not even funny. Luka just decided to kill the only constant figure in his life at this point, his partner, his bestie, his boy crush, his only companion, and just expected him to sit and watch while he shot him right in front of his eyes, like, bro, right in front of the traumatized by loved ones being shot in front of him boy??? WHY

And of course that happened after months of him relieving this particular trauma repeatedly on account of having to use guns and interact daily with a guy who, bc of his past career, he couldn't help but compare to his parents' murderer. Why not, after all. Just marinate him a bit before going for the kill.

Obviously, Bruce couldn't let Luka just kill Khoa, so he takes the gun, and he doesn't even kill Luka, but taking that shot was such a difficult thing to do in such a stressful situation in which he's clearly relieving his biggest trauma. And like, sure, he made his promise to Luka, but more than that, guns are forever associated with his parents death and their murderer. Bruce very much can't use guns on real people without shaking, trembling, throwing up, yk, feeling like he's putting himself in the shoes of joe chill and feeling so intensely guilty. It’s really his last resort - if it was Bruce’s life that Luka was threatening, he might even have let himself be killed in order to not have to use the gun.

However, since the universe is not over with him yet, and still has some ideas about how to make his day worse, it decides instead to force his hand by making Minhkhoa be the one being held at gunpoint. Thus, Bruce does take the shot anyway in the worst way possible and in the worst situation ever, and literally the only thing that could've been worse would be making him kill someone, so of course,

MINHKHOA TAKES THE GUN

AND SHOOTS LUKA RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM

MAKING SO THAT BRUCE'S SHOT REALLY RESULTED IN SOMEONE'S DEATH

ONCE AGAIN

RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS TRAUMATIZED EYES

and as if this wasn't enough

Honestly his biggest crime, I don't care about the murders and other felonies, this moment right here is the only thing he ever did wrong.

Like, can you imagine the level of brain damage bruce was receiving that day?

Khoa went from loved-one-about-to-be-killed to being the one walking on joe chill's shoes. His range, honestly. No wonder Bruce got so mad and then so heartbroken. Crying his eyes out, literally hugging himself. The saddest, most traumatized boy ever

Anyways, bruce still misses him, even after all khoa put him through. Or, as he says, he misses who he thought he was. After their first breakup khoa's image took a lot of damage - bruce really starts to wonder if khoa wasn't just a monster and he was the only one not seeing it. He thinks minhkhoa is sabotaging him, and that he might have killed alfred and his ex-girlfriend.

But of course nothing of this it's true and Khoa manages to undo some of the damage to bruce's opinion of him by trying to warn him about the guy actually sabotaging and trying to kill both of them (he also almost dies in the process, which i'm sure made him seem extra harmless and babygirly to bruce), so i guess that was enough to take away the thoughts of khoa being very likely to kill him one day.

He also offers a justification for the two murders he committed (Luka and master Ouahbi - honestly, what's the deal with all those criminals/ex criminals being both so good at diagnosing people with psychopathy and hating them so much????), and it was good enough for bruce, i guess? Tbh, he was mostly just trying to not think too deeply about it, 'cause he just wanted to have a little more time with him so badly. He would do so many things for khoa, and forgive him for so much stuff. HOW COULD KHOA FUMBLE HIM SO BADLY-

One thing I think about a lot is how in btk #7, bruce’s broken heart is addressed - he only references his trauma with his parents death in the issue, but the last issue ended with him saying his heart was broken bc of khoa so we can infer that he’s thinking about what happened between the two of them too. I find it interesting how this seems to be bruce’s way of dealing with khoa - he doesn't talk about him. Dick mentions it in Batman (2016) #104

And bruce never says a word about what happened between him and khoa to zatanna

I wonder if this is his way of keeping khoa with him. As he says, his heart never heals bc he doesn't let it - and so, he never talks about khoa, he only talks with zatanna about the loss of his parents, and he tells dick some of the bad khoa did to him, but doesn't delve into how important he was to him, or the good times they spent together, or how willing he was and still is to forgive him (tho he ends up showing him this part anyways when he goes to ghostmaker to ask him to coparent batman inc. with him when he first started it). He tells their story in a way that makes it seem like their separation didn't affect him negatively at all - dick only realizes bruce still misses him bc of his super powers of seeing right through bruce’s emotional barriers. But bruce keeps refusing to talk about khoa, or adress the ways in which he is still hurting, so he nevers gets better, and thus, khoa is still with him in a way, if only in wounds he left behind.

I also think bruce focuses a lot on everything bad khoa did to him and tries so hard to not even think about the good parts of their relationship bc the truth is, in his heart, the good outweighs the bad by a lot. Which is the reason why khoa barely has to do anything to win him back every time he comes back - bc despite everything, bruce has always been way too willing to forgive him for everything, and all he really has to do is to come back, and be willing to stay for a little while longer.

The recent influx of “Jason is obviously a bad person. Look at how many people he’s killed” posts is 2x more idiotic because it runs on the same premise as “Jason is a cop symbol”. There’s an infinitely more famous example right next to him that people ignore entirely.

In the real world killing people is a felony, just as vigilantism as a whole is too. The same way Batman is a fictional character in a fake world, Jason is not part of the real world either. I think if you’re above age 10 you should’ve moved past the stage of trying to point fingers to try to determine a right vs wrong way to do illegal vigilantism in a world like the dcu while pretending it’s a perfect model of a real society lol.

Batman enjoys maiming and crippling people (bad things). Why is he working with cops and throwing drug addicts into prison after beating the tar out of them (bad things). It’s proven in the real world that that does not do anything to rehabilitate them and in fact costs the government billions of dollars and actually worsens the war on drugs (higher mortality & crime rates, and increased spread of infectious diseases). Yet since the authors constantly spoon feed you lines about how heroic he is people just eat that shit up, disregarding the fact that it might be utter horseshit irl and his morals wouldn’t make much sense either.

If ‘character doing bad thing’ is synonymous with ‘character can’t possibly be a good person’, then that should negate the idea that Batman’s biggest trait is compassion (although I think it already does for other in-story reasons lol, re: he tends to be classist and discriminatory towards people who commit petty crimes, calling them degrading names like “trash” and “bottom-feeders”. No amount of donating to charity makes you a good person if at your core you see poor/homeless people as lesser and you get a kick out of mocking them).

There’s far more evidence of Jason possessing all the good traits the authors keep begging you to believe Batman has. He patiently fed and cared for his dying mother all alone as a small baby/child. He literally fed groups of homeless people like a mother hen everyday while he himself was homeless, brain dead, and running on basic survival instincts. After finally regaining higher functioning in his brain and discovering the joker was still alive, one of the first things he cried about was the countless number of other innocent people dead at the hands of his own killer. If the only justification you have for why Jason’s a bad person is that he kills, that’s a weak and baseless argument for obvious reasons.

They then had to run away from their home and I believe, the state (Georgia) They made the decision to be election workers out of commitment to democracy and civic life, and then got their life threatened by Guliani, Trump and...Kanye's manager (this isn't a joke).

If you didn't hear about it, it's because as far as I know, Biden/Robinette has acted as if they never existed when they ended up having to run for their lives just to perform their civic duties.

What do you think this looks like to the most marginalized your people keep telling are going to be protected when they were in very basic ways left to fend for herself ? Trump said: "Unleash the hounds" and the hounds were unleashed, and the Black women that have worked steadily so that the results would be fair and square found no support from Robinette.

Republicans want to bring back child labor and get rid of social security, medicare, Medicaid. As someone who is surviving on Medicaid and social security I don't want those taken away. The Republican majority house already put a lot of limits on food stamps in this past term and I don't think we'll still have food stamps if we get a republican Congress and a Republican president.

They've made it pretty clear that if they get a republican Congress and a Republican president they're going to enact project 2025 and call a conference of states and try and take our rights back to the days when only wealthy white men had any rights when women and racial minorities had no rights, they want to make it illegal for LGBT+ folks to safely exist in public and get lifesaving healthcare.

Do I like him?

For context: Caron is in charge of a famous knight's college. Like, they train people and help them develop the skills and morale in order to become knights. Very similar to old-fashioned irl knights. Like high status and all!

My boy Sammy gets THREE bingos!!! Like Caron's, I did Sammy's from the POV of later in the story, where he's committed a good bit more crimes, haha. Also similarly to Caron, Sammy's crimes prior to the story are strongly unassociated with him, haha.

The funnier thing?

One of the early scenes of RFtA literally has Caron questioning Sammy about some things--which brings up Sammy's lack of a legal background--and then helping him create a fake legal identity for himself.

Though the actual creation of Sammy's fake background probably isn't going to be included, haha. Just the discussion that leads up to it.

EDIT: while looking back over this, I remembered that Sammy explicitly never kills within the story and had to fix this!!! He can technically still be charged with it for other reasons/doing things that could reasonably lead to the deaths of others, but never purposely harms to the degree of murder!

I'll stop with just them two, but omfg it's just the FUNNIEST thing to me realizing just how many crimes my characters commit, haha.

The Ides of March, part 3

In which a jewelry store finally gets burgled and Bunny makes a fateful commitment.

Thing 1: The physicality and careful detail of getting through the door and picking the various locks is very fun. As is Bunny's apparent need to tell us every couple of paragraphs how pretty Raffles is.

...there knelt A. J. Raffles, with his black hair tumbled, and the same watchful, quiet, determined half-smile with which I have seen him send down over after over in a county match!

Like, rein it in a little there, Bunny.

Thing 2: One of the things I find most interesting about Bunny is that he doesn't actually feel bad about engaging in criminal activities. He thinks he should feel bad and he therefore deliberately makes himself feel guilty afterwards (and that guilt is compounded by the guilt about not feeling bad naturally) but actually during the crime? Bunny is absolutely enjoying himself.

The romance and the peril of the whole proceeding held me spellbound and entranced. My moral sense and my sense of fear were stricken by a common paralysis. And there I stood, shining my light and holding my phial with a keener interest than I had ever brought to any honest avocation.

(Something something burglary as a metaphor for other kinds of crime something something)

Thing 3: God, the little throwaway detail of Raffles leaving all the silver on the counter alone "except to choose a cigarette case for [Bunny]"! Picking out a little present for his boy on top of saving him from his gambling debts - so sweet and charming.

(Like, this is absolutely Raffles' idea of a fun first date, right? They've had a few drinks, they did a fun activity together, Raffles got to show off, Bunny got a present - clearly a date.)

Thing 4: "He could think of Keats on his way from a felony!" Bunny, I'm sorry, you have no idea how many weird poetry allusions and puns this man can make while in the middle of a crime. I'm shocked he's only made one, but I suppose this is Raffles on his very best 'first date' behavior, trying to be charming and not annoying.

Thing 5: I love very much that Raffles removes the bullets before giving Bunny back his gun. (He does this again to someone else in Mr Justice Raffles and it's such a weird, funny thing to repeat, I'm so fond of it.)

Thing 6:

Why should I work when I could steal? Why settle down to some humdrum uncongenial billet, when excitement, romance, danger and a decent living were all going begging together? Of course it's very wrong, but we can't all be moralists, and the distribution of wealth is very wrong to begin with.

Unlike Bunny, Raffles has never had a moment's struggle over the morality of what he's doing. He objects to other things, like murder ("not the game at all") and extortion, but stealing? Totally fine, at worst morally neutral, at best nearly salutary.

Mayblade After Party #1: When the Bladebreakers decide to break into the Bladesharks hideout and chaos ensues …

They split up, with Becky flashing an eager smile as she hurried after Kai. Steph hoped her presence would be enough to stop Kai from doing anything foolish.

And who would to stop Becky from doing something just as foolish, the nagging voice in the back of her head wondered.

“This is a terrible plan,” she muttered under her breath as she rounded the corner to the back of the warehouse, Matt silently on her heels.

She ignored him and instead hunted for their entry point. She wasn’t the first teenager to commit such a felony, she reminded herself, but she wondered how many teenagers were adept at breaking and entering high tech Beyblade facilities.

The Bladesharks hideout, of course, wouldn’t be as complicated to break into as Balkov Abbey, or the Psychic’s Lair. A window (preferably already broken) would be ideal. In a pinch, she could make do with an air vent, although she didn’t fancy the jokes about her height that might invite from her smarmy companion.

But the only windows at the back of this warehouse were well above even Matt’s reach.

“Should we try the back door?” She suggested, certain that it couldn’t be that easy. Matt shrugged and reached for the handle.

“It’s unlocked,” he said, appropriately surprised.

“Rather convenient,” Steph observed, frowning at the door. “Which means that breaking in this way is exactly what Carlos wants us to do.”

His hand paused on the handle, awaiting instruction. “So what do you want to do?”

Steph hesitated. In the back of her mind, her spidey senses told her they were headed for trouble, but she also knew she couldn’t sent her teammates in there alone. They were committed now.

“Okay,” she said, nodding for him to continue. Wordlessly he pulled the door open and she followed him carefully inside.

“It’s pitch black in here,” he grumbled, rummaging in his pocket for his phone, but Steph had a better idea.

“I’ve got this,” she told him. She reached into pocket for her Beyblade and slipped it into her launcher.

3,2,1 …

Seraphina skimmed the concrete floor just ahead, the light from her bit chip illuminating the corridor before them.

“Much better,” she said. Pocketing her launcher and ripcord, she motioned for him to continue.

“Did you hear that?” Matt asked only moments later.

She had; the familiar click of metal and plastic of a beyblade being loaded into its launcher was unmistakable.

“Automated shooters,” she announced, glancing around and spotting the carefully disguised false panels in the walls either side of them. “I suppose it was too much to hope Carlos would let us just walk in here.”

“And here I thought he was being generous leaving the back door unlocked,” Matt muttered dryly.

The remark coaxed a smile from her. “We’ll take what we can get,” she said, stepping forward. “Stay behind me, I’ll handle this.”

He shrugged, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “If you say so.”

She sent Seraphina forward, triggering the automatic shooters. There was a synchronous whoosh from either side of them and a handful of beyblades shot through the air towards them.

Her reaction was instinctual, directing Seraphina into the wall and using the momentum to ricochet off of it and into the path of the oncoming beyblades, which shattered immediately on impact.

The sound of plastic falling to the ground was quickly followed by the click of the launchers reloading.

“No you don’t,” Steph muttered, redirecting her beyblade towards the launcher on their left. Electricity crackled as the launcher short-circuited, and seconds later, the remaining launcher meet the same fate.

Two for two, Steph thought and she turned around to look at Matt, grinning as though he might congratulate her efforts. Instead he shrugged. “They’re just a bunch of spinning tops,” he reminded her, stepping over the charred plastic to continue down the hall.

“You wouldn’t be saying that if I let one hit you in the face,” Steph muttered under her breath as she made to follow him, ignoring Seraphina’s amused chuckle.

They continued down the passageway, both a little more cautious than they had previously.

I basically just apologized because I was the og anon who mentioned the full leak the SH Sunday info came from was sus/heavily stated not confirmed from what I gathered online, but many people saw it, took it, ran with it outside of the full context and made it look more confirmed. honestly I have personally seen great reasonings both for and against the SH and AE for Sunday. I have faith that whatever they write for him will be great regardless, but I do hope it will be AE just to see him more x) I heard (I don't recall this being said in a stream but I may be wrong) that Shaoji's fave character from the cast IS Sunday, so I definitely think extra care will be given and regardless of where he ends up, the story will be satisfying.

And who knows... maybe he will be given the Firefly treatment where he gets a bunch of ads and additional screen time 👀 personally I'm anxiously awaiting his merch series. hyv never fails in that department (well, maybe they miss out on small seemingly better merch ideas but still lol). Like I bought some Aven and Robin merch and I am SO excited for future versions of those that will be Sunday themed (like light cone sand block). Personally I wasn't fully sold on the SH Sunday side until I saw a video on YouTube about it. All people talking about it really glossed over details and made it sound very circumstantial vs tailored to Sunday. I also do think that though Sunday has done some morally ambiguous things, I lowkey feel like he would still ?? can't think of the word but I imagine a version of Sunday almost clutching pearls because of the intensity of what the SH do sometimes. He viewed his ideals/methods as worth it, but idk if he'd feel that way about others' methods for similar ideals, if that makes sense. First impression: Oh she looks cute. Hope she doesn't turn into a plot device. Impression now: My adorable chaotic gremlin who has more agency and control in the story than her spy and assassin parents <3 Favorite moment: I think I'll choose the moment where she rescues the drowning boy in episode 11. She's kind and selfless enough to risk her life to save him, and she didn't even hesitate to jump into the pool like how brave is that kid! And since she didn't want to expose her secret she took it all upon her to act and save him herself. Idea for a story: I think it'll be wasted potential if we never learn about the scientists who created her and their motives, so I think a story of her being taken by them will be interesting, albeit sad, until at least her parents come and kick ass to save her. Unpopular opinion: I don't ship Damιanya and that seems to be quite the unpopular opinion in this fandom... Even if they're aged up and Damian actually treats her decently, I still don't think they'd make an interesting couple. Favorite relationship: Anya with Papa and Mama. Don't make me choose! Favorite headcanon: I genuinely wonder if Endo is ever gonna explain why she has those little hats on her head, and I think it would be hilarious for them to be just hair clips that she wears literally 24/7. So my headcanon for that is that Anya is just stylish!

First impression: LOL that's a way to break up with your girlfriend. Is he just gonna be one of those boring protagonists whose only character traits is past trauma and being OP? Impression now: If anyone hurts him I will commit several felonies. But please hurt him I want the whump :3 Favorite moment: Bench scene after Yor kicks the living daylights out of him. The vulnerable moment of him remembering his mother and opening up to Yor about that because we know it's real and not for the mission is unparalleled. Chef's kiss. Idea for a story: Okay okay hear me out. We know that he's a very disciplined spy so if he's ever caught he has to be caught in the act. Mere evidence won't do because he'll deny any involvement to hell and back and be pretty convincing about it. So he has to be caught red-handed. And an idea for that is, he's disguised himself as Yuri because for Reasons he has to infiltrate the SSS offices, but then for some reason the actual Yuri appears there too. "Yuri" and Yuri fight, and an incompetent officer finds them, aiming his gun at them. Twilight is silent, but Yuri tries to convince the guy that's he's the real Yuri and he should shoot the fake one. The guy says that "Only a spy would act like that" and shoots. While that happens, within a split second Twilight thinks "I have to let him die. I have to get out of here. I have to let him die." But he just cannot do that because he knows how much it would devastate Yor to lose her brother... so he pushes him out of the way and takes the bullet instead. Maybe not anywhere too dangerous, like his arm or something. But it's enough to slow him down as he tries to escape, and he's finally caught while still wearing a mask with Yuri's face. You can imagine Yuri's shock and horror when he realizes it's "Loi-Loi", who is a spy and tried to infiltrate the offices and also saved his fucking life. Because as many lies as he's said, Yuri has absolute proof that this man really does love his sister. I want this to happen so much you have no idea. Unpopular opinion: I've yet to read the manga and anything that explores his backstory but I think it's easy to think he'd abandon his spy work after he realizes he loves his family and wants to spend his life with them. Which yeah it's what we want for him but I think his desire for peace tops even his love for his family. He'd rather break his own heart along with theirs and leave if it means he can keep working as a spy and protect the fragile peace. Which is why I feel that the story cannot end without Ostania's government falling, and the new, more democratic government either signing a secure peace treaty with Westalis or uniting under one nation. Favorite relationship: Loid and Anya. Look I love twiyor as much as the next shipper but the father/daughter feelz was one of the things that hooked me into the show so it's the one I want more of. Favorite headcanon: I once read a post talking about how people from Westalis may have a different accent than people from Ostania, and now I cannot get that idea out of my mind. I think it would be interesting to see Twilight suddenly drop all pretenses and start speaking with the accent he grew up using, allowing himself to connect with that old part of himself he kept hidden. I doubt they'd do that in the anime (and since I watch the Japanese version I don't think I'd notice the difference) but it's still a very interesting headcanon.

Chapter 1: The mediation

"You want me to what, Levi Andrew Thomas!?!." 

The baffled six-foot-tall man asks the black man with green eyes and dark brown curls. 

The black man, Levi, pleads," Sh, Colin, or you will get us kicked out!" 

Colin Bridgertion has never heard anyone associate a rich person as the best option for kidnapping someone. That includes someone who is to be a well-known journalist at their school campus. 

The white Englishman brushes away his bangs while he tries to think of a way out of this situation. 

His mother, Violet, raised her eight children to be humble and keep in check on their morals. 

This absurd idea of Levi completely dismisses everything the lovely Lady Bridgerton has taught him. 

Not only is it something that could get him in trouble with the law, but how on earth is he supposed to bring some stranger to his family's summer reunion vacation? 

"Colin Bridgerton, I am asking as your best friend. Please!" Levi begs, "You are the only person who fits the credentials for this job." 

Colin's long fingers brush through his long curls as his emerald green eyes look around the study room before returning his attention towards Levi's direction. 

"Just because I come from a line of rich nobles does not mean I can get away with committing a felony!" Colin states through clench teeth. 

Levi brings his thumb and index finger up his nose to pinch it with annoyance, "I can't do this. Anyone would expect it to be me. As you know, I am Black. They always expect it from me due to the ridiculous stereotypes." 

Colin hates it when Levi uses the black victim card. Yet, he knows that Levi is right. 

"Hypothetically, If I were to do this for you. How on earth am I supposed to kidnap someone and take them with me to Los Angeles!" Colin states in a duh tone. 

Levi gave him a smirking smile," Come on, Col. Your brother owns a private jet. I am sure you could take it ." 

'This is an intriguing idea!' Colin thinks before shaking that idea out of his mind. 

For goodness sake, his mother would have his head if she were to find out. Meanwhile, Anthony would add this to the many disappointed lists of which Colin has done wrong in his life. Plus, last time he checked, kidnapping someone is a felony. 

"There is no fuckin way it will work! Ant would not lend me to the private jet." Colin protests while his right hand pulls a little of his brown hair, before finding both of his hands start pulling on his hoodie strings with anxiety. 

Levi replies, "Look, I can easily get her passport and everything else ready for her to go. All you need is to remove her from London." 

Colin breathes out a puff of air in frustration, "You are not listening, Levi." 

"Colin, this might be a life or death situation," Levi confesses. 

Confusion forms upon Colin's large forehead from Levi's statement. 

"What do you mean?" He asks while Levi looks down into his hands. 

"Penelope Featherington is my ex-girlfriend Phillipa's younger sister. That is all I can tell you." Levi states in fear. 

Colin whispers, "What type of situation is she in?" in a sharp tone. 

Levi admits, "I don't know. The last time I talked to Penelope, she asked me a bizarre question." 

"Levi, What was her question?" Colin asks with curiosity. 

Levi doesn't answer. 

"Dam it, Levi, tell me." Colin requests in rage while his right-hand bangs on the study room ikes table. 

Levi spurts out in a quick response, "If I knew someone that could kidnap her." 

Colin looks at his best friend with more questions. Yet, he isn't sure if his best friend knows all the answers. 

Again, Levi asks, "Can you do it?" 

Colin was about to say NO but surprised himself by replying, "Let me think about it."

Trans Genocide NOW- An Explanation

General Introduction: You may have heard the term “trans genocide” on your social media platforms lately. Many transgender people and allies of the LGBTQ+ community have been using this term as of late, and it may seem hyperbolic, or even insensitive when you look at more well known genocides of history (the Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide, etc.).In America, we are taught that genocides are events that cause the death of drastic numbers of particular groups of people, and because of this, many people are under the false belief that for something to constitute genocide, there must be some sort of killing involved. This is untrue, and in this blog post, I will be not only explaining why this is false, but I will also be going over the idea of trans genocide in the United States and explaining why so many believe that we are in an active genocide attempt in the US as of present.

Definition of Genocide: Let’s begin with the basics. What is a genocide? The legal definition of genocide is “An act committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group” (Merriam Webster Dictionary).

Meeting the Criteria of Genocide: According to the UN General Assembly, there are five official acts of genocide, and for something to meet the criteria of genocide, not all of the five acts are required to be committed. In fact, only one of these acts must be committed against a group for the criteria of genocide to be met. The acts do not need to be committed against the entirety of a group, but simply members of the group for the strict reason that they are members of that group. The UNGA’s five acts of genocide are as follows:

Killing members of a group

Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of a group

Deliberately inflicting upon the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part

Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group or preventing the propagation of the group

Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Killing members of a group is only one out of five ways that a genocide could be carried out, contradicting the idea that mass extermination is the ultimate manifestation of genocide

The United States and Trans Genocide: So, how does this apply to what is going on with transgender people in the United States right now?

  1. Killing members of a group: 

Luckily, transgender people are not (yet) being hunted down and killed en masse. However, there is an alarmingly large amount of violent rhetoric existing surrounding transgender people right now, and there is plenty of legislation that promotes and encourages people taking violent actions against trans people. At least 35 transgender Americans have died by violence this year, though the number is most likely an undercount, as trans victims are often misgendered and deadnamed by media and police, and many transgender deaths are simply not reported on.

  2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of a group: 

There is plenty of legislation out there that provides examples of causing deliberate bodily and mental harm to transgender individuals (with 496 anti-trans bills being introduced this year, 40 of which have been passed and 364 are active as of now), but I will be specifically focusing on three bills. 

- Oklahoma Senate Bill 129, which would make it a felony for anyone under the age of 26 to access gender-affirming care in the state of Oklahoma. Health care providers under this bill are forbidden from providing gender-affirming treatment to any patient under the age of 26, no matter what their circumstance may be. This bill’s banning of medically necessary healthcare for not just children, but legal adults would result in the forced detransition of numerous transgender people, which can be incredibly traumatizing. 

- Georgia Senate Bill 140, Which prohibits gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. The bill focuses on children with gender dysphoria, the word for the distress a person experiences when their gender identity doesn’t align with the gender they were assigned at birth. Within this bill, no specific practice or medication is banned, because the use of these procedures are only prohibited if they are to be used for the purpose of gender affirmation, meaning that a cisgender child would have easy access to these procedures and medications (estrogen, testosterone, top surgery, etc.) for any other medical reason. Transgender children are the only ones being targeted here. This bill’s restriction of the rights to seek medical assistance for minors will result in an increase in gender dysphoria, causing severe mental distress upon these transgender children, and of course traumatic bodily changes that these children do not want, and were trying to prevent in the first place through accessing gender-affirming care.

- South Dakota House Bill 1080, which prohibits several forms of gender-affirming care for transgender children as well. This bill forbids several forms of bottom surgery, the potential for top surgery for AFAB (assigned female at birth) trans people, and prohibits both hormone therapy and puberty blockers. South Dakota House Bill 1080 is the farthest that any healthcare ban has gone for transgender people in the state in the last five years. Similar to Georgia Senate Bill 140, any cisgender child can access these procedures for any reason other than gender affirmation (Cisgender children have been prescribed gender-affirming hormone therapies and surgeries for generations, for example, often boys who are “too short” being prescribed testosterone). This bill will have the same results as bill 140, an increase of severe gender dysphoria among transgender children and traumatic, unpreventable bodily changes for trans youth.

  3. Deliberately inflicting upon the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part:

Here I will be giving another example of a bill that effectively changes conditions of life in a way that aims to suppress, restrict, and scare trans people into obedience and invisibility.

- The bill described above is Tennessee State bill 3, also known as “the anti-drag bill” in the media right now. This bill bans “topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, or male and female impersonators” in the presence of minors. Each of which, within the bill, are defined as “adult cabaret performers,” and therefore, should not be acted out in front of children. However, the wording in this bill is incredibly vague, and does not define what a “male or female impersonator” is exactly, meaning that it could very well simply be any transgender person existing in a space where a minor may be present. In other words, anywhere in public. Waters become even muddier when you take into account that Tennessee does not allow gender-changing markers on birth certificates, meaning that there could be a valid legal argument made that any transgender person is simply a male or female impersonator, seeing as they are identifying publicly as a gender identity that goes against what is stated on their birth certificate. This bill’s vague wording also fails to define what a “performance” is, meaning that it could very well be determined by an individual law enforcement officer that a trans person simply existing be labeled as a performance, since our existences are frequently seen as examples of political extremism and performances anyway. All of the vague wording and uncertainties in this bill create a legally unsafe and fragile situation for any transgender person who may be out in public in the state of Tennessee. The bill will instill uncertainty and fear in transgender people, leaving few safe options for them, such as fleeing the state, staying in their homes, or detransitioning.

  4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group or preventing the propagation of the group:

Most of the anti-trans legislation that is happening currently is targeting transgender women, who commonly transition through HRT, or Hormone Replacement Therapy. At around a year in on HRT for a transgender person assigned male at birth, they become completely infertile. On the other end of the spectrum, for transgender people assigned female on birth going on HRT, there is also a very high risk of infertility. It is difficult to “prevent propagation” when many members of our community are already sterile. However, we have heard talk of restricting the ability of trans people to adopt, or even mentions of denying transgender people the right to marry, which would lead to transgender people having a very small chance of being able to have children.

  5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group:

I will give two examples of this fifth and final act of genocide here, both of which attempt to remove trans youth from supportive families and even create the possibility for cisgender children to be taken away from transgender parents.

- Florida state bill 254, which classifies any forms of gender-affirming care allowed to a minor as “serious physical harm,” and grants courts of the state jurisdiction of the child, allowing state agents to remove a trans child from their family and home. This bill would also attempt to seize parental rights in other states, meaning that the court would not treat the removal of a child from one parent to the other as criminal, even if the child must be brought across state lines, as long as the removal of  the child was to prevent gender-affirming care. This would be the case even if a parent with whole custody of a child lives outside the state of Florida. This bill does not require that gender-affirming care be currently being provided, it is only necessary that there is a suspicion that the child could potentially be “at risk” of receiving trans-affirming care. Because of the broad language used in this bill, it could pose a threat for transgender parents, as it would be incredibly easy to argue that because a parent is transgender, they would be accepting of their child if the child ever decided to come out as trans themselves, putting the child “at risk” of gender-affirmation.

- In 2022, The Texas Department of Family Protective Services was instructed, by a Governor’s order, to consider families and parents in support of transgender youth to be “engaging in child abuse,” and to investigate them on that justification. This would naturally result in removing the transgender child from their family and forcing them into the foster care system.

What Can I Do?:

But what can you do to prevent yourself from falling into despair in these difficult times? 

Transgender people are nearly four times as likely as cisgender people to experience mental health issues or commit suicide. Discrimination, prejudice, denial of civil and human rights, and family rejection are often the source of these issues (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Find or build a strong moral support system that understands the challenges of being a part of the community. A chosen family/support group can save lives for transgender people.

Remember your own worth as a person: being transgender is not being sentenced to live a life of unhappiness and unfulfillment. We are beautiful, we are human, and we are deserving of life. We deserve to fight back against what is happening to us nation-wide. Our lives have meaning, our lives are joyful. Be proud, push back against discrimination even when it feels hopeless. Find a community near you or online where you can vent and find like-minded people who understand the struggle. Work to lift your community up. Leave behind your biases on gender dysphoria, transmedicalism, xenogenders, or whatever else it may be and focus on strengthening our transgender community. We need each other now.
